Really liking the transparency as to what is/is not pre prepared by the food team in recent vids! Makes the normals much more normal.
I think the normals are still normal either way. Just showing off their improv vs cook to recipe skills.
Yup, same here! It really makes things so much more authentic and actually gives a good idea of the skills of the normals. It was really getting to the point where the dishes were getting so complicated and fancy, that there's simply no way a real "normal" would actually come up with it or be able to actually make it. (Yes, I know that after all this time and experiance the normals aren't exactly "normal" anymore, but still I think my point is valid)
I agree, I like this change a lot
Me too. Absolutely nothing wrong with Food Team help (I’d actually like to see their involvement more whether it’s on screen or not), but it’s nice to know when the normals are actually normaling.
I do have to say I was surprised to hear that the food team normally comes up with the recipes. So the normals are judged for the meal, yet they're only executing.
I think Mike nailed this brief for the simple fact that the ingredients he used were in line with the implements he used to cook them. He used things readily available at most grocery stores on a limited budget (Except the dried mushrooms.)
Go to an ethnic or heath store to find things like dried mushrooms.
To be fair you can find dried mushrooms in most UK super markets so even those are readily accessible if just a little expensive (about £3 for something like 25g which you'll probably use all of in one dish)
Mike and Jamie both actually completed the challenge. Barry made raw fish. He'd have ruined a toaster and probably burnt the building down with this try.
Kush just laughing uncontrollably whilst watching the carnage unfold is all of us watching this video. 😂
Love it 😂
I hope we get a chef version of this I'd love to see what Ben and the food team can cook up with this limitation
Kush vs Ben
@@jesseprins4744 was thinking this. With Kush getting in front of the camera more, would love to see a good chef v chef. Though, we haven't seen James in a while...
@@kashtrey then let's do Kush vs Ben vs James (maybe throw Poppy in too for laughs and more food knowledge)

Quick pickle has become Jamie’s version of Ben’s early episode mint.
I want someone to love me the way Jaimie loves a quick pickle.
I had never done a quick pickle until seeing it here on Sorted. Now we do quick pickling a lot during the summer as our veggies come in. I can't wait for this year! Thanks, Sorted team.
I unsubscribed after 5 years because, as you put it, it feels like you've given up. Aside from your pimping of BASF.
😂😂😂
@@alhollywood6486 What's your problem? Are you one of those "GMO's BAD" types?
The salmon skewers in the toaster was a bold move! With the added benefit that for a week or so, your toast will now have a nice fishy aroma.
"Nice"...?
@@janmay3901 Yes "nice". That's how I read it at least.
Yeah, I would recommend wrapping it in parchment paper first for sure
@TheTruthPenguin truly asking... parchment would be safe in a toaster? Won't start a fire?
@@janmay3901 not unless it's right up against the heating element directly. Toasters have a basket that closes and hugs the bread, parchment wrapped fish in this case, in place. So technically, it should work.
Mike's dish feels really simple and I think that's the glory of it, it's something I'd be happy tackling myself when cooking appliances are limited.
And much more appropriate to the challenge than raw toaster-warmed salmon. Jamie's also would have been an acceptable first.
Agreed on Mike's dish, it also deserved bonus points for not potentially setting your studio flat kitchen on fire
I would love to see Kush take part in a pass it on video.
This has got to happen! 😅
@@SortedFood 100 percent would. Be great. But make kuah last. (Insert evil laugh here)
That would be amazing 😊
@@SortedFood Kush was great as the rescue Christmas elf for the live show.
That would be a hella cruel thing to do to a chef.
I can't believe Barry won by ruining a toaster😂Might have been able to get the barbecue effect he wanted with that microwave burger gadget. Mikes definitely seemed the most achievable both in terms of technique and BUDGET for the widest variety of people, and I really enjoyed Jamie making use of a type of dish to cook in we don't usually see. I do wonder if he could have achieved the same effect in a regular ceramic bowl though, since it wasn't going onto a fire.
Barry and Jamie's dishes look like the one that you make in your small apartment/dorm to impress someone your dating. And Mike's looks like something you make for yourself or someone you have been dating for awhile. When you just want something filling, tastes good and doesn't take forever.
Also the safest route to go when not in your own place or using your own appliances. Easy to procure ingredients or similar ingredients no matter where you are, to come up with a substantial and tasty dish.
Barry's dish looks like the kind you'd make if you were fine with setting the dorm on fire.
Honestly, I think Jamie's would be my winner from a cooking standpoint. Barry's was a fire hazard. I'm sure his flavors were great but it just seems toooo dangerous to do what he did (the cooking in the toaster not the salmon, the salmon was fine given it's quality). But maybe I'm overthinking it, haha.
Mike's is great! I love me a good pie/soup filling with potatoes, it's just very comforting and cozy. Definitely no losers here!
Agree, Barry's was only edible (safe) as he got sashimi grade salmon, not something you are likey to pay for unless you are not going to cook it.
You could soak the skewers so they don't catch on fire?
Totally agree. Jamie should have won!
Also there is like, no way you could clean that toaster afterwards.
Fact is, Barry's dish didnt need to be cooked. He could have served the Salmon raw (like in a Poke Bowl) which completely defeats the point of the challenge.
That toaster did nothing to deserve this abuse #justiceforthetoaster
The look on Kush's face throughout, absolutely priceless.
Of the three, Jamie absolutely knocked it out of the park visually, and would probably be my winner for the brief of "You made this with THOSE?".
Mike's definitely looks doable by anyone, which when you're limited in equipment, is what you want, so his would be the winner in "Most Likely to be Edible if made by a novice".
Barry was... unique. Without being able to taste it, I cant rate it as highly as Ebbers, and frankly I fear for the state of peoples' kitchen equipment. Definitely do not attempt in an AirBnB.
I gotta say I'm really liking the fact that you guys are actually telling us straight out who came up with idea and also giving us the chance to see what they guys would come up with on their own, without any help from the food team. It's really fun and it makes everything feel a bit more natural and authentic IMO. Knowing that the normals worked with team of amazing chefs and foodies to come with their recipes on in these competitions always felt kind of like cheating or a cop-out. I think the guys are at the point where it's time to take of the training wheels (at least sometimes), and show us exactly what they're capable of.
But I think be able to see exactly what they alone come up with gives a better idea of what an actual normal would do in that situation, which also gives the us the opportunity to find out where we go wrong and how exactly to improve or correct those mistakes. Plus, in general it's just WAY more entertaining this way I think!
I’m thinking if you’re in an Airbnb they may not appreciate you using their toaster in that manner 🤣
Yeah, they probably wouldn’t agree with that 😂
I can just see one of us using a toaster at an AirBnB and it smells fishy and we thing... yeah.. they were cooking salmon like Barry!
Jamie's was the most ambitious in my mind but they all looked and seemed great
Producing a meal that balanced and edible given the microwave, kettle, and toaster made it the most impressive dish. Mike's veg was difficult to mess up and Barry's salmon didn't need to be fully cooked.
@@TheSongwritingCat Agreed, Jamie's dish impressed me the most because the balance is hard to do when a Microwave is involved, they tend to deepen certain flavours while cooking in a completely different way to the stove top. Mike did the smart thing with something that was guaranteed to work, he could have even done the mash in the microwave with fresh spuds if he wanted (they only take about 10 mins in there to cook).
You boys smashed it outta the park. Maybe change from a toaster to a toaster oven (they can be as small as a 4 slice toaster) which is much more versatile (and safer). Well done!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the vid 😁
Hard agree on this! Or at least banning anything other than bread from going in OR on the normal toaster. The TikTok “toaster steak” trend is already causing house fires.
@@SortedFood see when I saw the question on Facebook that is what I thought of. Haven't used a pop up toaster in decades. Had a small two slice toaster oven that could be really versatile in a pinch. Had both toasting & baking settings.
Agreed, pop up toaster is worse than a rice cooker they hate so much even when it comes to versatility lmao
@@argonautilus9540 yes causing fires and eventually food poisoning.... Cooking a steak or any kind of meat in a toaster is unhygienic as the meat juices will get to parts of the toaster that cannot be cleaned and thus certain growths will start ....
Congrats for the 3 amazing dishes you came up with. It really looked appetizing. The intro was really unfair, made me doubt a little the success, but all three normals solved it beautifully.
Hmm, if I remember correctly didn't you once have toaster bags. That might have been more sanitary solution with the salmon. 🤷♀️
In my book all three dishes where winners.
Kushkush 🤣 - I missed the dad jokes.
Yep, we really need to try this with those toaster bags for sure.
@@SortedFood I wonder if it would have worked well as a barbeque if you had just laid a sheet of aluminum foil over the toaster.
@Sorted Food and the microwave burger plates
@@chrisjioras6262 which has a higher burn point when very close to heat source..aluminum foil, parchment paper or roasting bag?
@@pookhahare Not sure about the roasting bag, but I would assume it's around the same point as aluminum foil since you can use both in hot ovens. Not at all sure about parchment paper. Seems like it wouldn't do well with that direct heat source, but I could be wrong about that.
Some people reinvent the wheel, Mike reinvented the beep. This deserves a standing ovation 👏🏽
You could easily put those skewers in a toaster bag and get the same affect without ruining your toaster. That's a great recipe idea!
You should do this again but have a judge who doesn't know how each item was prepared ie they aren't aware that no stove grill or oven was used I think that would be interesting
Great idea.
I really wonder how Barry's dish would turn out if he used that really expensive steam toaster. I'd love to see that happen since they loved it so much.
If you watch Korean or Japanese homemaking videos those toasters are the only oven and toaster they have and they used them very often. I've never seen anyone use a western oven.
@@StephBer1 can you recommend some channels?
Ok we need more of this and not *only* because it's so satisfying to watch genuine chaos... but also because, while it's fun to see how the Normals team can pull off instructions from the Food Team, those of us at home don't have the support of a fleet of creatives! So THIS kind of content and the very... "normal"... ideas the boys come up with... is the most relatable and familiar kind of thing we're ever going to see :) Keep it up!
For me, Jamie's would likely have been the standout winner. Barry's dish looked tasty... but by their own admission, it was undercooked - and he made an actual fire hazard while making it, plus may very well have damaged or even ruined the toaster. I've never had a pie like Mike's, so can't really evaluate it, but it does look tasty.
Yeah. Ben having just suffered some major head injury is the only explanation for his decision....
The cutaways to Kush in various stages of despair are becoming some of my favorite moments 😂
I'm autistic and for some reason my executive dysfunction gives me a mental block around the oven, so much so that I would rather make an omelet on the hob (although this does have to be a good day, energy-wise. Usually it's the appliances you use here) than shove a ready meal in the oven, so this is super helpful. I would love to not be limited to whatever microwave meals we have in the freezer.
You guys really never run out of briefs for battles huh? You're the best!
Thank you!
HEY! PLEASE BRING BACK BLOOPERS! Love that last 10-30 seconds of your videos.
I liked that Mike's was so affordable and something most people could achieve at school or in a small flat. All of them had great ideas! I sure wish we could taste through the screen! LOL
Im SO happy you added a little introductory segment to this one! I've been missing those, the last videos started to fast, it was confusing
The battle of the year! Kettle, Toaster and Microwave Wow!
It has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? 😂
Sounds like a game... marry, date...
Yall have had me in tears these last few videos. Heres another beep "#$%^&" 🤣
Let’s see if we can make it a hat-trick 😂
I would love to see an episode where you show how to cook using limited ingredients without the help of everything you’d find in a store cupboard - for example I recently stayed in an Airbnb and had to cook meals with only the ingredients I bought from a supermarket and didn’t want to spend on all the essentials if I wasn’t going to take them home (oil, pepper, salt, spices, sugar, flour etc!)
i heavily disagree with the result here, while barry's might have tasted good within the scope of the challenge mike's is the most achievable. i feel like considering the whole point of this is to see what you can cook with limited tools sashimi-grade salmon feels like cheating?
Yeah I agree Barry made a dish that would be edible raw.
Wait wait wait. So in a challenge where the premise is "what can you COOK with only a toaster, kettle and microwave", the winner is given to the dish which is normally mostly served raw (Sashimi), which barely saw a kiss in the toaster, left to marinate in a warm sauce, and some half burnt half non-warmed tortilla wraps. I'm sorry, did I miss the COOKING element here? Barry's previously won with a basic pasta dish (which in a video months before he said he makes regularly) in a challenge that called for creativity and now this one with something that actually doesn't require any cooking to taste good? At this point, the next challenge will be creating and cooking the most inventive vegan dish, which Barry will win by slapping all of Ben's allotment veg on a plate raw (and probably unwashed), because "it's just so fresh and there's nowhere to hide". Mike made a great dish which is actually really practical to make under the premise of "not having a hob to cook on", which I reckon should actually be tried. Sure, Jamie just reheated the couscous as per packet instruction, but at least what was served with the meat and toasted bread could be considered as substantial meal. Barry's came across as a snack which, really, didn't require much of anything. Granted, I can't taste any of the food, but give me Mike or Jamie's dish every day of the week, and if I were to choose a winner; probably Mike, because it's a hearty meal with some good hacks and, you know, actually cooked.
Agree. The only reason the dish was safe to eat was because he used expensive sashimi grade salmon. Barry's - impractical not really hitting the brief, the other 2; practical meals to make with limited equipment.
You two have too much time on your hands…
@@h.o.y.o maybe but it seems way less impressive to serve dish that is mostly the same raw compared to something that has to be cooked with limited equipment. If that wasn't sashimi salmon barry just made food poisoning on a skewer.
@@h.o.y.o Yeah, maybe I should learn crochet, enough free time for that. But if you disagree with my comment you're more than welcome to, if you think Barry won I'd like to know your reason why. ^_^
Would I be right in thinking that Barry's method would be improved by using those "parchment pocket" things that you are supposed to use for doing toasted cheese sandwiches in a toaster? That would save the toaster from driblets of whatever and keep those delicious-looking skewer things from falling apart.
You’re totally right! 👊
Great thinking
Ben's facial expressions while watching these 3 cook is pretty much exactly what I needed to de-stress my day.
'Kush Reacts' could be its own series!
Will Ebbers do a version of this task too?
I love when we get to see Kush in videos. Especially when the boys are making him weep 😂 Would love to see more of Kush!
It’s the concerned and defeated “this is chaos” for me 😂
Ben, I relate to that, and the giving up in 2022 on an almost spiritual level, both in cooking and life at the moment (it’s 2:30am on my anniversary and I’ve just blanched bones to make Tonkotsu which means I need to have it on in 6 hours. RIP me haha).
Love your work boys (and girls behind the scenes) ❤😂
I love this! Last year I lived and worked in South Africa for 5 weeks and all I had in my hotel room to cook with was an electric kettle and a microwave. This really takes me back to that time.
Barry winning after sticking Salmon in a toaster is so funny
It’s just too good 😂
For me, it was the tajin dish. he got a meal that would feed several people out of those three appliances in half an hour and that impressed me the most.
The salmon tacos get second only because he put the fish in the toaster to get color
The pie is definitely a bowl of comfort and I would personally love to try a variant of that to make a shepherd's pie instead.
Excellent video, the resourcefulness here was equally impressive and amusing!
Maybe one of the normals best performances yet. And I'm really impressed that they did these with no help from the food team.
I just love that 2 of the 3 recipes came with a “do not try this at home” warning, lol.
As long as the ceramic doesn't have any cracks/chips in the glaze, it's microwave proof, yeah. Jamie's correct.
"Toaster" and "salmon" are two words I never thought I'd hear so closely associated.
Same.
Barry said 'I can do this' at the beginning of this video, and his dish was the winner. It was a very enjoyable presentation on all of the dishes, and I hope to see more delicious dishes in the future.
Ben: (referring to the ‘Tagine’) “Yours is just meat.”
Jamie: “Yes.”
TO THE SPAFF: Never change 😂
Jamie made the meat for Barry's tacos
Three very different and amazing dishes that, basically sum up their cooking styles perfectly. Out of the box, bold in flavour, and comforting.
This look liked tasty cook 3 dishes with only one applience.
Reminds me of cooking in my college days, with nothing but an electric skillet, and an electric percolator coffee pot.
Didn't even have a toaster, and it was long enough ago that microwaves were still too expensive for college dorm rooms.
I still managed to make some really great meals, and fellow students would even buy me food as long as I would cook theirs for them, too.
Lots of quick rice, and pastas, and cheap meats fried up.
Fun times, and all these dishes looked and sounded great.
Even if toaster salmon sounds very sketchy!
I have never had ceramics explode in the microwave. But there are metallic paints used sometimes or metallic residue in ceramics itself. It mostly leads to your vessel getting hotter than your food in my experience… (mostly have the experience with heating up mulled wine around Christmas)
Some ceramic are porous, so if you happen to wet it before heating it can definitely cause a "breakage" of some kind ;)
I love how this is up there with one of the most impressive meals they have done on the fly
I had this phase where I would videos of Japanese, Korean and other East Asian Supermarkets where all you do is walk in, get a big pot of instant noodles, add in the condiments, put it in a special microwave and then you eat in the supermarket.
Glad to see you guys doing this again! Would also love to see you guys try some of the other gadgets you've tested over the last couple of years to test out the practicality of the devices.
Also, you guys are adorable as always--thank you for all you do and for being yourselves while you do it!
I wish I had Barry’s luck to not end up doing the dish he wanted yet still won
Kush's head in his hands, either laughing or crying, in the preview says so much! 🤣
New challenge: cook in a way to make Kush cry xD
Sounds like a great challenge to us 😂😉
I'd love to see them do this exact challenge again, with their same recipes, this time knowing what did and didn't work, and adjusting to suit. rather than moving on to entirely new recipes? this might replicate how we cook things at home? gradually refining etc.
Can already tell this will be great
omg yesss! the 3 way battles are the best they are so chaotic and i've missed them so much more please
"It's so weird to cook in a toaster, and yet, it has worked." *IT DIDN'T COOK!* We can see that from here! Jamie was robbed. He made a whole meal, used the tools, and it was delicious by all accounts. Ever Baz admitted his want cooked. Bad Ebbers. Bad. Imma get my rolled up newspaper. 😆
I think every challenge should be a blind judging 🤷♀️
I love that you tell us when the recipes are from the food team or not. I think the boys did a great job.. I would never attempt to cook anything in a toaster, so very creative Barry! Jamie’s looked really good and Mike’s looked so good (minus the mushrooms).. like Ben said, a bowl of comfort. I’d love to see the food team/Ben do this!!

Found you guys when Callux came on the show and the youtube algo pushed it to me. I have binge watched SO MANY EPISODES and i love everything about you and the sorted team. Hella praise to the "normals" for being far better than normal IMO. And also the chefs for actually having deep understanding and incredible skill. (use to be a chef and everything ebbers does just .... chefs kiss). Also would have chosen Barry's this time ngl haha. I'm assuming there is an editor for the channel too... if you see this then your smashing it!
The look of panic on their faces!! :D
Jamie was my winner. I like the idea of “cooking” the couscous in the Tupperware. If I’m making food and I’m not at home, I want the least amount of items to clean up with the best flavors I can get.
This went so well the first time…
Those looked fantastic! Really creative use of the equipment! Would def do as others have suggested re toaster bags for the salmon though. Was genuinely worried Barry was about to start a fire.
This is what most PG/hostels allow that is a kettle would love this become a series
This was so great, I'm glad the boys rose to the challenge with this! The creativity they brought to the brief shows how far they've come as cooks, and honestly it's so heartbreaking to hear them put themselves down -- I'm sure it's a fair amount of British self-deprecation, but I can't imagine them succeeding in quite these ways even two years ago. I'd love to see you guys tackle more vegetarian recipes, especially because meat often seems like such a "crutch" for dishes.
I do believe Kush will be taking over James's position this year. They are easing him in into camera appearances
I've barely started watching and I know this will be good. Any episode with Kush trying to poke his eyes out in the opening sequence just has to be terrific.
It's bold of Jamie to presume that if your place do not have hob and oven, it will have tajine dish xD
There should be a challenge to do that with basic equipment only
I would say Jamie is the winner because his dish was out of the box and delicious while still being something he could make without setting anything on fire or potentially ruining a toaster 😂
I forgot today is Wednesday! Oh yay this was a nice surprise haha
Happy Wednesday!
I agree with Ben. Barry's the winner with his unusual cooking method but it turned surprisingly beautiful and delicious!
Jamie and Mike also did well.
As a Moroccan, I finally understand the pain my Spanish neighbours went through when Jamie made paella.
i'd like to see more videos like this with limited equipment, it reminds me of when i first got my own place. perhaps an outdoors style one with nothing but a campfire, or limiting the use of things like pots pans and baking trays.
Kush looks stressed and traumatized
He always is 😂
I love this kind of battle with all three normals going at it together. And the equipment challenge made it even better. And how out of all the fun chaos really good dishes emerged.
4:35 Every day is a fun day for Kush because he gets front row seats to unadulterated chaos.
The couscous made Kush-blush 😂
Favorite part of the video is Ebbers giggling as Jamie is walking by & his shoulders raise with such a cute smile/giggle. 😊💜😊
If someone doesn't make kettle ramen ill be upset
This just takes me back to the live show all over again! (I was lucky enough to travel to go see them). Honestly loving the more Kush content! Keep up the good work!
How often are the normals allowed to cook without any input from the food team, with the exception of Pass It On? We all know how well that usually goes! I’m predicting carnage and I’m here for it!! 😂
I think they usually get the food team to help with the theory and help them plan it, but once the camera is on its all up to them
@@ninjab33z I know that’s how it normally is but sounds like today they had no input from them and I wondered if they have done this before minus pass it on?
I really rate Jamie's cooking approach of just can i pickle it or can it slaw it 🤣
Barry definitely should have lost since he ruined the toaster in the process. Breaking the appliance should have disqualified him.
He didn’t break it though… it was totally fine after the salmon believe it or not 😂
@Sorted Food OK, it's forgiven. I still think it's a destructive action, which will break something if done on a regular basis, though.
So ive been watching for about a year now, and upon doing so its made me more resourceful now more than ever really struggling financially so all these recipe relays etc have been helping me to explore ingredients that id never think to use on a very limited budget genuinely so thankful as im so stubborn and fussy id probably starve before buying things i dont like
For me, Jamie’s meal is the clear winner as a meal, but Barry embraced the spirit of the challenge better.
And I love the reactions from Kush.
the surprise on EVERYONE'S face when Barry won 😂😂😂 even Ebbers was surprised and he was the judge
