I just found this, was looking for a way to do a picture on fabric. Last time mine faded away and that was very heartbreaking because I had to take apart my quilt to replace that block! Thank you for posting this!
I previously did a printed label for the back of my quilt- a few washes of the quilt and the label is useless because it faded so badly. I didn't use Retayne, so I have hopes to try that experiment again with better results.
UA-cam can read my mind. I’m getting ready to make some junk journals and wanted to add fabric pages. Was going to start searching for a tutorial and this came up in my suggestions. Very clear and understandable instructions. Thank you.
Oh WOW. I did this today and it worked like a dream. I ordered the labels from Amazon. The fabric didn't catch in my printer and the designs I chose are all looking good. Thank you.
This was very interesting. Thank you. I am from Australia. I am currently hand sewing a large memory quilt for my son, which is already quilted. I have a large photo film reel appliqué consisting of 44 photos. I used Matilda’s own ink jet printable fabric sheets which were very expensive for the amount that I was using. There are 5 sheets in a pack for $25 Aud. I get 2 photos on a sheet, so it was an expensive project. As an inexperienced quilter it was all I knew. The photos are beautiful and, on advice from my local quilting shop, I put on fusible web and quilted it on the front. I am currently in Croatia finishing the quilt and I needed to print the label and one photo, using the same printable fabric. The photos weren’t as nice as the existing photos and it appears that there is a slight pinkish hue. Not bad, but it’s there. I had no choice but to use it as I don’t want to take the quilt back to Melbourne (I’ve already taken 18 months.) I’ve concluded that the ink must be different. With my next two quilts for my other children, I will try your method. Thank you.

I've never wanted to buy the cheesy looking printable fabric but so great to know that you can make your own. Or make your own labels for things. wow, whole new worlds to explore. Thank you so much for the detailed explanations.

Hey Lisa ! Such a great video, so helpful. I will definitely be ordering these sheets from Amazon. I will be using them for my quilt labels. I have jammed my inkjet with a label on freezer paper and these sheets look so nice a stable. I hold my breath until my label comes out of the printer ! ! You do such a wonderful job explaining everything you are doing. Will have to give the retayne a try also. ((hugs))
After this week I'm SOLD on these sheets verses the freezer paper....so much faster and I'm getting great prints. I was still able to use it for the video though lol. Sending hugs back your way!!

I'm a new huge fan of the labels verses the freezer paper after this week heheheee......it's so much faster and I'm getting some really great print results
@@TheQuiltmakerHomestead I've ordered mine! Happy to see what I had been told about Retayne not working on toner was incorrect. Obviously, it makes a huge difference! Wondering if I run my sheet through my laminator if that would be hotter than my iron. May have to give that a shot. :-)
Thank you for this video and sharing your knowledge with us. How do you get the image or text to print to the full size of the fabric? I print fabric labels for my projects and I am looking to use this as an easier way to do that but I want to utilize the whole paper/label size or as much as I can to maximize my printing without wasting any of the fabric.

Do you hand wash your fabric or just put it in the washing machine? For pre washing your fabric. Just wondering What a great video, learned so much. Can’t wait to make this mug rug. Thanks for sharing your video with all of us. You are a awesome teacher. ❤
Lisa thank you for all of your time and effort. Question, since you are using a laser printer, have you done the same experiment with ink jet. Or do you know if the results will be the same. Again, thank you, for all of your hard work, it is appreciated.
I have only printed on the June Tailor colorfast sheets with my husband's inket....I have seen many people print using an inkjet with Retayne or Bubble Jet
Lisa, I love your mugrug and all your videos. I downloaded the pattern and wondered if the words and graphics could be changed.? None of my friends sew or even do crafts. But they do drink coffee. Would love to be able to change things around . I just love the idea of printer fabric, how cool is that! Thanks again for all the information you so generously give. ❤️
Hi Sharon, the download is in pdf form and so I don't think it can be changed. I used a program called Inkscape to design this. It is a vector based software and a free download online. You could design your own custom prints for fabric :)
@@TheQuiltmakerHomestead I am also interested in the process of creating the pdf. I am planning a project to take hand drawn photos and add text, size and print onto fabric to make a quilt and am having trouble with how to create the image (photo and text) for printing. Will you ever do a video on the quilting foot and how to use? I’m a newbie.. actually a video on different types of feet for sewing :) I have 2 Janome ( one is for embroidery, but I’m still trying to learn:(
About ten years ago we took my mother into our home to care for her. I had to learn about all her business stuff. When I was doing this I decided I needed a new printer that would print legal size documents so I could copy and share things with my sibs. As I went through this process, I was told that laser printers, print would face after many years. So since the documents I was going to copy and share were in some cases already 60 years old I got the ink jet. I was told it was the same principle as when you find that old sales slip that has been in net printed from the register. Have you hear of tbis? Have the laser printers changed? Just curious. Shopping for another printer and thought I would ask.
hmmmmmmm interesting, I hadn't heard that before. Of course I've only been using my laser printer for about 3 years now.....so far no fading but wonder what will happen in 60 years ????? I do know after research about laser printers is that the toner is actually finely ground polyester which the printer heat sets to the paper/fabric. Thank you so much for this tutorial!!! Great teaching! I'm new to sewing & quilting. What kind of thread do you use for quilting? If I wanted to make a t-shirt with this design, Is there a way to adjust the Printable to just sewing machine & text only? Do you use different stabilizers or backing inside of a t-shirt?
You are so welcome Jennifer, thanks for watching! My current favorite thread is from AK Trading Company and you can find it on Amazon...comes in a huge amount of different colors and on large cones. It lasts forever lol. The PDF I created may be altered if you have a PDF reader that you can edit with?????? I think that would require an upgraded version of Adobe Reader maybe??? Not sure. Asking about the stabilizer.....are you asking about t-shirt quilts??? I have a ton of videos on that, my favorite is the Pellon P44F :)
Hi Lisa, I too enjoy watching your videos. Your explanations are “spot on”. Before watching this video, I watched your video using the June Taylor fabric/paper. Do you get better results with this method as opposed to the June Taylor? (I have an inkjet printer.) Thank you. Judy from GA
In this video I used my color laser printer. It works really great, but you can't use the June Taylor sheets with it. If you want to use those, you'll need an inkjet printer. When I used them in that video I used my hubby's printer....and those sheets I'd say are the best thing I've found to use if using the inkjet :)
@@TheQuiltmakerHomestead Great. I will try the sheets. I thought it had something to do with your Laser printer but just wanted to be sure. Thanks for responding. Blessings to you. Judy
Hello Lisa ~ Thank you for the video. I could not help but notice how much the fabric shrank. I have been thinking about making a memory quilt and this would be helpful.
It did shrink quite a bit......maybe because the back was not pre-washed....and I'm thinking the batting may shrink a bit too as it was cotton. Although I think it lends to a more comfy homespun quilt look hehehee
I wonder if you really think the label paper is actually faster. I have only used the freezer paper with mono printer and I am able to remove fabric directly off of freezer paper without any issues and all at once, no stickiness. No I haven't washed my samples yet, so I'll have to try washing. Should we use the Retayne on our mono printing? Also trying to decide if I want to purchase a real heat press for about the same price as Cricut press. How do you like cricut ?
I really do like the freezer paper and had I not tried the labels I'd still be using it :) One thing about the freezer paper, is that I would press and press to get all the "air bubbles" out and for the fabric to lay flat and then when I print each time I'd hold my breath and hope that it didn't jam in my printer hahahaa. MOST of the time it didn't but every so often...JAM. One thing I found after making this video is that if I let the fabric and label cool off it actually peeled easier.....so heating it back up just caused it to stick more.....if using the prewashed fabric in my case lol. So many variables!! My monoprinter doesn't require the Retayne. Interesting though I have a friend who has same exact printer and her toner washes out.....so it could be where the cartridges are made. Again, variables lol. One of the reasons I always say each person will need to do their own testing because it's all so different. I'll tell you, I wanted the bigger Cricut but when I went to get it, they only had the 6x7...I settled. I still want a bigger one HOWEVER....I love that it heats up so quick...and is easily moved around and not heavy. I'd like to get a regular heat press but do I want it out all the time??? What designated space do I want to give to it??? I can't say that I won't get a regular heat press however I want to justify the space and do I do enough stuff with it to do that??? hmmmm lol
What a sweetheart you are. It's so generous of you to share your knowledge--and your PDF designs!
Thank you so much 😀

I wonder if you put an ice pack on the one that is pre-washed might make removal easier.
I wonder if you starched the fabric on the back of the fabric before adding it to the adhesive paper if it would make it easier to peel.
I can't say that I won't get a regular heat press however I want to justify the space and do I do enough stuff with it to do that??? hmmmm lol
Wow! You are so cool! Thank you for this entertaining and informative video!
