Cactus Garden, Raised Coral Boulder Beds
We decided it was time for me to construct the long-anticipated Caribbean and Florida stone cactus garden. I muscled it all together in the space of a week and incorporated the completed Puerto Rico bed that I built in 2022. The outer patio stone walk-around is now finished and featured in this video. The garden is a work in progress I'd like to finish this fall if not next spring. Given the abundance of fossil coral boulders locally, a gorgeous and thriving outdoor cactus garden in Florida is an untapped frontier with a lot of market potential. I would charge $25k -$30k to build and plant this feature garden for clients. Each cairn bed will showcase a particular island's cactus speciation, including Hispaniola, Cuba, South Florida, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and Lesser Antilles. I assembled the heavy and medium stones like Lincoln Logs, chinked with smaller ones and will use expanding foam insulation as an easily repairable mortar to lock them in, hold in soil. In a few months the hardened foam ages to look like old mineral stained mortar I’ve seen on S. Florida coral fence walls. I’ll extract some sand in several wells to make space for 30” depth of stable outdoor cactus substrate. We liked the stump too much to nix it so I excavated the massive root ball and chainsawed it at the soil line (grey wood), filled hole and set the stump back down. This prevented eventual rot and a 4'x5' bulb sinkhole. Around the stump I assembled a heavy boulder catwalk for maintenance that leads to all internal areas and four stepdown exits (It also turned into a Hotwheels racetrack for our cat Angus!) When the stump rots I'll remove remnants and add a second buccaneer palm to match the one we’re planning on putting just outside the stonework edge. All will be protected during our short winter by a knock-down hoop frame and heavy mill plastic with heater. I'm hoping there are small clumping succulents similar to Echeveria that are native to the Caribbean, as they would be awesome "party favors" for the many coral boulder nooks and mini wells in parts of the cactus catwalk. Considering small agave species and bromeliads.

My June 2022 sowing of Pilosocereus robinii - Key tree cactus from Big Pine Key and two larger plants from Lower Matecumbe Key I grew from two thimble sized seedlings given to me by a conservator - all growing fast. Wow! What a beautiful collection! I noticed you keep your cacti under cover...I was wondering if keeping a pilosocereus in a pot with cactus soil exposed to the weather in central florida will cause it to rot from too much moisture? Thank you, Michael! The genus actually does really well here outdoors in the warm season. From March to late November I keep them outside. Even south of Fort Myers they did well in half-mineral mix beds for years, where even in winter I hit them with the hose once a month. I water them once a week in tents during summer. The P. albisummus were outside all summer even with a solid and scary month plus of rain days. My soil mix is on the website blog side bar menu, and I recommend using Eco-Complete black lava plus some fine pea gravel for ballast, drainage.

      The Ziploc baggie method for four months in microwave sterilized soil has been excellent. For some reason, orders of these seeds have yielded very few St. Croix plants (old seed?), but I have three that made it from those small seed lots. Nothing like fresh harvested seeds from your own plants. The Royenii in the videos are now the size of cigarettes and twice as thick.

      i used to live there in winters. bought a set of Walsh a2000 pipes about 5 years ago. Very nice. But found that I really couldnt play for more than 8 minutes without my arm near falling off. Ditched the bellows and now use air compressor in my garage feeding a fairchild low pressure regulator and then the pipes. Wonderful to be able to set pressure to make A E A all in tune and then have it stay that way for days at a time. I once visited Joe Shannon in Chicago and watched him playing a huge Taylor Uilleann set. He had a lot more muscle than I at about same age. But, still he had taken off the fourth regulator because he couldnt keep up with it. You have a long run ahead before you reach my point.

    • @jfreeman343
      @jfreeman343 6 років тому

      Love the compressor trick, might come in handy some day with my smallpipes. The popular electronic Red Pipes are pricey at a grand, last I checked, but offer different realistic sounds and modes like major/minor, Renaissance, sackpipa and other European chanters. Still, nothing like the sound of real reeds. March is "Hell Month" as you can imagine, and I'll be completely spent after St. Patrick's Day. A full Uilleann set looks like it takes a lot of wind.
