I find the "autotune" comments funny---I saw him live 4 times and just amazing---his vocals were beyond anything in today's "music"--and Brian, Roger and John made NO musical mistakes live. Look at any live performance--from the beginning in the '70's--all 4 pure magic!!
Edgar Pewds my friend told me the other day that all of queen’s songs were autotuned just to get me pissed off😂😂 because I hate new music with all the autotune and he loves modern music and I love queen obviously
I saw Queen in 1985 during The Works tour and Freddie was a seamless performer. I can't think of any other front man like him. He was awesome right up to the last song. Possibly the only other to do this is David Bowie. If Bowie is the Starman Freddie is the Galaxy that has many thousands of stars within. Musicsally Freddie is a supernova, explosive, colourful and wonderful.
My father is a rock singer. has been for 40 years. He thinks Freddie Mercury is the best singer of all time, even thought he isn't his favorite singer.
Opera singers are my benchmark. If Montserrat Caballé said Freddy's coloring and nuance was impressive - that's good enough to tell me he was the best rock singer ever.
Sorry, that was Montserrat playing politics. Freddie was NOT a great singer. He was good at making the best of the limited range he had, and compensated by being a charismatic showman. That does not equate to being a great vocalist.
@@LaughingStock_ Better get your ears cleaned out, buddy! But, you're right, Freddie was not a great singer, he WAS THE BEST to ever have graced the Earth!!!!!! That's all.....
I just saw Bohemian Rapsody! My kids took me for my birthday. I was 23 when I saw them on TV for Live Aid and I found the movie to be great - memories came back becaused I followed Queen since I was a teenager. It was a wonderful tribute to Freddie and his voice and performances. He was truly great.
I'm 58, and saw them on the "A Night At The Opera" tour in 1976. Saw the film tonight, and have to say, I was very moved. A beautiful spirit, and we were all blessed to witness and share in that talent. We are all just on this planet a very short time. God bless.
Vocally, Freddy Mercury was to vocals what Jimi Hendrix was to guitars. Arguably, nobody will probably ever be able to match the versatility of his vocal range.
Tim Buckley, Barbra Streisand - there's two considerably above Freddie. I'm a fan, but don't let the great songs, charisma and showmanship cloud the fact that Freddie was a bloody good singer - but not "great".
His voice was absolutely amazing, but his popularity was also due to his ability to entertain an audience. When you paid to see Queen play, you saw a man giving everything he had, at every show. He never held back and he sang every song with the power and enthusiasm it deserved.
I remember watching Live Aid when I was 10 years old. Little did I know at the time that I was witnessing rock history. Queen's performance was nothing short of amazing, especially during Radio GaGa.
digipimp75 me too! I was 10 and was bewildered. I remember watching Freddie singing on the stage. Man, real music is dead now. Nothing can compare to that era of music
I've not met a single person who doesn't like Queen. They were and still are the greatest rock group ever in the history of the world. I never got to see them in concert and I regret it.
When I mentioned /en passant/ to my daughter that I'd seen Queen live in 1976 I earned her neverending envy. Being an old fart today comes with its perks...
@@JCapria Chuck Berry was the true King of Rock, TRUTH! Elvis was overrated and didn't write any of his songs or music... he sent teen girls into heat, that was what sold him...
True story: When Queen started making real money, Freddy’s manager suggested that he take some of that money and get his teeth straightened. Freddy refused, because he was afraid that it might affect his voice.
For real. He had 4 extra molars, and he thought that having them removed to make room for the other teeth would have changed the resonance of his voice. It's very possible it would have done.
Here's the thing about Freddie. The man had some serious pipes. He had a 4 octave range and he excelled in any octave. He wrote brilliant songs. And his stage presence was only matched by Adolf Hitler. Seriously, watch them play Radio Gaga at Live Aid and then watch a video of the Nuremburg rallies. We had better thank our lucky stars Freddie didn't go into politics or he would have taken over the world. But Queen as a whole had a brilliant dynamic. It wasn't just the Freddie Mercury backup band. They all made huge creative contributions to what made Queen what it is. Yes, Freddie wrore Somebody to Love, Killer Queen, and Bohemian Rhapsody, but Brian May wrote We Will Rock You, Save Me, and Fat Bottom Girls, John Deacon wrote I Want to Break Free, Another One Bites the Dust, and You're my Best Friend, and Roger Taylor wrote Radio Gaga and It's a Kind of Magic. Other bands like Nirvana for instance were not like that. Nirvana was basically just the Kurt Cobain backup band. Queen was this perfect storm of legendary talent, and Freddie was the face of it all, the delicious cherry on top of an already delicious sundae. He was the ambassador that allowed the amazing talent of combo that was Queen to be brought into our lives. He was the prism that focused the lazer beams from the brains of Roger, Brian, and John, and amplified them until they were powerful enough to blow our minds out through our ear holes. Yes, he was the most incredible front man who ever lived, hands down.
Mr. Palyre also funny thing is with almost all their songs, they were done by one person (or at least they didn't work with Freddie) because they hated each others music styles in a way. Freddie said he only worked with May on one song and that was out of necessity. It's amazing they were all that great.
Freddy Mercury didn't just have the greatest voice in "rock" history, that man had the greatest voice ever gifted to any human being in the history of mankind. Fortunately for we the fans, he knew exactly what to do with it. He was a fkng God on stage. His performances were absolutely legendary and his band did just as well.

I saw Freddie and the guys from Queen just as they were breaking...I saw them in Brisbane, Australia in 1976 just as they arrived from Japan ( I still have the tickets stub's in my photo album) and their Bohemian Rhapsody/Night at the Opera/ WAS exploding onto the world markets. A small 5,000 seat studio setting, (previously a wrestling auditorium) my friends and I were like 50 feet from Freddie and the guys., all glammed up, Harlequin outfits and all......we stood on our metal chairs and cheered the night away...they were great....FANTASTIC IN FACT!!.....we realised even then in that early time,...we were in the presence of greatness...and we never, never, lost that admiration for decades since. In fact the 4 friends I went to that amazing concert with all those decades ago are still alive,!!... and NOW...in our 60+ yrs we are STILL QUEEN FANS!. Freddie Forever!
@@raquelcoria7730 yep I thank my lucky stars I was alive during those amazing times! NOT before Live Aid in 1985 as depicted in the movie) but the movie itself is a real winner!
It just raises and lowers pitches that are off. If the pitch is too far off the voice will sound almost like a robot which is why a lot of rappers sound the way they do.
Probably already mentioned in the comments here, but two things that make Freddie stand out even more. On the topic of his vibrato, the point with Freddie was not that he could have a faster vibrato than most singers, the truly scary part is that Freddie can overdub him self multiple times and have all his vibrato's line up exactly. Bohemian Rhapsody is the best example of that. All these overdubs are spot on and that's truly remarkable. And checking the back catalog of Queen sure makes one appreciate his voice, but to really appreciate it, just watch Queens live performances.
Freddie was the bomb. His stage and vocal performances were like no other. He deserves all the love of his family and we his fans. All the members of Queen deserve to be admired
Ya it's his clear voice and tones within that range that won me. It's not a big deal to have a vocal range like that, but it is a big deal to sound good with a vocal range like that. When you can sing high notes with such clarity. At no point in the Queen songs I'm familiar with does his voice sound like it has any strain or any effort in it at all (singing that well and having it seem effortless is amazing!).
Some prefer others as the greatest rock singer, but for me Freddie is easily the greatest. Combined with his showmanship on stage he is the ultimate rock performer, and the standard any other should be judged by. Live aid in 85 showed the world what happens when a great band, with great musicians and the greatest front man of all time hit the stage.

Live Aid Queen was, in my opinion, appalling pantomime - a million years from Queen's peak of 74-77. At Wembley it was abundantly clear Freddie knew the game was up and they were long gone and no amount oh tacky "Daaaaaay-ohs" could disguise that fact.
I sometimes get a little misty eyed hearing "Nothing really matters to me..." along with "Anyway the wind blows". That whole song is a musical journey, filled with nuance, theatrics, great instrumentation and so many vocal overdubs. What an amazing talent. I loved his interviews too how he could at one moment be over the top and then go the opposite end of the spectrum. Hell, even his INTERVIEWS were theatrical...😁❤️
I think there's only a few other Musicians who have a amazing voice like freddy. Vitaliy Vladasovich Grachyov, (also known as vitas) and George Michael.
@@lessalazar9068 i think Georges Michel was the only one when i heard him singing for Freddie's tribute in the 90ies for whom i thought : woooaaw, this one is the only one able to reach Freddie's level with his voice !! @@cooIguy Freddie was well aware that his buck teeth would improve his appearance [although i think he was sleek, handsome, and what buck teeth? He would have looked gorgeous with no teeth. Freddie was, and remains, the greatest vocalist of all-time. Erin E. Fortin I disagree with "greatest vocalist". Greatest Frontman or musician? That is something I can get behind, but his raw technique wasn't good enough for me personally to consider him the best Singer of all time. It was his Ability to write well-written, catchy, and unique music, His showmanship, and his unique voice that gave him a lasting effect on humanity. In terms of technique, someone like Pavarotti easily beats him. Pavarotti, however, never had the power to entertain an audience like Freddie Mercury could.
Thank you for using the footage from the 1981 Montreal concert, best Queen live performance I've seen! You can really get a true and close experience with Freddie live by watching that concert. It was all filmed with 35mm, so it's available in HD.
Damn straight it's the best. Somebody to love goes right through you & is his best rendition ever. That intro OMG.I must have watched it 25 or 30 times the past 5 years alone. Queen Live Killers is another one. The band call it one of their worst mixes, they did it themselves. BUT..this album sounds as if you are there. It actually captures the real voices and real musicianship. I always preferred the concert albums.

My love for Freddie Mercury has no bounds - but he didn't even have the biggest vocal range in Queen. Drummer Roger Taylor's range spanned four octaves (E2-E6) - a full half octave more than Mercury's. Roger also sang some of the truly great Queen songs like "Modern Time Rock n Roll" and "Stone Cold Crazy". Queen is the only band in history in which all four members each penned at least one number one hit. Lots of talent beyond Freddie.
That is true........Roger Taylor was a good singer....where did you read that his range was that good!! If so why hasn't anyone ever mentioned this....the entire group did write many of these hits Freddy just sang them must have been there choice for him to sing them...😎
True, Roger helped Freddie A LOT during their live performances, and his high pitched screams are scattered throughout all of Queen's discography. But his voice was a little less textured than Freddie's one (so maybe a little less versatile). It was a nice (and powerful!) raspy rock voice, whereas Freddie's timbre was multi-faceted. Brian May also got a nice voice, more mellow and gentle.
Matt Knight sorry, but yellow subamarine(ringo starr) and something( george harrison) plus all of john and pauls #1 hits. The beatles did it first. No offense.
misa smith : I think David Calderon is absolutely correct. All the Beatles had hits first , but definitely did not have the vocal range of QUEEN !!!!!!
And to think that Bohemian Rhapsody is a very emotional song even though Freddie Mercury said the song had no meaning behind it, and that it was just a song of things that sounded good together.
He actually said he'd never let anyone know what the meaning of that song is. He wants it to mean whatever the listener wants it to mean. He said the meaning is for the listener to decide.
@@emmakennedy104 And as it should be, someone drew up a good idea of it, that it was a song of becoming who he was, but whether it was or not, it's for the listener as you said :) if we knew exactly what it was about, the magic of that song wouldn't be the same, it'd still be there, its queen lol, but so many songs today never grip you or make you emotional and give you that tie to the artist, as we know what exactly they were about so we can't indulge and enjoy the music. Freddie was different. and we each have our own inner demons, loves etc that tie us to that song. which is why it will always be considered the greatest musical piece of all time. and why every year in the rock chats, it gets number 1. because it is and always will be :)
For me the emotional layer and -pallet gives room to my own interpretation. When I read the lyrics when keeping in mind that Freddie is coming to terms with his sexual orientation, everything makes sense, even the ‘nonsensical’ opera part. All the figures mentioned (Scaramouche, Galileo and Figaro) paint the struggle between keeping on the mask and renouncing the truth (about his nature) - depicted by Scaramouche and Galileo- and be his magnificent self (the enfant terrible Figaro).
Possibly the greatest male vocalist in recorded history. There have been better single pitch singers, but no one with the range Mercury had that I am aware of. I was truly lucky to see Freddie perform at Knebworth in 1986, he's last live concert with Queen before his death. While that voice was amazing, his ability to work an audience was equally as impressive, he really was the ultimate showman. As you get older, it's often easy to look back and think things were better when you were younger. I think when Freddie Mercury was out there banging out songs though, they really were. Nobody has done it better since :-)
Freddie had more talent in his little toe than most of these so called pop stars of today. He was the master from which all performers should be made to watch before going out there to entertain us. We badly need him back. Today's charts are shit and no-one is good enough live to do the job. Even date grohl says that Freddie is "the dude"! Freddie Mercury in full flow was just mind-blowing, he was simply the perfect showman. He was sent from the gods! It was just absolutely, spell-bindingly brilliant
Range is not a big deal actually as most singers have a pretty much comparable range. What matters is how they use it. I can hit a A6 at my highest note and a low note of B1 but it sounds like shit and has no musicality to it. Freddie had control over his vocal range and the emotional depth to manipulate it in the way that he did.
Most beautiful n greatest thing of falling in love of freddie voice is his clearity of lyrics and range of his voice that makes him the greatest singer forever, that all experienced.
This is by far one of the best channels on youtube right now, thanks so much Polyphonic. Ever since I've heard Freddie go high on Under Pressure I've been fascinated by his vocal abilities, truly inhuman.

Opera singers are my benchmark. If Montserrat Caballé said Freddy's coloring and nuance was impressive - that's good enough to tell me he was the best rock singer ever.
The best of all time
Sorry, that was Montserrat playing politics. Freddie was NOT a great singer. He was good at making the best of the limited range he had, and compensated by being a charismatic showman. That does not equate to being a great vocalist.

His voice and his personality is why we can never get a performer like him ever again.

True story: When Queen started making real money, Freddy’s manager suggested that he take some of that money and get his teeth straightened. Freddy refused, because he was afraid that it might affect his voice.
William J. what!? fo real?
For real. He had 4 extra molars, and he thought that having them removed to make room for the other teeth would have changed the resonance of his voice. It's very possible it would have done.
Yes, it would have -- read somewhere a while back that several specialists confirmed that. Same reason Barbra Streisand never had her nose done.
His teeth are part of what makes him Freddy.....he looks great as is.........er, was 😖
I heard that Billy Joel refused to get his nose fixed (he broke it sometime earlier) for the same reason.
Mr. Palyre
Well written!
Holy cow, do you write articles, can I read them somewhere?
Freddie Mercury and Adolf Hitler? That's a first. XD

Actually, Queen Official is the best.
Rose Blake He is correct. All four wrote hits.

Brandon Callahan He said there was no implicit meaning to it, that you make up the meaning yourself, not that it wasn’t emotionally motivated.
@BradHeas he died in 7u
many people have a bigger range than him...no hate he's a legend anyway.
Most beautiful n greatest thing of falling in love of freddie voice is his clearity of lyrics and range of his voice that makes him the greatest singer forever, that all experienced.
do you know about Dimash? hear him sing SOS. or the show must go on.
This is by far one of the best channels on youtube right now, thanks so much Polyphonic. Ever since I've heard Freddie go high on Under Pressure I've been fascinated by his vocal abilities, truly inhuman.
Daniel B Yeah I play guitar and try to emulate him.
*superhuman
What guitar do you like? There's a guy somewhere on YT who emulates Brian Mays style flawlessly also he's playing a Red Special copy guitar probably a Burns and a Vox AC30 modified which sounds beautiful.
Mickeyislowd I'm a Stratocaster kinda guy. I actually meant I try to emulate Freddy's tone and depth on strings.
How can you do that? Pls elaborate on what you mean.
Thank you for this wonderful video on Freddie's versatility. He was truly gifted.
On Freddy's voice: you could say It's A Kind Of Magic.
Finn Wesley Freddie!
"Nobody's ever gonna remember me when I'm dead anyway.."

@@patrickwalden4993 I'm pretty sure it's either a failed ARG or just someone mentally disabled. If you look at their other comments on this channel and their channel description, it's absolute nonsense. Before anyone says anything about them being foreign, they're saying way too much for me to think they're not speaking in a language they aren't at least comfortable with.
Velocity Peasant Makes sense.

Don't get Vaxxed
Freddie had the best voice in Rock History and noone can beat him in his singing Range. We love and miss you Freddie. 💖💖💖
Axl Rose has a better range, and Roger Daltrey a better voice.
geoff tate has the best range ua-cam.com/video/iBdxN2oy8xM/v-deo.html
the king my range is 1 note larger than his, there are a lot of rockstars who have a bigger range, but none of them can control their voice with such confidence and ease as Freddie, that’s really what made his voice special. I mean Brendan Urie’s voice is like almost 5 octaves
❤❤❤❤❤
I guess mariah carey has the best one
He was also the ultimate showman and performer!
I've always been in awe of Freddie Mercury's voice.
His voice and musical talent? Absolutely. His life and personal morals? No way.
Cool Cat by Queen absolutely stunned me because for as many times as I’ve heard the song I never knew it was Freddie at all. It led me to this video cause I couldn’t fathom his range
Every other rockstar: Am I a joke to you?!
Freddie Mercury: Yes darling!
Edit:Thanks for the likes guys!
Lol
If he actually said that, he'd have been such a prick lol
@@christosstamato527I think it was either Sid Vicious or Johnny Rotten.
Fantastic and fascinating analysis of Freddie's voice and style. Thank you. I wish there were more people like you teaching us what is great and why. Freddie the the greatest of all time.
Fun fact: Even though he had a massive overbite, Freddie refused to get his teeth fixed out of fear that it would mess with his voice.
That massive over bite came from 4 extra molars in his upper teeth.
I though it canines...@@roxannemoser; no?
rockerseven Great for singing (apparently) but I imagine terrible for giving a good Bj. 😂
I think it makes him all the more endearing....love and miss him
@@laurakolberg7923 agree.. I love his teeth 😍
I knew I loved Freddie's singing before I knew I loved Rock. Thats how powerful his impact to me was. For as long as I can remember the 85 Live at Wembely Concert rerun I watched as a kid is the most poignant musical memory of my childhood.
My God I love Freddie Mercury! I wish I was old enough to see him in concert before his passing! RIP Freddie you will live on in our hearts and ears forever!
The back catalogue of Queen is amazing in no small part due to Freddie Mercury's voice. From their 3rd album, Sheer Heart Attack, check out "In the Lap of the Gods" and "Leroy Brown" as well as "Killer Queen" which was a hit single. I remember that album just blowing away my friends and I. Freddie Mercury was amazing, a true wizard, a star.
Monte Lang I'm a huuuuge fan of Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack. Those two albums are impressive and so colorful. Lily of the Valley, March of the Black Queen, in the Lap of the Gods, Leroy Brown, Ogre Battle, Seven Seas of Rhye... Damn, they are all great
Marina De Bustos my favourites are queen II and a night at the Opera
His voice was absolutely amazing. His performances were like no other. Freddie Mercury was completely and simply mesmerizing ♥️ Great video!
The whole band is talented and they all can sing it's so impressive. But Freddie was the heart of the band.
Not the just the best singer in rock history.... the best singer in history...
He is a great singer but not the best
columbusshort45 Who's the best? I want to know who you think is better.
Dirtier and Danier Whitney Houston. She is the voice. She is the goat. And I love Freddie but he wasn't the best. Just my opinion
columbusshort45 Nah, I don't know anyone who had that much power with such a wide vocal range, he could also sing in so many different styles. It's something we probably won't ever see again, or for a long time.
Dirtier and Danier honestly, I believe it was between Elvis and Freddie. Elvis is my pick.
Who else thinks Freddie Mercury is the greatest singer of all time
well one of the worlds gratest bcs my opinion is that Christina Grimmie and harry styles also seem to have amazing voices and styles (lol)
xUnimportant x3 well Freddie made an impact bigger than them both that’s why he’s a legend
He was definitely one of them!
Well, he's up there. He has one of the most attractive voices to listen to, that's for sure.
xUnimportant x3 are you seriously putting harry style in the same category as Freddie? Please go back to your 2 year old boy bands smh
Fact of the matter is ,,,,,, Freddie Mercury was TOTALLY unique as was his voice,, NEVER was , or ever will be anyone to better it..... R.I.P. Freddie dearly loved and passionately missed...
He was a singer of songs .....a lover of life ....he played for his fans and the audiences ! He was so versatile
He loved making people join in with his songs ! He was a LEGEND !
