I'm not sure how well Mike's squash and seeds would do in many other toasters. I feel like there's a non-zero chance of ruining an appliance by trying that. Of the three, Jamie's is the one I'd want to eat.
Jaime's seemed the most chef-y. He even had to explain how to make real hollandaise. 😉 That said, I now want to try toasting squash. I really want to know how it came out texturally.
Uh... Guys? There's several news articles about people messing up on poaching eggs in the microwave and suffering extended-hospital-stay, mutilated-face burns. Even if you pierce the yolk, it can explode. How to Cook That did one of her hack safety videos on it and exploded a few dozen eggs to demonstrate. Her cup of boiling water with pierced egg exploded after 55 seconds. I cooked many a microwave egg in my uni days (and scraped most of them onto my plate from the microwave's innards) but I had also been raised by someone who passed on the 80s microwave safety lesson 'leave all microwaved foods in there for at least one minute after it beeps'. My little 700 W microwave-that-could managed eggs in about 45 seconds. About, because it was cheap and didn't have the safety feature of a digital display to tell me how long it had been in. And there is no 'standard' microwave wattage. Most range from 600-1200W and heat more efficiently depending on how they're built. I can cook a microwave cake in my 900 W oven in the same time as my mom can in her 1200 W one, both using full power. Neither have a rotating glass tray. Both cook that cake recipe way more evenly than the 650 W rotating microwave I had between my uni microwave and my current one.
Its very interesting to see people using basic appliances to cook food in unexpected ways that DOES NOT then destroy or contaminate it for future usage. Nicely done boys!
The idea of toasting seeds in the crumb tray of a toaster is mind blowing. I will have to try that sometime. Al 3 recipes were good ideas. I don't like seafood so I wont try the salmon, but the poached egg + hollandaise still looks good. I'd love more of these videos of making delicious meals with minimal/college appliances
I think Jamie gets this one purely for his creative use of residual heat. It feels to me like he was the most on-brand with the prompt while also making something that you would never expect to see out of a "basic appliance battle."
A word of advice for anyone trying to replicate these recipes at home: DO NOT POACH EGGS IN THE MICROWAVE! Jamie managed to do it safely here, but he mentioned that eggs tend to explode in the microwave. If you take them out of the microwave just before they explode, that boiling water will go everywhere and could leave you with serious burns.
I was just going to comment this, too. See the "How to Cook That" video "Debunking Exploding Egg Hacks & blowtorching chocolate." Even puncturing the yolk doesn't make it safe.
I feel like they should have pointed out the clingfilm for safety. Doing it in a covered cup/bowl and leaving that covered for a bit after removing it from the microwave does make it safer, but it's really not advisable to poach eggs in the microwave, yes.
7:22 Remember kids, oil floats on water, which means once your butter has fully melted, you've got a pocket of water sitting under butterfat just waiting to cause a steam explosion.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone cook anything in the crumb tray of a toaster.” Same… and now we all have. Guess there’s a first time for everything. 😉
@@SortedFood also… I loved this battle. It’s amazing to watch and I can only imagine how helpful it could be to people who don’t have access to a stove. These types of hacks would’ve saved my from a lot of ready meals in uni. 😉
When strawberries, pineapple etc are in season I buy in bulk chop them finely add sugar, vanilla a hint of freshly ground black pepper and put in heavy bottomed saucepan. I let it heat up and become a sticky puree. Then put it in ziplock bags and freeze them. I have strawberry/pineapple sauce to top my dessert throughout the year.
8:18 I never knew this part about the microwave because I usually heat up my food in the center thinking it’ll be evenly heated up, but never thought about how more hot it can become from the edges. Thank you Sorted Food for teaching me something new! 🤩🤩
Is it possible that we can have a little warning text on screen when you're microwaving just eggs, or eggs in water? Eggs can explode both when you're microwaving them, and after when you take them out. There's been a number of terrible accidents throughout the years regarding people microwaving eggs and getting severe burn wounds. So just something like "Please be careful when microwaving eggs - They can explode and cause injury if you're not careful!" would be very nice to see. Alright, cheers!
I want to eat Jamie's, so Jamie's gets my vote. Jamie makes the kind of food I wanna eat usually, because he makes filling, full meal types of things. I can't tell if Barry using only one of the 3 pieces of equipment is more or less creative. Like, on one hand, you gave them 3 weird things to cook with and he didn't use 2 of them, so they're underutilized. On the other, like, he only needed the microwave, which is impressive.
It might be worth noting that generally microwaving raw eggs in any form is a bad idea, as they are prone to explode and can cause serious burns! Ann from How To Cook That did a great video on it.
I would like to see an episode with air fryer. I'm moving to a small apartment and while I would love an oven, I do think the most suitable would be an air fryer, budget and space-wise. Would like some ideas from you guys.
If you have place/plan on having a microwave, there are probably microwave-oven combinations. I have one of them and its great. Clearly, not the biggest oven, but still big enough and just taking the place of one machine.
Air fryers are brilliant. I had a 23lt I cooked a roast in it using the rotisserie attachment, made scones, it made the best grilled cheese toast but it had a manufacturing issue so I sent it back for a refund. I miss its size. I am now down to a 4.1lt Air fryer. I can only do 1 grilled cheese at a time. A toaster oven might be just as good for you. Good luck with which ever you choose
Aluminum foil at the bottom of one makes easy clean up if youre feeling lazy. Does effect charing and needs more flipping but I dont even bother some days lol

DON’T POACH AN EGG IN THE MICROWAVE EVEN IF YOU POKE THE YOLK. It doesn’t always work. You can can get severely injured. For more info go watch Ann Reardon’s video where she poached eggs, poked eggs, and just whites in the microwave.
This is the second dessert dish I have seen Barry make that looks and sounds incredible-good for you. The squash dish was so uniquely done, and the final product was delicious looking.
Barry’s dish was my winner! Loved the cream and jam hack. All three were really good, though. I thought Mike deserved special props for doing everything without bowls too!
Poor Jamie. His meal gets my vote! I wouldn’t feel comfortable toasting squash in my toaster and my crumb tray wouldn’t work the way that one did. Not a huge fan of Eaton Mess so JAMIE FOR THE WIN 🏆
I don't know why, but on every battle between normals, I always prefer the dishes brought out by Jamie. he puts out really good looking and full meal whilst other puts out marginally different dish such as veganish or dessert. Maybe I just prefer a filling dish instead of a sort of appetizer.
As a person, Jamie feels the most "normal" to me. So as a result, his dishes seem to be the things a "normal" would think of at eat. Where as Barry feels more manic-posh and Mike feels classy
Jamie's dish looked yummy but the normal cook at home not safe using microwave for the eggs they do tend to explode despite the water in cup being peel your skin off hot
Jamie, your dish was amazing to watch come together! It looked absolutely delicious. And your plating skills were top notch! GREAT JOB!!!!! Definitely a #1 dish for me.
I've actually had to do this! Just the before the pandemic I inherited a house that needed major renovations, the plan was to do that, move in and sell my old house. The clearance work on the house started mid-march 2020 but the lockdowns blew my plans (and finances) out of the water and had to sell the existing house to finance the works at the other - I went 9 months without a working kitchen, living on what was effectively a building site. It was pretty grim, getting up and walking down to where the kitchen would be and just heating up things in the microwave and slopping them on toast etc. My saviour was around 3 months in when I just got sick to death of it and bought an electric grill oven (Ninja) - suddenly I was able to actually cook meats and vegetables again!
My friend's husband did their kitchen renovation himself which took over a year. It as never quite completed because he was distracted by other renovations he kept starting and left incomplete too. She fed four children with little money but a lot of creativity. A hot plate, a borrowed electric base for 3 qt Corningware, and a 4 qt electric multi-pot. Maybe her husband would have worked faster if she fed him only sandwiches.
Jamie's dish looked amazing but all three of them did really clever things I would have never imagined possible with 3 appliances. My life has possibly changed for the better
This was so fun. Would love to see more of this. Maybe up the difficulty like having 1 appliance or limiting foods they can use, or even saying what kind of dish they have to make.
I like this one. I mentioned in a comment a while back that I travel for work, and often have only a microwave in the hotel room, and have had to live off of one for 6 weeks before. I'd love to see them use a standard drip coffee maker in place of the kettle and other simple tools to make quality meals.
When I first saw this on IG I thought each normal would only get one appliance (like Barry would have the microwave, Mike would have the toaster). That would be a fun challenge if you're looking to up the ante!
Honestly, Mike went the most creative route. Microwave is actually super easy to use to make full-on meals while taking advantage of a toaster to do so seems rather innovative. Love that!
Honestly I think Jamie pulls out the win here. How he managed to pull that off with just 3 basic home appliances is impressive by itself. Mike had some great ideas with that toaster I was impressed by that I'd say he took 2nd place. I think Barry played it a little safe with only using the microwave while it looked really well I just think he played a little more safe than the others.
I can't be too disappointed with a Barry win, because I often think he gets robbed. And I know the normals always work with the food team and stuff, but something about them saying in the video that Barry's was basically just out of one of their previous recipe books makes it seem like a less worthy win.
Whatever about the win, he definitely shouldn't have gotten the badge. The only thing he got from the recipe was the meringue but that was also the only really creative use of the equipment
I agree, he did nothing "original" he just went with something that already existed as for Mike & Jamie they had to struggle more, that's why Barry was so relaxed, he knew his was pretty much guaranteed to work.
@@Discdyslexic Agree, Mike was super creative using the crumb tray and Jamie poaching that salmon & eggs. I don't know what Ben was thinking on this one.
@@marilynalvarez9951 I believe Ben was thinking that Jamie just shy of burnt his muffins ( so very over toasted), and Mike had an over abundance of raw garlic flavor that overpowered everything. Neither of them made the best version of the dish they set out to make. I'm not inclined to say Barry's was the best, but it didn't have anything wrong with it which made the judging fall the way it did.
Sorry but not really, this "recipe" was already done by the food team and is in one of their books so nothing original about it, that's why he was so calm. Jamie & Mike did do something original
I think Jamie and Mike's dishes where more creative and used the tools they where given instead of just focusing on one I would say I like Jamie's better but I love fish but Mike was very creative
Super impressive, I really didn't think that any of those 3 dishes would be possible. Any chance you could do this as a series, as this kinda stuff would be fantastic for my teenage boys, or all those off to Uni/moving into their own place? Thanks LOADS 👍🏻👍🏻
This is the kind of constraint that wouldn't make a lot of sense for most, but gives a wonderful kick of creativity and makes for good content. Most of your vids are good, this one is great. Can we have a part 2 (and 3), please?
I agree with Ben's ranking. Barry went to the basic of basics with the use of just one appliance and made a very clever use of it. And Mike showed a new use for the crumb tray. Good job guys!!
But Barry's dish/recipe was one the cook team had already done so it wasn't "original" it was just repeating an existing process as for Mike & Jamie DID do something original and out of their comfort zone, it was a real challenge, that's why Barry was pretty relaxed.
@@marilynalvarez9951 The brief was to prepare a recipe using the basic appliances in a set time and he did it, and also, he adapted and made the recipe and did it well. Jamie made salmon, poached egg and a hollandaise on toast, that's not "original"
I would have to agree with Ebbers. But well done all of you. I'm still giggling at the guys faces when Ebbers told Bazza his nuts are great. I use my rice cooker to not just cook rice but make risotto, soups and beef and bean chilli.
When paired with an electric kettle, I use mine to make fancy "instant" soups (lately rice noodles; add peas, greens, and dumplings) and pasta (lately cooking cauliflower with the noodles themselves, drain, return to pot with all the tasty things i want to finish it with). It occasionally boils over, but putting a plate under catches the majority of the messes.
@@LaurenPedersentrian Have you made cauliflower or broccoli soup? I cheat I buy them both frozen. Cook them in either veggie or chicken stock when soft blend it up, add salt and pepper to taste, add 1/2 cup of pouring cream stir through add a little nutmeg on top when you serve.

I'm not sure how well Mike's squash and seeds would do in many other toasters. I feel like there's a non-zero chance of ruining an appliance by trying that.
Of the three, Jamie's is the one I'd want to eat.
I think the smart thing was that he went with a non drippy food to put in the toaster. Otherwise the crumb tray would've turned into a drip tray.
Jaime's seemed the most chef-y. He even had to explain how to make real hollandaise. 😉
That said, I now want to try toasting squash. I really want to know how it came out texturally.
you can put the squash in parchment to avoid that. Is how I made grilled cheese sandwiches in college.
Uh...
So creative!! I enjoyed watching Jaime eggs Benedict come together with his cooking knowledge of the hollandaise sauce.
Its very interesting to see people using basic appliances to cook food in unexpected ways that DOES NOT then destroy or contaminate it for future usage. Nicely done boys!
for a second i was worried jamie intended to cook his salmon in the actual kettle
16:26 Barry looks so proud as he's being showered with praise from Ben
A word of advice for anyone trying to replicate these recipes at home: DO NOT POACH EGGS IN THE MICROWAVE! Jamie managed to do it safely here, but he mentioned that eggs tend to explode in the microwave. If you take them out of the microwave just before they explode, that boiling water will go everywhere and could leave you with serious burns.
I was just going to comment this, too. See the "How to Cook That" video "Debunking Exploding Egg Hacks & blowtorching chocolate." Even puncturing the yolk doesn't make it safe.
That's probably why you do it in stages of cooking, so you can prevent it from exploding
I feel like they should have pointed out the clingfilm for safety. Doing it in a covered cup/bowl and leaving that covered for a bit after removing it from the microwave does make it safer, but it's really not advisable to poach eggs in the microwave, yes.
Also Ann Reardon from How To Cook That has shown that piercing the yolk that Jamie talked about does nothing to prevent egg from exploding
@@nahum3557 I've seen that tried too. It's not a failsafe method, but it can help a little.
7:22 Remember kids, oil floats on water, which means once your butter has fully melted, you've got a pocket of water sitting under butterfat just waiting to cause a steam explosion.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone cook anything in the crumb tray of a toaster.”
Same… and now we all have. Guess there’s a first time for everything. 😉
Pretty good hack though huh? 🤯
@@SortedFood it definitely is! Would’ve never thought of it. Although… I think I need to clean my crumb tray before using this hack. 👀
@@SortedFood also… I loved this battle. It’s amazing to watch and I can only imagine how helpful it could be to people who don’t have access to a stove.
These types of hacks would’ve saved my from a lot of ready meals in uni. 😉
@@Anna_TravelsByRail Yeah that's a good idea haha!
@@Anna_TravelsByRail I'd need to sandblast mine.
Mike: (makes a Squash glazed with Miso)
Yuzu: (sits and cries in the corner)
This right here was thinking the exact same thing
Yesss! The pierced yolk and the checking every 30 secs will have helped reduce that risk a little hopefully
I would like to see an episode with air fryer. I'm moving to a small apartment and while I would love an oven, I do think the most suitable would be an air fryer, budget and space-wise. Would like some ideas from you guys.
Or a toaster oven…do they have those in the UK?
I have a ninja foodi air fryer/other kinds of air cookers/toaster oven/toaster. I love it.
Aluminum foil at the bottom of one makes easy clean up if youre feeling lazy. Does effect charing and needs more flipping but I dont even bother some days lol
Jamie's dish was the best hands-down. He did absolutely brilliant work, and also made something that I'd actually be excited to eat.
I binged so much sorted, that I had to take a break for a few months... Not out of boredom, but because I had run through all the content. I'm glad to see you guys again, thank you for being consistent and always entertaining. Ive missed you. Because you all exist, mythical kitchen is only my SECOND fave UA-cam cooking show ❤
I know the chances of the guys seeing this are low, but I just wanted to thank Sorted for being such a source of comfort for me. Discovered the channel about 2 years ago when in a depressive slump and have since been extremely excited whenever a new video comes out because the content just makes me happy and keeps my mind off the sad things. Keep doing what you do and love you guys and the whole crew!
You said it very well. I totally agree.
Thank you so much for watching - stay strong, you've got this! 💪❤
Baz looks especially adorable in this ep. as he’s shaking his jam jar with his floppy hair 🥺💕
Once again, the boys have come through with a proper 3 course meal! Toasted squash salad appetizer, eggs royale main, and fruity "merengue" dessert? Amazing brunch menu!
I absolutely loved this episode. The poached salmon and the crumb tray nuts were awesome but Barry's eton mess was a standout. brilliant work.
Oh… fantastic, except no one will ever use that kettle again if Jamie’s poached fish in it! Lmao!
“Pears out, nuts in”.
Don’t think we didn’t notice Ben….
I've never identified more with Barry than when he said he does everything he can to avoid peeling, I'm exactly the same, hate peeling stuff.
Poor Jamie. His meal gets my vote! I wouldn’t feel comfortable toasting squash in my toaster and my crumb tray wouldn’t work the way that one did. Not a huge fan of Eaton Mess so JAMIE FOR THE WIN 🏆
i wouldnt try to poach an egg in the microwave, hell no im not gonna play with my life.
Spent the whole thing wondering why Jamie was banging on about marinating in the marinade. Cue blooper. 🤣
I don't know why, but on every battle between normals, I always prefer the dishes brought out by Jamie. he puts out really good looking and full meal whilst other puts out marginally different dish such as veganish or dessert. Maybe I just prefer a filling dish instead of a sort of appetizer.
Yeah, Jamie's dishes are usually my favourite too.
I have no problem with veganish, but I agree. Doesn't feel like a main. But, I'm also down for an impressive side etc so 🤷🏻♀️
As a person, Jamie feels the most "normal" to me. So as a result, his dishes seem to be the things a "normal" would think of at eat. Where as Barry feels more manic-posh and Mike feels classy
@@DrigrX "manic-posh"
💯💯💯, great phrasing
"I didn't realise these were from your allotment, this brings a whole meaning to the dish" lmao barry
Please do more of these! This is so helpful as I basically live in a hotel when I'm working and I want to stop eating out all the time.
Jamie's dish looked amazing but all three of them did really clever things I would have never imagined possible with 3 appliances. My life has possibly changed for the better
2:44 Ben astoundingly maintained his composure given how wackadoodle yet creative it is to cook something in a crumb tray. My mind is blown.
Good for Barry! Woohoo!!!
But I have to say, having stayed in many holiday flats, Mike's use of the toaster was incredibly practical.
This was so fun. Would love to see more of this. Maybe up the difficulty like having 1 appliance or limiting foods they can use, or even saying what kind of dish they have to make.
All three dishes look amazing! Yes, even Mike's, despite him saying it doesn't look great. I'd definitely eat any of these dishes.
''Flakey as fish'' made me proper laugh out loud. Oh Ben, you tickle many fancies!
been on UA-cam for the past 10 minutes just so I won't miss this battle!!
I like this one. I mentioned in a comment a while back that I travel for work, and often have only a microwave in the hotel room, and have had to live off of one for 6 weeks before. I'd love to see them use a standard drip coffee maker in place of the kettle and other simple tools to make quality meals.
I love SORTED so much. You never fail to cheer me up :)
All three lads used a lot of intuition and smarts with these . I love it! Mike's dish I was thinking the whole time "like how?" and he did that!
Mike's dish was amazing. Some really cool ideas.
When I first saw this on IG I thought each normal would only get one appliance (like Barry would have the microwave, Mike would have the toaster). That would be a fun challenge if you're looking to up the ante!
All of the dishes look soooo good, especially the Eggs Benedict.
I'm sure at least one of the Normals (namely Mike) was distraught over "Waffle-Iron" not being an option.
Probably!
🤣🤣🤣
It's amazing. I cant remeber the last time all 3 normal made it before the timer went off
Ummmm a squash in the toaster? Doesn’t it have a lot of water content to affect the toaster?
Honestly, Mike went the most creative route. Microwave is actually super easy to use to make full-on meals while taking advantage of a toaster to do so seems rather innovative. Love that!
I've made homemade bread with a bowl and a toaster oven, turned out great with a bit of foil.
Mike geting his intermediate basic badge is the best part of this video. It was literally genius using the crumb tray.
I love the jam jar whipped cream hack. I'm definitely trying it next time I run low.
The only one I would want to try was Jamie's. So he totally won in my book.
I'd try Jamie's and Barry's. The boys love seeds and I can't stand them. Sorry Mike
The production level is just outstanding. Great video guys!
@@marilynalvarez9951 He also only used the microwave which doesn't to me show competence with basic appliances, but simply with a microwave.
I really want to try that jam jar technique.
Barry that was fab and you were so calm. A deserved win IMHO!
Sorry but not really, this "recipe" was already done by the food team and is in one of their books so nothing original about it, that's why he was so calm. Jamie & Mike did do something original
100% Make another 👌 This was amazing, and loved all the small tips and hacks 😊 They all did amazing 👌
You should definitely give some warning regarding the poaching eggs in the microwave! That can go seriously wrong and give you severe burns!!
Barry’s floppy hair is magnificent!! 😂
The use of the crumb tray was innovative, but the Eton mess definitely looked the best!
I think Jamie and Mike's dishes where more creative and used the tools they where given instead of just focusing on one I would say I like Jamie's better but I love fish but Mike was very creative
How was Barry's not creative?
@@Steven-jo8ug they even mentioned that the main part of his (meringues) were from cba2 so he didn't think of that himself
Super impressive, I really didn't think that any of those 3 dishes would be possible.
Any chance you could do this as a series, as this kinda stuff would be fantastic for my teenage boys, or all those off to Uni/moving into their own place? Thanks LOADS 👍🏻👍🏻
How about an ultimate battle where the only ingredients they can use must come from the allotment.
This is the kind of constraint that wouldn't make a lot of sense for most, but gives a wonderful kick of creativity and makes for good content. Most of your vids are good, this one is great. Can we have a part 2 (and 3), please?
This can also be called ultimate dorm appliances battle. Wonderful video. Made me remember all the "unique" ways we cooked in my friends dorm.
Excellent! Do you have any hacks to share? 😀
More equipment battles please! This was great
Always a good day when the Sorted guys upload 😊😊😊
Agreed, it's pretty obvious that they all did well.
Ben saying microwave the Nigella way. 😂😂😂
I loved this video, pls bring this format back!!!
4:12 I thought Jamie was going to start singing "Sandstorm" for a moment 😊
Cook them in either veggie or chicken stock when soft blend it up, add salt and pepper to taste, add 1/2 cup of pouring cream stir through add a little nutmeg on top when you serve.
the hack with the jam jar is brilliant!!!
