I've never drove a Beetle and I'm not in the market for one, but I found this video very informative and interesting. I appreciate your thoroughness in going over the entire car. I know which channel I'm going to binge next!
Thank you for being here, I truly appreciate that. They are great little cars, a very easy to maintain. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment.
Slade, I've been folling you for 4 years now. I really appreciate your passion and your videos. I noticed you have a bit of a shake in your hand. I don't want to be rude in a public forum but I would hate myself more for keeping quiet if I said nothing. I think you may want to address it if you have not. Anyway, sorry to distract. I bought a 72 bug today with a bit of cancer and tuned in for some of your VW guru insight. Never Surrender!!
Thank you my friend, especially for caring. I have what they referred to as tremors, after going over a few things with a doctor. Unfortunately it’s genetic through my family. However I noticed they have calm down lately after I started working out. When my doctor told me to do that, I didn’t think it would help but it’s starting to make a difference already. Now of course I have tendinitis. 🙄 Congrats on your 72! They’re all fixable! And worth the effort!!
Super video, good information and to the point. If the owner doesn’t want you check something ,great advice to walk away. Looking forward to the next video.
Thank you Mike, I always appreciate you stopping by. Do you mean the one with the bracket? If so, that’s the one the bolts to the Transaxle. I did a couple videos on that before.
Great video on all the problems that beetles and other cars can have. you listed them practically all up and its always better to look at all off them and after that you can decide if you buy it. your the best with all the info in this video, way to go Tony and keep them coming.
Thank you so much my friend I truly appreciate the kind words. I surely don’t know everything, and I still learn a little tips and tricks along the way.
Thanks for all this great info. I think the best piece of advice was your suggestion to take a buddy along... good remedy if you've got a nasty case of "buy any old pile of c**p-itis."
Good video Slade. A lot of stuff to look for on old bugs. I've had several. Seems like all of them had oil leaks, lol. I don't like leaks but I guess I can live with some drips as long as it doesn't pour out. The one I bought last year drips some on the bottom center seam, toward to front side of the car. But its nothing to loose sleep over I guess. If you read this soon Slade, I tore into rear wheel bearings yesterday. I cant get the inside grease seal to pop out. Is there a trick to it. Maybe I haven't got rough enough. I don't want to scar up something though. Thanks, EE.
I honestly never had trouble getting the grease seal out. I would try to be a little bit more tough with it. Don’t act like a gorilla, but give some more force.
@@SladesVWBeetle Its always my luck Slade, lol. Thanks for replying buddy. I didnt feel up to messing with it today. Ill give it a go tomorrow. Gotta get this baby rolling again so the wife will be happy. 😉EE
I know you can't cover everything, but look for oil leaks, color of oil, level of oil, smell of the oil...is there oil in the car (I looked a 71 Riv with a 455 and it had 2 quarts of oil under the hood, so that car did use oil).. Avoid any car with spring loaded push rod tubes, the springs fail as enginge gets warm, and engine self destucts...I also look to see if tail lights and turn signals are symmetrical, it's an ocd thing and are the rear wheels worn out on the inside ? And I never buy a car with a black headliner. Good luck Beetle hunters !
Thank you Dan! I truly appreciate you chiming in. That’s what this is all about the community helping each other. It seems like on film sometimes, I will get forgetful from trying to cover too many things. Thank you so much for being here.
I just bought a 1973 super beetle that seems to be in good condition and drivable. There is bubbling around the death foam area which I will address. As we were driving the other day it lost power until it died a minute later I was able to start it and it drove again without a problem for maybe a half mile and did the same thing. Five times until I get was able to get home. What are your thoughts on why did this? I pulled the fuel tank and everything was OK also the car has electric fuel pump so I don’t believe it was a fuel issue. Thanks for any help you can give.
I think you will be really surprised if you did a body off on that car. I was on my dads 62 ghia vert top of heater channels looked good but the bottom was toast but you would have never seen it if we didn’t do a body off.

Yet another FANTASTIC video brother! I am so very thankful for you and your videos!
Thank you very much, I truly appreciate the kind words brother. I really do!
Wise words. I've seen far too many people get stung badly by not knowing what to look for and not just on VW's. It really pays to do your homework.
Thanks Randall, I’m sure I have missed a couple of things, but I wanted to point out the main things to check.
@@SladesVWBeetle One thing I always tell people to carry is a magnet. On body panels they're great for finding bondo and fiberglass.

Using a small mirror to look behind body panels help too.

You’re welcome my friend. Just don’t go crazy on it, but I’ve never really had a problem getting one out. Just a little forcefulness.
