2009 was one of the highest-quality years we've seen in tennis history, maybe even the best single year. For Davydenko to stand out in London given the caliber of tennis we had been seeing was just insanity. And I'm incredibly glad he is remembered well for it.
2008, 2011, 2012 too
A very interesting year for tennis! A lot hapeened! Among my favorite years of tennis with 2011 and 2017.
Nah.. Rafa crashed FO forward and Novak had a terrible year.
Better example would be 2011 where Novak dominated a prime Nadal while Fed was good enough to beat Novak at the FO and push him all the way at the USO.
Absolutely terrifying. His groundstrokes were nearly unbeatable in 2009.
@Lime Soda oh yes yes, Nadull Knee was always injured every match he lose. we all have heard many times.
@Lime Soda i dont care about any of these players moron. lmao you tennis fanoys are obsessed with grown men who don't even know you. try talking to a woman for once.
@Lime Soda lol. The desperate, pathetic excuses Nadal fans resort to.
Face facts son: Davydenko’s game matches up Perfectly with Nadal’s.
Particularly on a hard court where Davydenko neither feared, nor respected Nadal’s straightforward game.
If memory serves, Nadal only wriggled out of a 2007 clay court tie in Hamburg by the skin of his balls in a brutal 3 set thriller. I suppose he was Injured then too right?!
Tennis is all about match ups and Nadal was fortunate not to run into this guy more often during his prime years.
@Lime Soda You got an excuse for every loss? Lmao.
When Nadal losses he is alwais injured😂😂😂
Every player that qualified for the top 8 in the 2009 edition were extremely accomplished players and had very strong years. 6 of the 8 had at least one former appearance in a grand slam final. That week, Davydenko (who wasn't one of the 6) beat almost all of them apart from Djokovic and he wasn't far off in claiming victory in that loss either. Insanely impressive.
So impressive when he played at this level. What a rythm
Rhythm*
@Shawn Breh chill on the toxicity LOL
@Shawn aashole.
@Shawn must be hard being a Nadal hater... sorry bro 😂
Explosive and aggresive tennis. On his day, on a fast court, davydenko was a match for the top guys. The guy takes the time away from you, like a tennis machine, keeps throwing balls, with speed and skill
Federer, Nalbandian, Safin, Davydenko, Coria. Great talents of the game.
a good mix between ferrer and agassi !
He had AO 2010 in the bag. Then choked v Fed in the QF.
@@armstrongtixid6873 That was a panic attack or too much respect to Roger. In that tournament he wasplaying incredibly, even in that Federer match and suddenly, he switches off and lost dramatically.
@@felipenavarrete7337 ikr, He was up 6-2 3-1 40-30 (on Fed's serve) and then lost 13 games in a row???
Fun fact:
Davydenko turned pro at 18 (1999), and retired at 33, not before earning 16 million USD in prize money, which made him the 26th all-time leader in earning. (Wiki)
7 years after turning pro, at age 25, he reached #3 in ranking.
That's pretty good for a career of 15 years.
He was last seen working with Karen Khachanov unofficially.
The only player who stop nadal to win in Miami , paris, shanghai. The 3 missing pieces to complete golden master
Nadal has won indoor Madrid in 2005, the tournament which was replaced by Shanghai from 2009. So Nadal is not missing the 8th masters of the year. It's not his fault that the 8th masters of the year changed place in the middle of his career, such things happen from time to time. Anyway, he doesn't need golden masters. At this point of his career he should only focus on slams.
@@hopy51
No, because he didn't win Miami and Paris!
@@hopy51 this is not same, and you have more then 12,13 years to win shangai after change.
@@quentinhirschfeld9382 Yes, he is missing Miami and Paris. But I think at this point he should only focus on slams.
Nadal only needs Paris and Miami. Not Shanghai
he's so aggressive. I LOVE IT
He's one of the best baseline players in my heart, maybe the best while moving. Just a little bit unlucky.
Nalbandian is the best davydenko is up there
@@adambennaim5500 I agree
I liked Ferrer more
@@dinomijatovic3921 Down to opinion ...
@@armstrongtixid6873 Ok. I think Ferrer was better player of two from same category of players
Davydenko is way better than the current next gen's but some fan sections calling him a weak era player to protect their idols
Positive h2h against prime Rafa and owned him on hardcourts. These fans only look at the Grandslams and think of him as weak player but don't realise that the gs format doesn't suit all players equally well.
Well to be fair he had like 1 good tournament, which was exactly this one
Davydenko no where near Thiem/Tsitsipas
@@Fdanism with 5 titles I recon he had atleast 5 good ones
@@Fdanism Don't agree. He won Paris, Shanghai and Miami masters 1000, several 500 and reached 4 grandslam semifinals.
He should have won at least a slam
IKR, Thiem and cilic had one but I think Davydenko is way better then them
@@farhatk6054 Way better? That's a bit too much. Cilic was in god mode during the second week of US Open 2014, Thiem has proven he can beat Djokovic and Nadal in GS tournaments.
@Lime Soda Thiem is overrated
Yep, at least a slam. Just my preference, but I prefer Davydenko over Safin.. Davydenko (in this video at least) is in absolutely fine form, absolutely amazing
@Lime Soda , yup, good as he is, he had weaknesses. Take away the pace, add depth, Davydenko would have troublr beating the top guys
His ability to hit balls from the baseline no matter what amount of topsin, flat or speed the ball had is just surreal and haven't seen that kind of efficient game in the so called next gen. His shot placement was extraordinary ( my personal opinion. Don't want any debates on it).The next gen are good in their own ways but I still would chose players like davydenko, nalbandian, Rios over the next gen. Their matches were a treat to watch. The intensity was just something else when these guys were at their best
@Ema Strnad well Rios was a really talented player. And another player I forgot to mention was Fernando Gonzalez. He had the most powerful and amazing forehand in my opinion. Both Rios and Gonzalez are from Chile.
@Ema Strnad yeah Massau too was a good player. Now he is thiem's coach. Anyway enjoy Rios highlights!!!
I know this wasn't really the point of your comment, but reading what you said, I really wish we could have seen davydenko vs the next gen. I especially would love to see how dominic thiem (i know he's not really considered next gen) would have done vs davydenko. The intensity on that court would be off the charts, but one of thiem's trademarks is that he takes nadal's heavy spin forehand style, and implements it off both wings and also aims closer to the baseline. This forces most of his opposition back or else they will be overwhelmed, but as you said, davydenko would have taken those balls on the baseline and I would LOVE to see who would break down in such a contest. would thiem overwhelm davydenko? or would davydenko be able to handle the heat and steal away all of thiem's time?
@@kevinchang8090 well even I would like to see that match!!! Because davydenko's ability to place the ball no matter the speed or spin on the ball is something I tried to instill in my game as well. And as for Thiem he has the ability to hit a winner from literally anywhere on the court. If he takes the ball early he tries to put a lot of speed and flatness otherwise when well behind the baseline he puts speed and a nice amount of topspin. And as for thiem's backhand that is another beautiful aspect of his game! And as for the outcome of the match I guess thiem might be the one who would emerge as winner.
Good group of players there. All three can take the ball on the rise and hit great angles. I always trash Nadal because he can be beaten so easily by truly great players who take the ball on the rise like Davydenko did here. These great players can be forgiven for their lack of consistency.
Красава,приятно было смотреть за его выступлениями!
Sometimes is good to remember how strong was Davydenko
7:23 that backhand shot is ridiculous
amazingly impressive
davydenko played so classy and elegant.
What a pity , he hadn‘t taken GSlam. Great tennis player !!!
any other era, he'd have one.
Nalbandan is another but for that back injuries and rios
Кроссы с бекхэнда у Коли конечно ультра си. Нереальные просто выходили.
To quote DelPotro "he plays like in video games" he does indeed. So fast and flat, such a special kind of technique to watch.
my favourite player all time. When he was in best shape he could beat everyone except Federer. He coudn't find a way to beat him....until ATP Finals :) Watch some matches with him against Nadal. Pure magic !
It's because the rhythm he plays with, he is an absolute maniac hitting on the rise and firing both wings, Federer LOVE to play that rhythm it doesn't bother him at all, Roger's only weakness is the the topspin defensive players
@@farhatk6054 exactly right!
@tano2775 Only earlier in their careers or if they were playing the best tennis of their lives. Otherwise, Federer took them out.
2009 was Davydenko's year! He was an absolute beast and beat the best players in the world and some of the greatest of all time.
Какой красавец, Николай. Очень жаль,что с такой искромётной игрой так и не удалось выиграть ГС.
Каждый раз на пути вставал Федерер
I remember Federer saying in an interview that Davydenko and Delpo were " clearly the two guys to beat / the main threat in 2009" (or something like that) and that he really thought these two would establish themselves in the top 5or 3 the following years... never really happened though
Injuries
Николай великолепен. Спасибо Николаю за то что я узнал что такое настоящий зрелищный теннис и по сей день наслаждаюсь этим видом спорта.
Look at what Del Potro did at the net when he lost the title to Davydenko. He’s already such a nice sportsman even when he’s so young
can't agree more, especially when compared with how Federer and Nadal did
@@xuepengliao9002 Delpotro and Novak have hearts of gold. Look at Novak greeting Davydenko and exchanging shirts with him. Unlike Federer and Nadal, the salty losers who are marketed by the media as gentlemen. they are fake gentlemen
Wow, some of the best tennis games I've ever watched, this guy won against the bests!
Devydenko was such a class player. I follow tennis🎾 for the past 10 yrs...
This feat is probably almost as impressive as Nalbandian' one
Toronto 2014 Tsonga defeated Djoko, Murray and Federer.
@@Joga11Bonito Not close.
@@Joga11Bonito Mentioning Murray heavily dilutes the comparison
Davydenko beat all 4 slam winners that year - Nadal, Federer and Del Potro. In some ways it is more impressive than Nalbandian's.
@@saikat93ify Nalbandian was better because he didn't lost a match in Madrid, and defeated the three of them in straights.
one of the 'Tennis United' episodes featured 'The Russians'. When asked which russian player has the best footwork, everyone said 'Davydenko' - best mental strength - again 'Davydenko' - he is very highly regarded amongst todays top russian players.
Yes, he played lightsout tennis, but the difference this time was that he kept strong even when things became tough. He kept fighting and believing non-stop. He threw everything he had into the matches and then some. Whereas before he would waiver or somtimes even fold, this time he kept firm. That's what was so sweet to see as a Kolya fan.
I'm a fan of Nadal always have been. And I use to dread when Nadal had to play Davydenko haha. He was a force not to be meesed around with. In his time very a very dangerous opponent.
he was known as the jet-legged russian. he was regularly merciless in the first set of any match but then used to become tired and the spirit went down. thats why when it comes to long grand slam matches he couldnt deliver. he never lacked talent as u can see after brilliant forehands of roger and delpo he instead of defending pounced on them and hit a forehand of his own double quick. a player of tremendous quality.
Коля помним, гордимся тобой
REAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DJOKOVIC, NADAL & FEDERER can be seen even when they were younger at how they meet at the net after the match with Davydenko. Shows their true character/personality
Shame he broke his wrist in AO 2010 and just had a steady decline after that point. Davydenko was electric to watch in his prime.
I know... that basically ended his career
That was in Rotterdam, not the AO
3:30 I've never seen Federer off-balance like that!
Абсолютный пик карьеры Николая
He is the one of my favorite players.
Great player, Had amazing groundstrokes 👏👏
The tempo of the federer match was crazy. Seemed like 2x speed.
I was just going to comment on this
Only player who could hurt nadal before djokovic happened
He also won 3 masters title! He wasn't just a one time wonder
Davydenko was kryptonite for Nadal. I think he got advantage vs Nadal in H2H for lifetime.
He is one of the shortest tennis players. But his height did not stop him from beating tall players to win 2009 ATP final!
Davydenko was one of my favorite players. Wish he won a major
One of the best players to never win a Grand Slam !
*never.. Your sentence totally conveys a different meaning
'not win' I assume you mean. But yeah watching this performance it's really difficult to believe he never won a slam, it's just other-worldly tennis. Nalbandian was able to produce similar at times but he also never won a slam.
Came here after Medvedev took his first ATP Finals Titel. Congrats to him!
Every good player have their moment/s on the court. What separates the greats from good ones is consistent great play
Davydenko WAS consistent. He just could not sustain his level in the best of 5. I guess no one can play such high tempo tennis for more than an hour.
my feeling is davydenko was the only one who took the ball earlier than roger when the opponent was roger...
Davydenko had trouble closing out matches. He led Federer in the 2006 and 2010 Australian Opens and the 2007 French Open, but lost. However, at his best he was a superb player.
you don't know tennis
@@monstermichaeltoad5705 why don't I know?
@@monstermichaeltoad5705 Yeah, why. I don't see what's wrong with his comment?
His angles were insane. Just enough pop non the ball and it stays low. The way he produced angles just aggravated the hell, out of you. He could essentially hit an angle out of thin air.
When he played like that, I think this player was unbeatable
Mate he was furious man !!!!
Imagine playing a tournament against the big 3, delpo and söderling all in their prime and winning it...
Imagine playing against five players out of which robin söderling had the least successfull 2009 (altough he beat Rafa at RG)...
Помню смотрела это все вживую, просто мастер!
Best footwork ever
Davydenko, Safin, Medvedev, Kafelnikov...
Metreveli, Cesnacov, Rubliev, Anndrev ( Volcov ) 😢
Such high level ball striking is so so rare to see
What a tough group Davydenko survived. Even though Rafa was clearly not at his best physically, he put up a fight. Soderling playing his best years and Djokovic in the brink of starting his dominance. Congrats Davydenko.
One of my all time favorites. Not the biggest or the most devastating shots but never gave up
3:57 *BLYAT*
D was the ultimate competitor
Davydenko technique is technical perfection. Forehand and backhand.
OMG that's definitely Dayvdenko in his prime that we all miss watching! An absolute serial killer. Medmedov really needs to step up his game. No pressure haha
9:28, the first russian to triumph at the season ending final, but not the last!
Medvedev today !!!!
No one hits like that these days 😞
What a treat
Give me back 2009
We miss you Davydenko
The best ATP world tour finals tournament that happened in London till date !!!
ND has a positive H2H against Nadal .....yea Novak Djokovic and Nikolay Davydenko👍♥️
@King of Clay Lol they faced each other 11 times ..not 2 or 3 times....6-5 is a very nice record vs Nadal ....its useless H2H for u bcoz ur idols trails in it
@aman these H2H will never matter in history...End of the day nadal share max grand slams with federer on earth.
@King of Clay dirt ball retriever is all nadull is. it takes actual skill on grass and hardcourt.
@King of Clay nunca va a ganar el Masters, sorry
and Dustin Brown ...the King !! hihihihi
Davydenko one of the few who has. Superlative his level for those years.
PS: 7:24 Absolutely beautiful that crossed two-handed backhand, incredible angle!
боже как же это офигенно было
Davydenko Nalbandian and Tommy Haas all should of won slams
The tennis world was stacked against Davydenko he never got the breaks, late finishes on courts then selected for early starts this happened again in the Australian that year, never got a decent sponsorship deal and then got accused of cheating, notice that the true sign of a champion is what you do in defeat ... Feds gets beat doesn't even look at Davy barely shakes hands and walks straight past him same for Rafa...
Да, Коля, тогда навёл шороху! Такое случайно не сделать! Убрал всех лучших!
LA REAL PESADILLA DEL BIG 3, FRÍO DE EXPRESIONES PERO EFECTIVO SU JUEGO, ME FASCINABA VER JUGAR AL GRAN NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO, LA PANTERA RUSA VELOZ COMO EL VIENTO Y DE GOLPES FUERTES COMO EL TRUENO👍🏿💪🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Even now, I'm still exited to look back his victory.
Davydenko was on a roll at the end of 2009 and at the beginning of 2010. It only came to an end against Federer at the AO2010 in the 2nd set... the rest is history.
What an impressive player.
That backhand was a thing of beauty. I think that's his most solid shot
Davydenko used to play a lot like Djokovic. It's no surprise that he gave Nadal and Federer trouble on fast hard courts.
AO 2010 was his best opportunity to win a slam. He was literally outplaying federer for a set and a half. If he had won, i think he would have went all the way and win the tournament.
Pause at 05:07 so pretty !!!
maybe you and her are meant to be together 😉 😂👍
Really good ...what a fantastic run...
He really deserve that tournament👍👍👍
Baseline Slenderman, well deserved.
He reminds me of an improved version of David Goffin. Fast execution, good counter puncher & fast mover.
I use to watch him go toe to toe against fed and he was so quick and clean hitting. He did not make too many mistakes.
Him and nalbandian are the greatest tennis players to never win a salm
for me winning ATP finals is slightly better then having a GS
The only thing crazy is that he never did this as often as he could have. Iam sure, like many others he would have won a slam or 2 especially in hardcourts if not for peak federer. He was world number 3 for a long time and was more of a challenge that say a Ferrer ever was
8:57
Now i know why somone compare him to rublev, used to see him a few games before but rublev could reach this level soon.
they play nothing alike
@@TheRafaelBond both are intense, but one of them doesn't have the bwehhh
I have always liked Kolja, even though Joker Nole is my favourite.
Beating all the reigning slam champions from 2009 😮😮
Will Medvedev or what Rublev calls him: Davydenko; win this year?
I sincerely hope Medvedev wins in London this year. He's not had the best year, sadly, but I would love to have him finish the year on a great high.
😂😂😂😂
@@Emil-Roma the the real russiian
Rublev cause he’s been having such a good year. Medvedev already has big titles from last year.
Probably Novak
There are many good players who could have won multiple grand slams if it wasn't for Federer. They just got crushed my Roger in the 2003-2007 period and then Nadal and Djokovic happened.
What's my math professor doing here 😂?
One thing I noticed he had that Borg backhand over the high part of the nets brilliant player
Russia plays a big role on world's tennis .. Rublev coming along is a restart
Medvedev is Russia's biggest talent by far
