I had to fix the brake handle on my 72 super beetle, the button was pushed way in so I had to reset the cats paw! I discovered the root cause, the cables were not running under the shoes on the back of the handle, they must have popped off and were just running under the pivot pin! The previous owner apparently didn’t understand what was wrong and had run the adjustment nuts all the way in to the end of the threads! So putting the cables on correctly after backing the nuts off and resetting the cats paw, it all works well again!
Oh wow!!! I never had that happen before. I’m actually going to pin your comment to the top so other see that. Thank you for taking the time to comment and explain that situation I truly appreciate it.
This is the perfect video for what I was looking for
Just had this happen on my 72 Beetle the other day while on a drive around the block. This video saved me a lot of head-scratching and kept me from procrastinating on yet another project! fixed and back in action in about 45 min. Great video!
31:42 Karma led me here!!! I just had my handbrake lever "fall apart" and now I know why. I also now know how to fix it! I bow at your feet oh Master. Thanks mate, great instructions. Cheers from Australia.
The "cat's paw" flipped around on my wives '67 Type 3 so this video is coming in very handy right now. Thanks!
Black w/ Red interior will look very nice, and match your backdrop.
Well, this video has sure helped me. When i got my beetle 2 years ago It didnt have the hand brake working. I still havent fixed it but you just showed me how. thank you!
That’s outstanding!! I truly like when the videos help others!!
That's a beautiful Red the shine is as if you powder coated it and Heathers brown towel gives it a nice contrast👍😎
😂 not funny!
Sorry didn't mean to overstep🤙✌
@@eduardorodriguez3262 ohh I was joking with you!!!! 🤗 He is off the hook, he bought me all new towels! 😂
Ok kool😎
@@eduardorodriguez3262 👍😁🤗
Great video! Thank you for putting this together.
Thanks for being here ray!
Just got a 72 Super Beetle and have to reset the e brake handle. This video was really helpful, thanks for taking the time to make it!
love love love the red interior idea. thats a real nice finish
Thank you Casey, thank you for being here I appreciate it.
Loving the Red for interior!
I think it’s the best choice, reminds me of the 60s.
Two things you should mention when installing the handle, the notch in the toothed part needs to hook onto the top edge of the tunnel and be sure the cables route under the shoes on the bottom rear of the brake lever. I figured that all out trial and error!
Great video!
Thank you sir! I was pretty much refurbishing my handle so I showed how it function. Probably would’ve been a good idea to do the complete install the handle. I had to remove it again for floor work lol Thank you.
That red turned out nice. Great video, thanks
Thank you Williams, and thanks for always being here my friend.
Nice job 👍... The red looks great. Have a good weekend..
Thanks Eugene, and thanks for always being here.
Thanks Slade! This is will be my next project! your the best
Thank you!! And thanks for the kind words!
Slade, I really appreciate all the detail. I'm a bit of a perfectionist I'm one of those while I'm there kind of guys. There's no sense in leaving something it may come back to haunt you. I'm excited about the red with the black. That tells me that the body works going to have to be primo. Can't wait great video as always. 💪🏼💯👍🏻💙
Thank you Leonard I appreciate the comment! Oh yeah doing black is almost going to give me a lot of extra work!! 🤦🏼♂️😁
Nice job again Tony, that will help a lot off guy’s with that specific problem. O a tip, when your done painting with a rattle can, flip it over and spray the paint out off the tube until it’s clear. No more blocked nuzzle.
Thanks my friend! Believe it or not I really do that. To make sure the nozzles cleaned out. My dad taught me that many years ago.
@@SladesVWBeetle he taught you well then.
I save all the nozzles when empty. A can of quality rattle isn’t cheap these days.
I love the red!
Thank you Gordon, I think the red will accent the interior very nicely.
Ha! Ironically I plan to remove my emergency handle because the prior owner painted it red and I want to go back to factory black. Thank you for this how to video….looks easy enough to do!
That’s awesome, I am glad when these videos help others.
Ha, love that big VCR recorder camera. I remember those before we had mobile phones. Thanks again for your videos on The VWs they are invaluable.

release button came jumping out today (applied the e-brake with brakes still out of adjustment and the paw jumped the top tooth) and I immediately thought “I’m pretty sure Slade just posted a video on this…”

Always good to see how to dissemble a part, even if you know how it’s done. Great video.
Oh the red looks awesome.
Thank you Gregg, and thanks for always being here I truly appreciate it.
Awesome video. I like how you go into details in what you do. I will be referring to this video when I do this. Love the red. It’s gonna look awesome with the interior
Thank you my friend, thanks for being part of it all.
The very first repair I had to do on my 66 was the e-brake handle because the transport driver pulled up on it too far. Great tutorial once again 👏👏👏
Thank you!!
Good video bro, it helped me a lot..
Great tips!
Thank you John, I always hope these videos help others.

Thanks my friend that’s very nice of you to say. I want to keep it free here, so everybody can enjoy it. Thank you so much for the suggestion.
Thnx m8 mine was completely disassembled and I didn't know how to put it back together.
Thanks
nice video great job explaining everything. that thing looks almost new. mine was cracked so i needed to weld that barrol at the bottom back in. im a fan of heating the metal befor paint too i think it helps cure the paint.
You’re so right Dennis, it truly does help heating the metal, and warming the paint. I’ve noticed a huge difference in how it flows.
Nice video Slades. You make it look easy. I did my brake handle on my ‘68 and it seemed harder than how you did it on your ‘68. Keep up the videos, I really like them. Jim S
Thank you James!! I appreciate the kind comment!
Great video ,, My 70 “Crack Pipe” Impound
Yard beetle has the rod sprung out . I thought something might be missing . I’ll reassemble tomorrow with new cables . Thank you
Thank you for taking the time to leave the comment, good luck to you!
Great video!! I finally got my 1964 VW and pulled my ebrake all the 🆙 Once I reset the ebrake? Will my brakes works again?
Very interesting video thank you for sharing it another thing I like the way you dress looking sharp and cool good on you keep it up body
Thanks very much!!
Should you adjust the screws while the handle is say 3 clicks up then when you pull it to say 6 clicks everything is locked up?
I found that my e brake did not work. But I found the small handles on each side that controls the heater box flaps seemed to alow the handle to stay up and stop the car 🤔
using a heat gun between coats works great...i do it all the time
but i would never use rustolly paint...ever!!!!!! takes to long to dry!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for chiming in, I truly appreciate it.
You have left no stone unturned.
Thank you Terry, I appreciate the kind comment!
shoulda used appliance epoxy, that stuff is cheap and really tough
Maybe I should look into that, that is not a bad idea thank you so much for chiming in.
@@SladesVWBeetle I used it on my vent windows for my 71 bug after sand blasting, looks very nice
nice.
Thank you Jim, thank you for always commenting.
