    I did this last year with an old Parodia magnifica that had grown top-heavy. The top had kept getting fatter and fatter, but the bottom eight inches stayed small. I didn't leave enough of a stump, though, so the pups are growing very slowly and won't be ready to pick off for several years. Lesson learned. Leave enough of a stump to nourish the incoming pups.

    Recently had to cut one of my lobivia due to a mushy area about an inch above the soil. I propagated the top and it’s thriving. Left the bottom part in the original pot and added cinnamon.
    After watching this video I went out to check on the bottom inch stump, and what do you know…my first pup is growing off the side! 🥰

    Great video Ana!! It's a great way to increase your collection!!! I just had to start a bunch of offsets from a " rainbow bursts", peach color Echinobivia . Root mealies destroyed the mother with the help of ants!! But I got a good handful of offsets from it!! So, a good save!! I wonder, since it has such a tendency to grow tall, if you experimented and cut the very top meristem from one of the offsets after it rooted, would it turn into a candelabra cluster as it matured?🤔🌵 It would be interesting to see. Since the plant has a tendency to be single. Thanks for sharing your propagation method with us all!! I'm sure many will be using this method to increase their collection!! Good stuff!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Las Vegas, have a wonderful evening!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌺🌴🌻🌹🌳🌷🌲🏵🌿😃👍

    • @emmitstewart1921
      @emmitstewart1921 2 роки тому +1

      That would have about the same effect as those people who push a hot wire into the meristem to make plant clusters. I'd let the pup grow until it was about six or more inches before doing it. if you could get a lab to do a tissue culture with the piece of meristem you cut off, you could get another plant out of the deal

  • @ellamihaela333

    Hi, I just made a cutting on my cactus and I followed your advice and applied cinnamon on the cutting of the parent cactus. Should I just leave the cinnamon on it and will it be absorbed while the cutting dries or should I reapply cinnamon on it? Does it have to be a thick layer of cinnamon?
    Also regarding the cut section, I will let it callus, just as it is, for as you said 3 days to a week (I guess it's safe when it's not moisture anymore). I suppose I don't have to apply cinnamon on the cut section, right? And after I plant the cut section, how often should I water it until it grows roots?
    Thank you! I like your cactuses! 🌵

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  4 місяці тому

      On the parent cactus, I leave the cinnamon on it. No need to reapply. For the cutting, I also apply cinnamon if it has a big cut. I just mist the top of the soil until roots form. A little moisture will encourage it to root. But if you live in a high humidity place, misting may not even be necessary and they will root in the soil just fine. Once it roots, water as you would your cactus.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  2 роки тому +1

      It is best to do the cut and propagate during its growing season. Spring or summer is the best time. If your winter is mild, you can do it early fall.

There are about 6 long stalks that literally droop over the sides of the pot ( they are not dead but scraggly and take up alot of room) and in the last few months, I have noticed about 7 pups growing in the middle at the base. I rescued many cacti from being thrown away after an estate sale. I have NEVER had a cactus before. There were multiple varieties and variable health. Several were columns that were rotting st he base and were up to 3 feet tall. I believe some are Lovinia. I cut them as you said. The bases are doing great, but all the tops went soggy on me (they are now in cactus heaven). Maybe I watered too soon. I also decapitated what I think is an Echinopsis. The base of the top portions measure 6 inches. How do I plant the top without the squishifying(I made a new word) the other cacti died from?
