The predator aka Yautja not much information is given in the movies you can get more of that from the comics but I'll let you in on some of the stuff about them below if you see them hunting alone that means there blooded they've killed a Queen alien from the movie alien or something strong from a different planet. If you have a gun they'll use their long-range weapons. If you us close quarters weapons they'll do the same. They're honorable. shooting is actually considered dishonorable but it's fair game is you do it. They don't kill pregnant species because they want more of you to be there when they come back to hunt. If you are a challenge they take your skull 💀 if you suck they skin you and hang you upside down for humiliation I guess. If you beat them they self-destruct so you don't get their technology they even give you a countdown to run. Now this predator the city predator name is ghost he was over confident and was going ape shit the other predators came there to get him because he was doing too much lol the more weapons you see on a predator the higher skill.
That leader predator that you saw at the end that's greyback he's a leader of an elite crew of predators he fought with a pirate named captain Raphael Adolini a long time ago on the comics that pirate gave greyback his gun. And yes alien and predator from the same universe.
But the girl killed the Predator in Prey. Which means another Predator came down at some point and either killed her and took it, or she gave it to them.
@@thomasdoscher6555 In reality, although in Prey they wanted to pay tribute to this film by showing the weapon, they did so without knowing the origin that they had already canonically established for this weapon. The canonical story is as follows if you wish to read it: In 1718 , the flintlock pistol was owned by Captain Raphael Adolini , who with his crew had arrived on the coasts of Guinea to deliver a treasure to the church, however the crew did not have the same plans. The crew turned against him, trying to kill Raphael Adolini to obtain the treasure but he was much more agile and faster, killing several pirates with his flintlock pistol. As the humans fought, a silent Yautja watched from deep within the jungle, but for the second confrontation, Golden Angel emerged from hiding to join the battle and fight back to back with Adolini, slaughtering the crew with her extendable sword. After supposedly killing the entire crew, Raphael and Golden Angel were about to end this battle with a sword fight, but hidden in the bushes, one of the pirates had survived and managed to shoot Raphael in the back. Golden Angel, furious at the theft of his trophy, mercilessly killed the pirate using his plasmacaster and then turned to the fallen Adolini, who with his last breath of life handed him his pistol accompanied by the phrase "Take it." Golden Angel received the weapon and to give Adolini an honorable end, he buried him in the sand along with the treasure that caused all this, leaving his extendable sword as a symbol of respect for
Not only was it shot in LA, they were allowed to actually land a helicopter in the streets of LA, and Danny Glover actually dropped off a 10-story building on a descender rig for the chasing the Predator sequence. No CGI.
Yes that’s true I think it was the last movie that has no CGI because CGi wasn’t invented until Jurassic Park and T2 the next couple years so everything in this movie was real that’s why I love it
@@adriel88_ There was CGI before Jurassic Park but it was pretty limited. Super Mario Bros (93) came out a few months before and was insanely important (because it was the first non ILM CGI of any import and shows how far ahead ILM was) but you had T2 abut also the Abyss (the water tentacle was the prep for the T1000 and was '89) and the glass knight was back in '85. So it was around just rare and had to be used in very specific ways not to break the story.
It was pre-Matrix 90s, of course there's no CGI. If you want to see how badly that turned out when they tried it, look at Lawnmower Man, and consider that it came out 2 years after Predator 2. Jurassic Park was a *very* rare exception where CGI was used well in the 90s. Even post-2000 it wasn't reliably even half-decent (see the Matrix movies after the first).
If I remember correctly Predators are drawn to places of conflict because that's where you tend to find warriors and thus the worthiest opponents so it seems quite likely they'd be attracted to an ongoing gang war. Predators are about the challenge and glory but they adhere to a code as you saw with the pregnant cop, the unarmed people and the victor of the battle. If you're not a threat or a worthy opponent they'll basically pass you by because there's no self preservation or glory in it for them. Tbh, as sad as it is they actually have better ethics than a lot of humans. 😅
They're just using the same general rules we have for hunting. We use camouflage and advanced weaponry to hunt animals, but most developed nations have limits on what you can hunt. No infants, no females during mating season cause obviously they might be pregnant, etc. Now of course the Predator will have additional rules since a lot of the things they hunt are intelligent so they'll have rules like no killing anyone unable to defend themselves. That'd be like us hunting a wolf with no teeth or claws.
That and it also makes it a lot easier to conceal their activites to a certain degree, by going into active war zones where atrocities and killing could just be blamed on the enemy.
@@Hal2718 Good point and definitely a lot of similarities. Unfortunately, belonging to a family of hunters I've heard of those rules being violated several times (not by my then-family though) and I think that'd be extremely severely punished in their society more than ours because of the weight they seem to place on honour.
Giving him the gun was to emphasize how long they'd been visiting Earth and the Alien skull was to show they hunt everywhere across the galaxy/universe.
It was a gift to a fellow powerful warrior. The Predator society is all about combat and killing the most powerful beings possible. Since he killed a predator they recognize him on their level and gave him the gun. The gun came from a pirate that helped a predator fight off a bunch of things and he gifted it to the predator.
@@OfficialMediaKnights: I dunno. The first "Predator" was pretty brutal, given what it did to Dutch's team especially, Mac, Dillon and Dillon's arm. Other Bill Paxton movies you could react to: "Near Dark," "Tombstone," "Nightcrawlers," "Apollo 13," "Edge of Tomorrow," "A Simple Plan" & "Trespass," an action movie about 2 firefighters who go on a treasure hunt and cross paths with gangsters played by Ice-T & Ice Cube.
The Xenomorph skull originally in this movie was a tribute since both franchises were created by Fox. The real reason why it was in the film is because: "In the climax of the film, we see the Xenomorph skull in the trophy cabinet. This wasn’t in the script. As Hopkins was touring Stan Winston’s studio, he saw the xenomorph skulls on Winston’s wall and said “We have to have that in the movie”. He quickly storyboarded it in there. Fox wanted to cut it out but Hopkins fought to keep it." But because of it it spawned the “what if” then Dark Horse comics who had the rights to the IPs created the series Aliens vs Predator. It wasn’t until years later they decided to make it into the movie. The Aliens vs Predator series is not conical to the Alien universe. So it was THIS movie that spawned the what if.
I remember when that first game dropped on the SNES, and it was GOOD. (an opinion, I know) Also Murtaugh really should've told Riggs what he'd damn done gone damn did go through before they met. I think it would've helped their bonding, build their relationship. Gary Busey has always been either evil or sincerely stupid, so there's continuity here.
Wrong. The Dark Horse comic predated Predator, it was releasing in 1989, Predator 2 came out in 1990. The skull was put on set by one of the SWS people as nod to the comics that were already coming out at that time.
It also doesn't really mean that xenomorphs exists in the predator world since prey retcon aliens vs predator despite people debating about it which they don't look at the movie closely.
i love that you guys figured out the "honor" code part of not killing kids and pregnant ladies. the predator lore goes so deep. so much deeper than the movies ever explore.
Fun fact about the flintlock is that the original story behind it was in a comic called predator:1718 (I believe) where a pirate captain is mutinied by his crew on an island and try to kill him, but the predator(elder) sees him and helps him. Afterwards the captain is fatally wounded and gives his flintlock to the predator, which is why in the movie when he says, take it in a different voice it’s because that’s what the pirate captain said to him before he died, but not a lot of people knew that story, so that’s why they decided to include it in prey so that way there could be a connection.
That comic is what prey should've been. I enjoyed prey right up until they revealed the gun in their half-assed attempt to connect to the rest of the series. Really killed it for me.
Right that mofo was hidden and he would've survived and he decided to waste his one shot not on this alien being but his captain fatality wounding him lol.
The Predator is a hunter. (In fact, in a later sequel, characters remark that "Hunter" would make a better nickname for him than "Predator.") It's a custom among hunters as old as hunting itself that a hunter does not claim prey that is in the reproductive process. That is pregnant, nursing or copulating. Part of the reason might be chivalry, but it's more about making sure there will be game to hunt next season.
When I learned how to hunt growing up in Louisiana, one of the primary lessons was that you never shoot females, only males. Bucks, never does. You shoot does, you impair the reproductive ability to repopulate, which is why it's forbidden.
This. I hear a lot of people use the word "honor" for the predator, but it's not really honor. It's just a code, which is not the same thing. Predators exhibit a variety of classic game hunter codes, which include, like mentioned above, not killing pregnant prey. There's also a significant and obvious "match the weapon of the enemy" sort of code, which is pretty typical for a "test of skill/strength" - so, heavily armed enemies are allowed to be killed by heavy weapons, whereas prey that faces down with just melee or barehand have to be matched, otherwise it's a cowardly kill. But the "alpha" target, the goal seems to be to whittle down the alpha from it's absolute strongest to it's most basic - like dutch - take away his team, take away his guns and explosives - leave him with nothing but hand to hand, then face him down face to face, fist to fist.
Danny Glover is just under 6' 4". The Predator and the older Leader in the ending were played by the same actor who played the Predator in the first movie. The rest of the predators were played by LA Lakers NBA players.
Fun Fact: The Predator race are called the Yautja. In the Darkhorse comics the Yautja have had a relationship with the xenomorphs from Aliens for a long time. They consider the xenomorphs to be the ultimate prey to hunt as they are so deadly. The Yautja will purposefully seed planets with xenomorphs to basically turn said planets into hunting reserves. It is a right of passage for young Yautja hunters to kill a xenomorph.
I still can’t believe that Fox didn’t pull from the dark horse comics when they decided to finally make alien versus predator movies. They had all that brilliant source material sitting right there. And then we ended up with those two garbage films because of it.
I believe the Xenomorph skull was a fun nod to the Alien v Predator comics that were out then. For years I had noticed it in theaters, but nobody would believe me about that Easter Egg in the movie, not until DVDs were out, really.
The movie was released in 1990 but it was filmed in 89, the comics came out in Oct of 89 which would make it impossible for the comics to influence the film It is also stated that "In the climax of the film, we see the Xenomorph skull in the trophy cabinet. This wasn’t in the script. As Hopkins was touring Stan Winston’s studio, he saw the xenomorph skulls on Winston’s wall and said “We have to have that in the movie”. He quickly storyboarded it in there. Fox wanted to cut it out but Hopkins fought to keep it." That's why it was in the film and not because of the comic
"And that thing is massive... look at how broad it's shoulders are!" The actor who played the Predator in both the original and Predator 2 was Kevin Peter Hall. He was 7'2" tall and a former basketball player. He was chosen for his height, because they needed to sell that this was a big friggin' monster when he was in scenes with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and his athleticism, because they needed him to do most of his own stunts in the suit (it's very hard to find stunt actors who are 7 feet tall.)
Yeah I think his performance is underrated. Especially in the first movie. There is something about the way he moves as the predator that stands out to me from other actors that have played a Predator. Also fun fact.. a lot of people don't realize that he was the helicopter pilot at the end of Predator.
@@KrushgrooveOG In the first movie, they actually had Jean Claude Van Damme playing the predator at first, but he got mad about the project and quit. Some of the scenes are actually JCVD in the costume from before he left, but he claimed the movie was stupid and didn't want to be associated with it, which is why his name's not in the credits.
@@a-blivvy-yus yeah, I know the whole entire story.. one of his shots in camouflage still remains in the movie. Everyone on set has different versions of what happened. . But Bill Dukes version collaborates JCVD's version of events. Anyway The stuff/scenes..I'm talking about ..is clearly the new design with Kevin Peter Hall...and I saw it ia making of DVD 20 years ago. I really liked the dude since he was in the TV show Misfits of Sciences. It's Just sad what happened in his personal life. Anyway..just Thank goodness they brought in Stan Winston to redesign the Predator.. because that original JCVD predator suit 😬....
Fun Fact: While the movie was filmed on location, the scene with King Willy was shot in an alley in a very dangerous part of town. There were needles and garbage everywhere and the neighbours threw bottles and literal shit at the crew while filming because they were fed up. But the big thing was they actually found a dead body among the trash one day and had to shut everything down for cops.
This blew me away when i saw this in 1990......one of the few sequels that easily equalled the original! I remember people complaining LA would never be that violent 7 years later then a couple of years later the LA riots took place!
The alien skull was a direct result of a Dark Horse comic series featuring the alien vs Predator concept in the late 80s into the 90s. Loved this movie when it came out. Remember seeing it 8 times in the theater with friends. Ahh the good old days. Great review guys.
Giving him the gun was sort of a gesture of respect. If you look close, in addition to the ALIEN skull there was also the understructure of a Triffid, which shows these creatures hunt on many different worlds.
It's a good genre sequel. Hard to follow that first film but this film did a lot to expand the repertoire and lore of the Predator universe and it has great atmosphere and some really well shot set pieces. They had so much to play with from here on and apart from Prey, it's mostly been thrown away.
Delightful reaction y'all. I especially liked how you both were actually paying attention and piecing stuff together, it's always fun to see folks get into the movies like that. While "Predator 2" wasn't as well-received as the first movie, I still enjoy this one immensely for what it is and for how it expanded on Yautja (The actual name of their species) lore and technology. So that being said, let's touch on a few details. As you both have probably figured out, the Predators do have something of a code-of-honor that they follow while on hunts; rules to govern what is and isn't acceptable. That being said, the following things are considered against their laws/taboo: Killing unarmed prey, killing children and pregnant women, and certain sickly prey are likewise off-limits; though the latter two rules can be waived if the forbidden prey in question are armed and trying to harm the Predator(s) hunting them. They're also very protective of their technology when it comes to it possibly falling into the hands of prey-species like humans, which is part of the reason why they'll self-destruct if too badly injured or otherwise facing the risk of their tech being recovered. As others have pointed out, the xenomorph skull was basically a nod to the ALIEN franchise, but by this point there was already a comic-book series put out by Dark Horse that started back in 1989; one year prior to this movie. Fun fact: The Predators not only actively seed worlds with xenomorphs and hunt them for sport, but it's considered a rite-of-passage for entering adult-hood; which of course means better hunts and better gear to use. These rite-of-passage hunts end with the successful newbies getting "blooded", in other words marked using the acid-blood of slain xenomorphs. At the end, the Elder predator gave Danny Glover that pistol as a show of respect, and possibly as a subtle warning that he hasn't seen the last of them. Their race knows strength and skill when they see it and respect it accordingly, so if you can take down one of them in "fair and honorable" combat, they'll acknowledge you and show due respect. Going back to the comics and novels for a moment, there's one instance where a woman named Machiko Noguchi ended up fighting side-by-side with a veteran Predator in a colony that had been overrun by xenomorphs. For her efforts, destroying an entire hive and scoring a kill on a Queen, she got "blooded" and the chance to go hunting with the Predators; which she took.
@OfficialMediaKnights question when you guy going watch more predator moive or whe you will watch one with alien and predator I guss I am also wonder what your realse scheduleds is?
Bro, when you said homeboy during the shoot-out, was putting gym powder on himself, I almost spit out my drink laughing. I remember my younger sister asking my dad when we watched this with him as kids what that white stuff was that the dude was splashing his face and shoulders with, and my dad said it was gym powder. "Oh, he's using that powder for better grip, of his gun's." Lol. This movie is a pretty worthy sequel to the first movie, regardless of some of the Predator mystique having been taken away since you went in kind of already knowing what to expect. The movie did manage to add a few things to the mythos that would stick around in future movies and expanded media up to today, so the movie is pretty significant.
Most of the movies I think are worth a watch. The only one I think is bad is The Predator. Predators and Prey I think are decent. Not as good as Predator 2 and OBVIOUSLY not anywhere close to the original, but I say they're worth a watch. AVP franchise is a whole other can of worms that I personally don't include when talking about the Predator franchise 🤷
At the time this movie was released, giving him the gun at the end was a cool indication showing the Predators have interacted with humans for hundreds of years. It was awesome the included the gun in Prey. It was a nice connection of the time periods and history in the movies.
Remember that while you knew the gun from Prey that this film came decades earlier and was the first time the gun was shown. Seeing it in Prey was a callback to this film as well as indicating that at some point after Prey the owner of that gun was killed by a Yautja (predator species), possibly the same one that gives the gun to the MC here as they seem to have an extended lifespan. The MC was given the gun because he defeated a Yautja in single combat according to their rules of engagement. Speaking of those rules of engagement, the Yauja are not only concerned about if someone is armed. They care if an intelligent target is armed and combative. They are also concerned with hierarchies like you mentioned in your reaction. They went after the Columbian gang because they were dominant at the start of the film. Then they went after the Jamaicans in the apartment who were doing their own form of dominance game against the Columbian's leader. Danny was killed because he went up to recover the blade, and the Yautja are big on cleaning up after themselves. Then it was King Willie's turn. Only then was the MC's team stalked, with Leona being spared because her being pregnant meant killing her would also kill a noncombatant.
If memory serves me correctly, the xeno skull was there as an Easter egg/ favor between friends in the prop dept. They wanted unique trophies to make the Predators seem more formidable, and in cinema, what's more formidable than a Xenomorph. Outside of a Queen Xenomorph.
For more Gary Busey, check out Point Break (1991), also starring a very young Keanu Reeves. He plays a fresh FBI agent, with Busey as his aging partner, and Keanu has to go undercover to find out who's responsible for a wave of bank robberies.
The Alien skull in the trophy room was originality meant as an easter egg for fans since 20th Century Fox owned both franchises at the time. Not realizing that they would create a new franchise with both creatures.
The old flintlock pistol was that Predator's way of letting him know they've been around a long time. An explanation of sorts, as a show of respect for him surviving.
At the time I took that to mean that the flintlock belonged to the last human to defeat one of their hunters. Like, "here, take this memento to remember us by. Good job (...you A-hole)." I figure that Dutch doesn't count since the nuclear blast meant that no trophies survived to be passed down as heirlooms.
The Yautja (predator’s) are a race that value honour and strength among all things. So after Harrigan(Danny Glover) defeated the “City Hunter” Predator in was essentially single combat the other clan members let him live out of respect for his victory over their fallen clansmen. The flintlock pistol was both a Easter egg nod to the comic as well as a tell tale of how long the Yautja have been coming to earth to perform their “Hunts” the Xenomorph skull was just an Easter egg to the only other sci fi baddie that made a noticeable impression on audiences(as mentioned by previous commenters)
If I remember correctly Predators are drawn to places of conflict because that's where you tend to find warriors and thus the worthiest opponents so it seems quite likely they'd be attracted to an ongoing gang war. Predators are about the challenge and glory but they adhere to a code as you saw with the pregnant cop, the boy with the toy gun, the unarmed civilians and the victor of the battle. If you're not a threat or a worthy opponent they'll basically pass you by because there's no self preservation or glory in it for them. If I'm honest, as sad as it is they actually have better ethics than a lot of humans. 😅 Giving the him the gun was emphasize how long the Predators (Yautja) been visiting Earth and the Alien skull was to show that they hunt other worthy adversary across the universe/galaxies.
At 23:47 when you asked "Does a Predator have morals?" They kind of do, in a sense. They have an honor code that they have to abide by strictly when on a hunt or in general. One of the many rules is that they can't take a life of someone/something connected to another life. They also can't kill the old, the sick, or children as they are not worthy prey.
You guys had missed the part where Keys (Gary Busey) had told Harrigan (Danny Glover) how they rigged the sprinkler system with some kind of dust that would stick to the predator to keep him visible, it wasn't the water. Secondly, everything is a "hunters game" with the predators. Skulls are their trophy if they complete a successful kill & for humans is something they give to you if he beats the predator in the hunting game
Alfred-"Will they return, Sir?" Batman -"They won't. Not now that they've met what lives in Gotham" From the excellent (first) Batman vs Predator comics. Highly recommend!
One of 2 of my favorite sequels to any franchise!! So, the reason there were so many Yautja (Predator) was for the youngling blooding. They were different clans and their young ones earning their clan marking. Killing a Yautja warrior earns the respect of the Yautja clans. The gun at the end was Harrigan's trophy for defeating the young warrior. Btw, the zenomorph skull does elude to their place in the Alien/Predator universe. I can't wait for you to see AVP!! It'll answer many questions. Great reaction guys! Ari, very savvy as always and Denise is brilliant and gorgeous as always!! Love it!! Cheers!!
"I need some of that gym powder" -Ari ...lmao i love how these older movies just go straight to the action. The director and writers known that people are going to see an action flick and they just provide from begining to end.
6:31 Fun fact: Henry Kingi, the stunt performer doing this fall, also died at the start of the original. He's the dude that jumps into the truck 'Dutch' lifts.
He was also in "Car Wash": I forget his character's name, but he's the one wearing the mouse hat. He also was/is married to The Bionic Woman! (Dammit, I forget her name!)
Kevin Peter Hall played main predator in both Predator movies. He was also bigfoot, Harry, in Harry and the Hendersons. R.I.P. Kevin Peter Hall, we miss you.
Film is fun to watch for sure and has some great moments and lore expansion, but I can't help myself but notice that they started to degrade Predators from this film after. I mean, Harrigan here acts in the very same way Mac did in the original Predator... and we all know how it ended... They did not let mindless rush for revenge to overcome the hunter in the 1st film, so that we knew that the Predator is smarter and just plays with them like a matador. But then they let it pass in the 2nd film and...it felt like this 2nd hunter is simply not that good. And with each new film this felling only grew stronger [at least for me].
From the Predator saga you have a third one with Adrien Brody called Predators, from 2010 and Predator: Prey from 2022. And there is another one called: Alien vs Predator, but of dubious quality I would say, hahaha ! more B class I would say.@@OfficialMediaKnights
The gun was a "related/familiar" trophy... If you win a good fight... you get a trophy in their culture. And yes... Predator 2 took the bold step of implying the Aliens universe is in the same universe as Predator... something that films never did in this time. The comics took this information and went to town... then video games and then the films. Ridley Scott however hated this... and created Prometheus to rewrite it to say otherwise... however true fans of the franchise actually disregard Ridley Scott's Prometheus and Covenant and only see them as "Alternative Lore". Predator 2 was a great sequel to Predator... something that would of been hard to acheive and really boosted the Aliens and Predator franchise.
In a way that's good - because if it was Dutch - there would be less room for Danny Glovers character. You'd be expecting Arnold to kick butt and the not listening to warnings etc and dying cut in half would not really match the character.
@@prltqdf9well once Arnold turned it down..some changes were made to the Keyes character and evolved into something else. So idk if he was going to get killed the same way as Keyes. The main reason he turned it down was to do Terminator 2.
@@OfficialMediaKnights there's a book called Predator: Concrete Jungle which is basically a rework of this movie. In that the main protagonist (other than our masked mandibular friend) is a cop called Schaefer...who it turns out is Dutch's brother. Phillips, the general from the first movie, also features in the book.
Another fun fact about the trophy wall is almost all of the skulls subtly make nods or references to other movies. That first huge skull you see on the left was a random conceptual design that was later used as the basic design for the skull of the Kothoga, the monster from the movie The Relic which Stan Winston also did the special effects for.
In the lore, when someone defeated a Yautja (Predator), they became a de facto Predator, which meant that any members of that "clan" or "tribe" of Predators accepted him as a "worthy hunter". The pistol was given to Mike Harrigan as a "gift" by the Elder Yautja, recognizing that fact. Yautja almost NEVER relinquish a trophy. hence the casual "Take it." when he tossed the pistol to Harrigan. The Yautja in this film was portrayed asa more "juvenile" member of the species, hence the reason he was so reckless regarding whether or not he was seen. (teenagers always have a "it can't happen to me" attitude, and it is also reflected in the somewhat juvenile style of the mindgames he plays when hunting. He's "having fun." Yes, this film establishes the fact that both the Yautja (Predators) and the Xenomorphs (Aliens) were a part of the same universe, and established the canon that would lead to the eventual "Aliens vs. Predators" movie in 2004. In the movie canon, up to that point, there have been 3 "Worthy Hunters" so far. The first was Dutch in the original film (1987), the second was Mike Harrigan in "Predator 2" (1994) and the third was the character Alexa Woods in "Aliens vs. Predators", (2004). In lore and the comics, there have been many other "Worthy Hunters", and I suppose we could also consider the character, Naru, a "Worthy Hunter" because she did survive in "Prey", 2022. Fun Fact #1: The Elder Yautja in the end scene was actually the original costume from the 1987 film, and was retextured by the Stan Winston Creature Shop to make it look older. The Stan Winston Creature shop made the original Predator creature, including all of the animatronics used to articulate the mandibles on the Yautja faces. Fun Fact #2: Peter Cullen - the voice of the original Optimus Prime (Transformers) was also the man who voiced the eerie clicks growls of the Yautja. ua-cam.com/video/gpjhI-eRE6c/v-deo.html Sorry for the long comment. Great review guys! These first two films are absolute classics, and they made the Yautja my all time favorite bad guy in cinema to this day. Nothing has ever been as good.
The Xenomorph skull was meant to communicate that Alien and Predator share the same universe and it wasstated by the director as meant to show that the Predators do hunt Aliens and would serve as a teaser for the upcoming AVP movie they were planning which was all inspired by the AVP comics which released just before Predator 2.
I think way Predator following Danny Glover around is because he is the lion in the jungle, he is the biggest price. And like a hunter he wants to study him, learn his weaknesses and observe. And the Predator only kills those who opposing a threat to him
The "Raphael Adolini 1715" gun holds profound symbolism, signifying the extraterrestrial visitors' longstanding engagement in Earth's history as hunters. Its historical designation suggests a lineage of these otherworldly visitors coming to Earth on a recurring 'safari' spanning centuries. By giving the gun to Hannigan, they acknowledge him as a victor, implying that he has successfully reclaimed it, marking a symbolic triumph for humanity after it was once taken from them. This artifact becomes a testament to the enduring battle between humans and these cosmic hunters, emphasising the significance of this ongoing struggle in the broader context of Earth's history.
Do remember that Predator 2 was made _before_ Prey. The significance of the gun in Prey is that it's a callback to the one in Predator 2. It isn't necessarily any deeper than that.
I love your reactions more than most of the reaction videos I've seen. You have a great technical review as well as fan review mixed in one. And you don't drone on with theories, you react to what you see. I love that!
Best soundtrack of the entire saga. Silvestri rules in this movie and Stephen Hopkins himself did a freaking great job. Predator 2 is too much underrated and deserve more.
To answer the question, am sure you have got comments on it, 40:30 it was a xenomorph skull, the director just did it as a nod to the aliens movies, not knowing it would start a whole movement (pre-social media) for the alien vs predator movie for years to come. Also Keyes was suppose to be Dutch, but Arnold turned it down for several reasons, the main one being him dying, he was still a big time star at that time, wouldn't have made since.
Apparently the guy playing the character named "The Scorpion" who is killed and falls off the roof was actually a well known stuntman at the time the film was made. I think it's nice that he actually got to be seen on screen for once in a decent role.
Predator 2 and Robocop 2 usually get poopooed on but honestly they have some awesome practical visuals along with being just good fun. the ones after tho the part threes and so on not so much : P
We haven't seen the Robocop movies yet, but we did enjoy this sequel for Predator! It was different, entertaining and fun - sometimes that's exactly what a movie needs to be!
@@OfficialMediaKnights cant wait, youse guys are gonna really dig the Verhoeven trilogy, also alien vs predator was a couple games before the movies. the Capcom AvP arcade side scrolling 2d beat'em up was utter perfection and blew are minds back then. still love it so much : D
People say this was a bad movie, but I don't see what the issue is. You got Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Bill Paxton (may he rest in peace), and Adam Baldwin. And on top of that, this 2nd Predator (City Hunter) is also played Kevin Peter Hall (May he ALSO rest in peace) just like the Jungle Hunter from the first one.
So backstory about the flint lock pistol from the comics. The pirate who owned the pistol was in a confrontation with that leader predator, but in the middle of their battle the pirate captains crew staged a mutiny and tried killing both of them. So for brief moment the predator and captain stood side by side. But unfortunately the captain was killed by the crew mates and his last words to the predator was “take it” as he gave the predator his pistol.
(At 43:02) also, this elder or veteran Predator is called Grayback, and he is *also* played by Kevin Peter Hall. So like the first one Kevin Peter Hall plays two different characters on Predator 2.
If your going release order, Alien 3 is next. I urge you to watch the Assembly Cut of the movie. If your going next Predator movie, it would be Alien vs Predator technically in the story. Please don’t make us wait a year 😂😂 Each Predator movie explains more about them, including the Alien vs Predator movies. The Alien/Predator universe has a lot of in depth lore covering both species in not just the movies, but games, comics, novels and other licensed source materials that fans of the franchise will happily help explain. This lore covers everything from Alien breeding and caste system, to Predators hunting code, clans and technology. The official name of the two species are also revealed with Predators being called Yautja, and Aliens being called Xenomorphs. The expanded media covers their history and relationship with each other, humans, Earth and other planets.
On the Alien Skull...from what I read and remember, the skull was an unfinished, unpainted, Alien head that didn't get used in Aliens (1996). So as a nod, and as a inside joke, that our alien beat your alien, someone working for the props department, sneaked that into the set design. The scene was then shot, edited, and made it's way onto the final theatrical version of the movie without anyone noticing. But audiences in theaters caught it, as well on the easily, pauseable and reverseable VHS audiences. That blew everyone's minds, just like you two, and created the fire to see their two favorite aliens do battle onscreen. Unfortunately because the properties for both franchises where owned by separate studios, they were never in agreement on how to make a crossover happen. They couldn't agree on a script, financing, distribution, advertising, etc etc. The only way to see them together was in a series of Predator comics by Dark Horse Comics, and various video games. And that remained that way until they figured out an agreement for the 2004 release of Alien vs Predator. So no, these two franchises were never supposed to crossover. They were two totally different projects, in totally different movie universes. But now, because of several crossover movies, a lot of newer audiences think that these two were always linked.
Saw this in the theater - first one is best but this one is solid and entertaining. So lore wise, 1st movie released in 87. In 1989, Dark Horse comics releases a really great limited series called Aliens vs Predator. And you were right as you mentioned in another video - in the comic, hunting a Xenomorph is a coming of age ritual for the Predators. Hence the skull appearing a year later in Predator 2 was a great easter egg for fans (as before the comic, there was no connection between both franchises). Sadly, any of the two versus movies they made matching up both creatures are not as great as the comic series. At this point, you have seen the best three movies. Side note - you mentioned the score. When Glover goes to Danny's grave, the musical queue is the queue from the first movie when Mac's is sitting with Blaine's body in the body bag and saying goodbye. A great callback.
Yep, I saw this in theaters too, but I was so young that the subway scene scared me that my dad took me out of the theater. I love the original AvP Novel, I have it on paper back and graphic novel.
I read a long time ago that this particular predator was young but slightly older than the one that Arnold fought. As a predator becomes more capable, they will hunt in increasingly more dangerous places and/or prey. Humans are a priced hunt for young predators because of our intelligence. But for all we know, there are far, far more dangerous, cthulhu type creatures they hunt in other galaxies. Too add, I also read that the ones Arnold and Danny fought would be in the human equivalent of their mid to late teens.
It was my understanding that the one from the original Predator was a more seasoned hunter due to the less weapons and more remote location. The Predator from 2 had more weapons and being in a city with a higher population had more prey to hunt. I think that's why there was the rest of the group of Predators there as well. Not necessarily there to hunt but to observe while that Predator trained further into hunting. The Predator from 1 was there by itself.
At the end of the 'Prey' movie they show a drawing of the predator ship howering over the village. I am pretty sure some other predator came for the girl, finally killed her and took the antique pistol as a trophy since she was a great warrior. Later the predators gave the same pistol to Danny Glover's character as a mark of respect since he single handedly killed one of their own.
I like predator 2 slightly more than the first one actually 🤷 also I still recommend Jeepers Creepers 1&2 for you guys, will not be disappointed but go in blind 👉❤️🙏
The irony of equating the Predator to Thor during the lightning bolt scene. Marvel now owns the Alien franchise, which means we're likely to see an MCU Alien/Predator crossover sometime in the future. ;D
My brother and I freaked out when we saw the Xeno skull at the end of this back in the 90s, well before and AvP movies were out. Unfortunately, the AvP movies are not very good - they really missed an opportunity with them.
Glad to see this movie get more appreciation as the years have gone by. Danny Glovers casting was ahead of its time, back then the action stars were your Stallone's, Van Damme's, Seagal, Arnolds etc..etc. I also recall folks rolling their eyes at "old guy" from Lethal Weapon. Glover was 10 years younger than his character Murtaugh in LW and aged up w/ some grey etc. Glover was around 42 when he filmed Predator 2 and 6'3 and as he ssid the best shape of his career. Anyway its my second favorite Predator film with Prey a close 3rd.
“This material doesn’t correspond to anything on the Periodic Table.” I hate this trope in movies. “I can’t even theorize how this material was made. The arrangement of elements in it’s molecular structure is unheard of and should be impossible. No known technique or technology on this planet could make this stuff. Where in the hell did you get it?” Love your reactions and can’t wait for you to keep watching movies!
It was only ever the one. That was his clan members. Once you defeat one of there own there is a hands off code that is abided by. The gun was a trophy the clan leader offered up for Harrigan's victory.
In the first one when Arnold Get the mud and the Predator is chasing him, he fall in the water and the cammo fails. So yes the water makes he cant be invisible
In the lore, Ghost, the Predator in this film is a Blooded (which is basically a step up from rookie in their culture) compared to Savage, the first Predator. Ghost actually viewed the Savage's logs of his battle against Dutch's team and was amazed at how in the grand scheme of things, they actually won, which is why he came to Los Angeles to hunt Humans who'd proven themselves a worthy species to hunt. It was also his first off-world hunt and why the others held back in the ship. It was to see how he'd do on his own. In fact they were actually getting concerned at just how much reckless killing Ghost was doing. He wasn't breaking any rules as his prey was still dangerous but they were worried at how he was just attacking anything that could remotely fight back, regardless of whether it was a worthy kill or not and Elder Greyback who gave Harrigan the pistol was about to recall him before the final battle. The reason Ghost goes after everyone Harrigan cares about and taunts him with their remains is because he saw that Harrigan had the potential to give him the fight Dutch gave Savage so he just decided to give him the 'proper motivation' to come after it. Ghost got exactly what he wanted.

The predator aka Yautja not much information is given in the movies you can get more of that from the comics but I'll let you in on some of the stuff about them below
if you see them hunting alone that means there blooded they've killed a Queen alien from the movie alien or something strong from a different planet.
That one was better than Predator 2.@rickking228
That leader predator that you saw at the end that's greyback he's a leader of an elite crew of predators he fought with a pirate named captain Raphael Adolini a long time ago on the comics that pirate gave greyback his gun.
And yes alien and predator from the same universe.
Wait until you see Hellraiser

Yes. Bummer.
Well actually lance henriksen can somewhat claim that fact also. Then again I don’t personally classify avp as legit predator movie

.. but they just stole it from muzeum and now making fun of him 😂
But the girl killed the Predator in Prey. Which means another Predator came down at some point and either killed her and took it, or she gave it to them.
@@thomasdoscher6555 In reality, although in Prey they wanted to pay tribute to this film by showing the weapon, they did so without knowing the origin that they had already canonically established for this weapon.
The canonical story is as follows if you wish to read it:
In 1718 , the flintlock pistol was owned by Captain Raphael Adolini , who with his crew had arrived on the coasts of Guinea to deliver a treasure to the church, however the crew did not have the same plans.
Golden Angel, furious at the theft of his trophy, mercilessly killed the pirate using his plasmacaster and then turned to the fallen Adolini, who with his last breath of life handed him his pistol accompanied by the phrase "Take it."
Golden Angel received the weapon and to give Adolini an honorable end, he buried him in the sand along with the treasure that caused all this, leaving his extendable sword as a symbol of respect for
@@thomasdoscher6555 I wouldn't take that as canon.
Not only was it shot in LA, they were allowed to actually land a helicopter in the streets of LA, and Danny Glover actually dropped off a 10-story building on a descender rig for the chasing the Predator sequence. No CGI.
It was partly shot in LA. Filming was also done in Oakland, and the metro scenes were shot on BART in SF.
@@punchnazis3498 Yeah, the map inside the train looked awfully familiar.. 😂
Heat and conflict thats what predators wants
They must've loved Vietnam.
Giving him the gun was to emphasize how long they'd been visiting Earth and the Alien skull was to show they hunt everywhere across the galaxy/universe.
That was going to explain why the reason give him a weapon, I understood it very well, but apparently they don’t understand to explain why.
It was a gift to a fellow powerful warrior. The Predator society is all about combat and killing the most powerful beings possible. Since he killed a predator they recognize him on their level and gave him the gun. The gun came from a pirate that helped a predator fight off a bunch of things and he gifted it to the predator.
Trust in God.😁@@atheist101

@@OfficialMediaKnights: I dunno. The first "Predator" was pretty brutal, given what it did to Dutch's team especially, Mac, Dillon and Dillon's arm.
Other Bill Paxton movies you could react to: "Near Dark," "Tombstone," "Nightcrawlers," "Apollo 13," "Edge of Tomorrow," "A Simple Plan" & "Trespass," an action movie about 2 firefighters who go on a treasure hunt and cross paths with gangsters played by Ice-T & Ice Cube.
It was not great. It was noisy, dumb and nasty for the sake of being nasty.
The Xenomorph skull originally in this movie was a tribute since both franchises were created by Fox. The real reason why it was in the film is because:
"In the climax of the film, we see the Xenomorph skull in the trophy cabinet. This wasn’t in the script. As Hopkins was touring Stan Winston’s studio, he saw the xenomorph skulls on Winston’s wall and said “We have to have that in the movie”. He quickly storyboarded it in there. Fox wanted to cut it out but Hopkins fought to keep it."
But because of it it spawned the “what if” then Dark Horse comics who had the rights to the IPs created the series Aliens vs Predator. It wasn’t until years later they decided to make it into the movie. The Aliens vs Predator series is not conical to the Alien universe. So it was THIS movie that spawned the what if.
I remember when that first game dropped on the SNES, and it was GOOD. (an opinion, I know)
Also Murtaugh really should've told Riggs what he'd damn done gone damn did go through before they met.
That's why Hopkins should have stayed on for the rest of the predator movies since he had good ideas like that one
RIP the legend Bill Paxton, the monster trifecta man! This guy knew how to pick the legendary movies.
I love him the movie Trespass
i love that you guys figured out the "honor" code part of not killing kids and pregnant ladies. the predator lore goes so deep. so much deeper than the movies ever explore.
Yh and the comic did it way better, that story alone was good enough to flesh out into a movie
Probably a good idea to warn about possible spoilers...
Did you like prey?
That comic is what prey should've been. I enjoyed prey right up until they revealed the gun in their half-assed attempt to connect to the rest of the series. Really killed it for me.
Right that mofo was hidden and he would've survived and he decided to waste his one shot not on this alien being but his captain fatality wounding him lol.
I love Danny Glover in this. He's great in the Lethal Weapon movies as well.
yes, Danny Glover golden era
Kevin Peter Hall!
Actually it was a nod to Aliens, it was this movie that spawned the comics. I grew up during all of this and saw this movie in the theaters
@@DarkLarva Yeah, me too, but the comics were already out.
The movie was released in 1990 but it was filmed in 89, the comics came out in Oct of 89 which would make it impossible for the comics to influence the film It is also stated that
"In the climax of the film, we see the Xenomorph skull in the trophy cabinet. This wasn’t in the script. As Hopkins was touring Stan Winston’s studio, he saw the xenomorph skulls on Winston’s wall and said “We have to have that in the movie”. He quickly storyboarded it in there. "Want some candy?" from Predator is one of the creepiest line I've heard.
He went full sexual predator there...
"And that thing is massive... look at how broad it's shoulders are!"
The actor who played the Predator in both the original and Predator 2 was Kevin Peter Hall.
They need Shaq to play a Predator one day 🤣
Yeah I think his performance is underrated.
The more Predator tech that the Yautja use, the younger the Predator. There is lore where elder Predators hunt with just an arm blade.

The alien skull was a direct result of a Dark Horse comic series featuring the alien vs Predator concept in the late 80s into the 90s. Loved this movie when it came out. Remember seeing it 8 times in the theater with friends. Ahh the good old days. Great review guys.
Bill Paxton really ran the gauntlet of being offed by big sci-fi baddies. Got the trifecta

Danny Glover had to fill the shoes of Arnie. He did a good job. This film in my top 20 action movies for sure.
I really love this movie. If the first one is 9 out of 10 this one is atleast an 8 for me.
I really like Danny Glover!
Danny Glover is amazing - and he did fantastic in this! Definitely agree on the rating, 8 is fair!
He parlayed the Lethal Weapon success quite well for an actor hitting that stride later in life.

The reason they don't kill him is, he won a honorable fight against one of their own. They accept him as a warrior and the gun is his trophy
Good job (...you A-hole)."
I figure that Dutch doesn't count since the nuclear blast meant that no trophies survived to be passed down as heirlooms.
This, add in it being a promise that they will return
Alfred-"Will they return, Sir?"
Batman -"They won't. Not now that they've met what lives in Gotham"
From the excellent (first) Batman vs Predator comics. Highly recommend!
Movie reactions are my specialty!!
Haha Bill Paxton...what a legend!
glad you noticed the alien skull on the trophy wall.as for the "- who's next?" line...love it! ❤
Exactly! This was action packed from start to finish! We wanted to see more of the predator and that is exactly what we got.
Since watching The Thing, I think another must watch as filmmakers is Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It's fantastic, creeped me out as a kid so much
"I never thought I'd see a predator inside a subway car."
⬆This line here just made me burst out laughing.⬆
6:31 Fun fact: Henry Kingi, the stunt performer doing this fall, also died at the start of the original. He's the dude that jumps into the truck 'Dutch' lifts.
Nice, that is a fun fact. Thanks!
Such a good sequel. Not as good as the first one, but still a good flick 👍
It had some really cool moments with the Predator!
Film is fun to watch for sure and has some great moments and lore expansion,
but I can't help myself but notice that they started to degrade Predators from this film after.
I mean, Harrigan here acts in the very same way Mac did in the original Predator...
and we all know how it ended...
They did not let mindless rush for revenge to overcome the hunter in the 1st film,
so that we knew that the Predator is smarter and just plays with them like a matador.
But then they let it pass in the 2nd film and...it felt like this 2nd hunter is simply not that good.
And with each new film this felling only grew stronger [at least for me].
Predator 2 is like Robocop 2, without surpassing the originals, they are still well made and entertaining sequels.@@OfficialMediaKnights
In the original script Keys was supposed to be Dutch from part 1 but Arnold turned down the role
No way! Definitely missed Dutch. Would've loved an appearance!
Considering Keys' character and what happened to him I totally understand why Arnold turned down the role.
The gun was the Predator's way of giving Glover a trophy for surviving the hunt.
This film is underrated. I had a huge fanboy moment when I saw the Xeno skull in this when I saw it back in the theater in '90
It was so great to see a cross over film with Roger Murtaugh vs a Predator...Rigs was tied up with another case!
He's "having fun."
Yes, this film establishes the fact that both the Yautja (Predators) and the Xenomorphs (Aliens) were a part of the same universe, and established the canon that would lead to the eventual "Aliens vs.

Sorry for the long comment.
This is probably the most underrated film ever!
I think way Predator following Danny Glover around is because he is the lion in the jungle, he is the biggest price. And like a hunter he wants to study him, learn his weaknesses and observe.
And the Predator only kills those who opposing a threat to him
Rest in peace, and job well done, Kevin Peter Hall... Dutch's recue chopper pilot and Predators 1 and 2.
People in the know.. know. This is a great sequel.
Hell Yeah, it is!
"You know what I believe?.. Shit 'appens" 🤣🤣🤣
Morton Downey Jr. I remember listening to his radio show back in the 80's.
Can't believe you didn't mention what looks like a T-Rex skull too.
Incorrect. It was a nod to the AvP comic done by Dark Horse years earlier. Check the first issues out - damned good stuff.
Apparently the guy playing the character named "The Scorpion" who is killed and falls off the roof was actually a well known stuntman at the time the film was made. I think it's nice that he actually got to be seen on screen for once in a decent role.
22:17 "Wants some candy?" :D
The GOAT'S have done it again!! I didn't think I could LOVE this movie more than I already did!!
Spanx for that compadres
Robocop 2 is trash, but Predator 2 is actually a good sequel.
You two are amazing, keep up the great reactions!
As a fellow Bill Paxon fan I request to please check out Frailty (2001), really great movie that he is in and also directed.
I posted on other movies that they need to watch fraility as well, also identity with cusak
Your shirt. Saw them live in the late 70.80.90, and 2000's!!! Powerful Band❤❤❤!😊
They even give that impression in AVP as the predator in that has that teen 'tude'.
That's what I liked about the plot of "Prey". Both Naru and the Predator are going through a rite of passage to become a warrior in their tribe.
Jeepers Creepers is on our list! Can't wait to check it out 😄
The irony of equating the Predator to Thor during the lightning bolt scene.
Want some candy?😂
This movie is a cheese fest and I love it!!!!👍
Ahahaha it was a loooot of cheese but we enjoyed it 😂
“This material doesn’t correspond to anything on the Periodic Table.” I hate this trope in movies.
“I can’t even theorize how this material was made. The arrangement of elements in it’s molecular structure is unheard of and should be impossible. No known technique or technology on this planet could make this stuff. Where in the hell did you get it?”
Love your reactions and can’t wait for you to keep watching movies!
DANNY BOY.....
Terrifying voice!
Why are you still wearing a mask? And make a captain obvious statement? 😂
Back when 109 degrees seemed like a mostly fictional thing to open a movie on.
😂😂
Great job guys! Don't know any other youtubers that has reacted to it or if you've seen it,but I think you'd like The Last Boy Scout ! An awesome 90's movie!
