    Very nice video. Not rushed. I'm an old guy, 71 and counting. I'm not an owner, yet. But I'm hoping to find a daily driver to enjoy soon. I've subscribed and will make good use of your videos if I can find a good car at a decent price. Thank you for helping.

    Thanks for the information and humor! lol I'm going to look at a 2003 VW Beetle tomorrow and was pretty nervous about it, but I wrote down a list while watching your video and feel more confident. I am a guppy (what my family calls naïve/honest and thinking others will try to be the same) but definitely picked up pointers for checking stability of a VW Beetle and in asking pointed questions of the person selling the VW Beetle. Thanks again! :)

    Yep always important to check them. As a mechanic I know a good amount as to what too look for. I know the air cooled VW mechanic in town too he said most of the same stuff you did. Mine is solid it has a spot of rust on the door under the window but that’s it so I spray it with WD40 before it rains and it hasn’t spread any so that’s good.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 роки тому +4

      Yes, you definitely have to go over any car pretty well. These ones you really have to check into. I’m sure I missed a couple of things, when you’re filming, and your brains everywhere. 😂
      I got lucky with this car, it came from Arizona. So being in the rust belt that was a great treat for me. The 68 I picked up is fairly solid so I might’ve got lucky again. We will see soon when I pull it into the garage and start taking everything apart.

      @@SladesVWBeetle I bought a one owner 1971 Super Beetle Autostick from a man who was in the Wermacht. He only drove it around San Diego streets. He was 96 years old. I flew sight unseen from the East Coast to buy it for $6500. I never owned a VW bug, just my father's 53 after WWII. Didn't know anything about them. It was all original and needed a lot of TLC. After five years I learned a lot and restored the car. It had the original paint and zero rust. I would never buy a car other than from Cali. I learned my lesson in1986 after buying a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner from New England. I invested 10k in resto and small rust spot came back. Unless it's an off the chassis rotisserie sandblasting and lead loading repair, I will pass. Bondo is garbage. New water based paints look terrible. Lacquer or nothing IMO.

    Awesome tips, also a common place to look for corrosion is below the brake fluid reservoir , spillage is common, my beetle had a little rot between the door hinge and fender where the fluid seeped in. I recently watched the engine rebuild videos you posted it was very helpful ,my engine had an oil leak so I pulled the engine out replaced the gaskets and seals and while I was at it replaced the clutch as well. I was wondering if you could do a video on carburetor tuning and engine timing especially with the different pulley notches ,much appreciated.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 роки тому

      Thanks for being here, and I actually will be doing a video very shortly on timing adjustment. And of course tuning the carburetor. I have another carburetor arriving here Thursday I’m going to test out. And yes that is a very good tip below the brake fluid reservoir. Outstanding! I have a few videos on here with carburetor adjustment before putting it on the car.

      My 68 beetle was my daily driver in the early 2,000's. I got tired of putting a quart of oil in every tank of gas. Pulled the engine out of her one weekend and replaced all the engine gaskets. Drove it to work Monday thru Thursday and she ran great. No drops of oil anywhere. Friday morning on the way to work she started losing power on me and the farther we went the more she smoked. It was so bad when I pulled into work I couldn't see behind me. Was only a ten mile drive to work. Was running late so I ran inside and punched in. Came back out at lunch time and found the motor was locked up. Had to have her towed back home. 😢

    Hi Slade, I've been watching your videos. I'm learning a lot. TY! I have a 63 Rag Top. (Still original to the car) Looks alot like the condition yours is in in this video. SHELL of a car. I need HELP!!! I LOVE LOVE my bug but I have ZERO help with it and EVERYBODY telling me I'm wasting my time with it, it's to far gone, your going to spend more money restoring it...... What are your suggestions? I've bought it 5 years ago in the shape condition it's in and it's been sitting in my storage building ever since. (Time capsule) I've never even opened the doors to my building. I need a motor for it and a back windshield (that broke when I moved it). It has a transmission but I do not know the condition of it. I have all it's "parts" that's been taken off of it. So now it looks like a complete shell of a bug. Any suggestions please help.

    Other things to check, does it have all the cooling tin? Look for crappy aftermarket parts, understand what modifications previous owners have made. My new 74 beetle has dual carbs, which seems to have been done well, but the breather wasn’t hooked up, and the entire thermostat system was missing. Body and structure is nice though, so it was a decent buy. But a few things to address, some gas smell, it wil also need all new fuel hoses under the hood. Does the shifter linkage need work? Does it pop out of gear? Hard to downshift? Budget for a trans rebuild. Does the steering have play? Budget for a steering box or tie rods.

    hey bud, taking a shot in the dark that youll answer . you have been very helpful before. anyways, ive heard the 71 circuit pannel has 10 11 and 12 jumped my question is from aug 71 to 74 i think just 11 and 12 are jumped. all i can find is 72 in my orange service manual. if memory serves me correctly, 71 is wired differently but 72 on up to 74 are all the same harness. and wires are routed the same way. bty, appreciate the videos. and ive got the hand shakes also. tbi and ptsd. rapid encounter with a shattering cinder block wall. cant figure out if shakes are from my fine va prescribed meds or the brain injury. lol. anyways, ive got a model a and a 74 beetle that keep my mind occupied when times get tough and i just about always have you on the big screen in my garage when im working on my bug. i just dont trust a lot of youtube mechanics but you are spot on and have never led me wrong yet. respectfully,

      I am quite sure I have PTSD from certain occasions.
      One of the subscribers to the community told me to start with lifting weights.
      It seems when I am stressing my muscles that’s when the tremors get worse. Like my muscles got weak with age. I did try it for a brief. I noticed the shakes were much less. I think I need to get back to doing that!! lol

      @@SladesVWBeetle thank you so much for the response. you really do find time to answer everybody like you say. i figured it out and only 11 and 12 are jumped on the 74 super. ive replaced or inspected all wires on harness and steering column. plus ive tore apart and cleaned to a new shine my entire odometer. wanted to reset to 000000 but fought off the temptation. lol. today ill be putting in new coil and distributor and tomorrow im going to see if i can get it to start. ive done everything humanly possible i can do to get it started so after today if it doesnt start something in it is grounded out where it isnt supposed to be. my granddaddy said money will fix anything and i like this bug so as much as i hate to admit it ive been through everything twice and if it doesnt work this time its going to the beetle shop so the experts can find the problem. because at this point im just going to be frying good parts if i mess around with any more of the electronics. love your videos. keep them coming. im into the beetles model A s and grady white boats. they all keep me busy. this is just for your information. no need to reply. i just like explaining my situation. thanks again for your videos.

Now of course it’s the last thing I would go after. They said they are changing their quality and stepping up to the plate, but I have yet to see it. Or maybe I just didn’t catch it yet. Sometimes at my age I dread buying more tools, but then again I guess they will get left to my son. As time goes on the quality of a lot of parts now are not what they used to be that’s for sure.

    Don't buy one without original paint and any rust. Buy a Cali car or you will regret it.

      Yeah the super is not as popular. I grabbed it since it was rust free. Now I have a 68 I’m doing next. That’s the one I’m excited to do. Thanks for commenting

      Actually in Germany they set Supers up by lowering them and souping them up. I remember one that was 911 powered and it was a beast. Looked great too.

      Should have kept the 63 also; in hindsight.
