Mojo confused Queen at Live Aid 1985, with The Freddie Mercury Memorial Concert, Spring of 1992.
Live Aid was about raising money for relief in Ethiopia famine, while the Memorial Concert was the first introduction of The Mercury Phoenix Trust which raises money for HIV/AIDS around the world to this day.
Live Aid specifically was for relief due to the Ethiopia famine and was broadcast live from Wembley Stadium as well as John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia which were broadcast simultaneously. Wembley had 73,000 attendees, while the Philadelphia concert was attended by 81,000 plus people.
Both concerts had top artists performing, and Live Aid was stolen by Queen and as Brian May was quoted to had said, That was the moment the entire world loved Queen.
At first, Queen declined the invitation, but later decided to play there. For one ☝️ week before the concert, Queen practiced every day and honed the songs they were going perform into a 20 minute (their allotted time) mini-concert where they played 5 songs which were the best of Queen’s career. They practiced the set several times in the stadium itself, finagling with the sound to produce the best quality of sound where everyone would be able to hear the lyrics clearly, and produced the loudest sound allowed by the concert. Their sound engineer worked out how to get maximum sound without going over the decibels level required. They knew exactly how to fill the 20 minute gig, including time for Freddie interacting with the audience. By the time they took the stage late into the concert, most people there were there to hear their favorite band, and paid little attention to other performers. The second Freddie started playing piano, he had the audience enthralled. Even backstage, the performers paid attention to the next 20 minutes of pure perfection by Queen. While the dual concert would switch back and forth to performers, when Queen started, the cameras stayed on them for the full 20 minutes. Brian May would later recall that he knew the moment when everyone in the world fell in love with Queen.
The Freddie Mercury Memorial concert featured top artists who would perform Queen songs with remaining Queen members playing the songs. Artists included stars like Elton John, Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant, Guns N Roses’s Axel Rose and Slash, Annie Lennox and David Bowie, Luciano Pavarotti (one of Mercury’s favorite opera singers) and many more. George Michaels stole the concert performing “Love of My Life” flawlessly, where he drew in the crowd to sing the lyrics with him just as Freddie had always done. He was definitely channeling Freddie when he sang it.
Two powerful performances, but definitely the Live Aid performance should have been in at least the top 5, if not at number 1. The entire world stopped what they were doing to watch Queen.

So sad that MTV doesn’t play music anymore. My parents used to pull me away from MTV because I would sit for hours and watch videos and listen to music. Now, you can’t pay me to watch MTV.

Same. I remember when MTV greatest hits played tons of songs from decades earlier (in the early 90s) and I could watch that for hours. I watched MTV Europe it was completely in English I learned so much from that (I'm I Austrian we speak German)

I remember MJs moonwalk on the Motown special. I couldn’t believe my eyes! The whole country was blown away. MJ said that Gene Kelly called him that night to tell him what a phenomenal performance it was.
Fred Astaire said that MJ was the best untrained dancer he had seen.
I was lucky enough to be at both the Freddie tribute concert and live aid and I have to say they were the best 2 days in my life

@@loganroark3916 it was crazy but a good crazy cos everyone was there for the same thing, the music.
The biggest problem was the heat. It was hot and sunny and the only way to cool the people was with water cannons. It was a lot of fun though, I didn't feel claustrophobic though, people were chatting and I'm still in touch with a couple of people who were next to me. That was just the way it was back in the day (god I sound old). No cell phones, no Internet, you made an effort to keep friends

So basically music history starts in the 50s. And some Beethoven.
That’s when it started to be televised and seen and heard by much much MUCH more people. Same concept as how everything got bigger once the internet came around art just became a lot more accessible

Even popular music: when Irving Berlin’s song “Blue Skies” debuted on Vaudeville the audience requested it to be sung over and over and over again - the singer had to encore the song like 30 times before the audience was appeased enough to let her stop.

Beethoven actually wrote the 9th symphony based on his prior knowledge AND by feeling the vibrations from the different notes. And there are actually other deaf composers who have used this method to write music as well. Beethoven's life story is actually really inspiring.
Evelyn Glennie is an accomplished musician with xylophone glockenspiel etc, and is profoundly deaf. She has a gift of touch sensation call it what you will.....

I honestly get chills every time I watch Queen's performance at the "Live Aid" concert. Freddie Mercury had such a captivating stage presence that he virtually had all of those thousands of people eating from the palm of his hand. What and experience, and what a moment in time!

The best part is that people weren't sure if Queen could put on a good show without their big lighting rig and pyrotechnics, but Freddie oozed charisma and proved the doubters wrong!

PF’s worst album is pretty weak, mediocre at best (if you’re talking about AHM or Ummagumma), while Queen’s ANATO has at least 8 out of 12 songs that are really good (and 3 of them are hits) so it’s a pretty strong album.

@Jack Nicolas It's not about which moment was more Influential or who is better it's about the moments that brough changes in the industry, like you can actually categorize Music videos before thriller and after thriller and also, the way pop music sounds and how pop music went global after thriller. There's a reason why he is crowned "The king of pop" and has no argument for that title.

Queen, Beatles are a rock band, they influenced the rock genre mostly and as a group who played instruments. Where pop music and artists like MJ is more of a combination of choreography, dance routines, stage visuals, production and Music videoes. Nobody is topping Beatles and queen in the rock game and nobody is topping MJ in pop music and you can't combine or compare these 2 genres and put one over other cuz they carry their own value, form, and impact.

Knowing how the world is today, Freddie Mercury would have been the biggest pop icon not to mention the more music we will never get to hear from one of the most undeniably talented vocalist of all time.
He already was the biggest pop icon. Both then and now. Their full catalog of songs will keep you from being bored for a very long time. :}

I remember seeing the Beatles' first performance on Sullivan in '64. I was about one month shy of my eighth birthday. I still have a plastic Beatles wallet from '65.
Thriller Music Video(or Short Film) by MJ broke barriers of a music video and it helped MJ set the record for the most Grammys won in one night
Glad someone else thought to mention Thriller! I remember my family, along with aunts, uncles, cousins and grandmother gathering together specifically to watch the premiere on MTV, it was that huge. To this day, it's the only horror "movie" I enjoy watching. 🙂

A great anecdote about Beethoven conducting the 9th symphony during that performance was that since he had his back to the audience , when it was over, he didn't realize the audience was applauding , till the lead soprano/singer gently turned him around to see the audience cheering wildly.
And in true grumpy Beethoven fashion, when people congratulated him in the days following the premiere of the 9th how brilliant it was, he grumbled/complained that he didn't make any money off of it.
That was an awesome movie!

I was 14 when the “boys” made their appearance on Ed Sullivan. They that night changed the culture of long hair, and they had so many styles of music. I’ve been a Beatles fanatic and the solo music of John, George, The Traveling Willburys
A lot of the groups and single artists of the 80s until now got their inspiration from the Beatles . The Beatles will always be remembered for generations to come !
Elvis Presley paved the way for all the musicians you've listed because he was the first artist to break the mould of standing still while singing by moving energetically while he sang.
Elvis was also the very first artist to be broadcast on television worldwide via satellite in 1973 with the Aloha from Hawaii concert.
Your list is simply incomplete without mention of this.
Happy to see Freddie Mercury made this list twice. He deserves it. He had an epic impact on rock and roll history along with his mega talented band mates Queen!

Exactly my thoughts.
Tbh, I feel like that Beatles live performance should be lower. Like yeah, they revolutionised the music industry, but then, that would be referring more to their discography rather than this performance + it was full of screaming girls which ruined the vibe a bit. Queen at Live Aid should’ve been #2 bc it had more actual impact, especially since it was for a good cause.

The 9th symphony will forever hold a special place in my heart. It brings me to tears as I am instantly brought back to the last time I sang it. My jr high and high school choir director had us end every school year with the brilliant mind of Beethoven. He suffered a life ending heart attack between my sophomore year and my junior year. His current class alongside many alumni stood at the front of the church to pay our respects the best way we knew how. RIP Dr. Sether
Didn’t see that number one choice coming…lol. Leaving classical music to it’s own genre, the choice is always between Queen at Live Aid and The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. For me, it’s Queen. It’s very difficult to actually put into words how seismic that performance was and I don’t think it will ever be equalled. A completely unique moment in time where we witnessed arguably the greatest front man in rock history right at the absolute peak of his power.
Jimi Hendricks had no idea how to read or write music. He could just hear a song and play it.
Most musicians do lol he wasn't the only one. I'm the same way. I can't read or write music so I just hear it by ear.

Yeah, The Beatles on Sullivan is #1 and then a huge gap to whatever you want to put at #2.
That moment is the beginning of pop music and youth culture being intertwined into the fabric of society which would last until the end of the century before the world “shrunk” due to technology and music in general holding a lesser place in youth/pop culture.
That’s why I really appreciate all the movements in modern music that came after The Beatles: psychedelic, heavy metal, prog rock, punk, new wave, and my favorite -being a Gen X’er - alternative/grunge…just to name a few movements/revolutions.
Since the end of the 20th century, basically the end of grunge/alternative, music hasn’t had a prominent role in defining or expressing youth culture like it once did. I really miss that in general and think all the generations after X are kind of deprived on that front.
The spirit of this truism started with The Beatles on Sullivan which was before I was even born but I fully recognize that and appreciate it. What the Beatles gave us was magical because each subsequent movement/revolution was directly influenced by them. For my generation, guys like Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder let this be known in words as well as in their music.
Sorry. Elvis on Ed sullivan is number 1. According to the Beatles number 2 man. Without elvis there would be no Beatles. And just saying as far as live performing. Elvis on his worst day can outperfom them on their best day even at his fattest and drugged out mind. Your guys were nothing special when it came to performing live. They were much better at home in the studio

I was sick staying home when the 3 nights of Beatles on Ed Sullivan was on. I watched and ran back to bed when my parents came home. Day 2 they felt the warm TV... But I watched day 3 anyway . Changed my life!.
Even 30 years on I *still* vividly remember watching the Freddie Mercury tribute concert as a kid. My parents allowed me and my little sister to stay up and watch the whole thing.

Queen on Live Aid should have been #1. The crowd that day were not Queen fans and that’s why it’s a memorable moment in time. Queen and especially Freddie had them eating out of their hand. Live, no auto tune,no special effects. Just Queen!!!! Wow!!!!

Johnny Cash performing at San Quentin was legendary for another reason. On New Years Day of 1958 he performed there where country music legend, Merle Haggard was. Merle was in inmate and Johnny's performance inspired him.

@@csnide6702 I listen to the first artist to get their own channel on Siruis, ELVIS, all the time on Dish and in my car. Three generations of us. He is one of the only artists on Sirius that play only his music. Most others play a lot of other artists.

ALL by himself. He is not a member of a band. All alone, with good musicians around him, ELVIS has done some amazing things that get overlooked. He will live on forever, even being overlooked by these people who post on You tube. The 68 special was the first UNPLUGGED. Another amazing time in his life in that black leather.

David Bowie's first concert on tv was probably one of the most important music thing that ever happened. He inspired so many people about fashion and being themselves. It also changed music forever.
He was more of an influence in more musical genres than several people on this list including Queen. Plus the concert you’re talking about pretty much created The Smiths, The Cure, Oasis and a hundred different bands and musicians who literally changed the face of music.

Fun fact: My dad and his friends was once on Bob Marleys concert in sweden. The concert changed his life and affected his friends so much that they even started doing the same kind of music.

You could have included the world inclusive sing-along of Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond. That was one musical moment. So many fans making videos with hopes of being included. Those who were, were of all ages, nationalities, races, cultures and creeds. Shows how much the man is loved.
Jimi Hendrix playing "The Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock was/is awesome! Wish I had been able to attend. Was evacuating for a life-altering hurricane at 12 years of age.

Beatles are the kings, Paul is by far the best. Simply because he never has taken himself too seriously. I love the clip used here, makes me smile every time, because he is just having the BEST time!
