Just a quick primer on how I classify different rifles types
    SPR: (special purpose rifle)
    GPR/Recce/Mountain Gun: General purpose/scouting rifle
    SBR: Short barreled rifle
    PDW: Personal Defense Weapon

Something to add (semi response to a Instagram video on on Recce builds)
A "Recce Rifle" is a rifle built with a certain philosophy in mind (described by GPR in my video)
Recce is a vague mission category.
These don't need to be the same thing. You don't have to use a "Recce rifle" on a Recce mission. Recce mission certainly don't need a recce rifle.
Hence me calling the recce rifle a "GPR" because people get confused by the term "recce", assuming you must match the name to the mission.
Conversely, a SPR that you bring on a recce mission, doesn't make your SPR a "recce/GP" rifle. It's still a SPR.
Hope that clears things up. Once again, my take, there really isn't a official definition here outside of SPR

Not ideal with CQ work but not terrible, great “do it all” gun, same ballistics Teddy Roosevelt hunted African big 5 with and short and light enough to clear rooms with, W in my book. Man, I feel like I struck gold coming upon your channel. I'm an older guy who hasn't shot much in 30 years. I've moved to a state where I am no longer hindered. Nevertheless the technology has changed so much, and the specialization (subspecialization!) of platforms has grown exponentially... and it's been incredibly bewildering. To top it off I'm a lefty as well. I guess my point of entry outght to be a GPR. Given that, can you point me in a direction, resources wise, I can use in order to make an informed decision regarding what my first AR purchase should be? I'm presuming the smart thing would be to stick with right handed weapons but tailor them to left handed use? Thanks & subscribed!

I would buy a prebuilt rifle (don't build it) from a reputable manufacture.
Function wise, you can actually do a fair bit with a stock right handed weapon. And I did that for many years.
In order of importances; I would get a ambi safety, ambi charging handle, and ambi mag release.
The last two of those are far less important than the first.
Optics wise it's really your choice.
I'd join the discord server if can (it's basically a chatting service that replaced most forums). There's a link in the description of the video. Jump into the channel and basically say what you said above, and many, myself can answer questions in near real time.

Ammo can be a pretty big deal for these choices. My 9.5" 300blk with a 6" suppressor gets 2300ft/s with 110gr V-MAX for +/-5" MPBR to 275 yards. At 275 yards, the 110gr is still doing 1600ft/s, or hitting with as much or more energy than a .357 magnum revolver at the muzzle. It's not quiet like subs obviously, but it's quieter than anything considering the compact size, power, and range capabilities. It's a little louder than a .22LR rifle (loud but not ear-obliterating like an unsuppressed centerfire rifle), but the size of an average carbine, long MPBR and hits hard within that distance.
Also have a look at 300 blk 110gr v-max gel tests before assuming that lightweight bullets like that underpenetrate, because they don't seem to exhibit underpenetration as much as 5.56 v-max does.

    • @turnitdowntyler
      @turnitdowntyler 2 роки тому +1

I am a firm believer in 300BLK and have a few setups tailored to home defense and a backpack gun. If Im defending my family, I'm taking one of those setups. The achilles heal of 300BLK is ammo availability and cost per round. Yes it's a reloaders cartridge, but it's been SAAMI spec for sometime now and although it has come down in price significantly, IMO popularity hasn't quite matched relative price yet. And yes I remember paying a dollar a round of FMJ back in 2012/13.
And because of that, I have 5.56 as my go to for everything else outside of HD/Bag gun. 10.5", 14.5", and 16" but will probably snag a 11.85" PWS MK111 soon.

If you throw a non-BDC (as in, actual MIL or MOA reticle) on a 10.3” .300 blk, you can just as easily make shots out to 500 and have more energy on target than a 556 out of a 20” bbl at 500 yards. Come up is a lot more, and wind calls are a little more extreme, but if you’ve doped everything, it’s just not that difficult.

I was thinking i wanted a heavy hitter that could go from 10m out 300m with ease. So i got a light weight 1x prism and vertical forgrip.
Six months later i figured I'd try a hybrid forgrip/bipod. And Wow, the the bipod greatly enhanced the stability for stationary shooting. Giving me much greater confidence in reaching out.
So i ended up getting the 3.5 power TA 110 ACOG. Still waiting for my spacer to arrive. But now I'm much more excited about getting some range time so i can better familiarize myself with the weapon.

I've built a couple 5.56 rifles with one an 11.5" barrel and one in 16" and a 308 dmr style rifle with an 18" barrel and I got to say you hit the nail on the head with the concept that GPR can be short or long since both my 5.56 guns are sort of GPR capable but my DMR is more for that extended range of 500+ yards out. And if I need anything more that 800 yards I'd rather be throwing a sniper cal like 300 win mag or 338 lap mag. Modern bullet design is incredible, with the right bullet you can extend a cartridge's "effective" range fairly significantly. Just as a single example, while they are pricey, tipped match rounds (not OTM) can noticeably extend effective range because the tip forces expansion at pretty low velocities. At a low enough velocity you lose a lot of cavitation, but can still achieve greater effectiveness from exoansion and fragmentation.
As a really quick and dirty example, a 55gr FMJ is super dependent on pretty high velocity to cause significant fragmentation and cavitation and typically starts to mostly just poke holes at about 2200~ish FPS, meanwhile something like a sierra TMK, a hornady ELD-M, or a nosler ballistic tip can expand at velocities as low as 1400fps (I've personally tested 73gr ELD-M at 1400 and it still expands pretty well) different bullet construction will affect the velocity at which a bullet will expand, but tipped match rounds are probably my all-time favorite for all around performance. And because they're generally also match bullets they have (relatively) high BC's and will retain their velocities better than most bullets.

And replacing parts doesn't require a hydraulic press.
Not to mention a AR upper will work on any lower and vise versa (with very few exceptions) same with other parts.
Where a AK, it's not just good enough to know if it's a 47, 74 of AKM, nor is knowing the model good enough. No, you need to know, which country it was from and then down to which plant it came from and during which time period.
After all that, the part you get probably needs a Dremel to modify the new part to make it fit.
My AK friend can only dream of parts swapping and parts just fitting while he Dremels that bran new scope mount because it has some part interfering with some other part.

@@SilverStarHeggisist I’ve owned 3 AKs at this point, never needed a dremel, never needed a press. You can chop a significant portion of the barrel if you really wanted to and not have any real negative impact, in fact it’ll be more of a benefit than anything because the 7.62 doesn’t gain much from a longer barrel at all except for weight. The only tools I’ve ever needed were a screwdriver, a file or two and a hammer and a punch set that’s it. Yes some parts need fitting because of slight differences between the country of origin, but for the most part stamped receiver AK furniture works with most stamped receiver AKs.

@The Angry Astronaut I know at least one of my friend's AKs was milled. He had a 7.62/39 AK pistol, AK74 And a still has his Vepr 308.
His 7.62/39 he managed to break before he even had a chance to fire it the first time. Apparently without even trying to, every time he picks things up he automatically starts breaking them (why he uses AKs over AR). In this case, he snapped the front iron sights.
Anyway the reason for the press, or so I've been told because I'm not s AK person, is the 12 ton press is for changing the barrel.
I've seen him use a dremel to make handguards and stocks fit. As well as a side saddle rail to fit.

@@SilverStarHeggisist milled receivers are special, they need their own furniture or they need heavy fitting. As far as the press yes you’d need it for a new barrel but when your barrel lasts 70k rounds or more the chances of you actually needing a new one is pretty slim to none. If you want a shorter barrel just take it to a gunsmith who specializes on AK work and just have them chop/lathe it to the desired length.

However, I went a bit unusual in my build. I opted for a Faxon 18" Gunner profile 5.56 barrel (I've used one before and got sub-moa groups out of it), a 17" carbon fiber hand guard, and a titanium gas block, all for weight savings. All this paired with a KP-15 lower, which I absolutely adore. I'll still keep my GPR upper around, but I got to realizing a while back that I don't think I've ever used my LPVO on the 1x for my most common day-to-day uses, which is mostly toting it around on a midwestern farm in case I spot coyotes.

When I build an AR, my thoughts are how will this work for my AO in the most realistic type of likely scenarios. Based on my AO, mostly wooded, suburb type area's limited around 150 yards and in, with the occasional 4-600 yard fields, that helped narrow things down to fit my build for these parameters.

It’s a solid GPR and does everything decent but nothing exceptional. It’s even better now that I have a offset T1 style dot, but if I could only have one AR for the rest of my days it would be this one. I'd go 14.5 p&w if you didn't have a 16", but it's not worth the cost or the time to do it if you have a 16" upper in which you intend to do the same thing. If these are for different things, like a competition gun vs a tactical gun, by all means do it.

    • @MinimumSpeedOperator
      @MinimumSpeedOperator Рік тому

Only reason to do it is if you pin and weld a mount for a suppressor to keep that length down. Otherwise keep that inch and a half for velocity. I have found in my experience there is ALMOST no good reason to go shorter than 16 on a GPR unless your use case requires a can. Then 14.5 let’s you stay legal and be just that fraction faster in gun handling with the suppressor. I know this is an old thread but figured I’d contribute.

My limited practice time is basically completely eaten up by basic drills for home defense, which is why i am likely to add a pdw pcc or 300blk to the collection before an SPR type. I'm not bad/probably above average in marksmanship, but to me the limited time is better spent practicing movement, reload, using concealment, and mastering the ccw, etc.

The 5-25 typically stays on 10-12x magnification, and the dot is used as the primary optic for close range engagements. Having the extra magnification is GREAT for spotting for the other guy in my team, as well as making better use of the FFP reticle and gathering accurate ranging data. As you said, though, it comes at a significant weight cost. If I had time to prepare, I'd take the 308 instead... but if I had to just grab one and go, I'd definitely go with the 5.56.
