Also, '75-later Super Beetles came with rack-and-pinion steering. If you ever visit South Africa, you will find an anomaly. They have curved-windshield STANDARD Beetles (yes, there is such a thing).
My first Beetle was a 72 Super that I bought in 1989. I didn't know the difference at the time and often regretted having the Super once I realized what I had. I made the most of it and made a "Cal-style" bug out of it. Lowering struts, one-piece windows, Empi wheels and I put a cloth rag-top in it. I dumped a ton of money into a 1776 that was way better than the car deserved. I enjoyed it, but always hated the bulbous nose. I'm much happier now w/ my '63. Opinions vary and I have no problem w/ people loving their Supers; it just wasn't/isn't my preferred style. My 72 still had the flat windshield, flat dash and smaller tail-lights.
I agree, I think what’s really attractive, as the 66 and back headlights. There’s just something about that old school look that makes me smile. Thank you so much for commenting. And thank you for being here.
I believe the 71 Super Beetle was the peak Hp beetle. Also besides handling improvements, the struts in the front made for additional luggage space in the trunk, which was a major selling point for the Super Beetle. The ‘71 SB is unique in that it had the flat windshield, old style steering wheel and oil bath engine air cleaner. I think the ‘72 SB had the plastic steering wheel and maybe a different air cleaner. Not positive on the last point. I’ve owned a ‘71 SB since 6/72. Redid the front end bushings a few years ago and it brought the handling back to normal and eliminated the infamous death-rattle associated with the SB. Great video as always. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for posting sir. Honestly I think they drive amazingly well compared to the standards. Although I have a passion for both obviously. I would like to have a 71/72 with the flat dash.
My Father had a 1972 autostick super beetle. The standard beetle's spare tire stood straight up in the front under the hood and didn't offer much protection in a front end collision. The super beetle's spare tire lay flat in the front under the hood, this made the tire absorb some of the impact and made the chances of getting out of the crash much better.
Super beetle has McPherson struts & standard beetle is torsion bar front suspension my late father was a Volkswagen mechanic at Volkswagen dealership and service manager at Central Volkswagen in Dubois pa.
20:27 Fun fact: The grill under the frunk hood was for the (optional) AC, nobody wanted in Europe for it made 1/3 of the car's price. Guess they all went to USA. We have no speed limit on German Autobahn and rather put a front oil cooler there.
Speaking of those bucket headlights... could you do a "how to" on disassembling and reassembling them, and how NOT to either send the springs into orbit or into one's face? I've been lucky so far, but I need to do a full tear down to repaint and eliminate some spot rust, and I'd like to put them back together properly. See you tonight!
Wonderful video Slade! I have a stock 1973 SB. If I may point out one more difference, the SB uses a special tow plate and towing bar from all other beetles.
I just found you guys. My first car was a '66 1300 convertible. I would like to see a video about the special edition beetles like the '72 Baja Bug; '73 Sports Bug, "74 Love Bug, Sun Bug, Fun Bug, '75 LaGrande Bug '78 and '79. Champagne Edition convertibles. European buyers got even more: the Yellow and Black edition, the Jeans Beetle, the City Beetle, the Big Beetle.
I'm German and both were offered 1200/ 34hp, 1500/ 44hp + 1600/50 hp. "LS" was "all options" + 50hp and that badge was only used until 1973. Later models just got "1200" or "1303" Only 50hp had serial disc brakes .
Funny, you brought that up. I just interviewed somebody with One yesterday and took a ride in it and went over the whole car. That will be tomorrow’s video.
Oh wow!!! Very cool!! Please don’t forget to submit your photos and a short bio to the website so I can add you to the member section!! Sladesvwbeetle.com
I purchased a 1971 Volkswagon Super Beetle with a 2000 series motor from Gateway Volkswagon at 102nd Avenue and N E Weidler Street, brand new for $2240. What was the power output of the 2000 series motor? 🌎
Actually I did that on my last one. And I’m going to do it again not too far off on this one. I used aftermarket seats, and move them back further, and a little lower. What a big difference it makes. Check the playlist on the channel. It look for seats, you’ll be able to see what I did.
I talked with an old guy who had one with that option, and that's the first question I asked given I have a 71 super beetle without it. He said it worked really well ice cold apparently, which was a surprise to me. This is in Minnesota, so hot humid summers too. Out of curiosity I also asked what happened to it, had a accident which they weren't at fault and that was pretty much the end of it. His only complaint was the heater.
From what I understand, the air conditioning surprisingly worked somewhat well. I have never had one, but I am going to look into some thing. Aftermarket air conditioning for these. If I can find it worthy, I will purchase it and do a video if it’s affordable.
@SladesVWBeetle Hopefully, if the stars align, it will happen. There are quite a few VW content channels out there. Yours is one of my go-to favorites because of your good vidiography techniques, good explanations, and showing that this isn't a hobby for only those with six-figure incomes. Keep up the great work, sir. 👍
Thank you my friend I truly appreciate the kind words, I really mean that. I just do the best that I can. And I try to keep it somewhat fun and interesting. Or sometimes I humiliate myself by showing mistakes. 🤷🏻♂️ But I like to keep it real. I think there is only a small portion of folks, that have high end dollars. I just try to keep it real. Thank you for taking the time to watch the videos, and most of all thank you for commenting.
@SladesVWBeetle I think "keeping it real" means showing mistakes and not being afraid to own it. When it's time to take a breath, walk away for a bit, then taking a new approach. My first car was a 1960 beetle with a canvas sunroof. It was towed from where I bought it, and a local VW guru put in a new fresh air 40 engine. The 6 volt electrical could be a challenge at times. 😆🙇♂️
Actually she likes doing these videos, and has a passion for the Beetles. This one was more difficult for her, she wasn’t quite sure of all the differences. Thank you so much for being there.
That’s ruthless comment. I think this couple is fantastic and she is definitely very passionate. Not everyone needs to jump and do drama to show your passion. The chemistry in them makes the videos so awesome!

Special editions would be a great video ❤
Thank you my friend, I am definitely going to do that soon. I think it will be a lot of fun.
Great information guys. I own a 73 SB and whenever I go to a VW show I always look for the SB's. Definitely more standards on display.
Great video. I had a 74 Super Beetle and it was the best car I have ever owned.
That is so awesome! And thank you for the kind comment. The super beetle is a much more comfortable ride and handles. Much better I believe.
The also made a Sparkle Bug
Also, '75-later Super Beetles came with rack-and-pinion steering. If you ever visit South Africa, you will find an anomaly. They have curved-windshield STANDARD Beetles (yes, there is such a thing).
I have seen photos of those cars. Very cool bugs. Surprised no one here in the US has built one to confuse folks at the vw shows.

My 72 super has the flat windshield
You can buy a non vented front apron.

I remember as a much younger man - the jeans / denim material interior - around 70 or 71
I love super Beetles Especially yellow ones

Thank you for leaving a comment Marty. Those McPherson struts really made a difference that’s for sure.

Do you mean the headlight buckets on 67 and up?
@@SladesVWBeetle oh, no... The fun, dangerous ones, prior. Like on my '63.
I own one of each; a 67 and a 73 SB. Good video; covered it all well. I always enjoy your channel.
Thanks very much!!
Great video, as always! A special edition video would be special!
I’m definitely going to sit down and start figuring out the video I’m not sure how many special additions there are but we are going to find out
Wonderful video Slade! I have a stock 1973 SB.

Thank you!! I appreciate the comment. I really like when you folks here add to the comments. People do read them and it gives more information
I believe the Supers also had a blower fan for the heat and defrost.
Really enjoyed this. Very informative. Once again great job. ❤❤❤
Thank you very much I truly appreciate that.
Really enjoy learning from you. Cheers from Australia
Thank you very much!
Fun video. Enjoyed the history of the standard vs SB.
Thank you so much my friend.
thank you for showing the differences would like to see a video on the limited ediition bugs i have a 73 sports bug great cars thanks once again
Thank you Sarah, I truly appreciate it. I’m definitely going to do a video like that soon.
When they made the Super Beetle they should have paited a big S like Superman has on his shirt somewhere on it.

Yes, do a special edition video.
I absolutely will my friend.
In Australia all Super beetles had a 1.6 litre engine. The 1302 was known as known as the Volkswagen "S" and the 1303 as the Volkswagen "L".
I'm German and both were offered 1200/ 34hp, 1500/ 44hp + 1600/50 hp. "LS" was "all options" + 50hp and that badge was only used until 1973. Later models just got "1200" or "1303" Only 50hp had serial disc brakes .
@HesseJamez thank you so much for the information! I truly appreciate that.
1966 was first year of factory installed seat belt
Excellent thank you!
i ended up getting a 1970 standard but i'm struggling with electrical at the moment
I love your videos! I'd love to see a special edition video!
Due the curved windshield, the 1303 frunk got a bit shorter.
Sure, special editions would be great to know about.
Keep'em coming guys!!
Please do the special edition video. I have a sport bug and it would be cool to see what else is out there.
I am definitely going to do that, I’m not sure how many they are, but I’m definitely going to find out.
The VW "Thing" (181) had small bus (T2) tail lights in Europe.....those "elephant feet" look weird & displaced on it"
Funny, you brought that up. I just interviewed somebody with One yesterday and took a ride in it and went over the whole car. That will be tomorrow’s video.
nice job.
I would buy a SB if still available 😊
Bess Is a Super Beetle a 1302 72 model, Australian Build , No Dash Pad Or Slots on the apron

??? When I last sat in a beetle I barely fit, do ya think it's possible to easily modify the seat mount I points further back for a tall person ?
Actually I did that on my last one.
And I’m going to do it again not too far off on this one.
I used aftermarket seats, and move them back further, and a little lower. What a big difference it makes.

One looks like it broke its nose and has superior suspension, one rides like a mac truck and is sexy
I appreciate that video !! Great job !!
Thank you brother.
Special Editions please
Special bugs please!

All Supers after 77 were convertibles there were no 78 super sun roofs supers
1976-79 supers were only available as convertibles. 1975 was the best and last year of the super sedan. Here in the US.
Nadie opina de las ventajas del superescarabajo. La primera es de origen y fabricación alemana.
