Yes it ties into Prey which makes Prey a sadder movie because if that Predator had the Pistol, it means The woman in Prey later became a victim during a 2nd visit from the predators since She had ownership of the Pistol at the end of Prey

To Predator the cops, gangs and CIA, guerrillas and special forces are all the same; prey. That's why he hunts Harrigan's crew in metro just the same as it did the other groups. The leaders (The guy falling down at the beginning, King Willie, Keyes and Harrigan) are left last. Harrigan had little idea what he was after until Willie hinted the Predator is invisible and non-human.

The pistol served 2 purposes. It was a "trophy" for Harrigan, for killing one of them in hand to hand combat, and a message, "We've been here before, we'll be back again."

The Predator didn't kill Leona, because it would have had to kill the fetus in the process. She was worthy prey, but the fetus was so defenseless that it would have been a completely dishonorable kill.
The point of giving Harrigan the pistol was to acknowledge him as a hunter. Basically, he earned a legendary weapon as a token of their respect.

@garveydent This happens in the comics as well in the series Predator Concrete Jungle. There was a gang member that a Predator was tracking and about to kill, but the gang member's girlfriend ran up to him and she was 6 months pregnant with his baby. They hugged each other and the gang member placed his hand over her belly and kissed it. The Predator acknowledged that the gang member was protecting his mate and his offspring so he spared him.

This happens with real life hunters as well. Honorable ones don't kill females (example deer) if they can help it, and especially not does with a calf. Cause killing the doe would also lead to the death of the calf, so they only kill bucks.

I think this is probably the most underrated movie in the Predator franchise. IMO it's pretty much on a level with the original Predator. I love how the setting and characters are so different from the setting and characters in the original, and yet there are so many parallels between them.
As far as the predator sparing the life of the pregnant Leona goes... I don't think it was about her not being a threat, or about the predator having a heart. Hunters typically try not to kill pregnant or young animals (or mothers with young who can't yet fend for themselves) because they want those young to grow up and keep the population from dwindling due to over-hunting. I always figured it's the same thing going on here.

    • @refurbishedtechpriest9076
      @refurbishedtechpriest9076 Рік тому +11

It's basically part of their Code, right up there with not killing (defenseless) children or sickly prey. While no doubt that practicality is part of why they don't hunt pregnant women, it's also a matter of honor for them.

That gun has a whole story behind it in a comic.
That same predator was in a hunt on earth and choose a pirate captain to be his prey. The captain was a man of principle and had one rule, never steal from a church. His crew tried a mutany and steal the money of a church and the captain fought against his crew, the predator, for the fear of losing his prey, fought alongside the captain and beat the whole crew. When they were about to start a honorable battle, a pirate shoot the captain from the back, the predator, furious, killed that man with his plasma gun, but the captain was about to die. With his last breath the captain gave the predator his gun and told him to keep it, the predator burried the captain and threw in his balde, imitating the voice of the captain he said "keep it". And he left with that gun the captain gave him and kept it until the events of this movie.

It is underrated for a reason. It was just not a great sequal to Predator. It may be a good movie, but it was an interesting choice to follow up such a classic. I just wanted more from this movie. My least favourite of the predator movies. Thatt includes the Alien vs Predator movies, which are alright but nothing great. I just saw the new Alien movie and it was alright but did not add much to the franchise IMO. I love Alien, Aliens and Predator but after this it is quite a mixed bag. I feel Alien is a scarier monster but Arnie just smashed it in Predator. I would have loved Arnie to return in the sequal so I have to give the nod to Alien as Ripley is a bad ass but Alien 3 is just terrible. One of the worst sequals ever made.

I think the King Willie thing is supposed to be more of a reverence thing--he's the leader of the gang, so Predator would have noticed how so many dangerous men were showing him respect. Plus, I imagine the reason Preddy was going after Danny Glover and his friends was because it saw them win that shootout at the very start, but now that you mention it the "Trying to pick a fight" explanation does make a ton of sense as well. Or maybe working its way up the food chain and saving who it thought was strongest for last?

And he is trying to tell Harrigan he is dealing with an invisible thing "cannot see the eyes of the demon until he come calling" something that is after him. He says he knows where Predator is as it's hunting them from "the otherside" ie cloaking.

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens Рік тому +3

I think it's also about how the title, "Predator", has levels. It can refer to the Yaut'ja (Predators), but it can also refer to the humans acting as predators, and the nature of predation itself. Willie is, as he says himself, the new King of the Streets in LA, essentially making him the apex predator of the underworld ecosystem. This makes him a clear target for the Predator, even if he's not necessarily a huge challenge in lone combat.
Also, presumably Willie didn't go to meet Danny without some serious security, so I would assume that detail was both very combat-effective and also taken-out before Willie himself was dispatched. Why they wouldn't have shown or referenced that is an interesting choice to consider.
The Predator, as a lone hunter, seems to find extra challenge in taking-on other predators who work effectively in teams (eg. Danny's squad, Arnold's spec-ops unit). I think that was what made him pursue Danny and his friends particularly. Taking them down more-or-less separately is a good way to acknowledge that the Predator is not invincible and that it's aware of the fact and thus, in an additional way, clearly intelligent and not just a dumb savage animal killing anything it sees. It also makes the Predator even more frightening to humans, but in a different way than, say, Xenomorphs; where Xenomorphs seem to take one of our greatest human strengths, ie. communication and co-operation, and use it to beat us at our own game, the Predator shows it can beat us without using co-operation at all. It could have called to the other Predators on the ship when it was in trouble, but it didn't and probably wouldn't, and I doubt the others would have answered if it had.

I really like the direction, the rhythm, how the actor delivers the desperation and performance of facing the Predator, how the scenes were thought out in these moments, how the film advances and improves in some senses from the previous one, making it less dated in how it presents itself. , also the opening of a mythology about predators, which seems like a very good universe to be explored if done well. I always wanted to know how their society works. I recommend you play some predator game too. I think there's an Alien vs Predator game that's pretty cool.

There was an AvP (v Colonial Marine) multi-player shooter game for the short-lived Atari Jaguar system that was pretty neat. IIRC, it had a neat scoring-system for the Predator where you earned more points if you used less powerful weapons to make your kills. Eg., killing with a spear got you a lot more points than making the same kill with your shoulder-cannon. Seemed a good encapsulation of the Predator ethos.

  • @ericmartin8870
    @ericmartin8870 Рік тому +21

That's one of the things I've always really liked about the Predator race too, they have a definite code of honor that guides and shapes their behavior during hunts. They don't have much interest in prey that doesn't offer a sporting kill, like the sick (Weyland in AvP) or weakened (maybe not how WE'D see it, but to a Pred a pregnant woman isn't really an intimidating opponent). Doesn't mean you should just insert yourself into a Predator's affairs and intentionally get in their way, that probably won't end well for you regardless...but if you don't present yourself as a worthy target they generally don't much care about you, and if you should happen to prove yourself as a worthy hunter by their standards (for example, defeating one of their number or being otherwise honored by the clan like Alexa in AvP) they'll treat you with a measure of respect.
There are several novels that came out back when these movies were all fresh and new, and I used to love reading them as I grew up. In my personal opinion, they did a better job fleshing out the lore than the last couple of movie sequels though I'll be honest: while I didn't HATE Predators or The Predator, I definitely recognize that they weren't really...good. Predators has some interesting ideas and a some cool action, including one of the more interesting human rosters...it just had its problems too. The Predator was honestly kind of schlocky, but if you're just there to watch the Preds pop the tops off some cans of wholesale whoopass, there's some cool stuff in there.
AvP: Requiem wasn't...idk, it wasn't BAD. It turned up the violence/gore scale a bit beyond what the first AvP did, but while that was awesome it also felt a little like they were trying too hard at times. A number of their choices (particularly where the Aliens were concerned) came off as a bit too "shock factor" to really feel very enjoyable. Like any of the films, there's some mighty cool stuff in there...but you just have to kind of accept it as definitely not trying to win any awards for great writing or whatever.
Getting to see your enthusiasm for these movies has been so much fun ever since you discovered this world through Prey! Aliens and Predators have been some of my favorite franchises and movie monsters since I was a young teenager, and it's great to get to see someone experience it for the first time and reflect some of that same excitement I used to feel when it was all new to me too. I'll admit that I'm SLIGHTLY more an Alien fan than Predator, but I wholly approve of those of us who prefer the Preds. It's all awesome, and I'm glad you got to join the fandom. I won't lie, I'm a little jealous of that badass hat, lol.

Harrigan does get fired from the police force after feeling guilty over Danny's murder.
The City Hunter Predator kills Danny then takes his skull and spine as a trophy where he climbs up a building getting struck by lightning.
This happens to Jerry later on.
The City Hunter Predator follows Jerry and Leona to the subway where he jumps on the back of the train leading to the subway showdown.

Jerry follows Keyes and his men from the hospital to the helipad after the take Ramon's mistress.
Ramon Vega actually survives the City Hunter Predator slaughtering the Jamaicans after they ambush him in a warehouse where they try to sacrifice him. Ramon ends up in shock after what he witnessed.
Ramon's mistress tells Keyes' men that it was a demon from hell that killed all the Jamaicans.
Anna from the first film tells Keyes and his men that the Predator was hunting Dutch and his friends like it was a game.
Keyes explains to Harrigan that Dutch escaped from an Army Hospital and hasn't been seen since the 1987 Guatamala incident.
Keyes' men begins following Harrigan through the streets but the Predator is following him as well. He even walks into a taxidermy store where he touches a stuffed lion until a jogger sees it through the shop window but the Predator cloaks himself and the jogger thinks it was the heat getting to him.
King Willie's death was a lot different than the final cut of the movie: He sees the Predator in a fire escape where he opens fire with a gold plated Uzi as his main weapon where he shoots, as the City Hunter Predator jumps from fire escape to fire escape. He runs out of ammo and uses a sword as his secondary weapon where the City Hunter Predator jumps 10 feet in front of him. "You can't see the eyes of the Demon..." says the Predator imitating Willie.
An alternative ending was scripted but never filmed: Rather than Harrigan killing the City Hunter, it was the elder Predator Grayback who decapitates the City Hunter then gives Harrigan the Flintlock pistol before he leaves the ship and sees it fly off into the sky.

The predator usually gets away, as Anna revealed in the first Predator, talking about how sometimes they come to her country when it gets hot, and make trophies of men. These movies are just the few times the predator lost, but the rest of the species still comes in and collects the body and technology, if it wasn't destroyed. I liked that this movie added new vision modes for the predator, because of course such advanced technology wouldn't only have one vision mode. However, they did screw up when the predator's mask came off in this one, and it still saw in infrared, not the full red motion-based vision from the first movie, when that predator took off its mask to fight Arnold. They gave him the pistol as a trophy because it was human technology, so it didn't break their rule about letting alien technology fall into another species' hands.

Great reaction! I love your pure love for the Predator. I saw this film in the theater when I was 15, and I loved it!! I thought that the ending was the coolest thing I'd ever seen, because of the world-building aspect. I really got a sense of how expansive the Predator's world was and also how long their species has been hunting on an interstellar scope. I might add that the story mostly wasn't confusing at all for audiences back in the day. Current audiences are used to every bit of a character mythos being spoon-fed to them with no loose ends to speak of. It used to not be that way. The typical viewer was trained to make inferences. For instance, when the Chief Yautja gives the gun to Danny Glover, we all assumed that it was out of respect for human-kind as a whole (across time and irregardless of cultural difference). I remember asking myself, "What other historic situations, settings, and cultures has the Predator species ritualistically hunted in?" Japan? Africa? The field seemed wide open. The Director of "Predator 2" was smart to seed little bits of the Predator lore throughout the film. It's as if they gave us the first part of the sentence and the audience was left to finish the sentence with our imagination.

Whether or not any given Predator follows the "rules" the species seem to have is dependant. After all, not everyone is going to follow the rules and some will break them. For example, the one in Prey is notable for actually breaking several rules established in the other films. It just so happens that this one is fine with leaving the young alone... after all, that's how you make sure they grow up to be a better hunt in a few years

This movie was my first experience when it came to the Predator series when I was a kid, and, maybe because of nostalgia, it’s probably still my favorite, including design and characteristics.
When it comes to the gun, I think that it was more of a reference to the comics that focus on a variety of them, in various scenarios, and various forms. What I’m most interested in is a movie to cover their origins, but I kind of doubt that it’d ever get made. It would likely have to be a movie you had to read through the entire time, and, while I wouldn’t mind, I can’t imagine that the general audience would have that kind of patience.

The reason the City Hunter Predator spared Leona isn't because he "didn't see her as a threat because she was pregnant". It's because killing a pregnant mother is one of the BIGGEST taboos in Predator/Yautja society. Their biggest taboos are, don't kill pregnant mothers, don't kill children, don't kill the deathly ill, don't kill the very old, and don't kill your own kind in cold blood. If you violate ANY of these taboos in Predator society, you will INSTANTLY be branded with the title "Bad Blood" and then you have two options: either turn yourself in to be ritually executed by your own clan, or go on the run, in which case they will send an Enforcer after you, and the Enforcer will make your death ANYTHING but merciful.

  • @davidhasselblad2898

I'm so glad you got to see this one. Because of the subway scene I knew you were looking for a reason to root for the predator more. And I figured you'd like the predator seeing she was pregnant and the kid with the toy gun. How they differentiate threat. The baby is unarmed and can't defend itself. So in killing her he'd kill the baby which is an unhonorable kill. So his punishment would be death or exile. Only to be hunted down as prey by other Yautja. The elders and the other predators watch his hunt. Like a live feed back to the ship. So if he does anything wrong on a hunt the others will have questions. Like why didn't you check if the gun was a toy? Why didn't you check if she was pregnant. "As predators on the homeworld run as a matriarchy pretty much" and they regard motherhood as sacred. So they will knock out a pregnant being instead of killing it. Incapacitated means no threat.
It went after king willy because it observed. It saw all these men led back to king willy. All dressed similarly. Saw his concealed sword and how danny glovers character was shoveled around by this guy.
So the predator did two things. One issued a challenge to glover. And two, got to fight melee, and melee battles are sacred fights. Thus, skull troohy just like Billy and the ranger in this movie. Because he went out using a machete. And yeah, if you kill a predator they others will respect it and give you a trophy. They are fully honor bound. From either a previous hunt or a trade of trophy's.
Glad to watch a reactors that roots for the predator like I do.

The predators may seem like heartless sport hunters but they actually have a strict honor code that forbids them from hunting weak or sick prey unless it's for food or still a threat but when it comes to pregnant females and children they're off limits period even if they're a threat. If prey defeats them but shows mercy they are to kill themselves along with their opponent to preserve their technology or give them a prize seeing them as an equal. Those who break the honor code are killed or banished and if they escape punishment they're deems as "badbloods" and are to be killed on sight.

In the original story in the comics, Raphael Adolini was a captain of a pirate ship, who long story short fought side by side with the predator when there was a mutiny in his ship, after getting stabbed in the back, captain Adolini gave his pistol to the predator as a sign of respect before he died, it was a cool idea having the pistol as an Easter egg in Prey, too bad it wasn't the original story

Watching how hyped you are for all things predator is pure gold :) As for some of you questions, here's my take:
    - the gun - predators respected his win enough to award him with the trophy (and alien tech or their brother's body part were not an option)
    - sparing humans - it's a code of honor thing. Killing children, pregnant females, unarmed and sick makes you less of a predator, so do better.

Late to posting here, but there's a few things they did in this to distinguish it from the prior film. The Predator in the first film was actually a very old veteran, who enjoyed taking his time and picking his prey off one at a time. This Predator the director wanted to make much younger, angrier, more impatient and craving excess. Each kill had to be more extravagant than the last. You notice when his gear starts to malfunction, he simply rips it off and discards it, whereas the prior Predator took the time to shut it off.
And actually, the Predators do eat humans. You'll notice that when he's cleaning the flesh and brains out of King Willie's skull, that suction tube goes up under his mask to his mouth. And he took the one body that he had strung up in the first fight presumably to eat.
The Predator's code of honor is somewhat flexible, but he took Willie's head because in the Predators eyes Willie had conducted himself honorably. Instead of shooting at the Predator or trying to get his henchmen, he chose to face his death with a weapon in hand to hand fighting, the same way Billy did in the first film. Even if he wasn't a great fighter, he still had fighting spirit and the Predator admires that. That's also why he took Jerry's head, and not Danny's. Danny resorted to just a pistol, he was just an average kill, mainly to provoke Harrigan. But Jerry when corned and knowing he hand no chance of winning, showed he was going to fight with whatever he could get his hands on right to the end. The Predator takes the skulls of targets that are the most worthy, the most admirable and challenging. The ones that he hangs up or skins, they're just average kills, nothing special about them to the Predator.
The pistol actually becomes even more symbolically important once you understand its history, and how much it meant to that Predator to give it to Harrigan. It was wielded by the very first human to encounter and then kill a Predator, albeit one of a different tribe. The grim implication of this though is that Predator, who hands over the pistol, possibly killed her and took it. It's been shown in the lore and literature that, if they aren't killed, these things can live a really, really long time. So the respect he's showing Harrigan there in parting with it is extremely high.

The reasons behind why a predator (Yautja) chooses to kill or not kill is 100% based on honor. There is more lore than is explained in the films very clearly that explains how this works. The Yautja hunt to become the most efficient hunters/killers in the galaxy. You can't really do that if you're just shooting fish in a barrel. The greater the threat, the greater honor gained from the kill and more knowledge to make them more efficient. Skinned and hung prey show low/no honor in the kills and they served more out of necessity. When the Yautja takes a skull, it means the prey gave them a challenge and allowed them to gain honor either from difficulty or by standing their ground. This also feeds into why they won't shoot prey that don't have projectile weapons, or kill anything that is unarmed. There is zero honor in it and the rest of the clan is watching the hunt. Their actions are being observed both for the purpose of honor, and for the other Yautja to learn. This is why the predator in the first film fought Dutch hand to hand at the end. Dutch had no armor and no weapons but was a very worthy opponent. To claim his trophy and the honor he had coming, he'd have to fight Dutch with fisticuffs. Do we humans display 5th place or participation trophies? Not typically. But we do show off 1st place trophies and college degrees and medals we've earned. This is the purpose the skulls serve from honorable kills. This particular Yautja picked Harrigan as his primary game. Everything the city hunter did in Predator 2 served to prepare and make Harrigan a more formidable and dangerous prey, earning the city hunter great honor. The Yautja at the end may or may not have respected Harrigan, but there was no reason to kill him. The hunt was over. The prey won. It was between Harrigan and the city hunter and that's it. They would have gained nothing by murdering him mindlessly. I've loved the Predator franchise for 30 years. Always great to see new fans. :)
Also, sorry about the longwinded comment. I know I come off as arrogant at times with this stuff. I just can't help myself. I get so excited seeing new people get into the Predator series. Greatest extraterrestrial ever created.

The novelization gives great back lore to the movie; Golden Angel/Greyback was actually fed up with City Hunter's antics and was about to send Stalker to get him. (Stalker has one of the best skin patterns in all of Predator lore; looks like a bengal tiger). But then Harrigan and CH landed on the ship.
They also ruined the lore of the flintlock by shoehoring it into Prey, which really wasn't necessary. A movie about how the Golden Angel got the gun and the following hunts he went on would make a fantastic movie.
