Recorded Live: 12/31/1982 - Palladium - New York, NY

    Personnel:
    Simon LeBon - vocals
    Andy Taylor - guitar
    John Taylor - bass
    Nick Rhodes - keyboards
    Roger Taylor - drums
    Andy Hamilton - saxophone, keyboards
    Summary:
Originally broadcast on MTV as the headline act of its New Year's Eve broadcast and simulcast on FM radio for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, this lively set from the popular British New Wave rockers Duran Duran marks their first major New York City triumph.
The group, which was spearheaded by vocalist Simon LeBon, had ruled the MTV charts since the end of the previous year, but they did not take off on radio as rapidly. For this show, Duran Duran was not only performing to a packed house at New York's Palladium Theater, they were playing to millions of viewers all over the world. The stakes were high, and Duran Duran went for the gold. Shortly after this performance, in early 1983, "Rio" was in the U.S. Top 10.
All the essential early hits are featured here - including "Rio," "Save A Prayer," "Hungry Like The Wolf," and "Girls On Film." The show is interrupted to count down the New Year on MTV, but otherwise it remains a consistently upbeat show. The group augmented its original five-piece lineup with the addition of saxophonist/keyboard player Andy Hamilton.
This performance showcases the band when they were on the brink of worldwide stardom, if they weren't already there. The success of Duran Duran during this time period gave them enough momentum to get through most of the eighties as a successful act. It would also serve as the base of hits to keep the band poised for more than one reunion in the years that followed.

I can't explain to millennials the finest glamour and style of the first half 80's music bands, neither our feelings. I've never seen that elegance anymore, unfortunately. Believe me, I'm not an old mad shit, now music men are often angry, they watch the camera just like an enemy, made strange menacing movements with their hands, a few smiles. I thought it would have lasted forever, then clothes started darkening, it came rap and now trap.

WHY OH WHY was this awesome song by Duran Duran never released as a single? It would've been a huge hit just like all the other hit singles from the "Rio" album, and I'm sure a lot of Duran Duran fans will agree with that too. Plus Andy Hamilton's performance in this was great too, just like all his saxophone playing in "Rio" and "Careless Whisper" as well as his playing with Duran Duran on their 1984 American tour. As for John Taylor's bass playing in this song, it completely blew me away!! John Taylor is definitely one of the greatest bass players in the music business.

John and the band loved Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers of CHIC. They became great friends and were also creative partners.

I would love to see more of Rogers drum play. in my view he is REALLY underrated as drummer. I once read - don´t know if it´s true - he was the first one who mixed the conventional drums with the (then-)hexagonal electronical drums (I´ll never forget and always love as a kid of the 80ies) - This song is one great example of that mixture.

Heather Moultrup, the guy singing backing vocals while playing the cowbell and jumping up and down is Andy Hamilton. He played the saxophone on both the "Rio" and the "7 & The Ragged Tiger" albums plus the saxophone on "Careless Whisper" by George Michael. He also toured with Duran Duran on their massive 1984 American tour, and his saxophone playing during those performances were fantastic. I'm glad you love Duran Duran as much as I do.

John Taylor stated in an interview that when Duran Duran played "Hold Back The Rain" live, he could play the bass normally during the first and second verses with his fingers but would quickly have to use a pick when Duran Duran played the chorus!! In this performance of "Hold Back The Rain" John Taylor seems to have everything under control, but of course only John Taylor himself would know better than anyone else how this is done.

I barely remember this compared to Rio and Hungry like the wolf, but I think I like it better. I would have been 12 and it’s not like I had a stereo - had to wait for songs on MTV. Critics said they would fade away and were just a boy band - boy how they were wrong - back when bands formed from friends and friends of friends. John Taylor was always my favorite and is genuinely a nice guy - my husband met him by chance, skiing in Aspen, around 1985 or 86 in a warning hut - struck up small talk and my husband said “You look kind of familiar” (mind you he was wearing a hat and ski gear, so his hair was covered and he didn’t have the artistic makeup on) and John said “I play bass for a band called Duran Duran” - I would have freaked out but not hubs - he didn’t ask for his autograph because he doesn’t want to make people feel uncomfortable and figured he was trying to be incognito, and he respected his spay. I LOVE the songs heavy on the bass - love how it sounds.

I like the goofball on the left banging on the drum with one drumstick. You know he’s just hoping to score with anything left over after the real band picks all the girls

JT is the MASTER of the BASS! This song is about JT’s coke increasingly horrible drink and coke problems at the time. He’s been sober for decades now 🥰🥰🥰 Although, Simon looks cooked off his ass here. 🤪🤪 Looking again, they all do!!

They were and are so so good. Great musicians. Simon's dancing at that time was 1980's-appropriate. But who is that guy in the beginning dancing and hitting the cow bell? Too much cow bell?
