Has anyone here put their used cakes outside and had them start growing mushrooms where you put it? I've been putting all my old stuff into a big pile of broken down deteriorating wood that has grass, dirt, and some weeds growing in the pile. I'm hoping if I leave it there and having it eventually pop some mushrooms out of it. Not to eat them but just to have them growing and drop more spores in the area so maybe more will start to pop up in my area where I live Update: I had like 15 big ass ones come up lol!! Woohoo it worked!! ❤️✌️
If the conditions are right and there is nutrients and water for the mushrooms. They will grow :). I put mine outside and have been waiting for some to pop up as well but I think it just gets too cold where I live most of the year for them to grow :/
Yep. You can cover it in more nutrients ( or crumble into like a spawn) and if conditions are right, thats just what happens. If they are right for your area, they can noc an outdoor bed.
I put a shoe box outside in my garage it started pinning full set all over I was so stoked. Three days later I went to go maybe harvest some! I had trippy fruit flys in the tub I was so mad I hate trippy flys
Followed this exact tec on my first ever shoebox. After the first 5 flushes,I decided to dunk my brick after watching yours and two days later I've counted about 14 lil guys coming into fruition. THIS TEC WORKS, THANKS🤙🤙🤙
What are you using instead? I use a 66quart mono tub but I only harvested about 20 shrooms my first round over the course of two weeks, it was excruciating. Hopefully my 2nd flush will be much more plentiful with me hydrating the water
Finished my first flush ever yesterday. The canopy was so full i couldnt believe how many mushies i got. Thanks for your videos! Trying for a second flush now. I soaked my cake for only 7 hours, we’ll see how it does.
This was a great video. You really stayed on point and hit all of the important things without a bunch of extra unnecessary stuff. My questions are: 1. You said begin fruiting. Does that mean that right away? You’re going to start fanning it twice a day and keep their Microport tape on instead of closing it off for a while? 2. Next time can you give suggestions for people who don’t have this exact tub? I have an inflatable tub and I’m not sure what to use to hold the floating cake down. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the positive feedback! I will make sure to try and go more in depth and incorporate different options for different circumstances as I know not everyone will be using the same equipment. When I begin fruiting I change all the holes from being sealed, to being breathable. I usually don’t fan or mist for the first flush and just let the mushrooms do their thing. However if I notice that the bin is too dry or the mushrooms start to get fuzzy feet I will mist / fan once or twice a day. Hope this helped!
Now that is a solid question that I don’t necessarily have a solid answer for. Honestly when it comes time to dunk for an all in one bag I tend to take the cake out of the bag and transfer it into a monotub for the dunk and further harvest. I do this because it will create more surface area to absorb moisture and grow mushrooms on then it would inside of the bag.
Pour cooled, boiled water into the bag until cake is covered, close bag and leave for twelve hours...empty bag of excess water and continue fanning process and then misting as growth reoccurs...🙏🍄 Hope this helps...
I have well water should I filter my water?? I m new so don’t crap on me for this question but what was your mix you grew in or is this the same process for all?
No crap at all to give, I personally think it would be just fine. It’s best to use as clean of water as possible. However I use my tap water and it’s certainly not the cleanest. I say give it a shot just to test and see how it does!
LOVE the channel, man! Straight and to the point. Question: with that liner being more rigid than the traditional black plastic liners, do you notice more side pins or is the mycelium strong enough to latch on and pull this liner with it?
So far I’ve noticed that it’s harder for the mycelium to stick to the walls in later flushes. You might get away with minimal side pins for the first 1 or 2 flushes if you pack it tight but the liner often doesn’t shrink enough with the cake so you’ll see side pins later on. They don’t tend to be an issue at all they sometimes they just grow funny.
Have you ever used MGP plus? If so, it states a “dunk” alternative by doing one spray on the lid and closing it up when you want another flush. Just wondering your thoughts on that.
I have not used it but it’s something I have heard of and I’m interested in testing it out and making a video with it. I also think it will be pretty hard to get the moisture needed for further flushes without dunking as I’ve learned from experience. Mushrooms need a lot of water and I’ve had much more success with cakes that I’ve dunked than ones I’ve heavily misted.
That’s what I just did moments before watching this the hydrogen and oxygen are what mushrooms are made of and the sanitization is very much useful I use my filtered garden hose !
I'd spray the surface of it down with peroxide after. It won't hurt the mycelium and it helps prevent some contamination. I get the mycelium is strong at this stage but it isn't invulnerable to contamination.
I don’t think your tap water is infused with trichoderma. I also don’t believe it would make much of a difference if any at all. However if you can use distilled water more power to you.
You can 100% use a closet. I’ve used a closet for over a year and still do. However I am looking into getting a tent as it should be easier to maintain the temperature inside of a tent during colder months.
My little 5×7 closet works great for me because there's no a/c duct blowing dust everywhere and it's much easier to control the air with a small air purifier as well as the temp which is several degrees higher than the rest of my home so everyone can be comfortable meaning myself and my mushrooms, lol!
Hello, I have an extremely important question: Can I add vermiculite after seeing that the coconut fibers are colonized by mycelium? That is, finish the top layer with vermiculite?
@@chestermarcol3831 after you dunk the cake and go through a few flushes the cake will shrink. Unless you wanted to add substrate every day or so to fill in those holes I don’t see much of a point in adding substrate after the initial spawn to bulk.
@@chestermarcol3831 of course! Something else I should note that wasn’t mentioned in this video is that I have recently been experimenting growing with no liner. So far so good on the side pins. You still get a few after the 3rd and 4th flush once the cake has shrunk significantly but if you use no liner and pack down the sides pretty tight you should be able to avoid side pins for at least the first flush possibly even the second and third. It’s just a little harder to clean out the bin once all is said and done without the liner.

What kind of yields are you getting with a tub that size? I run a Martha with large trays, which I love. I’m stuck deciding between adding another Martha or just stacking some monos
I love my monotubs that stack and on average I’d say I get around 2-3 ounces dried. Could be more could be less. Depends on conditions and genetics a lot.
I usually do this for every flush after the first harvest. That way your cake is optimally hydrated and you will get a lot more mushrooms and only should need to do around 3-4 flushes to get the full potential out of your mushroom cake :)
This can slightly depend on circumstances but I think 6-8 hours is a good amount of time for a dunk. But you can even do 12-24 hours if you wanted too.

I noticed quite a few of them on my last grow as well. Those are mushroom aborts. There’s a few reasons that can cause aborts from what I’ve learned. I think a big reason you will see them is not enough moisture. I tend to see more when my cakes are starting to dry out. Another cause for aborts can be bacteria or contaminants. I also believe lack of nutrition can lead to aborts and overall genetics may also play a big part in how many show up in your grows. I am no expert though and this is just the information I have gathered in the last few months from my own experiences and research. Hope this helped!

Hi! good video. I have a question. I already did 1 flush (It wasnt very big, i got around 8 big mushs, and a looot of aborts). The problem its that the soil its still pretty hydratated. Should i soak the bulk in water in order to start the second flush? Or maybe just wait untill they start growing again?
It’s totally your call. I’m sure you already did something with it as I replied late. I would assume a dunk would be beneficial in this case even though the cake still seems hydrated. It will only absorb what it needs.
@@ShouldaWaved this is a great question. I have heard of people adding casing layers after every dunk and having success. I will be trying it in my upcoming video on true casing layers :)
Yes! Usually it won’t cause any issues. I do recommend taking as many mushrooms off the cake before dunking as possible but if there are still some left that are hard to get don’t worry about it!
Got my tub off of the max yield bin website. You can also check out microppose.com and use code GOOMBA GROWS for 10% off your order. They have sweet bins as well. I prefer them over the max yield bins.
What do you use for substrate? I’m trying to inform myself before I start my myco journey and all I’ve heard about so far was grain in some type of bag? Are there any other materials I could use as substrate?
Coco coir and vermiculite are good for substrate and I prefer to use millet grain for spawn but there are lots of different options to choose from depending on the species you are growing and what they prefer for nutrients :)
Shouldn’t hurt your grow. A more distilled / filtered water is 100% preferred. But if you don’t have access to that, tap water should work just fine! I’ve only lost one bin to contamination after a dunk and I don’t believe it was from the tap water.
Hi, very informative video, but i have an issue, my cake in the monotub has started the lil pin (2nd flush) but in some days they grown't up, can i clean up the top of the cake and rehidraite? Hoping for another flush
It most likely is the wording in the titles, descriptions, or even what you say or show in the video itself. Try to make your videos aimed towards the general cultivation of all species of mushrooms and you should be just fine!
I don’t fully understand the question but if I’m lucky I can usually get 5-6 flushes per bin. Each flush usually nets me about 2oz dry but it does vary depending on a few different factors.
Make sure that when you are colonizing bulk substrate you let it colonize for as long as possible and try your best not to open the lid. Also make sure your bin is completely sealed during fruiting conditions. Having FAE coming through could make it fruit too soon. Mostly though I believe it is up to genetics. Also make sure your using around a 1:1 ratio of substrate to spawn.
When you took your cake out to clean the bin, where did you set the cake? Did you put any material between the bottom of the cake and the surface it was set on? How much does it matter for the surface to be iso’d immediately prior?
You probably figured it out by now but I set mine on foil....disclaimer I'm still a newb but just harvested. Foil is supposed to be "sterile" from the heat it takes to make it. Keep in mind you always have spores and dust and shit around in the air at any given time.
Head over to MICROPPOSE and use code GOOMBAGROWS for 10% off your entire order! They have lots of supplies for monotubs and Olympus myco has grain, substrate and more!
It will, sometimes they persevere and continue growing and sometimes they don’t. But no matter what without the dunk all of your pins would most likely turn to aborts or not grow very uniformly due to lack of moisture.
i can see that you have primordial or pins when you begin the dunk. What i have read is that no mushroom fruits should remain when beginning with second flush. The cause for not leaving any small fruit was molding. It seems that information is wrong. Could some one confirm that small pins can remain when beginning a new flush please. Also thank you for the content. I removed all my small primordia formations : / when starting my second ever flush
With or without is usually not an issue. You don’t want huge clumps of stem/ aborts on your cake when flushing as it may induce bacteria, mold or wet rot. When it comes to the smaller mushrooms though don’t even worry about it. You can dunk with them on the cake still. I haven’t ran into any trouble doing so, so far.
I’m having trouble finding how many quarts it can hold but it appears to be able to hold 30lbs of medium mix. I guess with the standard conversion it’s about a 15 quart tub
Newbie grower here. I saw on several other grow videos that they recommend soaking only one hour for every inch of substrate. You said to soak for 12 -14 hours. So is the one hour of soaking per inch of substrate not long enough then? I'm a little lost now. Thanks.
Personally I do 12-24 hours. I have seen different arguments on how long and what calculations to do to find the perfect time. I skip all of that and keep it simple. If I feel the cake is very dried out I’ll leave it in for 24 hours. If it’s only mildly dried out after harvest I’ll only do 12-14 hours. Hope this helped!
Sadly I have been trying to create a website for goomba grows and that has heavily delayed the video production. When going into creating it I had no idea how much time and effort was going to be needed to get it completed. It is still on the list of videos to make and it is high on the priority list as I believe it is something that every mycologist will experience and it might throw you off at first. Dont worry though, aborts are 100% normal and you more than likely will see them in all of your grows. There is varying reasons for a mushroom to abort but a lot of the time it will come down to conditions. Make sure your humidity is right, and there is enough nutrients for the mushrooms along with the humidity. Often they will abort for no reason at all simply to give more energy to other more thriving fruits.
how to you avoid contamination while dunking since everything is in open air. I opened my tub once and it got contaminated. I also have my tub automated so im not sure how to dunk the cake without messing with that equipment in there
You unfortunately are always taking a risk when dunking. The water you use can induce contamination as well as the open air conditions. Honestly though if your bin gets contaminated after a dunk there was most likely already contamination somewhere in there and the dunking just made it spread more. I have only ever had 1 bin become completely contaminated after a dunk and there was no saving it. But I also find that it is 100% necessary to dunk if you want more flushes.
It’s hard to get all of the mushrooms off the cake when they are super small without damaging the mycelium. I can guarantee though that most of those mushrooms you see prior to the dunk would’ve turned to aborts because there was not enough moisture in the cake
Your supposed to leave the pins.. alot of your 1st and 2nd flush mushroom pins show up on your 1st flush .. if u pick them the mycelium has to use more energy to create more new pins for 2nd flush
Thanks for the feedback. I agree with the music side of it, it’s hard to find good free music! I’m looking into purchasing some that’s better for the future :)
That’s awesome! Glad you are exploring the realm of UA-cam. Plenty of other creators deserve a view. Hopefully you can find a channel that fits all your needs. Maybe try a music channel if that’s what you are so worried about?
@@dedwitey you absolutely can do that! It might give you a higher chance of getting no contamination. For me though it is hard to boil water and let it cool for dunking when I have 4+ bins that need to be dunked. Sometimes I’d rather take the small risk. For someone with just one or two bins I think it’s 100% worth boiling the water first

@@briwinterburn Bens works much more reliably if you first boil, steam or clave your bags. They arent as clean as you think.
Hi!
@@GoombaGrowsWhat you think about casing after second flush after a dunk perhaps
@@ShouldaWaved this is a great question. I have heard of people adding casing layers after every dunk and having success. I will be trying it in my upcoming video on true casing layers :)
What do you use as your main ingredients for your cake? I bought a bunch of msupply grow bags but they look quite different from your cake.
I just use millet grain for the spawn and manure based substrate for the most part
Thank you!
is it okay to still have aborts and small pins in the cake while doing this?
Yes! Usually it won’t cause any issues. I do recommend taking as many mushrooms off the cake before dunking as possible but if there are still some left that are hard to get don’t worry about it!
what can I do if I didn't use a liner
whered you get your tub?
Got my tub off of the max yield bin website. You can also check out microppose.com and use code GOOMBA GROWS for 10% off your order. They have sweet bins as well. I prefer them over the max yield bins.
What is the background music here?
@@happyEmpath Jo cohen & sex whales - We Are
What do you use for substrate? I’m trying to inform myself before I start my myco journey and all I’ve heard about so far was grain in some type of bag? Are there any other materials I could use as substrate?
Reptile Coco Coir + Coarse Vermiculite.
Coco coir and vermiculite are good for substrate and I prefer to use millet grain for spawn but there are lots of different options to choose from depending on the species you are growing and what they prefer for nutrients :)
Some people use just coco coir as it's extremely resistant to contamination
What about the chemicals that are in tap water? Chlorine, fluoride, etc.
Yes! Pick all of the mushrooms off that you are able too then rehydrate :)
@@GoombaGrows oh right going to try love you❤️🔥
Set up a youtube channel by my videos keep being removed. Can you advice what i need to do? Is it wording?
It most likely is the wording in the titles, descriptions, or even what you say or show in the video itself. Try to make your videos aimed towards the general cultivation of all species of mushrooms and you should be just fine!
@GoombaGrows really appreciate that.. it was me showing fruiting of Golden teachers
How many flushes will produce yield?
I don’t fully understand the question but if I’m lucky I can usually get 5-6 flushes per bin. Each flush usually nets me about 2oz dry but it does vary depending on a few different factors.
@@GoombaGrows you understood very well, sorry 4 my en, thx
My cake never looks this white, any suggestions? I'm getting decent growth but the cake falls apart when I try to dunk.
@@GoombaGrows will give it a shot my man. Thank you!
Keep pushing on
When you took your cake out to clean the bin, where did you set the cake? Did you put any material between the bottom of the cake and the surface it was set on? How much does it matter for the surface to be iso’d immediately prior?
You probably figured it out by now but I set mine on foil....disclaimer I'm still a newb but just harvested. Foil is supposed to be "sterile" from the heat it takes to make it. Keep in mind you always have spores and dust and shit around in the air at any given time.
@@MOON_BABY1 thank you 😁
How to find container like that
Head over to MICROPPOSE and use code GOOMBAGROWS for 10% off your entire order! They have lots of supplies for monotubs and Olympus myco has grain, substrate and more!
Dunking the cake wont disturb the pre existing pins?
It will, sometimes they persevere and continue growing and sometimes they don’t. But no matter what without the dunk all of your pins would most likely turn to aborts or not grow very uniformly due to lack of moisture.
@@GoombaGrows thank you.
i can see that you have primordial or pins when you begin the dunk.
How long do you leave light on during fruiting stage
Usually no more than 8-10 hours. I tend to just leave it on during day and turn it off at night.
What’s the name of that mushroom ?
Bob
would it be a bad idea to flip the cake?
I've read it being beneficial but I'm new
I’m getting so many aborts any idea what’s happening
What size monotub is that
22.5” x 15.5” x 12”
I’m having trouble finding how many quarts it can hold but it appears to be able to hold 30lbs of medium mix. I guess with the standard conversion it’s about a 15 quart tub
Why sterilize the tub when cake has already been exposed?
Precautions
Great info thanks! Your video would be so much better with the music
Thank you for watching and the feedback :)
Why not just use distilled water??
Thank you!@@GoombaGrows
Use RO water man and get rid of the tap water it has chemicals in it if it is a public utility. At lease RO filter it.
Probably wouldn’t be a bad idea if the genetics you have are giving you problems with contamination but I usually don’t have trouble after dunking
@@GoombaGrows if it isn't broke don't fix it right 😂

What is an abort? have you been able to make that video?
How long do you soak yours fof
Can’t you just mist the cake like a madman before 2nd flush?
how to you avoid contamination while dunking since everything is in open air.
But I also find that it is 100% necessary to dunk if you want more flushes.
maybe use distilled or purified water from bottles instead of using tap water
Is it me or does anyone find it strange that her is dunking with mushrooms growing. That's a first!
No way. I bet you microwave your nachos too. Just mist the sides. Don’t bruise the mycelium.
This was a super informative comment! I’m very glad you added that. Thank you sir!
Two hours was enough

Why not use boiled water to dunk instead of tap water?
@@dedwitey you absolutely can do that! It might give you a higher chance of getting no contamination. For me though it is hard to boil water and let it cool for dunking when I have 4+ bins that need to be dunked. Sometimes I’d rather take the small risk. For someone with just one or two bins I think it’s 100% worth boiling the water first
Don’t use tap water!!!! That’s the main problem. Use distilled
