    But there is a simple and cheap way to fix it. Even though there is an inexpensive way to fix this, it's a problem I think needs to be addressed highlighting the design flaws and quality of the product. With all that being said it is a great speed light and I would still recommend it and I'm still using it for my commercial work.

    hot shoes have always been designed as a give point to protect the flash body.

      I'd accept that if I hit off something, but it seems its own weight broke it

    Totally agree with this. I have the V1 and a Sony A7RIII. I feel the setup is now a bit too top heavy. The V1 is also loose on the camera, even with the locking mechanism tightened. Sometimes, it doesn't fire and I have to hold the V1 securely to the camera. It's got to a point where I don't fully trust it anymore and often default to using a cheap Godox flashgun.
    Will replacing the mount on the gun make it more secure - will it attach more tightly to the camera? I guess for @20, it may be worth trying.

    Not the same issue, but I snapped off a hotshoe on a Godox 860 vIII on fuji. (seems to be the same design as V1, since I used a V1 part to fix mine). I believe people have had more issues with the Sony version.
    My fault. I knocked the camera off a stool onto some carpet and it landed flash first and tore the base off it. I was seriously annoyed at first. Gaffa taped it back together to finish the job. Afterwards though, I thought that I was kind of glad for some sort of weak point at the base of the flash. Much less serious than a heavy knock damaging the hotshoe mount on my cameras.
    I now carry a spare godox hotshoe with me. So far I haven't needed it, despite often having a camera with flash fitted dangling on a harness.

    I am beginner in photography.
    I bought a used Sony A7s2.
    New 24-70 2.8 lens.
    How much power flash would be enough to shoot outdoors?
    I would want to take this flash with me easily and during travelling.
    Should I go for on camera flash or off camera flash
    This would be 1st flash that I would buy.
    What are your suggestions?

    Sorry to hear this experience for you Mark..but at the same time everyone "complaining" about the "quality"..is understandable..it just seems like a bunch of "user error"..I have had mine for 2 years now and it is a Sony version..and there is nothing wrong with it or has "broken" at the hot shoe point of the mount...I can see if people drop it or when its attached an outside force makes contact with it and then it happens to get damaged or break..but just putting it back on and off there is shouldn't be an "issue" people are just careless with their stuff..just take it off and on slowly thats all you need to do.haha even your example Mark...to be damaged just putting it on?..couldn't have come from putting it on and off from the camera?..it takes a lot of force for that part to just snap of when it is attached on the camera..did you damage it from the last time you used it?..

    • @MarkDuffyPhotography
      @MarkDuffyPhotography  7 місяців тому

      I'd accept user error but this broke from me mounting it to camera. I've owned Canon and Fuji in the past and never had the issues I have with Sony with mounting to hotshoe. But this broke due to it being top heavy

    I kind of like the modular design so that you can replace the foot so easily. Even though I suspect it means they knew it's a weak point. What would be really cool is if the foot is interchangeable between systems. So if you switched from Sony to Canon for example, you could change the foot on you speedlight rather than sell and replace.

    • @MarkDuffyPhotography
      @MarkDuffyPhotography  7 місяців тому +1

      I like that too but at the cost of it breaking so easily though?

    • @MarkDuffyPhotography
      @MarkDuffyPhotography  7 місяців тому +1

      And it is a pity that it doesn't just change from camera to camera but then that's sales they'd be missing out on

      @MarkDuffyPhotography I once fumbled a 7D with a cheap speed light attached and managed to bounce it off a desk..... it tore the hotshoe off the camera....kinda wish that speedlight had broken so easily 🙈

    • @josephwright1986

      The shoe is replaceable on prior designs too. The hot shoe is generally the weak point on any flash. Ive had more expensive lights broken in a similar way.

    • @MarkDuffyPhotography
      @MarkDuffyPhotography  7 місяців тому +1

      @gerrycanning184 I suppose that was a relief that's all that broke in that case. (Also how many times I say "that" in a sentence 🤣)

    I religiously do not keep flashes on my hot shoe anymore working with Sony Cameras. Even the parts on the Sony HVL Flashes break eventually. Those are $120+ to repair... I opt for the much lighter and thus harder to break radio triggers. Not always ideal to hold a flash in hand, but if I have a belt system to hold my flash and use it when I need it, it's great. Lightens up my camera a lot. I don't know why cameras haven't come up with a better system to attach flashes to cameras. It's been a weak point for as long as on camera flashes came around.

    • @MarkDuffyPhotography
      @MarkDuffyPhotography  7 місяців тому

      This had crossed my mind and like a gimbal handle on camera to hold camera and flash. Paired with a rotating plate you could switch between landscape and portrait easily and flash stays in the same place

    • @RedrumVideoProductns
      @RedrumVideoProductns 7 місяців тому

      @@MarkDuffyPhotography I used to use my Canon flashes on a flash cable system that had a cold shoe mount glued to the top of the camera connected side for when I wanted to have another hand free and it allowed radio multi flash triggering without issue. That system worked so well and lasted 5 years, until I switched to Sony. Solid Hot shoes on those Canons! Sony has no full-function 1st party cable option, but I wouldn't do that even if they did, because the weakness of their hot shoe.

      They will still fire from the remote trigger (from experience) without the shoe. Keep a X2T or Xpro in your kit as a backup solution.@@MarkDuffyPhotography
      I dont frequently do a lot of flash work mounted on the camera, but I do use them as sacrificial lights when im working with kids. Ive only had one break on me and it was because a kid knocked it over, but it broke the exact same way. Keep your wireless trigger in the bag and as long as it was the hot shoe that broke, you can still use it.
      (imagine that breaking on a way more expensive light though, and it not being an easily replaceable part)
