- Duran Duran - Hold Back The Rain
Genre: New Wave
Released: 1982
Recorded: AIR Studios London, England
Lyrics:
Hold back the rain
Yes we're miles away from nowhere and the wind doesn't have a name
So call it what you want to call it still blows down the lane
People tell me I haven't changed at all but I don't feel the same
And I've bet you've had that feeling too you can't laugh all the time
And if the fires burn out there's only fire to blame (hold back the rain)
No time for worry cause we're on the roam again (hold back the rain)
The clouds all scatter and we ride the outside lane (hold back the rain)
Not on your own so help me please hold back the rain
So what if the words ain't rhyming did you thing that it's just a game
I probably didn't even say that right and i really don't give a damn
Okay go off and wander I'm guilty just the same
Sometimes you're needed badly so please come back again
And if the fires burn out there's only fire to blame (hold back the rain)
No time for worry cause we're on the roam again (hold back the rain)
The clouds all scatter and we ride the outside lane (hold back the rain)
Not on your own so help me please hold back the rain
And if the stars burn out there's only fire to blame (hold back the rain)
No time for worry cause we're on the roam again (hold back the rain)
The clouds all scatter and we ride the outside lane (hold back the rain)
Not on your own so help me please hold back the rain
Hold back the rain, hold back the rain. hold back the rain
Hold back the rain (hold back the rain), hold back the rain
(Hold back the rain), hold back the rain (hold back the rain)
Hold back the rain (hold back the rain), hold back the rain
People really need to face it that Duran Duran are probably one of the best bands to ever exist. Their appeal is so wide. Sometimes I find bands that are all male who hit mainstream success only try to appeal to women but Duran Duran appealed to everyone. There hasn't been a band like them in a long time.
tallent
I just can’t face it ! They had some great tracks but hardly one of the best bands to ever exist 😂
I love them! Totally unique and never tire of songs!
The Beatles are the best Duran Duran is a second
After The Damned yesss agreed
This isn't one of their biggest hits, but it's one of their best songs.
40 years later and its still pure magic to hear this song !
You know the meaning of the song?
Takes me right back to the big boys in the 80s⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🐈⬛🐾
The bass line is simply amazing👌
You know what the songs about?
@@richcampbell6808 do you?
@@Wolliz Yes I do. Do you? It's about not cumming too fast .
No crap! It's John Taylor on bass.
@@richcampbell6808 Hold back the rain is a metaphor. The song is actually about a break up. Another words, Hold back the tears.
John Taylors shows once again why he is undeniably one of the best bass players of all time.Tyvm for posting all these great songs.
My 13 yr live old self was too mesmerized by John Taylor's hotness. My older self recognizes this fact 🙌
Best thing is I was young enough to have lived through this magic era of music
46! I loved Duran Duran and Def Leppard through my aunt! He through her a rose at a concert cause she flashed her boobs.
Well said sir, for I was there too
Me too. Loved the 80's and Duran Duran..!
agreed

This is a band that all the rock bands wanted to be like. What a time I was fortunate to see this Band take the world by storm. The videos ,the fashion just so cool.
There were so many good bands in the 80's. Duran Duran was at the top of the list.
Isolate the bass line. Perfection. My favorite Duran Duran song.
This was my favorite track from Rio. One of of the hidden gems from this still great album
love this very "underrated" song on what is one of the best 80s album of all time....top to bottom, every song is great. a true classic....
As a fan for 30+ years now this is their iconic album and will go down in history as the best 80's album.
roxette2 absolutely !
yes and also ASIA self titled album from 1982
I totally agree. I luckily even knew a woman who looked like the cover model. Too bad we were just friends.
It should but won't. Most people are ignorant of their music. Probably they would pick Thriller by MJ.
@@MrPizza063 Yes 1982 was definitely the heat of the moment
I wore out two cassette tapes of Rio.
This song was played the most and the loudest!!!!
Simon sounds incredible! Very sexy song. 40 years later and still takes me back to that time.
Listening to the entire Rio album still gives me chills.
You guys are all hard core DuranD fans and I LOVE it. This song is awe-some as is the entire Rio album.........
Pure gold!
And live... Duran is one of the most SOLID bands I have ever seen. I am amazed at their ability to recreate songs recorded 20-30 years ago with such accuracy. They recently performed "Shadows on your Side" at a rehearsal show and it sounded like they recorded it yesterday. My jaw dropped. A good musician isn't being the best soloist, it isn't all the frills, it's clean performances time and time again.... writing interesting music... something I personally thank them all for.
John Taylor is bass-ically awesome.
John Taylor what a beast of bass player....
yes!!!
Tattooedsailor Agreed. This was never appreciated as a teenager! Also, I did not realize that Simon wrote the song for Roger as a reflective warning of the rock and roll life style he was enjoying too muxh.
Tattooedsailor And incredibly handsome too lol.
Garry Harriman I did not know that, thanks.
Kblogg 777 Dont even go there, lol.....my teenage greatest crush
I just discovered this song, and it's so friggin' awesome!
the masterpiece of 80's music... absolutely
+GameBoyLegacy this is music
It was a crime they buried John's bass so low in the mix on subsequent albums. This is top shelf here
Love this band!! I saw them in concert at the Capital Center in Landover Maryland in 1984!! And Huey Lewis and the News opened up for them ❤️ Sooo great live and I saw some videos from 2017 and they still sound amazing, which is a rarity at their age 😊 Definitely my favorite 80's band ❤️ My all time favorite song is "Ordinary World"... I feel sorry for those who have not yet given it a listen, makes me "misty" 😭 every time ❤️
Lucky duck
And if The Five burn out there's only five to blame! Those lyrics may actually be their most profound, bar none.
What bass playing!!!! John was my biggest crush when I was 12
Loved this band, so much!
This may be my favorite Duran Duran song.
I wish I could have met these duran people this is pure musical perfection. It will be years be4 anybody can beat or match it
Unreal tune. Everything is perfect!
the best band ever!...in my opinion!
I miss the 80s.when my boys ruled!!!
Oh the synth 80s gold !!
The best version and one of my all time favorites from Duran Duran.
Pop Master Piece Album from front to back!! Every song is a Classic!!
When are they going to be inducted them into the Rock&Roll Hall Of Fame??
They should have been in there years ago!! The closest band that could ever compare to The Beatles!
The Fab Five Rules!!
Duran Duran Forever!!
Class of 2022 🙌 pretty rad!
Like many Italian teenagers in the '80s, my sister was absolutely crazy for DD. I did not like them very much, but i liked "Rio", and this track was my favourite - great bass, drums, keyboards. "Rio" was far superior to some following works and is now pure gold in comparison with current pop music. Ah, and it was a good time back then.
This may be the most Metal non-Metal song I've ever heard. Props.
This is like getting a big hug from the 1980s. I love it just as it loved me.
12 july 2023, chicago nw burbs, distant thunder, trying to sleep- only the distant thunder can rock me to sleep.
Duran Duran somehow tapped into a truly visceral feeling-- the sound of thunder- holding rain- and managed to put this to music.
Duran Duran helps my insomnia. GOD LOVE YOU.
wow...I am 17 years old again....utter brilliance
I'm 17 now lol, love it!!!
@@zanefitch9343 I'm 16!
hit my 40s, but still have this masterpiece in my vinyl collection. Love this band since 1984!
although it wasn't one of the singles or one they tend to do live, I always thought this was arguably one of their finest. crammed full of Duranness
They just performed this song last night in Chicago and it was fantastic!! The crowd went bananas when they started it, we DD lovers knew what was about to happen. Love this song!
I cant say what my favorite D&D song is(gods there are so many good ones!), but I have to say that this is definitely really up there! I love the combination of New Romantic New Wave and disco on this. Superb and just really damn catchy!

Saw them at MN state fair last year (2023) and man they are definitively an all time great and worth every penny of my close seats only problem is I should have forked out more to be front row 😝😝😝 they were spot freakin on and perfection live!!!
This is the superior version of this song 🙌🏻. Other versions/mixes mess it up so badly
Hello from Greece. Here 40 too and fan since 1983. Same experiences. I recenlty saw them live and they are great :)
The 80s was the absolute pinnacle of great music. It's a fact not an opinion.
The best UK band of the 80's!
Best song on the Rio album!
Damn, this brings back memories....
Same
Don't hold back! What a killer song, what a bass!!!
This song rocks balls!
Excelente recuerdazo !!! Que bellas épocas !! Que hermosa canción !!!
It's certainly all about the bass, the bass!
One of the best song from Duran Duran. Epic music 👍👍👍👍
An AMAZING track; truly ahead of its time for sure!!
What is ironic about this track, is it is relatively simple to play; however with live strings, guitars, live drums, and a few new and old synths, you can recreate this amazing track in many ways to sound like gold and then some.
Having grown up in the 80s, these guys were one of my idols and who inspired myself into this line of work. Having interviewed them on a few occasions, I can testify that they are all down to Earth, talented, & music icons!
Respects,
MARCUS Van STEUR
I love this album with the songs and the art that Patrick Nagel did the record album - its when I started like purple and pink together ❤
OMG!!! I LOVE THIS GROUP OF GEORGIOUS MEN! BEEN A HUGE FAN SINCE 1983
used to play this jam at my house parties in the 80s...
great song from the coolest band ever
Outstanding album. CLASSIC!
I think Duran Duran was the best band of the 80’s. Awesome MTV videos too….
Well that had me playing my imaginary finger drums and synthesiser! What a corker!
they started out great and just kept getting better.
2019...Still going strong!!!!!
I love Duran Duran ❤️❤️❤️❤️
2023 and touring with a new album!!!! ✌️
Outside of Funk music, this is unarguably the best bass track ever recorded.
Killer bass line from JT song written by SLB about JTs drug problem and slipped under his hotel door. Total love from SLB to JT
"John Taylor is the best bass player, that I have ever worked with." - Robert Palmer in 1987 interview
That's just Palmer being nice with a healthy dose of ridiculous hyperbole, considering he had worked with James Jamerson, Kenny Gradney, George Porter Jr., Chuck Rainey, Bob Babbit etc. any and all of whom could play rings around Taylor in their sleep. Taylor wrote some good lines here and there and was lucky enough to learn from Bernard Edwards, but he was pretty limited in what he could execute. His timing was always... challenged, and his feel was stiff. Even now that hasn't changed much. Lucky for him a good idea/bass-line always wins out in the end. The only bona-fide, session-level musician in Duran was Andy Taylor. He could really play.
@@GhostMillionairesTV Seems harsh. If i could pick up a bass and play like John, I'd be proud
@@GhostMillionairesTV what an daft post .... like your name ... Maybe you should disappear
Go away!! JT smokes all of them
@@dkmyww My Dad used to say "Daft" and "Disappear" quite a bit. You wouldn't be from Glasgow by chance?
My hubbies best mate was a double for John Taylor. R.I.P. Peter he will never forget you. With the exception of Mark King there was no better bassist Angela x
the bass at 2:35 is amazing
brings back memories! This is such a good song! The entire Rio album is fantastic!!!!
I saw them live two weeks ago in Atlanta. They were AWESOME!!!!!!❤❤❤❤I was hoping they played this song. They didn’t, but they were still awesome!!!! Duran Duran forever!!!!!!!
bring back the eighties.
seen your cat,iam a canine man
I was born in 92 and wish I could of lived in that era when this music was out, just ridiculously good.
Masterpiece!
They made all involved feel great!
Got to see the original lineup do this song in 2005, such a great song
Duran Duran + alcohol + sunshine = Heaven
JT gets free rain to FUNK ROCK OUT on this second album - wow - aren't we all glad he was a big fan of Bernard Edwards...I've been playing this for 36 years .......... think I'll put 'Late Bar' on Vinyl on the table........
Several versions, but i think this is their greatest, finest, most fearless song. Longer outro version's better got to say
Well said
OMG John Taylor, too fine!!! Great memories!!!
Durans best dance track by a mile!
This song always makes my mood!
Their best track. Great song.
great after 33 years!!
This is my favourite dd song
The clouds all scatter and we ride the outside lane
Para mi el mejor tema. Jamás me canso de escucharlo
I woke up with this song on my mind 2022
Mega band. Says a metal head🤟
Was 15 when this came out! Perfect age to totally enjoy all that Duran Duran put out ! Thanks!
The 80's were the best time for music!!!! No disrespect to the 60's!!!! One of my all time faves from Duran Duran!!!!
Total banger of a tune.
Bass. John Taylor bass. 'nuff said.
Duran Duran are musical Gods!!!
Hoooold back the rain
one of the best D2 songs ever!
Duran Duran Rocked! I would give anything to go back to the 80s!
Very very under rated 80's pop album..I think it's right up there with Micheal Jackson Thriller album to be honest...but it had balls..heavy bass and guitar rock..Duran were the ultimate boy band
they were not a 'boy band' but I agree with the rest (other than it being 'under-rated' as it's very much respected and usually mentioned in any 'best of the 80s albums' polls).
Agreed...was being a wise ass about the boy band though..prob because the Durans had talent...Lots!!unlike boy bands.Arcadia was a damn good effort as well.
Yeah - The arcadia album is great too.
Underrated? This was a product of the biggest of the biggest record corporations. This album was huge, it spawned the 2nd English invasion! When an English music magazine went into print with two members of the band on the cover for the first time, they couldn't keep it on the shelves. The record company was more than pleased because the cover photo was just the drummer and keyboard player, they thought what if we put the whole band? Huge huge huge money machine, but they rocked.
+Stick_Giraffe they were only underrated in that the old Boomer rock establishment didn't consider synthesizer music real rock. Which is just ridiculous. It didn't help that they were fabulously good looking either. Not with critics anyway, who only write about their opinions and wish they could create something close to Duran Duran. Jealousy is a funny thing. Those of us who were very young in the 80s knew these guys were something unique. Now gen x are the rock critics and writers and we get what Duran Duran and early 80s music were going for all along.
Oh my god , what a timeless gem , every time i hear it , the world spins so fast that i might fly off !!!!
WOMEN LOVED 😍 ❤️ THIS BAND
BACK IN THE 80,S!!!
