@braden7180 it was actually, all cartoon network shows we all grew up with love and remember from our childhood(HB not included) are actually very late 90s shows, some even early 2000s, ducktales basically kickstarted the tv animation renaisance and for years disney was the only ones making amazing animated shows, the only other good shows at that time was rugrats and ren and stimpy other than disney and nicks original 2 shows, 90s cartoons were absolute garbage for years until about 1995 when both CN and nick began to really take this seriously
_I am glad to have grown up in the time where Dexter's Laboratory help shaped Cartoon Network and also follow creator Genndy Tartakovsky's other works since then._
Nerdstalgic needs to do a video on Hey Arnold! That series has aged incredibly well. Especially in hindsight when you see all that made it past the censors.
What I love about Dexter is that it doesn't hand out funny lines for a few laughs but has layers of witty and thought out substance which you can break through on your own. In the Hanna barbera Era, cartoons were basically animated sitcoms with funny dialogue. It had its own charm but this new Era brought power puff girls, Foster's home for imaginary friends, codename knd and so many more cartoons that trusted that their audience are smart and can enjoy whatever abstract and absurd the idea can be.
Perhaps the one of the funniest things I've ever witnessed from the show came from the episode when Dexter ordered and consumed the biggest burrito I've ever seen in a cartoon. He spent the rest of the episode dreading his demise before ultimately accepting the inevitable and settled his affairs. He goes to his parents to give them the grim news and lets out one of the largest, loudest, most obnoxious farts in all of cartoon history. (Seth MacFarlane eat your heart out) Then, when the last echo fades away, we see Dexter standing in place, red as a radish with embarrassment and the family television blasted into the wall. To this day, I still die with laughter every time I watch it again. What a wonderful show Dexter's Laboratory was.

So true, What A Cartoon and Dexter's Laboratory were the foundations that Cartoon Network built it's empire of great Cartoons. It's true that before this, Cartoon Network was full of reruns of much older cartoons mostly from the 60s and 70s with no original content. Then in 1995/96 Dexter was born along with many other cartoons. What A Cartoon had many different cartoons under it's belt featuring one or two cartoons from each individual creator. Whilst shows like Johnny Bravo, Powerpuff Girls, etc managed to get their own shows with more episodes, others fell under the radar. However, Seth McFarlane created Larry & Steve which was the foundation of Family Guy. Larry & Steve only had 1 episode but without Larry & Steve, the'd be no Family Guy, American Dad or Cleveland Show and No Dexter would mean no Larry & Steve. Without What A Cartoon, Cartoon Network would still be showing the reruns it started off with which have now long since transfered to Boomerang.

Dexter was always one of my favorite CN shows, especially of the early era. I think it and Space Ghost Coast to Coast helped set CN apart from the competition and gave them their own vibe. The show itself was always a fun ride with a lot more cinematic stylization than you wouldn't see from most other shows. Even now, there are still a ton of episodes that I remember (dodgeball, fishing, clues, back of the bus, star trek convention, were-clown, etc). While I wouldn't say that it was the first show of the 90s to do the "two-levels of humor" thing, as Animaniacs, Rocko, and even Rugrats all did the same before Dex (even Ren and Stimpy in their own way), but it is definitely a charm of the show. While Samurai Jack is still my favorite of Genndy's so far, Dexter is still definitely up there.

Always loved the Dexter's Laboratory cartoons, they still stick with me to this day. 1996 was a crazy year for me and Dexter's Laboratory was one of the few things that kept me sane and entertained. Plus like you said, it helped shape future cartoons that I also enjoy. Gonna dig out that Dexter's Laboratory VHS and play it (Yes I still have VHS tapes). Also, I love the music you used in this video.
Oh finally Dexter's lab! My all time favorite. Why? I had to wait until 3pm to watch an hour or two of Looney Toons in TNT. When my father came home one day and told me that there was a new channel that was 24/7 cartoons, that was the most exciting news I have ever heard. Then after a few years of watching Hana-Barbara's masterpieces, Dexter appeared. And I identified with him 100% since I am scientifically inclined, had an annoying sister and always wanted my own lab. I was the real life Dexter in my mind. Suddenly I was not alone, at last someone else understood. I had to wait a very long time to discover who was the legendary Genndy Tartakovsky that was always in the credits of my favorite toons. I also waited with hope that someday Dexter could be back. I'm still hoping it does in some way. So of you are reading this Genndy, please bring back Dexter
I feel like this guy just writes essays and then makes them into videos. Like imagine if you were in english class and you had to do a google slide presentation on how Dexter's Laboratory changed animation. That's basically what I think of when I watch these videos. Keep it up man👍
What's even crazier is that Dexter would've never existed if Genndy didn't gained experience working with another show. Before Dexter, he worked on 2 Stoopid Dogs, and he later had the opportunity to make his own show. Without 2 Stoopid Dogs we wouldn't have Dexter and so many shows that Dexter spawned. You have a start somewhere
Looking back, this show was really depressing given how many times Dexter got screwed over. Although, something that bothered me as a kid that still bothers me today is how did his parents never find out about his lab given its size, power needed, and crazy inventions around the house?
Well, the show clearly illustrates that his parents are oblivious in general, so them not finding out about his lab makes sense. Though now that I think about it, their power bill must have been incredibly expensive to the point where they question about it.
William Hanna and Joseph Barbera were behind a lot of "golden oldies" like Tom and Jerry, Scooby Doo, Yogi Bear, The Flintstones and The Jetsons, to name a few. Definitely worth a video!
@@BlondeCurlsBlueEyes Don't forget some of the later additions to the Hanna/Barbera dynasty like SWAT KATS: The Radical Squadron, The Pirates of Dark Water, and the Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures.
It’s an old style of cartoon one that was basically followed for a long time. If you see any of the flinstones , jetsons or older scooby doo you’ll get a general idea of the art style. Basically Hannah barbara were the ogs next to looney tunes of course
In short, Hanna and Barbera started making cartoons for TV syndication, which at the time time was incredibly rare to unheard of. It basically meant they had to make a new episode every week in a time when animations were incredibly slow to make. So they started using a method called Limited Animation. They limited the amounts they had to draw by making the movements quick, and repeating backgrounds. Examples would be characters moving quickly are just blurs (don’t have to animate the initial movement), and why most of their main characters had a neck item. This way they could move the head and use it to talk, whilst keeping the rest of the body still. They were incredibly successful, but it also became an issue. They needed to keep making more and more, and the demand was overwhelming it caused them to have many shows that were clearly rehashes of other popular shows (popular shows like Scooby, was followed by 10s of detective shows with an oddball mascot, Flintsones followed by other family sitcoms in different eras, Roman, Future etc), bad animation or voice overs, characters being copy pasted, exactly the same voices for different characters, and overall just a huge dip in quality. They still had some goldies (Jetsons for example), but it was an issue. Eventually they came out of the dip and Cartoon Network bought their back catalogue and hired them to help oversee/make newer cartoons for example Powerpuff Girls. How much influence they had at that point I have no idea though. I think that’s the basic premise, there’s a lot more too it, which he could make a great video about, but if you’re interested in their style just look up limited animation. Also if you want to see their crazy catalogue I recommend searching it on google. It is insane how much they worked on and you can see why they had trouble keeping up. That said they always had some great ones mixed in with the bad.
I watched the very first Dexter’s Lab Cartoon Cartoon the first time it ever aired on television growing up and have been a fan ever since. Great video.
"The Avengers of animation." This could not be closer to the truth, hearing the list of people who worked on Dexter's Lab made my mind faintly hear the avengers theme.
My parents didn’t have Cartoon Network until I was about 12, so when I’d visit my grandparents, my brother and I would watch it compulsively. This was the one show at the time I would drop my books for and run to the living room for. My brother and I would sing the theme song. It was a great bonding experience. We still use some of the quotes to this day.
Dexter was the first person (character) I had aspirations to be like. I didn't notice he was supposed to be a "loser" in the eyes of his classmates. He set his mind to greater achievements, and he managed to get there. That inspired me as a kid. And to a certain extent, it still does.
I have been fortunate enough to have been born at the right time to have witness the evolution of cartoon network. I was a child when it first aired, and watched it up to the cartoon cartoon era.
The year was 95, maybe 96. I was around 4. The cable guy comes to instal cable tv for the first time in my life. I, as a curious kid, follow him through the process. In the end, he says "there are cartoons on channel 36", and turns the tv on CN. Dexter's on. First time i've seen it. First memory I have of seeing a Cartoon. Changed my life.
Man I rw going to my grandma house and watchin Cartoon Network all day like man those are good times. Y’all enjoy every moment y’all have cause life go by u soo fast when u grow up 😭
fuck you.. makes me remember the good old day.. its was school break.. woke up to my grandma cooking noise and smell.. open the CN/Nick?Disney while waiting her to finished.. also she love to watch tom and jerry with me.. and sometimes, my nephew also staying at grandma house and they bring their ps1 till late night since grandma cool with us staying up late.. so much fun.. RIP grandma..
Man oh man, what a trip of nostalgia. I was born in 2005 so I basically watched it a lot, its a shame what cartoon network has became now...Teen Titans Go! I'm looking at you
Don't forget, without Dexter and eventually Powerpuff Girls, there would also be no Flapjack which means no Adventure Time, no Regular Show, no Gravity Falls, no Amphibia, no Steven Universe, no Uncle Grandpa, no Owl House, and no Infinity Train. That is the chain reaction Dexter's Lab created
Grew up with the old Cartoon Network and watched dexter transform it. Never knew how important it was though to the future of the network. Thanks for the vid

So of you are reading this Genndy, please bring back Dexter
love this. would Also love a johnny Bravo episode. either really loving the vids. really hits the nostalgia.
billy and mandy should come first
@@razkable yeah I miss Grim and Evil
@@razkable Hey, does anyone know how to like a comment more then once? thanks!
Creators of Johny Bravo and dexter were close friends.
I feel like this guy just writes essays and then makes them into videos.
Like imagine if you were in english class and you had to do a google slide presentation on how Dexter's Laboratory changed animation.
That's basically what I think of when I watch these videos. Keep it up man👍
It’s amazing how much of an impact this show had.
Your custom animations are very slick. Also, always happy to see love for my man Dex.
If he can invent that stuff he can find a way to power it externally the source need not be in their house
Honestly, a lot of stuff we watched as kids is really depressing and filled with heavy undertones. Cartoons are actually happier now imo
I think i remember mind wiping coming up a few times
@@candicehoneycutt4318 a little TOO happy if you ask me. If you know what I mean 😃
This is one of the most important video from tour channel, props
This guy talks as if he speaks any louder, his parents will hear.
Sergio Ortiz it’s good tho
He's loud whispering
Or a roommate
@@lay-2356 For be fair the dialogue he's saying is very complicated.
Honestly, this channel needs to get more views...
it's so entertaining and fresh to watch these type of videos
and i always learn so much.
Big I-D-K-S-C’s
Wow these shows got a lot past my family lmao
i still dont get it
I see it now, it's clever how they got that one passed the censors.
@Pedro Ortega incorrect.
The I don't know sh*t club
So happy to have discovered your channel. Right in the nostalgia feels
Such a great show that I didn't realize had such an impact in such an interesting way! Can't wait to see what you cover next
I grew up on WB and H&B cartoons. I was in my late 30's when Dexter's Laboratory came out. It was straight up FUNNY!!!
How are you holding up now

One of my all time favorites. Every time I watch dexter I can't help but get entertained, no matter how old I get.
When Dexter’s mom sneezed on his breakfast my whole life started to make sense
Can you go over the "hannah Barbara" era? You mentioned it a lot and I'm not familiar with it
Joeger - yessss!!!!
Today's my birthday and you have blessed me with a post! Thank you!
You are one of my favorite channels. Your editing slaps, and your writing far eclipses anything by Saberspark or Mr. Enter.

@@princessthyemis Their content is significantly less refined, though.
I watched the very first Dexter’s Lab Cartoon Cartoon the first time it ever aired on television growing up and have been a fan ever since. Great video.
My mind has officially been BLOWN!!! My jaw literally dropped at several points in the video :00 amazing work!
"The Avengers of animation."
This could not be closer to the truth, hearing the list of people who worked on Dexter's Lab made my mind faintly hear the avengers theme.
Now tell me. How exactly is an 8 year old an adolescent?🤔
Officer i can explain
@@claudiobernardoni4408 lmao😂
I used to watch Dexter's Lab with my mom. She always liked how cute it was.
Is your mom hot?

Dude. This video was awesome, thanks for making this known!
There is DOOOOOOM AND GLOOOM!
For real though I became a chemist because of this cartoon, crazy but true.
Your narration is so good ! Your videos are a work of pure passion. Keep it going bro !
Dexter's is one of those shows make me wish I could play with my parents mind so they don't know i have a secret lab in the basement
Dexter was the first person (character) I had aspirations to be like. I didn't notice he was supposed to be a "loser" in the eyes of his classmates. He set his mind to greater achievements, and he managed to get there. That inspired me as a kid. And to a certain extent, it still does.
He is a loser himself
I have been fortunate enough to have been born at the right time to have witness the evolution of cartoon network. I was a child when it first aired, and watched it up to the cartoon cartoon era.
Im glad this was part of my childhood :)
I wanna see what he has to say about Ren and Stimpy
Ughhhh the Nostalgia overload !!! It's killing me.. 😭😭😭
Dexter's Lab was the best. I had no idea how significant it was vis-a-vis later cartoons. Really enjoyed this video.
Dexter has the cutest voice ever and I am saying this unironically!
I prefer when he was voiced by Candi Milo, that one was cuter
I realized while watching this video that Dexter is voiced by the actor who would go on to voice Chucky on Rugrats, so double adorable!
Wow didn't know Seth was a writer on Dexter. Early seasons of Family Guy with Stewie having a secret lab in the house makes total sense now.
indeed.
Perfect, just started my meal. Thank you!
Your channel brings back so many good memories. I was born in ‘92. Thank you.
You wouldn't believe I was just watching Dexter's laboratory before watching your video, I still love the show. Nice video

Can you make a Duckman special? That series was the grandfather of so many things too (adult things)
These videos are pop culture education. I freaking love em.
Man oh man, what a trip of nostalgia. I was born in 2005 so I basically watched it a lot, its a shame what cartoon network has became now...Teen Titans Go! I'm looking at you
0:23 Dexter... Adolescent? LOLWUT, he's six to eight years old. He's nowhere near puberty.

Thanks for the vid
i truly admire genndy tartakovsky´s work he deserves so much respect.nerdstalgic thank for posting this Review for now i am Learning from something
