- In case you haven't met June, she's kinda obsessed with MSG. You've asked June to walk you through her favorite spices and she's starting with one of the most controversial: Monosodium glutamate. But why is it controversial? Why are so many people scared of it? Let's talk about it.

What spice would you want June to delve into next? 🧐
Maybe Red Pepper Nice Tasty? XD
Turmeric
Cardamom
Cinnamon
bay leaves!
Please use this comment as a "I would die for June" button.
Geez, I wouldn't even die for me.
Prince nearly wrote the song in '84.
I would save June’s life if she was sick and I could help in any way.
Uh
June is like a national treasure - Must. Be. Protected. At. All. Costs.
Plant based foods contain more GMP (as well as MSG) whilst animal protein sources contain more IMP in fusion with MSG - hence why veg (and fruits) can have an umami quality to them. The longer they are left to ripen, the more GMP and MSG they contain.
I did a whole PhD on MSG, lovely to see these myths debunked and a chef who uses MSG with pride!
🙌thank you for dropping that knowledge!!
Amazing!
PhD on MSG...wow... that's just amazing. i need to read more. or study more.
Never mind... I'm dumb..
omggg can you drop the link to your paper!?!?!
FOR FLAVOR!
MSG is magical!!

Love you June!
June I'm here to tell you to mix date paste with peanut butter. Dip with banana and or apples!

The fear of MSG is literally rooted in racism.
100%! My comeback is always "...but do you eat Doritos?"
the "study" about the guy who said he felt bad after eating at a chinese restaurant and that it was because of the msg 😑 bitch please. sit your wonderbread ass down. literally rooted in racism. another one!
Yes. What I’ve heard with the negatives with MSG is with Chinese cooking. Almost always.
YUP
Yes it is. It’s Absolutely A Racist Who started all this bashing on The Chinese in 1968. And MSG.
maybe they should name msg as "kelp salt" so people wouldnt be scared 😂
umami salt to make it sound mroe exotic and ppl would love it
I deadass saw "Organic Kelp Granules" in Whole Foods, so.... Someone beat you to it.
@@Kaeinlya omg lol, rebrand the name, and it will sound healthy 🤣
I agree with June. Delish we. Need. To see June more often. Get. Ur own page June. I will watch all ur videos
Maybe she had to sign a contract with delish that she wouldn’t do that, or maybe she already puts a lot of work and time into these videos so she doesn’t make her own page. Either way I’m in love and I want more June videos!!!! 💜😻
couldn’t agree more!!
I only come on here to watch June

Nah Jackie and Julia
I come for the three J's. June, Jackie and Julia 😊
i have an ed and june has changed my life when she said "eat food that makes you happy". i can't thank you enough. everytime i struggle, i think about that and it helps me tremebdously. thank you!
💕
You've got this! I lived with my ED for 11 years, imo fully recovered now, food can be good, food can make you feel good, food gives life, youve got this!!!
I'm glad you found that message, I hope you're doing good ❤
For those like myself who didn't know what ed stood for, google will be of little help. It stands for "eating disorder".
Those symptoms the doctor reported sound like a minor heart attack, something they weren't able to identify well in 1968.
But get anaphylaxis and you'll know about it
@@courtneymcgregor3417 I'm a redhead. Allergic to a LOT of things. But, fortunately MSG isn't one of them.
Ikr, cholesterol! And how would u know that it came from msg other than the rest of ingredients on his plate??
Now, tbh, there is some evidence about MSG and leptin resistance which can mess with hunger signaling but that's an entirely different issue.
yup. some people complain that Chinese food gives them the "symptoms" but they can eat a big bag of American chips that also has MSG in it with out feeling anything. lol Im sure some people are allergic to it. People can be allergic to water after all. I'm just annoyed by people who says they're allergic so they "avoid" msg but eat chips with them added and not have problem.
I cant eat most processed foods, without those symptoms showing up in differing degrees, I now realize that I may be sensitive too MSG, I'll contact an allergist
In conclusion, the reason people hate msg is racism
Basically that's what I thought
Exactly. The “anti msg” movement began with the “Chinese restaurant syndrome” claims like June stated in the video. People claimed to feel that way when they ate Chinese food because of all the msg it contains when they forget that everyday fast food or that bag of Doritos you picked up contain heavy amounts of msg themselves.
that and shoddy business tactics, as usual. Cheap, fresh and delicious Chinese food vs cheap, full of preservatives and flavorsome fast food.
@@Myunna i sincerely get headaches when i eat MSG
@@fulviaorlando550 Individual people can have problem with all sorts of different foods. Doesn’t mean the foods are bad for most people. (e.g. peanut allergies)

Yes i second that!!
That would be awesome
My mom was Japanese and i was raised on food that was seasoned with msg. It never hurt any of us. My mom passed in 1987 and i still remember what an awesome cook she was. Love msg. I still see that red and white round box of accent in her spice cupboard (msg).
That is the one i have.
My mother-in-law: don't buy chicken bouillon it has msg.
Me: bought 3lbs of pure msg.
June just shoveling crisps in her mouth whilst Aaron is trying to come up with a MSG master plan 🤣
MOOOOD
Came to comments for this. My favorite part 😂
I love it when people say “our family is sensitive to msg so we don’t use it, we use better than bullion! It has no msg on the box. It’s amazing, no msg but it brings so much depth in the flavors”
Then when you decipher the ingredients list, it’s just msg in fancy terms 😂
In Peru, we use MSG in a regular basis. We call it by the brand name "Ajinomoto".
Same in Nigeria
Same in India
Huge Chinese-peruvian influence in our food here in Peru. All that Umami flavour... Yum 🥰
In the US it's called accent surprised no one has mentioned it
Ajinomoto is a Japanese brand that is very popular in the U.S. with the Asian population. It’s sold in all Asian markets.
I could watch June talk about anything for as long as she wants to
I really need June to keep a weekly show coming! I don’t really care what the topic is. I’ve loved the Budget episodes, the zoom cooking, and the spice show! I hope this will be a recurring thing!!! Really, anything with June! Also, I love Popcorners!!!
Also, also...I love the hair! Want to see more!
Tomatoes have amino acids in them, which are the building blocks of proteins?
More June!! She's MSG to the Delish channel
I'm not usually on youtube, but ever since I found June on delish, I check youtube almost everyday hoping for a new video! Love the creativity and the attitude! Adds a dose of happiness to viewers :)
Thank you for this entertaining MSG explainer, June! The smear campaign against MSG is rooted in racist fear mongering and I appreciate the work you are doing here to help educate your audience.
You are Absolutely Correct.
Can we talk about June's hair? I keep picturing her on a motorcycle and wearing a feathered earring.
I bought some for the first time recently and enjoy adding it to things. It causes no harm for my family. The trick is to pull back on the salt when using it.
If I taste something that I’m cooking and feel like it’s missing something, I will usually add MSG. A pinch can do wonders for anything savory.
Hooray, will always, always watch a June video!! My request is June's approach to and thoughts on curries - differences between the flavor profiles for the different countries of origin; how to approach creating your own curry blend if you are lucky enough to have a spice market; surprising ways to use it; etc. Thanks!
Okay, one problem with MSG is the way of how it is produced. In Germany many companies abolished the classic MSG in their products due to marketing reasons, replacing it with a MSG pre-product that contains natural MSG. They call it “yeast-extract”. The problematic thing with the yeast is it’s ability to ferment sugars into alcohol. While the “yeast-extract” is produced, it naturally ferments sugars that are used in the production. This fermentation process is of course not completed, otherwise the companies would be left with alcohol. So, as a byproduct, the yeast-extract contains “sugar-alcohols” that have not gone through the complete process of fermentation. Many people have a severe reaction to sugar-alcohols, which cause massive diarrhea, extreme bloating and stomach cramps. This is classified as a FODMAP-intolerance (fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols) or “Non-celiac-non-wheat-sensibility”. It can easily be tested out by eating a spoon of the sugar replacement Erythritol.
So the problem is not the MSG itself. It’s the byproducts that are left in the production processes. MSG that comes in a pure form as a seasoning might not have that problem, but a convenience food might be contaminated with sugar-alcohols.
Interesting!
This explains so logically why I always have big "fun" with many artificial sweeteners, but not "classic" MSG.
@@mediagirl same! I get very bloated with sugar alcohols
Sugar-alcohols give me bad migraines but pure msg doesn't
I feel like we just assume anything delicious is bad for us. When it really doesn't have to be. I'm sure eating MSG in massive quantities is not good for me. But neither is eating massive amounts of anything else.
Accent is msg. Plus it has a song Accent makes food taste like it should.
Yes like the term cheat meal like a creamy pasta. In italy it is enjoyment of life. I cant unsee thousands of unseasoned vegetable and chicken meal preps.
My mom is sensitive to MSG, but she's never stopped my siblings or me from eating stuff with it added in (Doritos and ramen for example). She's sensitive to lots of other foods, such as cucumbers, coconut, and rosemary, so that probably helped her know that it wasn't a problem for others - that, and she knew we'd eat it anyway! 😅
Finally! I tried to convince my skeptical friends this years ago, and Google just started and I used it. It used to peeve me when I saw some Chinese restaurants had a big old sign that said OMG to pander. Glad to see more people are talking about this nowadays!
Edited to add: so much work and content in this video. Love it!
Love the structure and research in this! June's way of laying it all out is really great too!

Great video! My dad was the MSG police whenever he ordered Chinese food for us when I was a kid, and I grew up thinking it was bad. I'm happy to have my eyes opened. As with many spices and salts you've cooked with on this channel, I look forward to trying MSG in my own cooking!
Awesome segment-thank you!! I ordered some MSG last week to experiment with purely because you often use it. You are amazing!
I'm really interested in that difference between the cold and cooked application. Overall this was marvelously informative, as appreciated of June.
We adore msg in this house and use it in place of salt all the time ❤ as someone who grew up with most of my time in Asian homes it was a right of passage to have this next to my kosher salt ❤ thanks for breaking the mold and supporting one of my favorite spices!
your new hair is sooooo cooollllll!

Everyone who avoids msg needs to come to terms with the fact that "yeast extract" is a form of msg.
Anyone who is allergic already knows I assure you. Both will send your nervous system on the worst trip of its life.

The monosodium glutamate in chips in synthetic.....it is natural in real Parmesan cheese.
June, I bought SUMAC to season sweet potato fries and have never figured out another use. Please demystify sumac!
Sumac and zaatar ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I use sumac on chicken n pork
You can use it for any salad it add delicious sour taste or chicken
A salad/condiment of raw onion, sumac, lemon juice, and maybe parsley. I've seen it in Lebanese restaurants.
Thank you June! I was completely ready to hate this video even though I love everything of yours. You pointed out we need salt, yes. You pointed out that SOME people could have reactions while most don't, yes! Most of this people are neuroaytypical. Raising and waving hand vigoursly here. MSG can act as a stimulant being a catalyst for many reactions. Waving hand again. Thank you again for not disrespecting and dismissing those of us who really do have to deal with multiple filler reactions. 😊❤
Missed you June!! Hope your taking care of yourself as much as you take care of us! So much love in your videos. And the hair is awesome lol
Mang Juan is from the Philippines! So happy it got featured. Thanks Aaron for loving it. I don't hate you now. Haha 🙃

Yay it's June❤️ Love the hair girly. Happy to see you. I love using msg...definetly makes my cooking taste better.
Loving all your videos June! Keep em coming please 😊
Just so you know, packaging doesn't actually have to list "MSG" in the ingredients for it to contain added MSG. Because it is natural, many labels just say "Natural Flavor". which may or may not mean MSG, so it's really hard to be sure.
MSG is like the “parabens free” nonsense in skin care.
Exactly! Parabens are one of the most well researched, safest, and reliable preservatives out there. Sadly because of customer demand for “Paraben free” products, companies will use another preservative called Methylisothiazolinone, which is highly allergenic and causes lots of skin irritations for people. It’s so annoying!
My mom had an msg sensitivity for years but she's also allergic to mushrooms and egg yolks, both of which have natural msg.
But msg stigma IS real and it NEEDS to be addressed. Thank you, June!
Wow jume thanks for this info. I’ve tried food with msg and it was amazing. So I’m definitely going to keep using it. I can’t believe I just went with the hype and never tried to learn about it. Thanks again June the food 👸!
I gave msg a try awhile ago after watching June use it. I like it a lot and I’m happy to have it now
I love June. Please bring her back more often Delish!
It takes alot for her to do these videos. Take what you can and enjoy it
My MSG of choice is the Knorr chicken and shrimp bouillon powders. I add them to everything. The first ingredient is salt, second is MSG. Everybody's grandma uses Knorr, the stuff in the green and yellow jar or box, but it never gave them "Chinese restaurant syndrome". As a kid I always saw "No MSG" on things and never knew what it was or cared, but when I grew up and found out the who behind demonizing MSG, I actively sought to consume it.
11:43 Aaron: blah blah blah
June: crunch crunch crunch
MSG are literal flavor crystals! In my home, we put it on everything!!
Id love to see June have her own UA-cam channel. We love you.
I found this account over 2 weeks ago now! My favourite account of all times now!
Nice to see you again. Thank you for your channel
Love the hair!🧡
“MSG” -she whispers
Normally food producers use MSG because it’s easier and cheaper to add flavor to things. I agree with Aron in that point. It depends a lot on the budget and the objective of the product, like if it’s a more “healthy snack” or a more “organic” snack. If it’s just a regular snack they will add msg instead of mixing and combining complex flavors and spices.
It is up to you if you want to consume msg or not but as everything in our lives we need to respect other people’s opinions!! Loved the vid June!!
June went to town on those guacamole Tostitos! 😂
"Like, slightly burning plastic. In a good way." June says the darnest things.. LOL

Juneeeeeeee! We've missed you =)
Very interesting. Thank you!!! I would love a spice series.
In Malaysia, we call MSG as Ajinomoto. Regardless of what brand, we still call them Ajinomoto lol. And you know, Ajinomoto brings another level of taste to dishes especially in Asian recipes. Long live Ajinomoto! HIDUP AJINOMOTO!
We Filipinos commonly call it as Vetsin even if it's not LMAO
I usually go numb after eating Chinese food, but its due to the nirvana state I reach from consuming such perfection!
