Does the FN2 Honda Civic Type R deserve its bad reputation?

  • In the eyes of many, the FN2 Type R car is the runt of the Civic litter, less sharp than the legendary EP3 that came before it. But does this car really deserve its bad reputation? Or is it an underrated hot hatch bargain?

It's funny because Clarkson slated it but the stig voted it the best in the top gear magazine Haha, ill take the stigs recommendation anyway, (and I did) mines running 256 hp which is more than enough in one if these.

I’m lucky to have a FK2 also. The FK2 just doesn’t sound quite as nice. You can only get your foot down for 2 or 3 seconds before doing crazy licence losing speed. I would say, arguably, the FN2 is a little more usable fun on the streets. That’s not withstanding the suspension, which can only be described as being thrown down a flight of stairs! Enjoy your FN2, you miss it if you let it go.

We have owned 5 type Rs in our family so I would like to give my thoughts. These were, 2 Ep3,s 2 FN2,s plus an Integra DC2 owned by my two sons and I, one of the FN2S was mine (Championship White model). All these cars are a great driving experience. The EP3 is a great car and in my opinion has a better gearbox than the FN2 which is definitely not as slick as the EP3. The engines are very similar apart from the different Vtec cross over rpm speeds. The ride is the biggest difference with the FN2 being too firm in the main, not to bad in the front but on the wrong roads would shake your fillings loose sitting in the back. Having said all that if you are traveling at very high speeds this rigidity works in the FN2,s favor being a far more stable platform than a standard EP3 which would get a tad twitchy getting close to 3 figures.
I think that when the EP3,s came out it was such a game changer in performance that it set the benchmark for all other hot hatches, so when the FN2 arrived the press expected another big leap in performance and in essence the engines are pretty much the same which was ridiculed by the likes of Clarkson and co.
For me the pick of the bunch is the DC2 Integra being far more old school and handles beautifully.

As an owner of a 2007 FN2 since 4 years I can tell you that yes the confort/ride is utterly rubbish. But I've tested an EP3 with 248hp on a good country road and the car feels way lighter and easy to place into corner (tripod mod ^^) the drawbag is that yes the VTEC is quit at the top of the rev range and I didn't felt VTEC kicked in as much as my fn2. The FN2 is amazingly stable when you're inside the corner/bend. But as a drawbag still you feel the lack of lsd and the rear axle which is not as agile as the EP3. So to conclude, if you want something utterly fun about the chassis, take an EP3. Otherwise if you want a bit of confort (cruise control/sat nav) for every day and a lot of fun about these special engines, an original look and confidence/stability into the bends take the FN2 . I'll never sell mine for anything in the world. And even if you're a fan of Clarkson or whatever, don't give a shit about what he says try one and then you'll be able to talk..

Great review - it's interesting how perspective changes as the car grows older. Whilst the EP3 is a great car, it does genuinely look like a van and it's legendary reputation does push the price up in comparison to the FN2. The FN2 is also pretty clever when it comes to packaging, the boot is huge for a car in this class, if that matters to you! In the UK at least they're great value too compared to something like a Golf GTI, and arguably more reliable.

Unlike most of you, I live in the US and we have only just gotten the Type R version. Previously we had Civics which were not always hatchbacks. I had a 2007 Civic Si in a 4 door sedan body style, and it too had the 2 liter VTEC. It handled wonderfully, and was built very well. It had 2 speeds: slower than a bicycle around town where it was a torque-less wonder, or hair on fire when the revs were up. No midrange whatsoever.
In my opinion, the FN2 is far better looking than the EP3. The EP3 we had here had 5 speeds and was geared terribly for highway driving.

It's more stable, less nervous, much better interior than in its predecessor - more refined. And I know that this is matter of taste - but for me it's prettier than IX / X gen.. It's not like everyone have to cut fractions of the seconds on theirs way work/home.. Also in topic of downforce on the rear axle - without proper one it's easier to spin FF the car on high speed corners..

    • @StuTubed
      @StuTubed 4 роки тому +2

Couldn't agree more. So many people get that wrong about front drive cars and rear wings. FWD cars benefit from rear downforce just as much as RWD cars do, they both have rear wheels after all, and they need traction in corners (which is one of the main benefits of rear aero devices). I won't get into the spoiler vs wing thing either.

Suspension is hard and crashy over bumps but the fixed rear suspension means the car is nowhere as compliant and easy to dart from corner to corner, we a propensity to understeer. The interior is better in some ways but the seat adjustment is a pain and if you move the seat to get to the rear the seat goes back to default so you have to reset the whole position to drive! The car is heavier and slower than the one it replaced with worse suspension and 1bhp more. I have driven a super charged one and great but its still got pants suspension, you can get better coils to help but the cost cutting rear beam is what killed this car, that and it needed 220bhp stock.

It's a bloody bold design. Pushed the boat out aesthetically more than the Mk1 Focus or the Mk1 TT. The FN2 is a car that seemed compromised by the 8G platform. The EP3 looks and feels like the vision for the 7G, and every other variant was a compromise to suit all budgets.
The FN2 is a decent stand alone car, but for similar money, maybe a few extra quid, I'd sooner have a Megane 225, a 182 or even a Mini R53 with a pulley swap.

Great video. You're right that the biggest problem with the FN2 is that the EP3 is so good. It's just such a damn shame that the EP3 is one of the ugliest cars ever made. There's not one thing that doesn't look fussy, it all looks a bit "off" in a way that's hard to sum up. Plus, the rear and front lights are a mess, the windscreen angle is too steep for the rear glass angle and the dashboard and interior is awful. Amazing cars but I just couldn't own one. To be fair though, the FN2 looked cutting edge when it came out and it's starting to look a little weird unless in Type R trim and/or Black. 😂

@@Teddymac86 Hi. I ended up buying the 1.8 petrol type s manual 3 door from 2005. I just couldn't find a good enough example of a type r in my budget, they were either clearly abused or from traders with zero history and suspicious noises... And I didn't have the patience to drive up and down the country. If I found a good r I would have probably bought it. What I got in the end was a clean type s gt, great spec, from a decent private seller, and it was fine as a daily. I ended up changing the clutch as it was too heavy for my liking so pay attention to that. Cost me £500 ish incl labour. I also tested the ishift auto, not your usual auto but for city driving I reckon it's doable if you learn how to use it (although many people advise against it). I changed the gear knob & gaiter immediately as it was awful! I am not a diesel guy, prefer high revving petrols every time, but heard the 2.2 has it's advantages. My petrol could do 40mpg + average, good enough. Comfortable seats, could fit 5 adults easy, ridiculously huge boot. I found one with a spare wheel (vs fix a flat foam) which I recommend for peace of mind. Crashy suspension was very annoying, also cheap plastics and stereo, but thats about the only negatives. Great design, I liked the dash with central rev counter a lot, super original which I value. No issues with reliability at all maybe apart from electric folding mirrors but that was an easy fix. I hope you find a good example! I now sold it for a mx5 nc, very different car but a lot of fun, plus I don't really need a practical car that much. I miss the honda seats though, the ones in the mx5 are no good.

A fair review, the vast majority of drivers won't have the talent to drive either this or the EP3 to the point where the handling is noticeable, especially not on regular roads. The steering complaint is pretty much every car of that era with electric power steering. I see the FN2 being sought after sooner or later as it's one of the last NA hot hatches, as in the video it is double edged as they suck outside of the power band but arguably offer a purer driving experience than a modern turbo hatch.

Having driven the 150 hp version of this generation Civic for a couple of weeks, I can confirm most of the criticism. I had a Mk 5 Golf GTI back then and the luke-warm Civic had a much worse ride and chassis than the hot Golf. The GTI was actually more comfortable under most circumstances than the Civic. It also felt much bigger than the Golf, the leather on the seats felt cheaper and the rear doors were shaped in such a way that uninitiated, normal-sized back-seat-passengers could easily hit their heads when entering or exiting the car. And while I loved the Star-Trek-dash, the interior wasn't quite up there WRT quality when compared to a Golf, either.
Still: To this day I really like the styling of the Civic, inside and out, both on the Type R and on "normal" trim-lines.
The main reasons why I would always go for the Golf (again) are size (the Civic is just too large for my taste), the Honda's inferior suspension and my suspicion that the 201hp version of that engine will feel stressed out by this heavier Civic.
