Discussing the Nissan Z - The Carmudgeon Show featuring Jason Cammisa and Derek from ISSIMI - Ep. 53

  • There’s a new Z in town and Jason has driven it!
    In this episode of the Carmudgeon Show, award-winning automotive journalist Jason Cammisa and award-deserving automotive encyclopedia Derek Tam-Scott discuss the 2023 Nissan Z. And the Jaguar E-Type. And Bridgestone S007 tires. And Aston Martin Vantages - V8 Vantages with blown engines. And Gordon Murray T.50s.
    Derek takes a turn for the nerdy by pointing out that British tax-horsepower regulations encouraged the tractor-like long-stroke engines that sapped some of the fun out of the 1960s sports cars.
    But not the Fairlady Z432, which Jason thinks might be the best-sounding six-cylinder engine of all time - up there with the Mercedes 300SL “Gullwing.”
    Mostly, though, this episode discusses Z - from the new one back to the original S30 240Z and Fairlady. Including the VR30DDTT engine that originally debuted in the Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 - though it’s derived from the port-injected R35 Nissan GT-R.
    And what episode would be complete without a highly legal street drag race between two BMW E30 325is? Certainly not this one.

    The single "D" in the code for those older engines is for DOHC; compare the VG30E (SOHC, fuel injected) in older Maximas and Z31s, for example, with the VG30DE (DOHC, fuel injected) in the N/A Z32.

    I haven't seen any other press videos note the issues with the Z discussed in this episode. And @14:10 Cammisa nails why the BMW/Toyota partnership was such a good move. Toyota gave us a 52k Supra without up charging for all the R&D $$ that went into developing the BMW components (i.e., the end result is that the Supra doesn't have to go into "limp mode" like the Z, as Cammisa describes). Plus, Toyota did their own reliability testing on the B58. Such a win for Supra owners.

      It absolutely helps when your Toyota and have almost unlimited money and can just toss it at BMW to suss out nearly all the quirks.
      Thankfully nearly all the gripes Jason mentioned are the results of tuning and tires and can probably be resolved in the aftermarket easily enough.
      There is a fuse that can be pulled as well to disable the nanny systems in the Q50/60 so wouldn’t be surprised if the Z has one as well.

      Having had an episode on my ND Miata with the factory Bridgestone S001 tires, I will agree. They’re either on or off with no progression of what the limit is. I’m on PS4S now with coilovers and an “enthusiast” alignment and the difference is incredible.
      Regarding RE-71R’s, I’ve had those on my old Mk5 GTI and as an autox setup for the ND. Unfortunately they’re not made anymore and the closest successor are the RT-660’s. Yes, they are coming out with the RE-71RS, but it’s a different performing tire from what I’ve seen.
      Any 200TW tire is going to be very loud, ride harder, and wear faster and not be as good in the rain as the Conti Extreme Contact Sport and Michelin PS4S. The top tire in the 200TW category if money is no object are arguably the Yokohama ADVAN A052.

    VR30DDTT engines do NOT have blowoff/bypass valves to vent intake manifold pressure when you close the throttle. So the ECM is programmed to actuate the throttle valve in abnormal ways to compensate not having blowoff valve kinda letting the intake manifold pressure bleed off into the throttle. There still great engines. But maybe this explains what Jason is experiencing with the throttle.

    The BRZ/GR86 is "sedan based" as well. Shares quite a few components with imprezas.
    Is the new Z4 sharing a floor pan/suspension with anything other than the Supra? Haven't looked into that.

    • @pkennethv
      @pkennethv 2 роки тому +3

      I think you may have a different "standard" or "threshold" of what is considered "platform sharing" compared to what most auto journalists / reviewers have. I acknowledge that the line is somewhat arbitrary, so I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong - only saying your standards are different from what is "widely accepted" (rightly or wrongly) by the rest of the automotive world.
      The new Z4/Supra literally use some suspension components from the M2, yet the "automotive world" (BMW, and journalists / reviewers) consider the Z4 to be different enough to the M2 to consider it a different/unique "platform" to the M2/2 Series. The M2 is considered to be "based on a sedan platform" whereas the Z4 is not. (in other words, the M2 is more similar to a 3 Series than it is to the Z4)
      From a developmental standpoint, I believe BMW created the Z4 main chassis from scratch, then took existing parts from the M2 and bolted them onto the "new chassis."
      (I believe this was to meet stiffness & weight goals)
      I'm 90% sure (if my memory serves me correctly), only the first gen BRZ early test mules were modified Impreza platforms. These were the cars that Subaru showed to Toyota early on the demo/developmental stages for Toyota's approval. But the actual final/production 2013 BRZs are, in similar fashion to the Z4, a new, unique chassis with existing Impreza parts bolted on to it.
      So "parts sharing", certainly, but not generally considered "platform sharing."
      That being said, so many brands/manufacturers are making such modular vehicle platforms now, that the line is super murky, like with the "Subaru Global Platform" used on the 2022 BRZ. Heck, even Porsche 911 and Cayman are now technically on the same platform, even though suspension setup & engine placement is totally different...the phrase "shared platform" is almost as vague/whatever-you-want-it-to-mean as the word "coupe" nowadays (4 doors??? lifted crossover???)

    • @stevemartegani
      @stevemartegani 2 роки тому

      @@pkennethv I think the major comparison is with the Miata, which doesn't share any components with other Mazda's outside of maybe the engine design but not the engine itself.
      Having owned a BRZ and quite a few other Subaru's, the twins do share a lot of parts with Subaru's including the suspension design and pickup points. There are differences with the front suspension due to the relocated engine and steering rack, but the differences are minor outside of that, and a lot of the handling characteristics come more from the changes in weight distribution and suspension tuning over the Impreza as opposed to being something entirely new.

      Not effectively. If you turn down the level of assistance on an EPS system it ends up actively fighting you when you turn the wheel quickly. In slides the gen1 car would prevent you from being able to turn the wheel quick enough to catch the drift. When they refreshed the car and put the bigger EPS motor on it solved the drift problem but made the steering completely dead. There is no fix for EPS.

    Seems like the Z, besides traction control weirdness, has the same flaws as the old ones, which are easy to solve. Sway bars, better springs and dampers, and diff mounts have been essentials ever since the 350z, so I’m fine with that. It sounds like it’ll be better for grip than as a drift missile. I wish the steering was better and there’s no way you could wrench on that engine yourself though.

    Oh man, SO glad to know about the over-intrusiveness of the ECU mapping but that - - and the fact that sport-mode does not eliminate it - - has really dampened my enthusiasm for buying the Z. I own an Infiniti G37S and one thing I HATE about it is that even once the clutch is totally engaged accelerating from a stop in 1st gear the electronics will not permit full throttle. At first I could hear the pedal repeatedly hitting the stop as I rapidly depressed/released/depressed it trying to get the engine to respond but it seems limited to half, if not 1/4 throttle either in 1st gear or until a certain speed is reached. Just so profoundly annoying that that - - and the notchy gearbox - - have completely ruined my enjoyment of the car. I pray that flashing the Z's ECU or perhaps future refinements by Nissan will solve or improve this. What a damn shame that Nissan has essentially neutered what is otherwise an awesome package.

    Regarding your comments about the Bose stereo around the 30:00 mark: yes the Bose stereos in Nissans has sucked for years. My dad is one of those people that continues to buy cars from the same brand for whatever reason. He owned a Rogue back around 2011 that had a Bose system and I thought it sounded terrible. Then he bought a 370Z several years later with the premium Bose sound system and I thought it sounded even worse than the crossover. I can't believe they still haven't figured it out in the new Z. I guess with Nissan struggling over the last several years, that's not something they're bothering to put resources into
