Smart move by Harper's bazaar. Using the same concept yara is doing, but with actual board certified dermatologists. They definitely saw the popularity of Yara's series essentially bashing their content, discrediting them, probably bordering defamation. Beat her at her own game. I really don't understand why people follow Yara, because her opinions are always changing (based on who's sponsoring her or advertising *cough* Susan and Sharzad show *cough*), and she hasn't had any medical/aesthetic formal certification either.
It’s genetic. My dermatologist said those who were born with the not so lucky disposition for good skin will take a lot of work and money to achieve a better skin but comparing to someone who was born with the good base (genetic) it’d be hard to compete against it. However she empathised this is dependable on how you take care of your skin regardless of your genetic base. consistency and maintenance is key - you might get away with abusing/neglecting your skin in 20s but once you hit 30s/40s the consequence of your past neglect/abuse will begin to show. She also told me your skin care should change depending on your skin cycle for example, during menstrual cycle the hormones can make your skin extra sensitive so she told me to avoid any exfoliating/strong skin products and simple is better focusing on moisturiser and sunscreen.
There's a part of genetics for sure but I also think that in the long run they will lose that skin if they don't treat it well. I've seen it on friends who got older and even on my husband who his getting is first wrinkles at 30 (he was 24 when we met and had a gorgeous skin).

If you have oily skin ALWAYS use a moisturiser. ALWAYS. It actually stops your skin from overproducing oil and gives you a healthy glow while softening your skin and preventing acne.
All I can say is that yes nowadays everyone act like they are experts. However even dermatologists have different opinions, so what she is saying in this video is not the definitive truth. Fx many other dermatologists believe fragrance is something always should be avoided even though you don’t have sensitive skin because of the risk of becoming sensitized is always there. Just today I heard on tv that more and more people here in Denmark are becoming allergic to fragrance :/
THANK YOU for this! That's what I'm saying, yes everyone thinks they're an expert, but since there's so much disagreement even in the field of dermatology, her answers aren't the end all be all, especially since she differs from what many other dermatologists say.
sash A yea I agree but we shouldn’t be blinded by education if that makes sense. So much information is accessible to everyone (books and the internet which has lots of research papers) .. I mean obviously it’s an advantage to have a background in medicine or something similar but everyone can learn :)

...on top of HA acid. Especially if u live in a humid climate or have oily skin. She didn’t just say u don’t always have to use a moisturizer in regular everyday contexts. Edit: or maybe not. I’m still watching the video at the serum section so maybe she mentions it later in the video.
In the book Beyond the Skin, Dr. Sandy Skotnicki (a canadian dermatologist) says the same thing. If your skin is already moisturized and you live in a humid weather, there’s no need for a moisturizer.
A moisturizer is generally either one of, or a combination of 3 things: a humectant, occlusive and emollient. What they are defined as will often depend on the dermatologist that you see based off of where they studied etc. You don't always need all three of them depending on skin type and climate. An occlusive prevents your skin from losing moisture to the surrounding atmosphere. If you are very oily the natural oils that you produce already act like an occlusive, similarly if you live in a humid environment, you don't have to worry about losing water to the air. Emollients are present in a variety of products already outside of things labeled as a moisturizer, and the HA in this case is already the humectant. Without knowing the full background of a person and the products that they are using you cannot say for certain any of these things are missing. EDIT: She literally goes through this towards the end.
I put on humectants first. Then, sunscreen. I follow with my favorite occlusive--petroleum jelly. But I feel it is important to use a humectant and sunscreen that has no fragrance. Fragrance can cause an allergic reaction. This is simply to avoid a reaction that can arise from prolonged--sealed--contact with the skin.
HA is a humectant/hydrator.... def doesn't do the same thing as a moisturizer. It's fine if you don't need a moisturizer but HA is not one. i'm a chemist btw
@@teas.9566 yeah and also how she said you can use a scrub on your eye area as long as you're being gentle... i mean yeah i guess but isn't it better to just avoid it? Wrinkles don't form immediately so can you really know you're being gentle enough? And what about the harshness of the ingredients/particles in the scrubs themselves?
That conflict's with what another derm said a few episodes back. She said coconut oil can prevent moisture from penetrating your skin. The same derm also said hyaluronic acid is not a moisturizer
Dr dray on UA-cam another derm is where I heard not to use SA at same timed day as an Retinoid to avoid the SA having an impact on the effectiveness on the Retinoid not sure which one is right
Natalynn Butz I trust her a lot more. She actually remembers the science behind things. She keeps up with research. She isn’t swayed by cosmetic claims. She’s a no bullshit person.
I've been using the Aztec healing clay on my face. It cleared up my acne. My face is minimally oily now. I hate the pulsating sensation it gives and your face is so dry after but it really really works for me. All I do is wash my face with any cleanser, apply the clay mask and moisturize.
I'm an oily acne prone skin living in tropical country with high humidity and I'm not wearing moisturizer bcs I don't need it and totally fine. And when I tried to use a moisturizer my skin breakout 😔
I don’t know why some dermatologists say actives cancel each other out they don’t. And in fact there is scientific studies showing the efficacy of using retinol & retinoids together. And oils are not moisturising. Coconut oil is just plain bad oil for your face.
actives can definitely cancel each other, they just have to change the skin's ph to do so. if some active is only "active" in a certain pH then it won't work
i went to a dermatologist, i asked what can i do to borrow those sun freckles and pigment spots, fine lines and some milia, gave me a tretinoid based cream that i have to get from the chemist...is taking some time but it does help, i use it at night and a sunblock the next day...not bad
am i wrong in thinking that most plant oils are emollients? I know some oils can be occlusive but i think she was approaching this a bit too simply. and shouldn't a good moisturiser have humectants emollients and occlusives?
I wash my face twice a day - once in the shower (morning), and the other time (at night) in the bathroom sink with a face cloth (not to be confused with makeup cloths). Is that okay? I know face cloths might be old school, but I have been using them for 20 years at night. I don't scrub harshly or anything, I just use them to remove my gel cleanser off my face.
I am finally realizing that there are better ways to take care of my skin to keep it as young and clear as possible. This realization has to go to beauty influencer Jackie Aina!!! My question is how do I find the right dermatologist for me? What questions should I as to find the right one for me?
Yes HA forms a barrier on the skin and gives a soft moisturizing effect that makes skin smoother. Because the molecules are too large to soak into the skin it sits on the skin’s surface and acts as a moisturiser through its humectant properties.
Hey! I'm no expert but I do know that humectants like HA have the ability to bring water to the surface of the skin in order to moisturize the top layer of the epidermis. However, even if you do have oily skin, it's still good to put an actual moisturizer on top to seal in that water to keep your skin from experiencing trans-epidermal water loss.
When you use a retinol cream, for example the olay night time retinol cream is it effective? Or do you have to use something more concentrated like the differin cream suggested by DR. Bae?
I would definitely recommend using adapolene (brand name, differin) that you can buy at the drug store. Store bought retinols require your skin to do the work versus adapolene or a prescription retinoid like tretinoin that's formulation gets your cells to act right ;) I've been on tretinoin (retin a) for 2 months now. I previously used a store bough retinol from Drunk Elephant that I think really prepared my skin for using prescription strength but didnt have the visible effects I've seen with my Retin a. I would say go slow with the differin if you decide to go with it. Make sure your skin is moisturized before and after and I promise it will work better than any anti aging cream or over the counter retinol. Good luck!! 🦋
1 year ago, my skin was full of acne, big and small and scars, the first time it happen was because I'm using blackhead tools, but now my skin is flawless and glowy, I'm using kangen water from japan (acidic and beauty water for acne, and moisturize), safi gold essence for the texture, and good old beauty routine like face wash, chemical peel to erase the scar, for 1 year though

...on top of HA acid. Especially if u live in a humid climate or have oily skin. She didn’t just say u don’t always have to use a moisturizer in regular everyday contexts. Edit: or maybe not. I’m still watching the video at the serum section so maybe she mentions it later in the video.
YES! When i heard her say that i immediately paused the video and went to the comments (And saw yours). Its odd hearing a Dermatologist say that .
NEWSFLASH: Differin Gel sells out worldwide!

Sunscreen is supposed to be the last step
i love how she used mathematical terms such as multifactorial and common denominator in the video LOL
Doctors have to go through at least a Calculus 2 :)
Plss talk about hairfall bcoz everyone has this problem
My hairfall is so bad 😭 Seeing this dermatologist’s beautiful hair, I need to know her secrets! Lol
She is f**king gorgeous.
HA is a humectant/hydrator.... def doesn't do the same thing as a moisturizer. It's fine if you don't need a moisturizer but HA is not one. i'm a chemist btw
Yeah I was confused by that comment lol. I've never heard a dermatologist say something like that before.
Her last name is ‘Bae’ who wouldn’t wife that 😂🤣
She said u can use coconut oil as moisturizers isn't coconut oil clogg your pores?
To a certain degree, it is
But some people are less prone to pore clogging and acne, and it works wonderful for them
You just have to know your skin
i think she meant if it works for you. some people can tolerate coconut oil on their skin :)
That conflict's with what another derm said a few episodes back. She said coconut oil can prevent moisture from penetrating your skin. The same derm also said hyaluronic acid is not a moisturizer
one of my work mates use vaseline petroleum as her moisturizer every day and she didn’t have any problem with that...
She said IF it works for you.....meaning it already doesn't clog pores of SOME people
What blusher is she wearing 😍 l need that.
Amen! Finally a derm with some semblance of a conscience to recommend differin gel instead of peddling some rip-off retinol to people!
Tretinoin made the worst acne of my life. Two months i couldn't even move my face from the incredible painful cystic acne.
that's called purging. tret increases the rate of cell turnover.
@@anika5094 purging doesn't last 2 months.it was an allergic reaction
@@GuayEsBlanca purging can last longer than 3 months. Some people purge for 6 months until they see results
@@GuayEsBlanca My purge lasted for 4 months.
Doctor Bae is so beautiful!😍
I used the Differin Brand spot remover. I cannot believe how fast it worked.
Dr Sam Bunting next, please!!!!
I would love to see Dr. Dray in here.. 😊
🙌🙌🙌
YESSS 👏🏼
Yes please

Yaaassss!!! Bring in the expert!
This is the best fucking series on the internet right now. Besides whatever JVN puts out. THANK YOU HB!!!!!
Coconut oil is just plain bad oil for your face.
actives can definitely cancel each other, they just have to change the skin's ph to do so. if some active is only "active" in a certain pH then it won't work
👏🏼👏🏼 they all say different information for the skin. 🧐
Beautiful, down to earth and so knowledgeable! 😍 I need a bae like this in my life (...as my derm of course~ I don’t know what you were thinking) ^^
I can listen to her talk all day.💖
i went to a dermatologist, i asked what can i do to borrow those sun freckles and pigment spots, fine lines and some milia, gave me a tretinoid based cream that i have to get from the chemist...is taking some time but it does help, i use it at night and a sunblock the next day...not bad
All the dermatologists in these series have a very satisfying looking skin...lol..obviously since they are dermatologists.
Can we just get the go to bed with me series with dermatologist?
What's the best way to avoid overconsumption of skincare
am i wrong in thinking that most plant oils are emollients? I know some oils can be occlusive but i think she was approaching this a bit too simply. and shouldn't a good moisturiser have humectants emollients and occlusives?
5:52 Hyaluronic Acid is a Humectant, not a Moisturizer.
According to her, it’s a humectant moisturizer, not an occlusive moisturizer
I wash my face twice a day - once in the shower (morning), and the other time (at night) in the bathroom sink with a face cloth (not to be confused with makeup cloths). Is that okay? I know face cloths might be old school, but I have been using them for 20 years at night. I don't scrub harshly or anything, I just use them to remove my gel cleanser off my face.
I like how you guys gently put us in our place with facts and education. 😂😂😂
I need to know what are the dermatologist advices against pollution pleaseeeeee
I am finally realizing that there are better ways to take care of my skin to keep it as young and clear as possible. This realization has to go to beauty influencer Jackie Aina!!! My question is how do I find the right dermatologist for me? What questions should I as to find the right one for me?
P.S.
I live in the Bronx, but I will travel to Manhattan
I thought moisturizer is a must bc it seals everything in...since HA is a humectant
When she said hyalaronic acid is moisturizer I was confused. Really?
Same. I’ve seen others break down the need of hydrating humectants, emollients & occlusives for moisturizer to prevent tewl
Yes HA forms a barrier on the skin and gives a soft moisturizing effect that makes skin smoother. Because the molecules are too large to soak into the skin it sits on the skin’s surface and acts as a moisturiser through its humectant properties.
I have heard somewhere that even though hyaluronic acid is a humectant it's still technically moisturisising for the skin
Im no expert but Dr. Dray is and shes explained extensively why using HA alone can be drying long term.
Good luck!! 🦋
I want to see her recommenced products!
I’m confused by some of her responses, especially about Retinoid and Vitamin C, she doesn’t respond fully!
Tatyana Sh yeah I must say I preferred the previous Dr Henry’s answers!
Shes a “do what works for you” kinda derm
Cherol_k yes because I’m sure everyone is different. (e.g. that’s why there are different strength of retinol 1%, 0.5%, 0.25%, etc.)
Tretinoin*
Can We Use Rose Water Before using Serum??
So true, Med school is exhausting and a long career but worth it :D Thank you so much Dr. Bae
I love this series. Education from experts 💜
Is it ever too early to use a retinol?
It would be lovely to have Dr. Dray on here, shes probably addressed all these issues from A to Z but Dr. Dray is such a national treasure I dont mind the reminders 😊💕
