Bob Dylan going electric. Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Michael Jackson’s Moonwalk. Queen at Live Aid. Elvis Presley singing Hound Dog and gyrating his hips. Beethoven debuting his 9th Symphony. Nirvana on MTV Unplugged. All of these are influential moments in music history. Without moments like the Sugarhill Gang reaching the Top 40, we never would have had rappers like Kendrick Lamar or the Notorious B.I.G. Without Madonna performing Like a Virgin on the MTV Awards, we never would have had Britney Spears singing Baby One More Time. Music legends like Johnny Cash, The Who, Freddie Mercury and more mad moments that shaped music history, and changed modern music forever. WatchMojo is picking the most important moments in music history; check it out to see if your favorite music moments made the list!

Beethoven’s 9th is something that is written in history books in multiple countries. So that should be the top. I love classic rock but seriously you going to put Beethoven below Cash, Hendrix, and Nirvana??????
Jonathan Bennett there has been some recent evidence that he might have invented a bone conduction speaker so he could 'feel' the music while composing. That symphony is amazing!!

Beethoven: Shit I can't hear.
Also Beethoven: Hold my beer.
True.
No Mozart?

Rappers Eminem is too afraid to diss
how about Bach?
A guy writes an entire orchestrated symphony while DEAF and it's #9 on the list..... Okay.
poetnk pop culture for you
Which I do agree with you it should have been #2, but when it comes to the Beatles, they will always be #1
Tommye Bunn Yes they will always be #1
Tommye Bunn Why? How are the Beatles more important than say J.S. Bach, who literally solidified tonal harmony in the history of Western music? This tonal system that Bach advanced and perfected is what almost all pop music is based on, including the Beatles. Without Bach, it’s doubtful if the Beatles could have ever created their music. What have the Beatles in comparison ever advanced in music theory? I know you may love the Beatles but that is no grounds for evaluating their musical importance.
That's the thing about pop music. It's music for the masses. I am actually impressed that Beethoven made it on the list at all. Remember that the final movement of the 6th was based on a pop song. Don't fret. Just let us elites or sophisticates , or whatever you want to call us keep LVB to ourselves. Cheers.
Imagine watching The Beatles that day in person.
Are you trying to make us sad
Wasn't their breakthrough, just their arrival in the US. Doesn't compare to the importance of their breakthrough concert back in England, nor to most of the never-filmed events that Watchmojo can't show, like the invention of the modern musical scale in Bach's lifetime, the first independent music star in western culture (maybe Mozart) or the invention of the guitar.
Right how cute where they!!!!
Imagine being at MTV unplugged with nirvana
@@tylerthecreator8573 you typed that as I’m listening to “the man who sold the world”
Beethoven should be higher, most everyone was literally too afraid to write a symphony after that for a long time
John Kiunke ahh I see you have Mozart in your pfp from Amadeus.
And he was deaf

Beethoven literally composed the parts of 20+ instruments to work together in one piece that’s still today considered the greatest piece of musical Melody in history, WHILE HE WAS DEAF!!! Most people can’t even rhyme
EidanMA most of Beethoven’s greatest songs/compositions where before 1801 where he still had %40 of his hearing and was age 31. It wasn’t until 1816 he was completely deaf and age 46. People have a misconception of him and believe he was deaf from a child, he was 26 when he started loosing his hearing.
What he DEAF no way?
@@faronwatts4048, you're right about when he actually went deaf, but the ninth composed between 1822 and 1824, when he was deaf.
Jesse Watts I was referring directly to the 9th which was composed after he was fully deaf; however, I do appreciate the extra information tho
EidanMA he was a true music genius

Marty McFly not to be dramatic or anything, but I love you.
Marty McFly yea my grandmother almost was arrested for towing us behind the car on skateboards in Gettysburg national park, great influence lol

“Ladies and gentlemen, I give you….The Beatles!” Most significant phrase in music history. 60 years later, they’re still loved, their music is still played and they’re bring rediscovered by new listeners. Who will know most of these others in 10 years, let alone 60?
Queen at Live Aid, was called "The greatest rock performance of the 20th century", and it was. i was there. It was untouchable.

For me, Paul Simon's 1987 Graceland concert in Zimbabwe is a supreme moment in music history. Mesmerizing and inspiring.
Hendrix doing the National Anthem, using the intricate sounds of his guitar to express and capture the pain and anguish of the war and what was going on in America, is one of the most beautiful and important moments ever. Gives me chills.

I absolutely love that Nirvana Unplugged was ahead of Beethoven’s 9th. For real though, that unplugged album changed my life, it was filmed on my 10th Birthday, and I play that album still to this day. Best acoustic album of all time
Bro first of all, november 18th. We have the same birthday. But from a nirvana super fan to another, do you really think it should be above beethoven orchestrating a whole symphony deaf?
Come on, Beethoven wrote the 9th all in his head.
The man was deaf at the time but knew exactly what each and every note would sound like. And he wrote it for a full orchestra at that. If that doesn't grant you number one of ALL TIME, then there is no sense in even doing these lists. Not to mention that it is awesome to boot.
I will grant you the Queen and Freddie spots. And the Beetles did change the face of rock.
And Hendricks? The MASTER OF THE STRATOCASTER.
Elvis? Well hell son. He kicked in the door and all the rest followed.
Tough to argue against that my friend.
Good point. I agree with your Beethoven comment. Everything else is subjective to each individual. It's like the saying, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." I'm sure my tastes are different from yours but we can agree that it moves us powerfully. And that's why influence is seen in so many artists, songs, dance moves, and endless compositions.
The only problem of the 9th is that it is hell to sing... Waay to high for comfort...
Lol just because Elvis popularized something doesnt mean he started it. Rock N Roll started in black communities, evolving from guitar heavy blues. Elvis and the Beatles did not start it.

Good to see Johnny cash he's rarely mentioned nowadays
Cash is probably a piece of american history and/or culture. Nevertheless this amazing artist I discovered lately is fairly unknown and somehow no that important in "music history" as mentioned. Queen is all anybody has to say about Rock History! Queen Was/Is Rock History!
Woooo
@Freddie Mercury tbh I love queen and even though I'm more of a Beatles guy, I think the Fab four deserved the #1 spot
Where The Doors at? You forget about JIM MORRISON being arrested mid-concert! Revolutionary moment without question!
You'd have to choose which concert he was arrested
straight up, i fucking love the doors!
The Doors come up less & less over time. Are they...dated??
@@behelith lol
Agree. Not enough slots for all history of the greatest musical genious of all time there are too many
Beethoven: *composes one of if not the the greatest symphonic orchestras ever*
WatchMojo: “KURT COBAIN ON MTV IS MORE IMPORTANT”
Yeah when Beethoven dropped that shit I was so hype
All people complaining about ranking, but no one says that Beethoven should be #1?! I see that we all did not experience that live, but honestly, from the skillset it is on a completely different level.
But that doesn't really give us the strong feelings or memories when we hear queens or pink floyd. When we hear nirvana for example, we think of our rebel teenage years, so do our parents and so does everyone. The music simply is more appealing to most of us because it makes us emotional. You don't listen to Beethoven when you have a sing along with your friend or sm.
@@lanac5793 That is not what the list is about, though. It's about the most important moments in music. Beethoven should be #1. I mean, damn, the man was DEAF! Could any of these musicians have composed something comparable to Beethoven's 9th? With their ears intact? Don't think so. And Beethoven was DEAF. What he accomplished was nothing short of miraculous.
Buddy Holley and the Cricket's performance at the Apollo Theater in Harlem should be in there, too. That was much more important than MJ's moonwalk or The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. I mean, seriously. 3 white boys from Texas playing to a black audience in Harlem! The first white band to play the Apollo...and they weren't received well the first two days, and were booed Then the decided to play Bo Diddley, and brought down the house. They bridged the gap and ushered in rock and roll. The bands that came after, including The Beatles and Queen, admit if it weren't for Buddy Holley and the Crickets, they might never have heard them at all.
Agreed
I'm with you on that one. I was so pleased to see it even there! My standard answer to "what would you do with a time machine?" is to have been there for that performance. Imagine how thrilled the crowd was: they knew his work, but they had NEVER heard that symphony before!! I think the list is respectable, regardless of order, in "important first moments" at least on a large scale. Hearing Edith Piaf singing La Vie En Rose at the close of WWII would have been astounding for example. Or Mood Indigo at the Cotton Club. Live Aid sure was something, not just Queen. Depends on your age, and taste I guess, but for me it all starts and ends with Ludwig......
I’d genuinely say that Woodstock and live aid was more important. I’m fully aware of the technical impact Beethoven’s 9th had but I honestly think that Hendrix and Freddie made greater changers to the world as we see it, both musically and socially.
I cannot argue against the choice for each particular moment, but throwing Beethoven's presentation of his 9th symphony is not only out of place for this countdown (this should be regarding pop culture music, or music in the 20th century) but disrespectful as the composer's of the "classical" (in this case romantic) pieces have transcended time with their music being performed centuries later as to be in a list that compares music that had particular impacts only in pop culture.
1. Live Aid
2. Micheal Jackson Moonwalk
3. Hendrix Star Spangled Banner
4. Johnny Cash Prison
5. Nirvana Unplugged
6. The Beatles Live
7. Rod Stewart 3.5 million concert attendance
8. Hendrix Stops playing to support Cream
9. Elvis performs live TV
10. Slipknot 2009 Jump The F Up
Remember when teem girls screamed for bands like The Beatles instead of Justin Bieber? Good times...
I think it was Beatlemania when people were crazy about them
I got chills the first time I watch Queen`s perfomance in live Aid
Fabian Teran it is perfection. Thank god they captured it on quality film too so we can enjoy it again and again!
I still do.
I was their two as an 8 old it was my first ever concert i will never forget it and they for got to show love of my life and is this the world we created.i never saw the crowd cry with happiness when he played.
Queen made all the other acts look like amateur night contestants at an oap's home.
Right on! And the other acts knew their place. They cried how do we follow that!
There has never been, nor there will ever be a more important time in history than when the Ed Sullivan show introduced America to the Fab Four, because The Beatles changed the ENTIRE WORLD, not just America. Their influence from that night of Feb 9, 1963 to the present day is still being felt.
Genuine question, how did the world change?
@@abdullahbhinder9023 Hard to say how different the world would be had that event never happened but it definitely changed the world of music forever. It's not an overstatement to say an entire generation of future musicians were inspired to pick up an instrument and dedicate their lives to music after seeing the Beatles on the tube that day--many of them young boys inspired by the enthusiastic female reaction in the crowd no doubt.
Trust NoOne yes true
Abdullah Bhinder Queen was inspired by the Beatles
Marc Cruickshank Nah dude..
i bet Bono and a few others regret the day they shared the stage with Freddie, none of then commanded the stage as he did, he showed them how it was done.
Beethoven actually didnt just use intuition to compose while deaf, you can feel music and each note has it's own vibration. He felt the music and notes. If you're musically inclined you can recognise notes just by sound alone and if you play a instrument you'll be able to tell without hearing when that instrument makes a note, I play violin and can feel the music through the instrument and sometimes you can tell a note is slightly off note just by sound but by the feeling of it.
People who go crazy that some people who watch the bohemian rhapsody movie aren’t “OG” but at least they now have a good taste of music
Ikr know they have expanded their music to something with substance rather than songs about substances
As a remaining people who at least made it to listen to these work of arts of music who changed the world , i think it is our responsibility to pass this down to our grandchildrens that this is how music evolved and it revolutionized the music industry so that to whatever centuries they may have already lived they know the origins of the music they have already listening to it.
And hope this comment may last to hundreds of years from now.
