I’ve always had this idea of how Family Guy is Peter slowly becoming an alcoholic. In the first episode he gets really drunk and Lois gets extremely upset which happens less later on telling me he didn’t really drink before. So what we see is a combination of what happens as a result of him drinking and falsified memories with how it affects the family dynamic. I’d like someone else to make it because I don’t really want to.
Lol yeah, I am not one of those people that believe that you need to be an elevated intellectual to understand rick and morty. It’s a fun show, that’s well written, that literally anyone can enjoy if the humors something you’re into.
True. And I think it is because if it is the opposite, if something does matter, if there is a meaning or a reason for existence, it would be the only thing he cannot understand
And season 4 we see that Rick realized that things matter. Him being a bad father, being awful to the toilet guy, being a jerk to Morty... In season 4 he suffers for that.
Zoe Kin I don’t think he is. Sociopaths do not, deep down, care about others. Meanwhile, we see that Rick’s greatest weakness is that he cares about Morty and hates himself for it. Also, Rick is on the autism spectrum, and we generally have trouble expressing empathy in a way that makes sense to others. This led to the misconception that autistic people don’t have empathy. On top of that, he is an alcoholic who has, again and again, seen that his life does not matter. He has watched his loved ones die 100,000 times in countless ways. That would seriously fuck a person up. He is not a good person. But I don’t really believe he’s a sociopath.
I think it's backwards. I think he's almost certain that nothing really matters and that's why he behaves the way he does but him inside this rick (C-137) is the only rick who actually wants to believe there's a purpose. that's why we see he's the only rick who cares about his family even if it's little.
I like comparing Jerry and Toby from the office. Both are pitiful characters, but toby Is driven down by the people around him, while Jerry feeds off of their pity. Jerry becomes a better person when he realizes he cares about the people he had been feeding off of, while toby falls deeper into the pit of self pity and gives up
You kinda left out Summer and dismissed her. When you peel away the teen angst, she's easily the most Rick-like member of the Smith family apart from Rick himself. She's jaded, she's generally unphased (compared to Morty) by the hand full of crazy adventures she gets taken on with Rick and she'll usually have little trouble quickly adapting to things like a post-apocalyptic universe or a female-controlled alien planet. Also, like Rick, she desperately wants others to love her even though she always pushes everyone away (oddly, the only character she seems to show open affection for is Rick, since she normally addresses him as "grandpa Rick vs. Morty who just calls him "Rick"). She berates Morty every bit as much as Rick does even though she cares about him and, also like Rick, she says she wants Beth and Jerry to get divorced and abandon her even though she runs off with the Mad Max dude rather than trying to face her parent's divorce. She seems to be the show's creator's way of portraying a less nihilistic version of Rick since she seems to see some value in human life, being disturbed by things like Rick's space ship's murderous tendencies or Unity's slavery system and the ensuing nipple-based race war when Unity starts to weaken. I think Summer kind of portrays a more "normal person" mirror of Rick.
I wouldn't say "more normal" lmao, I'd say more millennial. And saying it like that I'd imagine your a millenial lol. But yeah I'd say good take other than that, just Rick's millennial granddaughter
@@THE_MOONMAN summer was definitely born after 1997 as she’s in high school and the show began in like 2014. She’s like 16, that would make her gen z even though the shows time is pretty suspended
Summer is at varying points all of the other characters. As naive as Morty or as useless as Gerry or as overwhelmed as Beth or as unphased as Rick. She's a decent, 'oh we can't have this character do too much at once' option, but she also doesn't have a lot of traits that properly define her as unique from the characters around her. Not on a metatextual level anyway.
I mean he did take like a 3 month break between season 1 and 2 of Nerdstalgic. I'm guessing he was working on these episodes during that time, what with the excellent script and quality editing.
That’s an interesting take: that by adding a “normal” character like Morty, the show becomes more absurd in our eyes, because we basically have a yardstick for what we’re supposed to see as normal.
It's not something I would have thought of either, not in the context of a show that is as much sci-fi adventure and drama as it is comedy, but it's a pretty sensible basis for comparison - a lot of standard comedy works the same way, by having a "zany" character, usually called the "funnyman" or "banana man," and a "straight man," or a character who reacts normally and rationally and shows the zaniness of the more comedic character. In this case, naturally, Rick is the funnyman, and Morty is the straight man. Much like Jim, from The Office, or Michael from Arrested Development.
Excuse you, Summer is extremely important. She represents the "normal" part of the family in the beginning (normal whiny teenager) but then slowly becomes more like Rick as he becomes more of a role model to her (she also is the only tangible connection Jerry still has to the family as she was the only one to willingly visit him after he moved out) before she finally departs from his antics as she's mostly figured out that she doesn't need Rick's approval to be herself. Yes, she goes on adventures but she's her own person during them.
I was looking for this comment! I also think that Summer is important for the in-family dinamics. As an older sister she often represents Morty's frustration with the real grown-up world. And she becomes even more likable as she matures.

I keep saying it over and over again; what makes a good show? Character Development. If the characters don't grow and change, they don't feel like real people and you don't become attached to them. The more raw and real the emotion of the characters, the more connected the viewer becomes. A good foil to Rick and Morty in this sense is Family Guy. Peter doesn't grow and change no matter what happens in the show. You feel no emotional connection when something good or bad happens, and that's fine because the show is just for pure laughs. Then take something like Letterkenny that is also comedy-centric but the characters experience real problems and when Wayne has a certain relationship problem (I won't spoil anything) you feel the hurt along with him. It makes you sad and angry and those feelings linger even when you turn the TV off.
It's a shame that Family Guy (Season 6-present) couldn't do that. As far as I am concerned, South Park is the only sitcom I've seen where most of the characters have a depth of humanity to them (Exceptions being Cartman and Butters)
But every tv show doesn’t have to have the same goal. I love Rick and morty but I’m still a huge family guy fan. I enjoy them for different reasons. I watch family guy expecting 20 mins of stupid, random, offensive funny shit and I don’t really care (nor do I need to) about the characters and that’s okay
@@theviniso Well to be honest, in my opinion, if he spent more time with Stan and Kyle, he would've been a decent person. However, he has been far too manipulated by Cartman and he has to redeem himself

You can use that same title template on a video about “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia”
Excellent video! I just discovered this channel, and I LOVE IT! I love Morty's character development throughout the show - Aside from what you said, it's just a realistic, natural evolution that has given the show wonderful character depth. A once frightful, anxious, over-stressed boy has turned into a resourceful, mature person, that can hold his own under pressure. This evolution is firmly felt since he's one of the two main characters of the series, it colours all of it, and the realism of this evolution aids the grounded family drama you mentioned in the video, which makes the show impactful by being relatable. There's nowhere left to go with Rick really, perhaps an evolution will occur for him far later down the line when the show is nearing its end, but as of now, he stands as a delightfully entertaining, unique character, and you know the old saying - "If it ain't broke...". I say "nearing its end" as that way, the show retains the fantastic character it has now for essentially its whole run. However, with Morty as opposed to Rick, there have been great places to go, and I actually still see some more potential for evolution, that I expect will get fulfilled.
“Caring about bad people” is like playing The Walking Dead. I’m a grown ass man and I burst into tears at the end of the Final Season. And I know that the characters are killers and thieves but it doesn’t make your attachment to them any smaller. Yeah, you can change the story by the way you progress through the story but it won’t end one thing: Clementine, as well as AJ, is a killer.
I've got to give it to you. There are a lot of takes out there that get way convoluted in trying to figure out this show. But this take, it's a good one and spot on. I do want to add that as Morty becomes less the audience viewpoint character, Summer has been picking up the slack in that respect.
are you watching R&M for the show or the fandom ? your argument is showing that the only reason you "like" R&M is becasue you want to be a part of this group, but you know there is a lot of retarded people that think they are on another lvl, and you dont want to be associated with them. im not telling that it is that way, but from your argument it looks like it
That's one example, but there are lots of them, of varying quality. Decades ago we had "very special episodes" where a character disrupted the idealized sitcom worlds to walk down some dark path, but either got scared straight or punished for it by the end of the episode. Now we have series built around the transgressions, i.e. "what if Mike Seaver or Vanessa Huxtable (or whoever) pursued a self destructive life that got them estranged from their families?"
I dalayed watching the show for the longest time. Last summer I sat down for one ep and well I finished it all. Like how real the show is and the blunt comedy.
Awesome, this pretty much sums up how I love the the show without liking the characters on a emotional level. As how Rick once say: _“I’m sorry, but your opinion means very little to me."_

For sure Cartman is the dumbest genius in tv and it's so relatable to our generation
@@skyluke9476 yeah relatable, i remember when crab people turned the whole town gay, or when my friend became the new Hitler or when he turned 9th graders kid parents into chilli, so yeah south park is really relatable

I love rick, hes my favorite character
Same bro OP is an terrible person
Dude you need more recognition for your work. Its so entertaining.
It's a shame that Family Guy (Season 6-present) couldn't do that. As far as I am concerned, South Park is the only sitcom I've seen where most of the characters have a depth of humanity to them (Exceptions being Cartman and Butters)
What bojack horseman dude, all the main characters are so well developed they could be real people.
@@ameliawade78 Ok, maybe that as well.
Hey, don't you trash talk Butters
@@theviniso Well to be honest, in my opinion, if he spent more time with Stan and Kyle, he would've been a decent person. However, he has been far too manipulated by Cartman and he has to redeem himself
You have the best narrating voice and have the best insights on what the show is. You voice what we are all thinking
This was a cool video but when did you ever explain the "paradox" mentioned in the title?
The characters
I like the low fi music in the back while I’m hitting this blunt back to back. I’m scrolling thru nostalgia of the past realizing I can’t go back. Questioning everything I see because I can’t tell what’s real or not. Rick and morty gives me peace. Somehow I feel like I escape into the show itself forgetting where I’m sitting. All until the credits roll and I start whistling that damned tune. That tooney tune. It’s not looney but it’s Luny. That took that I’ll hear until I loose consciousness and take. My last breath
8:04 I disagree about this. I think Summer might just be the most interesting character in the show. That statement is more applicable to Jerry.
I agree. She's a sort of Morty without so much of Rick's attention. So you see the damage more clearly.
Daw I honestly believe that the statement isn’t applicable to any character. They are all important and necessary for the flow of the show.
Bruh the editing is hardcore. Nice job
Nerdstaligic: Rick and Morty isn't the Perfect show
Also Nerdstaligic: shows the Perfect episode of said show
I've been watching your videos for a while because they keep coming up in my recommended, and I think I can finally say with confidence that all you do is talk out your ass, make stuff up, use big words to sound smart and circle around points without really saying anything at all.
You can use that same title template on a video about “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia”
This is “The Genius of Rick and Morty”. There’s no paradox
Id like to see some south park content, love what you are doing with this channel bro
That is coming VERY soon.
Nerdstalgic glad to hear it bro keep up the hard work
Thank you man, genuinely appreciate the support!
So happy you're uploading more often. Thank you for your hard-work.
Where did the why we remember Disney orinal movies so well go? It seemed intriguing
Yeah, you can change the story by the way you progress through the story but it won’t end one thing: Clementine, as well as AJ, is a killer.
omg your introspection on these tv shows is SO interesting thank you for making these types of videos
Cover Futurama it would be cool ;)
@Rhys Higgon Bad day at work, bud?
I've got to give it to you. There are a lot of takes out there that get way convoluted in trying to figure out this show. But this take, it's a good one and spot on.
I do want to add that as Morty becomes less the audience viewpoint character, Summer has been picking up the slack in that respect.
As much as I like this show, it does kind of get ruined by the fandom.
are you watching R&M for the show or the fandom ? your argument is showing that the only reason you "like" R&M is becasue you want to be a part of this group, but you know there is a lot of retarded people that think they are on another lvl, and you dont want to be associated with them. im not telling that it is that way, but from your argument it looks like it
Tell me a Fandom that doesn't do that?
How do? How is people liking the show affecting you? I see more people bitching like little girls about the fans than I see the fans being lame.
Lots of lame and annoying fans, making cringy cosplays, tiktoks or "high iq comments"
@ naw man, talking in general, people posting Rick and morty memes with the hashtag deeeeep and stuff
My fav ep was Pickled Rick. It just showed how amazingly smart and capable Rick is. And oh yeah, I Love Rick! Maybe I'm sick.

The editing on this is amazing!
And then he turned himself into a pickle. The funniest shit I have ever seen
Just wanted to say I just absolutely love your videos, love the editing, the way you structure everything, keep it up man!
It’s always sunny does this amazing
That's one example, but there are lots of them, of varying quality. Decades ago we had "very special episodes" where a character disrupted the idealized sitcom worlds to walk down some dark path, but either got scared straight or punished for it by the end of the episode. Now we have series built around the transgressions, i.e. "what if Mike Seaver or Vanessa Huxtable (or whoever) pursued a self destructive life that got them estranged from their families?"
Another great video- great analysis, great editing! 👍👍👍
Haven’t seen rick and morty but here I am
I dalayed watching the show for the longest time. Last summer I sat down for one ep and well I finished it all. Like how real the show is and the blunt comedy.
Awesome, this pretty much sums up how I love the the show without liking the characters on a emotional level. As how Rick once say: _“I’m sorry, but your opinion means very little to me."_
dude this is only the 2nd video of yours I've watched... and your editing is amazing!
Stupid People Who Think They're Intelligent: *stops listening to the analysis a quarter of the way in and rush to the comments section to explain why they love Rick*
Stupid person who thinks they’re intelligent: stops listening to the analysis and rushes to the comment section to explain how they hate a certain type of person. (Lol I know it’s ironic)
if you love/relate to rick that’s a red flag. it’s like being a bojack apologist
MatUrBoi Stupid: lacking in intelligence or common sense. Most of this comments section is filled with comments that seems to miss the point of the video which either means that those people didn't finish it or that they didn't understand it. It's definitely nonsensical to comment on a video that you didn't watch. It's also a bit ridiculous to be triggered by a character analysis of a fictional person. Who said anything about hating anyone? My comment was admonishing people who commented without listening to the video not admonishing people who commented at all. You don't seem to have a strong grasp on what irony is.
@@anarchist_parable I think I found one
@@kayleebrown2900 Not really. Loving Rick is a red flag but relating to him is not. Many people relate to him because his worldview isn't that uncommon. You don't have to be that smart to have a nihilistic view and some people idolize rick because he sometimes seems to thrive in this meaninglessness.
But I think they choose to unsee that Rick himself isn't happy and most of the other characters live a way more fulfilling life.
Take a second to appreciate the high quality editing on this video.
Should've just said bojack horseman
What i was thinking of the whole vid
I don't know, never seen a full series but I've never found myself particularly caring about any character from that show. With Rick and Morty I was invested in the title characters from the very first episode.

i love rick
Same . Rick is awesome. The only character I don't really like on the show is Jerry. Even then he has his moments.
If you like the character thats fine, but he's not someone to idolize......
@lawrence sahanna
They never said they idolize him. And yeah, Rick isn’t necessarily a character to look up to but he’s one that people can relate to on certain levels, such as bottling feelings, struggling with depression, alcoholism, and so fourth. And some people just like the character because he’s a well written character and he’s funny.
@@Bananer-Oil yeah fair enough. I've just come across enough people who actually do and it's infuriating seeing people tryna justify Rick's shitty behaviour
@@laurensahanna5826 Rick is a complex character and it's difficult to understand why he acts the way he acts in certain circumstances. He's not a total asshole, as we can see he clearly cares about others in multiple scenes in the show, but that still doesn't excuse his actions even if he doesn't mean what he says half of the time.
Man! I love your editing style!
I love this series, thanks for doing what you do.
Summer is the glue that keeps the show and family together.
Great episode. My brother's idolate of Rick & Morty. Can't claim the same, but I'm willing to give it another go, maybe.
Seriously excellent video essay.
Out of curiosity is anyone else not really feeling this season. Like it still has funny episodes, but I haven’t had a desire to rewatch any episodes again. Cant put my feeling on it, just doesn’t feel as tight as past 3.
So far it's not as strong as previous seasons. It's tough to make a consistently funny series, so I'm hoping this is just a hiccup.
I love the editing in this video

Although I agree that the characters are good. I think that the thing that makes, rick and Morty a masterpiece is the ideas of each episode. the episodes have such interesting yet weird settings and ideas that make Rick and Morty a masterpiece.
We’re all morty accept it
That's ridiculous. I have personally met a exetremely intelligent person that is also an asshole. That's basically what Rick is. So a Rick is out there somewhere. The question is how much of a Rick are they?
