the reason my clutch wouldn't adjust was the last owner failing to put the right plate first. So 2 years on your vid is still adding value. Nice one chap.
Clutches I have done in the old bikes have three plates to the clutch, the two like you have and a third which is a really thin and flimsy spring/wire ring thing which sits between each set. It's interesting to see that in 40 years clutch design is basically the same!
You know the thought of doing my clutch scared me ( I do all my own work now ) but this angle and simple show made it seem fool.... well, spicy proof! Good content as always sir! X
Thanks mate for bringing the first clutch plate to my attention. We were having trouble getting neutral while motor was running and I knew it was dragging somehow. This is after full rebuild.
Hi Spicy, I really like this style of video, it's a real shame that your bike needs to go wrong for the videos :( And I really don't want Derek to go wrong on a regular basis for your sake! LOL
Go to 4:25 I did this exact same thing. Failed to notice the thinner friction plate and my clutch lever was hanging completely loose. Watched your video and realized my mistake. Thank you!
Nice one. I think I noticed some slip on my DRZ400SMK5 today. 50,000 miles in 14 years. Looks rooly ez to do. Thanks for your help. Btw, what were the torque values for the bolts? Cheers
Bit behind on your videos due to work but I gotta say I love the how to/maintenance videos. I'm a pretty new rider so am always looking at tips etc. Where did you learn this stuff or was it just trial and error?
You failed to mention that the steel plates have a curved face and a flat face similar to a crush washer. You are supposed to put the curved face towards the engine and flat face outwards on all the steels.
Thank you for this vid, having a completely loose clutch lever and wanted to know what all to watch out for, seeing that I've never done this before lol
Its an anti vibration ring, basically a round spring. As you may have seen on this video if you have that ring and the one larger plate in the wrong order it work work correctly.
I like to use the new gasket, trace it on the cardboard backing and put each bolt where it’s supposed to go to keep track of it. Marker easily comes off.
My clutch is slipping I believe. It shifts fine and take off fine in 1st. But I did a burnout and shifting into 2nd and dragged the clutch a bit and after that i couldn't wheelie in 2nd anymore so I know for a fact something is wrong.. I haven't done an oil change in a while but I should. I was riding for a few hours before the burnout and everything felt perfect. Wheelies and all. My cable seems fine. U think I need to change my plates ?
@@spicy110 I did. And this morning, I checked my adjustment, i messed with it, it started running fine and then I moved it like an idiot and fucked it up again. Now it slips with the adjustment all the way in and out. So it seems like ima have to check the plates. Thanks brother for response
hi, i have to replace the inner clutch case. is there any trick i have to know before opening it up? i know i have to get all the oil out ... :-) thanks
Err you will probably need a puller to get it off and remember to put the anti-vibration ring in the same orientation when putting back together. That's not a comprehensive list but the things that pop in my head strait off.
Anyone who follows your twitter might be able to hazard a guess to source of that popping ;) Good Video, nice to see people do a bit of maintenance on their own bike, hopefully it encourages others to give it a try.
Hehe funny, I did wonder if this was the problem but didn't want to suggest you had overseen that but to be honest clutches can be a bit tricky and for your first go you did great! I've never had a thickness problem with EBC kits but have done with cheaper kits. God what a racket, the locals must love you! 😂
+Sixth Gear Motorcycles no I bow to greater knowlage! Say anytime. But hey I learnt got myself out if it so I'm learning more. And yes I suspect I will be shot on my return
spicy110 Dunno if I have a greater knowledge, I'm self taught too and would always rather give it a go than let someone else do it. Any job is possible if you have the right tools and patience. Yeah keep a eye out for the linch mob! 😂
yeah, you gotta make sure you keep the same stack height I know it's not your fault that the plates were too big but I'm just saying for anyone else who has this problem.
yeah, I jumped the gun a bit there lol but that can cause problems my dad done his clutch on a Kawasaki ninja zx9r and his kit was short 1 friction and 1 steel but the thickness was bigger. Have you checked the thickness off the old plates to see how far out of spec they are? Nice tip for the bolts by the way, though.
yeah theres nothing worse than a sloppy clutch. So if you wanted to get the max ammount of life out of a drz clutch you could probably go to 30,000miles if you dont do any clutch up wheelies during that time lol.
Make sure you have enough slack in your clutch cable so your clutch doesn't slip during hard acceleration :) Do a motovlog on the mini bike in the back ground
+alistair tang... Yes I know, I have maintained my own bikes for 8 years. If your willing to change clutch plates odds are you will know how to adjust it. 🤗
How much of a dipstick did you feel? How many of us who aren't mechanics wouldn't have done the same thing? Now you know for next time. Never knew it was that easy to do.
the reason my clutch wouldn't adjust was the last owner failing to put the right plate first. So 2 years on your vid is still adding value. Nice one chap.
Easy mistake to make but you don't make it twice. Glad it had some value 🙂
The best instruction videos ever regardless of topic, are the ones that show the mistakes and fixes
+Joe Maloney I do agree

Fuel Idle mixture screw on the carb?? 11:50
don't forget to like scragamuffins!
Hi Spicy, I really like this style of video, it's a real shame that your bike needs to go wrong for the videos :( And I really don't want Derek to go wrong on a regular basis for your sake! LOL
ok its a like from me but I'm sure the clock ran down b4 u finished it :)
dis will really help when I do my mechanic course xD keep up the amazing work spicy =)
First time ive seen that part of the bike like that!! I will be needing to learn some things like this for my bike.
Go to 4:25
I did this exact same thing. Failed to notice the thinner friction plate and my clutch lever was hanging completely loose. Watched your video and realized my mistake. Thank you!

Thanks for your help.
Btw, what were the torque values for the bolts?

Can't remember off hand just google drz400 torque specifications and you should be able to find a PDF off with all of the torque values.
You are supposed to put the curved face towards the engine and flat face outwards on all the steels.
sounds like an fcr carb to me. just need to jet it for bbk and 3x3
awesome job, i may have to do mine in the future and this is a good reference.
did you put the steel ring spacer in with the small friction plate?
If I can recall properly, its backfiring either from overfuelling. It would need remapping on an EFI or rejetting on a carb
That sounds lit a blown ring or the bore is scored
Very informative, hope the next one ain't bad
that exhaust backfire can cause by too lean air/fuel mix need to rejet carburetor or lift needle on slide AND spark plug can do backfire
What nm mate?
all drz 400s have the odd friction plate in the bottom of the basket. i was curious how clean the clutch basket was.
What is the torque spec
What did you torque them too?
How'd you tell you needed new plates?
Thank you for this vid, having a completely loose clutch lever and wanted to know what all to watch out for, seeing that I've never done this before lol
Zuup broo.... Why does the last friction disk is off set with the others......
Its an anti vibration ring, basically a round spring. As you may have seen on this video if you have that ring and the one larger plate in the wrong order it work work correctly.
Hi 7:30 and 9:00 what setting on wrench ?
I was just gonna do the count down thing when you started ha!
Well done for finding what the problem was!
Spicy what camera are you using on the tripod
would you lose some of the accuracy of the torque wrench if your using all of those extension bars and adaptors?
Nope :)
I like to use the new gasket, trace it on the cardboard backing and put each bolt where it’s supposed to go to keep track of it. Marker easily comes off.
Gah, easily done Spicy. Don't beast yourself up about it!
Spicy the kinda guy that has a picture of himself as his homescreen

I would 100% take a look at them, I was going to say check adjustment but seems you have.

sounds like a gone exhaust gasket, or hole in the header pipe
what are torque specs for springs and cover
The service manual pdf is easy to find online. It is 3am here not sure myself atm haha
You got a new exhaust? ;)
What year drz400sm is that
07-08
Very helpful, thanks

thanks man
Good job, and you learned what not to do the next time. :]
did you soak the clutch plates in oil
+chris hutchins of course and in the next video I show that bit of fotage as so many people said that.
Was it just me that found the click of the torque socket strangely satisfying?
+Matt Woodhouse Oh it is lol
Funny. Good catch. Great video. Thx
This is great
Anyone who follows your twitter might be able to hazard a guess to source of that popping ;)
Good Video, nice to see people do a bit of maintenance on their own bike, hopefully it encourages others to give it a try.
Thanks for making this video to save me from doing the same thing
good video love the tittle 😁

Anybody who has done mechanical work has had a similar experience, I know I have.
someone needs to remix friction and steel
yeah, you gotta make sure you keep the same stack height I know it's not your fault that the plates were too big but I'm just saying for anyone else who has this problem.
+bchant19 wasn't the plates either! Lol
yeah, I jumped the gun a bit there lol but that can cause problems my dad done his clutch on a Kawasaki ninja zx9r and his kit was short 1 friction and 1 steel but the thickness was bigger. Have you checked the thickness off the old plates to see how far out of spec they are? Nice tip for the bolts by the way, though.
+bchant19 2.6 min they are 2.9 so had a little left but with the old springs just didn't cut it. 😀
yeah theres nothing worse than a sloppy clutch. So if you wanted to get the max ammount of life out of a drz clutch you could probably go to 30,000miles if you dont do any clutch up wheelies during that time lol.
I liked the video yay
+oi'lee handz 😁
thank you for this.
No problem 👍
you should start a humour series:
motorcycle mechanics by an ameteur
+Dominykas Ciunys that's half of UA-cam hahahaha
Lucky you don't need to take the clutch nut off everytime to get to the plates, because that is a pain if you mess up!
+nuttypigeon Oh trust me I'm thankful! 😂
At least you realised your mistake, and was easily sorted. Would of really sucked if you had to change the oil again
+Paul Ford yer, got there in the end. 😀
What ever you did to make the bang pops, LEAVE IT!!!! :D
You should've left the cover off! So it'll be cool, like a Ducati!
-signed, an idiot 😉
I know why it keeps popping!! You fed the bike too many baked beans again, didn't you? :p
Never knew bike clutches had so many friction plates
You want Rachel not Carol 😂👍
+Bjorn Norgaard I'm old school, well tbh when I last saw it it was her
leaking exhaust gasket causing your bike exhaust to pop, change them all the time on my TL1000R
Awesome! Thank you. Liked/sub'd.
those new cluch plates should sink in motor oil over night so they suck oil in they selves and reduce wear on first rides
+CoffeeMan they were.
good

+alistair tang... Yes I know, I have maintained my own bikes for 8 years. If your willing to change clutch plates odds are you will know how to adjust it. 🤗
spicy110 also adjust it properly because it can cause extreme pops and crackles through the exhaust. 😂
Thanks for making this mistake so i wont have to!!
What the fuck i actually learned something are you alright?
RAOTFL you know the old saying
I WENT TO SCHOOL
for something like that I'll go to a professional to do it as I'm to scared to do it myself
+wargaming Biker naa it's all easy lol well once you sort the order out
I may give it a go when I don't have warranty on my bike
Seems like Derek might be getting on a bit
+Zak S infact he's close to better than ever Drzs are work horses
Spicy, you said his better then ever. But it seems he ain't now the engine looks like it's messes up dude
long bolt, short hole... giggity
Oh Spicy your canny tick like
Easy when you know how ;)
Sounds like you've blown an exhaust seal...
Bolt came off from were the exhaust meets the header, he put a pic on twitter.
Ah ok thanks. I don't have the Twitter, but I do have a DRZ that makes the same sound when the exhaust goes :)
Mine does the popping to .. :P lol haha..
Great vid thanks... But you really need to clean up your work space.
It's a shared space, not my stuff sadly. It's far better these days but I still have a couple of engines in the way.
How much of a dipstick did you feel?
How many of us who aren't mechanics wouldn't have done the same thing?
Now you know for next time.
Never knew it was that easy to do.
Hey spicy how r u my friend
THE CROWS ARE BEHIND U ……..........
+Mean Guy worried...bow
+spicy110 now
can you ride that litle pit bike plz :)
+Noah Buckley naa it's in to be fixed and isn't ours. Plus pretty sure it fubar
spicy110 ok I just thought it'll be funny
1st - typo spicy - an not in bro
or is it a joke...?
the typo
spicy110 I see what you did their 😉
Might as well not even say what ft lbs you torque it to lol
.
So mechanics is not your strong point then . Also you need more carbon on your bike .
:)
not so idiot - using proper tools(torquewrench)
