Ah, the Feuerzangenbowle....I grew up with an aunt from Germany who brought that tradition here. She had a big copper pot that sat on a stand, which she filled with red wine and fruit on the bottom. The literal translation--fire tongs bowl--references the tong that sits on top of the pot and holds that sugar cone. We had huge sugar cones imported from Germany. The rum was poured over it and lit on fire. It took quite some time to melt the whole thing. I've never actually seen it done in miniature like that which you had. That was very cute.
I love those memories. We were too young to drink the wine, of course, but we did get some of the fruit. It was yummy but strong. Lol. I've gone so far as to make one of my homemade hand sanitizers a Feuerzangenbowle scent. It's very strong, too. 😋

    • @Psi-Storm
      @Psi-Storm 4 роки тому +8

There is also a german cult movie called "Feuerzangenbowle" from 1944. It's about a teacher who gets dared from his friends to go back to school as a pupil. It's really popular in the big college citys. It's shown end of every year. Students mix their Feuerzangenbowle before hand, then take it with them watching the movie in the bigest lecture hall. Afterwards many bars also serve the drink that night. Quite a special day in college life over here.

1 more fun fact: Since you paid "Pfand" (deposit) for your mug of Glühwein, you can literally just wander off with it. Like the cup? Keep it... Need a "road Glühwein" zu get you home? Just take it and you'll have a memory in the form of the cup on top of it! - Many Glühwein Stands try to make use of that fun phenomenon by designing nice/memorable cups that entice people to nick them, so they earn more by selling the cups on top of the Glühwein... The heart-shaped cups toward the end of the video are a great example of that!

In all cities there are beautiful christmas markets and also every smaller city has one. Greetings from Hannover, the medieval part is my favourite thing! Especially hot mead, I highly recommend to check some of the different flavours out! And cudos for drinking that horn and staying upright, I manage to drink one and get a bit tipsy for around 15 minutes, but I've seen quite a few people not being able to handle such an amount. Problem is not the alcohol, but the sugar from the honey. The alcohol goes straight into your blood and gets you drunk within minutes if you are not used to it, and it's even worse when it's hot.
Also Schmalzkuchen is great, since I was a child I am able to find the huts selling it on a christmas market by scent from around 100 metres distance. xD

Thanks for making the video. I haven’t been to a Christmas market in 14 years (that’s how long I’ve lived in the US now) and I miss it every year. Your video made me feel so cozy and well entertained. I love all your videos, especially the German-American ones since I can relate so well! Please make more Christmas videos before it’s over. Also, can’t wait for Silvester and all the Berliners you’ll hopefully🤞be eating 😊.

Hey, Phil.. Deana was getting pretty LIT with the wine. We have a big Wurstfest here in Texas, but not as cool as there. Was at a Xmas festival in Kempten a while ago, the spiced wine was wonderful. Mid-December, It was super cold I remember, gloves, hat, coat, scarf..most was OK, but my toes were freezing, just had dress shoes on.☃️❄
    Thanks, video was great!!

Best first time going to a German Christmas market video this year. 😊 I really don't have a favorite. It's more like a checklist of stuff I need to get each year. 😁 Bratwurst, Crepes (Nutella & Cherries, Nutella & Amaretto, Yogurette), chocolate covered fruit (strawberries, pineapple), roasted almonds, Kartoffelpuffer (aka Reiberdatschi) with apple sauce, Steakbrötchen with onions, Glühwein, Feuerzangenbowle and Lumumba. There's just so much good stuff.

Next time try the 'Reibekuchen' (fried onions patato mix) with apfelmus. En for your sweet tooth: 'nurnberger obstler lebkuchen'.
My alltime favorite since I was a child. At Christmas time my grandma always sended us a large tin box with different lebkuchen from Nurnberg.

My sister - in - law is from Germany and when she was still fairly new to America she would fix a lot of German food for the family during visits .
Loved her German rum cake she used to make 😋
Now she eats very much like an American

Glad you tried Glühwein on it's own version first and finished off with the feuerzangenbowle. These are (in my opinion) 2 of the 3 classic Christmas market drinks. The other one would be Kinderpunsch. I always have this first and then get myself a Glühwein with Amaretto and at the end the Feuerzangenbowle

I come from German heritage on both sides of my family. I eat in German and Bavarian restaurants/markets whenever I can. I have yet to have any Gluhwein but have had other mulled wines. I have made my own mead, mixed it with apple cider, heated in pot and then stir it in the mug with a cinnamon stick. Awesome.

Great video!! How can you see all that and not feel Christmas?! My favorite part, though, was that after two drinks Deana was trashed!! 🤣 Luckily, you found her a meat stick and she kinda mellowed out. It would've been hillarious if all you did was drink. Phil, you would've been carrying her home!! 😋

"All you need is a stick of meat and gluhwein and you'll have a merry Christmas!" Haha! So cute! Love your channel! We've been living in Wien for 16 years now. Love Christmas markets. That one looks amazing though! I love the rösti (I think that's what it's called... fried potatoes with speck and onions) or the baked dough on a rolling pin like thing... can't remember what they're called...Baum something...) or crepes, or Belgian waffles on a stick, or pumpkin soup in a bread bowl or Heiß Maroni! Now I can't wait until Christmas!! Or blueberry Glühwein! Yum!! :) Keep up the great channel!! :)

My favorites at the christmas market are very classic bratwurst and mulled wine (although I'm of the same opinion as Phil and would immediately exchange the mulled wine for beer)! Visit the Christmas market in Erfurt, the atmosphere with the giant cathedral in the background is unbelievable! Of course even better in the twilight!

It contains cloves, cinnamon, slices of whole oranges (slice with the peele) and sometimes even cardamom. It´s well spiced red whine and needs to simmer quite a time to reach the full flavor. But you don´t want to cook it because the alcohol would be gone XD so it´s a process to watch well.
