    Has anyone here put their used cakes outside and had them start growing mushrooms where you put it? I've been putting all my old stuff into a big pile of broken down deteriorating wood that has grass, dirt, and some weeds growing in the pile. I'm hoping if I leave it there and having it eventually pop some mushrooms out of it. Not to eat them but just to have them growing and drop more spores in the area so maybe more will start to pop up in my area where I live

    • @GoombaGrows
      @GoombaGrows  4 місяці тому +5

      If the conditions are right and there is nutrients and water for the mushrooms. They will grow :). I put mine outside and have been waiting for some to pop up as well but I think it just gets too cold where I live most of the year for them to grow :/

    • @LazerCatHelmet
      @LazerCatHelmet 4 місяці тому +4

      Yep. You can cover it in more nutrients ( or crumble into like a spawn) and if conditions are right, thats just what happens. If they are right for your area, they can noc an outdoor bed.

      Now that is a solid question that I don’t necessarily have a solid answer for. Honestly when it comes time to dunk for an all in one bag I tend to take the cake out of the bag and transfer it into a monotub for the dunk and further harvest. I do this because it will create more surface area to absorb moisture and grow mushrooms on then it would inside of the bag.

    LOVE the channel, man! Straight and to the point. Question: with that liner being more rigid than the traditional black plastic liners, do you notice more side pins or is the mycelium strong enough to latch on and pull this liner with it?

    • @GoombaGrows
      @GoombaGrows  11 місяців тому +2

      So far I’ve noticed that it’s harder for the mycelium to stick to the walls in later flushes. You might get away with minimal side pins for the first 1 or 2 flushes if you pack it tight but the liner often doesn’t shrink enough with the cake so you’ll see side pins later on. They don’t tend to be an issue at all they sometimes they just grow funny.

So far so good on the side pins. You still get a few after the 3rd and 4th flush once the cake has shrunk significantly but if you use no liner and pack down the sides pretty tight you should be able to avoid side pins for at least the first flush possibly even the second and third. It’s just a little harder to clean out the bin once all is said and done without the liner.

      I have not used it but it’s something I have heard of and I’m interested in testing it out and making a video with it. • @GoombaGrows
      @GoombaGrows  8 місяців тому +1

      I noticed quite a few of them on my last grow as well. Those are mushroom aborts. There’s a few reasons that can cause aborts from what I’ve learned. I think a big reason you will see them is not enough moisture. I tend to see more when my cakes are starting to dry out. Another cause for aborts can be bacteria or contaminants. I also believe lack of nutrition can lead to aborts and overall genetics may also play a big part in how many show up in your grows. I am no expert though and this is just the information I have gathered in the last few months from my own experiences and research. Hope this helped!

      Sadly I have been trying to create a website for goomba grows and that has heavily delayed the video production. When going into creating it I had no idea how much time and effort was going to be needed to get it completed. It is still on the list of videos to make and it is high on the priority list as I believe it is something that every mycologist will experience and it might throw you off at first. Dont worry though, aborts are 100% normal and you more than likely will see them in all of your grows. There is varying reasons for a mushroom to abort but a lot of the time it will come down to conditions. Make sure your humidity is right, and there is enough nutrients for the mushrooms along with the humidity. Often they will abort for no reason at all simply to give more energy to other more thriving fruits.

      Make sure that when you are colonizing bulk substrate you let it colonize for as long as possible and try your best not to open the lid. Also make sure your bin is completely sealed during fruiting conditions. Having FAE coming through could make it fruit too soon. Mostly though I believe it is up to genetics. Coco coir and vermiculite are good for substrate and I prefer to use millet grain for spawn but there are lots of different options to choose from depending on the species you are growing and what they prefer for nutrients :)

    Dunking the cake wont disturb the pre existing pins?

    • @GoombaGrows
      @GoombaGrows  9 місяців тому +1

      It will, sometimes they persevere and continue growing and sometimes they don’t. But no matter what without the dunk all of your pins would most likely turn to aborts or not grow very uniformly due to lack of moisture.

    • @GoombaGrows
      @GoombaGrows  10 місяців тому +1

      It’s hard to get all of the mushrooms off the cake when they are super small without damaging the mycelium. I can guarantee though that most of those mushrooms you see prior to the dunk would’ve turned to aborts because there was not enough moisture in the cake

      Your supposed to leave the pins.. alot of your 1st and 2nd flush mushroom pins show up on your 1st flush .. if u pick them the mycelium has to use more energy to create more new pins for 2nd flush

    how to you avoid contamination while dunking since everything is in open air. I opened my tub once and it got contaminated. I also have my tub automated so im not sure how to dunk the cake without messing with that equipment in there

    • @GoombaGrows
      @GoombaGrows  10 місяців тому

      You unfortunately are always taking a risk when dunking. The water you use can induce contamination as well as the open air conditions. Honestly though if your bin gets contaminated after a dunk there was most likely already contamination somewhere in there and the dunking just made it spread more. I have only ever had 1 bin become completely contaminated after a dunk and there was no saving it. But I also find that it is 100% necessary to dunk if you want more flushes.

    Newbie grower here. I saw on several other grow videos that they recommend soaking only one hour for every inch of substrate. You said to soak for 12 -14 hours. So is the one hour of soaking per inch of substrate not long enough then? I'm a little lost now. Thanks.

    • @GoombaGrows
      @GoombaGrows  Рік тому +1

      Personally I do 12-24 hours. I have seen different arguments on how long and what calculations to do to find the perfect time. I skip all of that and keep it simple. If I feel the cake is very dried out I’ll leave it in for 24 hours. If it’s only mildly dried out after harvest I’ll only do 12-14 hours. Hope this helped!
