That's what Grog is, is watered down Rum. Since Rum has been made and man have been sailing the seas of the world up till the 1900's, Grog was a big drink on the sailing ships. They watered it down 1) because water back then was bad to drink and the alcohol killed bacteria in the water, and 2) it stretched it out and made it last longer. Also that's where we get the saying " feeling grogy".

Welcome back you two! Here's a little bit about Feuerzangenbowle: There is no cherry in a Feuerzangenbowle. The base is red wine, orange juice, clove, staranis, slices of orange and lemon (basically Glühwein).heat it all up, on top (on a steel-tongue) is a sugar cone. The cone is drenched in rum (at least 50% alc. because that's the concentration where it is easily flammable without heating it up first).
It's a nice social event to makle it at home. But ther are two downsides to it: 1. A design for bad decisions. It's a high alcohol concentration and both the sugar and the temperature excellerates the intoxication. 2. Be prepared for the worse headache of your life the next morning! Again, that's because of the sugar.
To illustrate what I'm saying, I recommend the 1944 movie "Die Feuerzangenbowle" Plot: a couple of academics meet for Feuerzangenbowle and share stories about the pranks they pulled when they were in school. The main character went to a private school and never experienced any of this so it is decided that he poses as a student and goes back to school. (talking about bad decisions). It's quite a cheesy movie, but amusing nevertheless.

The Eggnog in the US is sold without alcohol but you are supposed to add rum or brandy to it. I’ve never drunk it straight nor have we ever given it to children. I see it in half gallons, but I’ve never seen a gallon. But we like the super rich kind from a local dairy chain that I don’t think is available outside my area (Oberweis in the Chicago area) and it’s sold in half gallons.

    • @jessicaely2521
      @jessicaely2521 4 роки тому

Not in Florida. It's sold both ways in Florida. Of course you have to go to a liquor store to get spiked eggnog. Its spiked with rum, brandy, or whiskey. I always go with rum eggnog.

Be careful if you see a red Punsch with alcohol inside. Because in a Punsch you are allowed to add up to 25% of water to make the drink cheaper. So only drink Glühwein, because there must be 100% wine in it (okay plus cinnamon etc.)

Glühwein you drink at the Christmas market. But Feuerzangenbowle, that one you have to make yourself to get a proper taste. The small cups, they are a really poor substitute. It messes up the measures a little bit. Plus, sharing the Feuerzangenbowle is part of the experience.

Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit und Frölicher Weinachten aus Dänemark!
Glögg is swedish by the way. To get the authentic experience with this drink, you must add almond splits, rasins and a pinch of fresh orange juice to the pot and let it slowly heat up for several hours on the stove before serving it with a bit of added snaps and a long spoon for the “granola” in the bottom of the glass.
And yes mead (Mjød) is a divine beverage! Skål!

Glögg is literally one of the few things I miss after moving from Sweden to Germany. There are so many kinds though, and you probably didn't have the best. I think the one you get at ikea is pretty decent. 😉
And traditionally you should put almonds and raisins in it, to make a kind of spicy Glühweinmüsli. For getting drunk, Glühwein is better, since it doesn't taste that much.

In the USA and Canada you get the eggnog base in the dairy section and add alcohol and spices at home. Every family is proud of their own recipe. Hot or cold chocolate needs to be with milk only. Ikea in Canada sells Glögg (# 9).

Just found you on UA-cam and I'm watching a lot of your videos in the last two days 😅. So seems like that I really like your Vlog. After I saw this video I just thought that Phil should give Eierpunsch a second chance. But you guys should make it yourself from scratch... I really don't like the christmas market one too because it's mostly made out of a bad white wine and bad Eierlikör so there's no reason why it will get better. I'm always making a few bottles of "Hudson Bay Rum" for baking and stuff, with that one I'm doing the Eierlikör and out of that one I'm doing the Eierpunsch with more rum but it's way better than the christmas market one.

Here in the US different people have different preferences as to which alcohol they like in their Eggnog. That is a main reason stores sell unadulterated Eggnog, and you add your own booze.
Also, most stores can't sell alcohol (special licensing) so can't sell adulterated Eggnog.

I grew up in a family w/ near total German ancestry in Wisconsin. We drank our eggnog warm w/ bourbon or brandy, not rum, although all the prepackaged instructions say rum. We made mulled wine rather than buying gluhwein, cuz like u said, gluhwein can b 2 sweet sometimes. N of course, warm spiced apple cider. Made w/ non-alcoholic cider, adults r welcome 2 add schnapps or bourbon or rum... Merry Christmas! 🎄

In the US, we get the eggnog cold but mix it with rum and heat it up, usually served in a punch bowl at Christmas parties, Kids can just drink the eggnog right out of the fridge, before any added rum. I have made mead a few times and once poured half a mug of it and half a mug of apple cider, nuke it then mix with a cinnamon stick.

I have a question. This has been the year of discovering my German side. Some family from Germany came here and we got to meet this summer. I've been ordering some of the German sweets you guys tried. Now I'm wondering, is there one main go to alcohol in Germany? You know, like Russia is known for vodka, Mexico for tequila... And if you really want to drink great Glühwein from the supermarket you have to buy "Altdeutscher Glühwein" from the company "Kunzmann" ... the "älteste Glühweinkellerei Deutschlands" (so basically the oldest recipe for Glühwein in the world, I guess) ... This is really awesome stuff, and with 12 % alcohol it's the most "powerful" Glühwein I know. ;)

@@DeanaandPhil Thanks for the answer. The "Altdeutsche Glühwein" is the one in the "Bügelflasche" (swing-top/flip-top/clip-top bottle - I don't know, which one is the right translation).
And there is also a "Bio"-variation of this Glühwein, but I have never tried it, as it has a little less alcohol! ^^

In Belgium we have advocaat which is basically eggnog without milk, over here they get it in tiny cups along with a cup of coffee.

    My family has two favorites:
    Irish Coffee for Christmas morning
Hot Buttered Rum for Christmas Eve
(I make my own butter balls with butter, honey and spices. The pre made mix is truly vile!)

Eggnog and Eierpunsch are VERY polarizing. Either you like it or you don't there is no middle ground!! I'm looking forward to giving it a try this winter - and I hope it doesn't smell too much like egg/ei - that smell is disgusting! Your reviews are great on these... I knew exactly what you meant with "It tastes like college...."

I'd love to see you guys do an episode where you try various kinds of sausages like knackwurst, weisswurst, kasekriner, krakauer, bockwurst etc. and give your ratings for them.

I didn't know that germans have their own versions of hot chocolate or eggnog. Wow. But then again many Christmas traditions came from Germany. Including the Christmas tree.

Hot chocolate actually originated in the Americas, Mexico in particular. Cacao was domesticated in the region and the indigenous people there dried, roasted and ground the seeds, creating chocolate. And it was mainly consumed as hot chocolate. The Spanish introduced it to Europe and they switched the hot water for milk
