    I hope Godox doesn't listen to you about the shoe mount wheel. I really like the "fixing buckle" with button. Quick, easy, and I can see if it's in the lock or release position easily, and know which way to move it for the other state. Love it. Please don't revert back Godox!!

    I had a really cheap flash that was issued to me when I worked for a studio one summer. I thought it was simple and powerful, but watching this I realized I have so much more to learn about flash

    Picked up the V1 (now have a couple other Godox's) and their interface confuses the heck out of me. I rarely - very rarely - use a flash so it's back to the manual to noodle things out. My intuition and Godox's are not on the same planet. I learned to use their remote triggers with a simpler interface, get the flashes to listen to those and life is much better. The older Wescott interface would suit me fairly well I think. Looks simple enough I wouldn't have to spend a bunch of time with the manual. But I fear if I had to use it a lot it would lead to hair loss.

    • @ogonzilla
      @ogonzilla  6 місяців тому +1

      That's funny. I found the V1 simpler. 😂

    • @kmahsan
      @kmahsan 6 місяців тому +2

      ditto. Without seeing other youtube videos/manual I couldn't figure out the functionalities. The interface is not intuitive. Since I am not a professional and use flashes only occassionaly I can't usually remember what I learned 😐 before. This gives me big headache. I guess using intuitive UI in phones have raised our expectations and these units do not live up to that.

    I love my V1, yes the wheel is a bit flimsy, but it's the only speedlight I have, and I don't hit wrong buttons. I think the locking system is super, it has never let me down, and does not get stuck like a conventional lock.

    • @ogonzilla
      @ogonzilla  6 місяців тому +1

      Great flash. I found its thermal protection a bit too conservative at events. It would slow down/shutdown. Has this happened to you?

    • @kennethnielsen3864
      @kennethnielsen3864 6 місяців тому

      HORROR!!! No that has never happened to me, maybe yours had/have an older firmware, I usually take home 6-800 shots from an event, using the flash only for subject/model lighting, and set the camera to expose for the background, like you describe in an older video, works perfect for me.

    Wow. Really helpful video! Regarding the FJ80-SE, I note that its color temperature is listed as 6500K vs. 5500K for the FJ80 II (from the specs on Westcott's website). I'm curious whether you've noticed any sort of blue cast or a cooler tone vs., say, your Godox V1 when processing your files. Thanks, Omar!

    Interesting video, Omar, although I hardly ever use multiple flashes while out shooting an event. I find that leaving the flash in TTL mode (Nikon SB800 on a Z6II) and making adjustments to my camera settings is a much faster way to work.

    I need to learn this shiiii..tuff. Switched from Canon to Nikon Z, and now gotta start over. So, with Nikon, what do you recommend starting with? Thom Hogan mentions Nikon Zs are getting increasingly picky/finicky about which flash units will work. I want to be able to put a trigger on the camera and move the flash off to the side. Thanks!

    Hi Omar- what are you finding works best on the Zf? Anything different than your recommendations here?
    I was using a Phottix Mitros+ on my D750 and finding that it doesn't operate in TTL in the hotshoe on the ZF, so I guess I'm flash shopping.

    If you have to recommend the Godox V1 or the Westcott FJ80-SE as a first flash for a beginner, using it mainly for kids and family portraits, which one will you recommend? I’m getting crazy trying to decide between the Godox V350 at $160 versus the V1 or the FJ80-SE at $200. I like the size of the 350, but for $40, I think I can get a flash with room to grow over time. Thanks for the great videos and the entertaining channel.

  • @jmh1512
    @jmh1512 4 місяці тому

    Hola Omar. Thanks a lot for your time explaining the operation of these flashes, it is very useful for me..
    I've been a long time Godox user and have several Godox flashes, but I'm not 'married' to any brand (I switched to Nikon 2 years ago).
    I'm curious to Westcott because it seems to have better color than Godox (K temperature and quality). I'm not sure if TTL is more precise too (I use a Nikon Z6 II and my V1 TTL is not too consistent). I know that you don't use TTL a lot, but have you had a chance to compare Godox and Westcott TTL?
    I have invested a lot in Godox but I might consider switching to Westcott. The FJ80 SE is tempting as it is priced right, and I'm thinking of getting it to try out the Westcott world.
    The interface of this flash is more agile than that of its big brother, although I still think that the Godox one is even better, since it allows direct access to 3 groups (you don't need more) without the need to use the wheel to select.
    In my case what I value most is being able to turn groups on and off quickly.
    BTW, could you confirm if the Westcott assist beam works with the Z6II ? Thanks a lot.
    Best regards and keep up the good work!

    Do you prefer the round flashes over the rectangular flashes like the godox V1 over the godox 8xx i have been thinking of buying one but could really decide. I was thinking the round flashes will have more issues with softbox support and the like since the size is a big change from flash standards?

    I have the X2-T Godox controller. It’s not intuitive to me “yet.” I recognized many of the same foibles you experienced on those various speedlites.
    I can get it to work and control 2 lights but I find it cumbersome so far, and bizarrely if the LCD backlight turns off it won’t fire the lights despite not being asleep. Only tapping a button wakes it up and I can find no “sleep” timeout.
    The issue with all of these is that they do too much, and so it’s way too easy to get crossed up in the sequence of buttons.
    Modern cameras can often control a controller and might represent a better interface … so long as you can instantly access THAT menu while shooting.

    I wonder if these work with the Westcott works with the Nikon F6? I have Godox lights right now and find they don't work with my F6 and are unreliable with my Z8. Looking to get something higher quality that works with both.

    With the recent release of the mirrorless cameras , a lot of the triggers do not function on TTL and HSS modes, example the pocket wizard does not work on the Nikon Z series of cameras. Does the speedlites work on TTL & HSS on the Nikon Z series? I have a whole bunch of pocket wizards triggers and nikon speedlites and planning to move to the Z series.

    I wonder what the point is of hitting the TEST button on the flash when you are changing the power output. You aren't taking a picture (you can judge on the screen) and I assume you can't judge the output by the flash going of.I also assume you do this so you can determine if you need to change the power more, but I'm not sure about that. If you need to hit the button to communicate the new settings to the other flashes, there is no need to adjust more after that.

    • @ogonzilla
      @ogonzilla  6 місяців тому

    A curious note: The FJ80 SE is listed as having a color temp of 6500k, while ALL of their other lights are +/- 5500k. Seems they include a gel and magnetic ring “for 5500k environments.” I guess that’s something, but also one more thing to remember in the field. Have you had much trouble getting color temps to match between light sources?

    • @hramirezgcr
      @hramirezgcr 5 місяців тому

      Strange, why to use 6500k and not the 5500k? Do you consider this a big drawback? I’m considering getting this Flash because it is almost the same price as the V1, but I’m unsure if it is the Flash I want, and now you add a new variable.

    I really got disgusted with the V1, not only because of the flimsy wheel but also the awful recycle speed. What I do now is use the AD200 with a wired attachment that goes on the hotshoe, and a separate godox transmitter controls all flashes. Although more cumbersome physically I find this setup is functionally more reliable, easier to switch groups, and the AD200 had faster recycling. Also more powerful than a standard flash.

    I don't like the flash interfaces at all they all stink godox is slight better than the rest.. I don't like touch screens they are not tactile.. I like the flash triggers. I like the flashpoint triggers best (though not perfect) because it has so many dedicated buttons, I can choose not look at the trigger and just make changes by touch without looking. I like dedicated buttons for groups so when I hit A whether I am in the dedicated A screen or the group screen, I go to A and when I turn the dial, it changes power. Soft buttons that change to different screens make things harder to learn... hate them. I like parametric programing when I cannot have dedicated buttons. I have buttons that surround the display screen with a description of what the button does in the display next to that button So when I select that button it goes to another screen which the buttons line up with a parameter I can adjust. This is the next best thing to dedicated buttons when you don't have enough real-estate to have a button for every parameter.. This is not rocket science. The people that make these interfaces are not photographers that shoot with flash. If they were, interfaces would be much better.
