- This is the best way I have learned how to propagate my Opuntia Cactus. This video provides you with information on how to increase your cactus garden.
When you are making cactus cuttings cut at the base of the pad. Dab the end into some rooting hormone. Use a very light soil media. A mix of compost, Silica Sand/ Pool filter sand, permatil, and perlite is what I like to use. Place your new cutting into your pot with the soil media and that is it! Wait three months and you should have a pot full of roots. Keep the new plants somewhere protected for the first 3 months while your new plant is developing roots.

Cactus can be awesome plants to grow! What are some of your favorite cactus and succulents to grow in your garden?
One of my favs is the Snow Cactus. Not the Old Man cactus. ...It has a couple dozen tall ( about 14 inch) thin pads in a pot covered with very long hair. I don't know the names yet of all of them yet but I love propagating them. Eve's Needle is awesome too. My large pot of Edgars Baby ( Dragon Fruit ) is beautiful in the hanger I put them in.
How would I know if my cacti are edible?
You have a great voice. Have you ever done any voice work? I'd buy a book on tape if you were reading it.
TJ Wash thank you! I have not done voice work but it’s encouraging to hear you say that. Maybe I should!
I just bought several big agave parryi, golden barrels, blue glow agave, blue yucca rostrata, desert spoon, agave tequilana, and my favorite, a 14 foot agave Macdougalii, and purple prickly pear, San Pedros , and some round paddle cactus which I wanted to cut because the bottoms look scarred and brown , thank you for the video, off to cutting I go. I also think one of my barrel cactus is going to die because it’s a little yellow and definitely a parryi because I pulled a leaf and it’s rotting .
great tip on the pool sand. thanks
I've watched a few cactus propagate videos, this one is the best.
I’m gonna use the same process but for edible cactus wish me luck because oh man that stuff taste so good grilled thank you for this video
Ohhhh ! Saw your video just in time. I was going to use my 'beach sand' !!!! Perfect timing ! Thank you !
I bought an opuntia from a box store and it had LOADS of little pads coming off of it. I decided to take 6 of them (there's still 4 on the mother) and try to propagate them if I could, fully expecting they would fail. I used a gel rooting medium, left 3 to callus and put the other three right in soil (with rooting medium). In the end, all 6 were successful and now I have 7 opuntia and idk what to do with them as I only have a tiny greenhouse haha
LOL. Amazing. Glad they all lived
Cool, thanks. I'm from Canada, but have lived in Jamaica for the last 9 years. Been doing some work on the south coast lately where there are Opuntia. Scooped a couple, and propagating them in soil that's a mix of clay and sand (clay from the soil in my yard, and sand from a beach). They're growing surprisingly fast, although next time it will be less soil and more sand. They need better drainage.
Interesting thing is that when the new "pads" shoot out, they start with pure thorns, apparently to prevent any critters from eating them (wild goats and hogs here, although they're both invasive). I'm hopeful that in the future I'll get flowers, and enough new pads to try eating them.
How fast was it? Im gonna get mine in the mail a few days and I’m excited to grow it.
Love cactus...beautiful!!!
Good propogation video...
do they produce tunas?
I took a healthy clipping from someone’s injured cactus in my neighborhood.. I am so excited to find your howto!
Free plants are the best!
Great video. To the point and organized. You make me feel like I can master this easily. Thanks and please post more videos.
Thank you for your feedback! Feels good to know this video helped you!
Beautiful video
Nice
I love cactus. I love the beauty of it. I want to learn to grow them. Thanks for roothing them. I don't know how to start them to root.
im letting the pads I ordered scab out but i think tomorrow's the day for planting.
Raining today, but going to do 50 25 25 of Vermiculite, yard sandy topsoil, and potting mix.
Gonna be a fun winter Project but i need to find my rooting powder
Did that particular cactus produce delicious prickly pear fruits? What was the flavor?
all sand is silica and pool sand is actually extra fine and can hold more water than other grades of sand (can be good or bad depending on what you're doing). my experience is that even if the bag says the sand was washed and is safe for horticultural use: wash it again anyway. multipurpose sand or coarse builders sand from big box stores work great for stuff like this just be sure to wash them first. most recently I brought home quickcrete brand "washed" multipurpose sand from Lowes. before using it, I put some in a plastic bucket and added an equal amount of tap water. when I measured the TDS it was over 400ppm of inorganic salts when my tap water measured 60ppm. that is what burns and kills plants.
I use long cooking tongs and a long kitchen knife. Works well!
how often do you water? and can you put them directly into the ground, instead of a pot first?
Thank you very much for posting this video! I followed your tips and would you believe the prickly pear cactus pads I have are starting to bloom! 👍🙂
If I like to grow it in the pot rather than on ground can I use potting mix indoor and indoor?
Thank you so much for this. Excellent instruction!
I got some Waffle Tongs at Walmart that have a coating on them for about $3.00. They aren't very long but the large spines go through the waffle squares. They help me a lot!! For big cactus I have welders glove with the tongs.
Thank you for sharing your cacti gardening experience! I’m off to Walmart now!!! Lol
@@ColorfulGardener You are so very welcome! You can save a trip and i'm not sure if all walmarts have them.. and go to www.amazon.com/s?k=waffle+tongs&ref=nb_sb_noss_ . They are over $9.00 off right now. Thanks so much for the great videos!
Lol that's what I used too! Not waffle tongs but some type of tongs for the kitchen. Still dealing with the hairs from my 1st attempt at handling my lil prickers. 😁
I had a Santa Rita with the really tiny spines. It made me believe that maybe she was the first nun to use a ruler on a kid's hand.
Best video and explanation! I've seen
You can go three months between waterings?
I just got some paddles. Can I go straight from rooting powder to the ground?
How many days does it take to fruit?
Straightforward and helpful, answered all my questions, thank you
You are so cute, what a Teddy bear!
I only root left to my Christmas cactus, how to revive
Super helpful! Thanks man. Great channel.
I got a cactus pad of the same variety you were just planting. I planted it in the ground just as you showed and it seemed to be doing just fine. Then one day I saw start a shoot out the top of it which I thought was a new cactus pad. Unfortunately the shoot just kept growing and growing and growing and growing straight up and is now at least a foot tall and pencil thin. Now the bottom of the actual cactus pad has rotted and I am wondering how to propagate from this shoot. Should I just lay it flat in the dirt and let roots come out and will pads grow up out of that? or should I try cutting it into small pieces and try planting those? Or should I just try planting this long shoot straight up into the dirt? Please help I really want this cactus to succeed. Any suggestions?
My cactus has risen from the ground in a pot, what does this mean? Looks like something is pushing it out.
I have a question about this, about how long do they take to root and start growing?
two weeks. several of my pads of different species have rooted after two weeks. during the growing season.
Can I use a pot that is a bit bigger than the sizes you used for the size of the pads?
Awesome tips man!
is that dark night opuntia?
Love your videos! Just wondering, at 6:22 you show a mint green spineless cactus in a green pot in your driveway. It's beautiful! What is it called? I'd love to get one!
Great video! Could I use beach sand instead of pool sand? I could probably rinse any salt residue with tap water... what do you think?
Oooooo, thank you for this! I just got some huge pads and I am on my way to starting my dream desert garden! 🌵🌵
Hii, Josh, how long does it take to get one new leave?
I want to start but I don't have a lot of patience. 😁
Awesome Thank You
I like the spray head that you using, is that a brass shower head? Where did you get it from?
Cool!.. thanks.
The dog was like..Naah, what a waste of time :)
Are they edible?
When is the best time in it's cycle to propagate cactus?
Hi Josh
Are all pad cactus will produce fruits or they have different variety that will produce fruits?
I would say they all produce fruits
Hi, what is the name of this opuntia?
Have you planted cactus pads from the supermarket produce section?
I’m wondering as well
you can do it.
I love to watch your VDO . i learn a lot how to take care my cactus garden :)))
So no need to let the cutting callous or heal? You just pot it?
Can I just plant them straight into the ground or do I need to pot them first
You can. But by having them in a pot you have more control of moving them if the spot you originally put them doesn’t work out
Can these cacti be grown indoors as a houseplant?
No they need a lot of light to grow
hey josh! can you show us how these are looking now?
You can add at least 5-10 pads. Last February, I did a cutting with 1 pad. After a duration 6 month, I had 13 pads more. It was an Opuntia Dillenii
Got some cactus at a neighboring retail. Now I am an expert I can stealth steal some "clippings" ...lol. guerilla garden sourcing!!!!
In France, we say : good fences make good neighbours! 😂😂😂 Opuntia dillenii is probably the best fence 👍
So you watered right away then put in partial shade? Great info btw!
Yup, that’s correct. In my climate the sun can be really harsh on young cactus cuttings.
@@ColorfulGardener Thank you!
Get yourself a pair of TONGS, like for cooking, that have the coated ends. Keeps your hands away from the spines!
Hello !,What type of Opuntia is it?
Hello! This is Opuntia violacea macrocentra
@@ColorfulGardener Thanks so much !
@@ColorfulGardener and fruits are edible?
Thank you for your video. I recently received a cutting of a rare cacti. The cutting is small, just a leaf. But this being winter, are there precautions I should take before potting them?
What about Paver's sand?
Nope, just pool filter sand. Any other sand is going to have harsh chemicals in the media.
whats a rooting media??
just googled it. why have i never heard ot it! ugghhh so cool!
Do a update video!!
Can I have some cactus seeds
I use plastic kitchen tongs to handle Cactus.
I love how he accidentally calls the cactus her
Hey man would you sell me a pad
