  • My June 2022 sowing of Pilosocereus robinii - Key tree cactus from Big Pine Key and two larger plants from Lower Matecumbe Key I grew from two thimble sized seedlings given to me by a conservator - all growing fast. From recent info I've seen, cultivated and potted ex-situ cacti of this species are likelier to flower and set fruit than the wild plants in habitat. A bunch of these are going back to the Big Pine Key homestead that gave me the fruit to germinate, along with Simpson's apple cactus (Harrisia fragrans - big yellow fruit) grown from seed from the same location. I plan to grow a percentage to branching maturity and propagate them by seed for Floridians. What some call Florida's own "saguaro" as it is by far our largest cactus at over 30ft tall, this species is endangered and wouldn't have a chance here if Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden hadn't done the decades-long heavy lifting of saving them. There are populations also in northern Cuba and a few islands in the Bahamas. (Finally, fourth try for a nice video this morning is a charm) Please visit cactusislandacres.com to see my other cacti and our blog.
