I have played with others :) I picked up my first set of sticks and practice pad in May and played with a couple of people. I sucked, but it didn't matter because tbh I'm much better today than I was in May. It was fun. Now it's time to record myself and post it online!

Bruhhhh, I played my first gig recently and it's all thanks to YOU! YOU taught me the basics, the simple grooves, the discipline it would take to get comfortable with limb independence. I had the drive, but your instruction truly gave me the tools to advance my drumming skills! I cannot thank you enough!
My coworkers and I started a band a few months ago so that we could participate in a 'Battle of the Bands'. Well, we performed and we did not suck! lol. I still have many things to learn but I am proud of my performance and how much I learned in the process. Thank you so much for being a key figure in my drumming journey, master! 🙏🙏🙏

I'm a guitarist in a band and I have a drummer already but I've owned a drum kit over 20 years and never really learned to play. In April this year I decided to teach myself. For a few months I just tried to make up grooves. Then I recorded a song I wrote on guitar and played it through the PA with a click. I worked on the song for a month and now it's a complete recorded song minus vocals. I'm now on my second original song and I'm moving along way faster this time around. It's amazing looking at videos of me trying to play grooves in the beginning and now I have completely recorded songs in just 4 months of playing.

Hey Stephen, thanks for another awesome video, timing is spot on as I have been deliberating whether to look for others to jam with but have had doubts of own ability! Have jammed with my son on guitar on several occassions but he is so much better and has similar but slightly different tastes in songs that I can recognise. Will give this a go and maybe in a couple of months get active to find others to jam with. Thanks so much.

Drummers are always in demand. If you've hit a wall playing on your own you're good enough to play with somebody

Not if you're an old broad .Men can be in bands when they are ancient, Rolling Stones as an example.

    Hey Stephen,
Thank you for the lesson and the songs I'm learning!
You just put the benchmark a good step higher with a song a week.
As I am more into the intricate stuff like Tool and Rush this will be a hard thing.
I think I will seek out some pop and rock songs to get started.
Recording is definitely a killer and a thriller, especially if you put it somewhere online. This definitely puts me deep into the un-comfort-zone and this is where I grow the most and the quickest.
To answer your question: I have played with others in different situations, genres and setups, but unfortunately am currently not jamming or gigging with other musicians.

Same for acting. In a play the hardest part is monologues. But when you are acting in a dialogue with other actors you constantly get cues so you don't have to memorize everything by brute force.

I have not played with others but would love to try it! I've only had my TD17 e-kit for a few weeks, but I'm having a lot of fun learning and practising.
How much do I need to know/ be able to do before I start playing with others?

I've been working nights / weekends for the last 5 years. Not recommended! I've had friends and teachers repeatedly ask if I was out playing with anyone. No. I can't. But from previous experience, I can say that playing with others is a GREAT WAY TO IMPROVE! Especially if one has the opportunity to play with SUPERIOR players! Play with more experienced musicians whenever possible!

The song learning part is true. I have set up a set list on Amazon music and I have about 27 songs to play along with.

Yes, I agree, but playing along with the music is also extremely helpful in the learning process

I got thrown into my church band similar to you! The service got dropped during covid and pretty much everybody in the band quit. I really miss being able to play with others.

Haha, same here. I played a little 20 years ago, then about 18 months ago I was invited to join the next practice on a Thursday and the following Sunday I played in the service. I had a good dose of stage fright but I kept things very simple and it actually went very well. The band leader may have picked a few simple songs because of me, I don't know.
Sad to hear you band or even you church fell apart during Covid? Can you do the Blues Brothers thing and "get the band together again"? Thats a worthwhile mission :)
I remember one service here the week after a cyclone did a lot of damage and we had no power in our town. For one Sunday service, I played drums, my wife played piano and another musician piano accordion. No PA, no light or air conditioning in the hall, only about half the people in attendance, but we all had a great time.

No I have never played with others but I know what you say is true. I played women's hockey way way way before it was well known or popular. Goalies , like drummers are always in demand. I played with mostly male teams and my skills improved tremendously I have found a band practice group and am hoping to be able to attend will also improve my rudiments Hugs

I've got a bit of a different perspective. I have ZERO interest in playing with others or performing. My interest in drumming is technical and physical. I'm interested in the skills and the biomechanics of it all. I've got nerve damage reducing my ability to control my left pinky and wrist mobility issues too, such that I had to give up piano and guitar. Come to find out, this is not much of a hindrance to playing drums. It requires a bit of adaptation, but I'm getting there. My ultimate goal when I do get a drum set (have a pad and sticks, working fundamentals and rudiments for now) is for it to be an electric kit played through headphones. I have absolutely zero interest in performing for anyone - not really even myself. I know this sounds a bit weird, but music is part of how I keep my medical issues at bay. Guitar and piano are no longer an option to keep me moving, learning, and thinking. It's now drums. Until it isn't. :/ The good news is over the last month and change of learning I've unlocked a lot of mobility in my hands and wrists and arms that I wasn't able to do before. Pinky's still screwed though, no help for that. The most interesting thing I've discovered is how sensitive my hands are now to the slightest touch or vibration. It is, to me at least, a more accurate judge of how I'm doing when playing than sound (cheap pad) - so I am focusing on stick movement and feel and how they respond to dial in my hits. I figured this out when I got some new noise canceling headphones and could no longer hear my sticks hitting the pad. I instantly figured out I had a far more reliable and detailed feedback method. My hands.

Anyone can play drums along with the Internet.
But with a band it helps infinitely to practice with them.
    Practice makes perfect !!!

My first band were a bunch of drama queens that overreacted to everything, so after noticing that audiences never judge mistakes as harshly as they did, I've never been afraid to go on stage ever again.

    • @petermoeller5901
      @petermoeller5901 7 місяців тому +1

That's very true, the audience often don't notice mistakes. Even other band members often don't notice mistakes.

Strange questions, OF COURSE you can master the drums without playing with others. Why always the dumb click bait titles? Just because UA-cam is full of this, don't just copy it.
What you don't very well master without playing with others is, well, playing with others.
Sure, recording yourself is good, but playing along with others is totally different to playing along with recordings. Having a teacher is even better than recording yourself to grow.
And if people are scared, consider this: drums are one of the easiest instruments to play with a band as a beginner. Learn play a solid 4/4 give (add 6/8 or 3/4 along the way) and a couple very easy fills and you are ready to go. No drum tabs or anything required. The "learning the song" is the following: when to start or stop or play quietly, when to play fills.
As you advance you can do more, but a drummer that produces a solid grove, without dragging or racing, will lift a band. Many drummers play too much anyway, less is often more for drums in a band.
I agree that playing with a band is generally easier, compared to playing along, especially when the other musicians are confident playing the song. The dynamic in a band that helps. For example, many errors the audience will not notice because the others play right.
I happen to play in a worship band too. I had people come up to me after a service and compliment me or the entire band, and I knew that I probably made 100 mistakes. People just often dont' notice. In the worst case, I stop, get my bearings and join back in.
