      Hi could you help me? I have a san pedro and noticed it's produced two new ones at the bottom without me doing anything. Can these be left to grow like that? Or should they always be cut off?

    Very useful video, Lyn. Yes, I’m one of those that cover my offsets to get them to root faster because our humidity here is always under 10%. When I leave them out, many shrivel up even before they root. Thank you Lyn for all the learnings. 🙂👍🏼

    Great video Lyn!!! Echinopsis are fun to propagate cause they are so easy!! There is rarely any chance for failure, and they grow so quickly!!! Believe it or not, my lophos were started from mature cut tops I bought from a guy I knew in high school. Of course I knew what he was going to do with them. At least I saved a couple of their lives and still have them today!! The parents of your little babies!!! But they were relatively easy to start. I just set them on top of some sand and misted them daily. And in a few weeks they put out roots! And lived happily ever after!! Of course I've never tried to take any pups off them since because I like them to put out as many as possible to make a nice showie cluster!!! Thanks for sharing this video Lyn!!! From Morris park in the Ozarks to across the Emerald Isle, have a great weekend!!!!! Peace,Love,Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌹🌴🌷🌿🌸🌻🍀🌺

    Great video Lyn. I do like the clumping look but there does come a point when it’s time to remove some. Not sure if it’s true that if you let them clump they are less likely to flower, as you say I’ve seen huge clumps with tons of flowers too. Maybe some types like the Matucana polzii it’s true because they form pups all over them rather than around the base, if an areole is occupied with a pup then that will prevent a flower bud from forming on that particular areole. Thank you for sharing with us as always Lyn, from Edith & myself to you and Hans, have a wonderful evening and weekend 😊❤️🌵☀️🌺🌼🏜

    As a new cacti-owner, I have two different types of cacti I brought back from Surprise, Arizona.. from my mother's garden. I am off to transplant them now! Any tips for cacti owners in Northern regions? I live in Michigan.. I am thinking I will need supplemental lighting, possibly heat through our winters. Can anyone in my same climate help me out with a few tips?

      So happy you loved my outro haha, thats fantastic you have two different types of cacti from your Mothers garden, it depends on the type of cacti you have but a lot of cacti can be very cold hardy in winter if they can be kept dry and protected from rain in winter, I use grow lights on my indoor cacti with the ones that are not cold hardy and have to be overwintered indoors, but I move them out again in Spring once the weather warms up from late April early May, happy growing to you and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Michigan from the Emerald Isle XXXX

    Thank you for this informative video, Lyn! Do you know if this is also possible with the pups of a Lophophora williamsii Caespitosa? Mine has many pups already and I really want to propagate it, but even after 5-6 years it hasn't flowered for me yet. So I'm thinking of separating some of the pups to create separate plants.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Vyen :-D with Lophophora it can be very difficult to re root the pups especially with the caespitosa as it grows very tight with all the pups that rely on the deep tuber root, it is possible to root them but it is a very difficult process and not very successful, if I was you I would leave them on them the Loph, Lophophora caesoitosa takes much longer to flower than the Loph wiliamsii and the caespitosa can take 20 years or more to flower, my Caespitosa I have had for over 20 years but it has never flowered, but all my other Lophs flower even though many are much younger, but it will be fantastic when ours flower in the future

    Hi! I’m a new subscriber and am so excited to find your channel! I’m only recently learning about the proper care of succulents and cacti, but I had unknowingly cared for three different types of large succulents, which have survived only by the Grace of G-d and my horrible habit of forgetting to water them! I’ve since repotted them in a good succulent/cacti soil, have successfully propagated them and am proud to say that they are finally thriving and look beautiful.
    I know this video is about cacti, and I did watch your older videos, specifically about Aloe Vera, but I wasn’t sure if you would see a comment on it, so I hope you don’t mind my asking here. I have a large Aloe (I think I’ve had it about ten years) that used to be a “double” plant. The one side was dying and so I cut it off thinking I’d sacrifice one for the good of the other. To my surprise, four babies grew from the stalk that I cut! I’ve since repotted them, and the original plant, which I lovingly call “Big Momma,” is huge. She has a very long stalk and is top heavy. I don’t want to lose her, which is why I’m asking for help. I’ve been watching a lot of videos on succulents, and I think I’ve learned that I can cut her off at the base of the stalk, which would result in the stalk propagating with new babies. If I took the information I’ve learned properly, I should then be able to place Big Momma on top of a dry pot of soil, which would result in her growing new roots, allowing me to repot her and not deal with balancing the long stalk which has caused her to be unstable, balance wise. Is this correct? I don’t want to do anything that would jeopardize her safety, but I’m also afraid of losing her if I leave her the way she is.
    I live in Pennsylvania (East Coast of the USA), just outside of Philadelphia. We get very warm and humid summers, but our winters are extremely cold and we get snow, so I can’t plant her outside. I’d appreciate any advice/guidance you can give me. Thank you in advance and thank you for sharing your beautiful cacti, succulents and knowledge with us. 🙏🏻💜

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 роки тому +1

      Hi there :-D so happy you found my channel, and thank you so much for subscribing, thats fantastic news you have four babies grow from the side of your Aloe that was dying, and Big Momma sounds amazing, yes the good news is you can cut her off from the base, and then over time new Aloe babies will re grow from around the base, and the top part you can then plant up as a cutting and she will re grow new roots over time, when you cut her off I would leave her unpotted for about a week to allow the cut part to 'callus' over heal over before planting into dry succulent soil mix, you can also put some cinnamon powder over the cut to help to encourage rooting too. If you didn't want to cut her you can also insert a cane into the pot and loosely tie garden wire or thin garden rope around her and the cane to support her, I sometimes have to do this with some of my Aloes that grow top heavy, and I place a rock in the pot to balance out the weight as well as tie up the tall stems to a cane, I hope this helps, and thanks so much again for subscribing and for your wonderful comment, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Pennsylvania for a wonderful Sunday today XXXX

      Desert Plants of Avalon Thank you so much!!! I appreciate your help and your kind words! I did try to support her, but the stalk is almost two feet long and twists (probably from being moved to different places on my windowsill and trying to turn towards the sun) and she’s a good three feet across so I couldn’t figure out how to attach her. I’m going to hold my breath and cut - thank you for letting me know about the cinnamon and not putting her in dirt right away! I’ll let you know when she sprouts roots! Thank you again! XXX

    Hey lyn, as winter is coming do you think that I would be able to keep my cactus in my small unheated plastic greenhouse in winter? With a little bit of bubblewrap protection and maybe the less hardy types moving indoors? Also as my climate is pretty mild for winter, do you think I could grow outside aloe vera provided I give it shelter from a bush of some sort? And cover it up for winter?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 роки тому +1

      Hi there :-D I would definitely bring your plants inside the house for Winter, as the high humidity e get here in UK and Ireland is the biggest threat for our cacti and succulents, Aloe vera is very sensitive to low temperatures and high humidity, some cacti like the Echinopsis and Rebutia's can take very low winter temps without heating but the majority would need a minimum of 5C /41F with the UK climate, I would definitely bring them inside to be on the safe side :-D thanks so much for your wonderful support and comments and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a sunny Sunday XXXX

    What is the name of the taller cactus that has the 4 ribs in the video where you are talking about gloves, at about 2:40 into it?
    Also, can you pot several small pups into a large pot?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  Рік тому +1

      Hi Dolores :-D its a Cereus repandus, yes you can pot several pups into a large pot, is best to choose a pot that is wider and not too deep, as having a pot that is too deep may encourage the pups to rot if there is too much soil in the deep pots, but a wider shallower pot is ideal for planting a few pups together, thanks so much Dolores for your wonderful comment and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXX

    I've discovered that you can also put your finger on the very top where the prickers are all pointing outward, just to hold it steady, & just pluck off the pups with a spoon, although you have to be careful not to use to much force, or you might launch the pup across the room.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  6 місяців тому

      Hi Barry :-D thanks so much for your email and looking at the photos i think its best to repot your Echinopsis into a wider pot, you can wait until the spring but if you wanted to repot into a wider pot now you still can, use dry cactus soil and don't water until the Spring, I think your Echinopsis is growing taller instead of wider as it is searching for more light, these cacti love a very sunny position, a south facing window is ideal or you can use an led plant grow light if you have this Echinopsis in a window that doesn't receive any sun, don't water now until the spring otherwise these cacti can still grow taller and stretch out in winter if they are not given a dry winter rest period, happy growing Barry and have a fantastic plant powered Thursday today XXXXX

    I just watched this and wanted to thank you for all the information. Two years ago when my mum passed I brought home a large 'globule' (don't know if that's the correct term) which had apparently been knocked off her very large and old echinopsis hybrid some months previously. I put in a pot of cactus compost and waited....and waited! Eventually it rooted and many months after that I was thrilled to see a pup emerging, the another. Now it has 12 pups and just recently two flower buds have appeared. I am keeping my fingers crossed to see the beautiful flowers - which were the reason I brought home the globule in the first place, as mum's was in flower the day we were there to help clear her home. I feel mum would be glad I am keeping it going, along with the half-dead Thanksgiving cactus that also came home with me...that has flowered three times since!
