Taken seriously, Dimensions in Time is the bad. But viewing it as silly charity special, it's fine. I mean, it gave us Six and the Brig together, and seeing Pertwee in live action one last time was amazing. It's weird just how much older everybody looked. Some of them looked like they aged thirty years in only ten. Meanwhile Pertwee looked basically the same! Fun fact, there's a novel where the Doctor says he had a nightmare where the "Rani trapped him in East Enders," so canonically, this special exists as a bad dream.
If I had a nickel for every time a much-loved long running UK sci-fi TV series did an awkward and confusing crossover with EastEnders, I'd have two nickels.

Mike Reid as Frank Butcher breaking the fourth wall to say “Well, I’ve seen them drag them out of The Vic, but never drag them in before” was worth my TV license for that year
I’ve actually watched Dimensions In Time several times over…and yes, it IS every bit as bad as advertised. Oddly enough though, it’s that very fact that made it a curiosity for me in the first place and why I actually do rather enjoy it. It’s one of those “so extremely horribly bad that it makes its way all the way around to good” kind of things, sort of like watching a train wreck happen right in front of your eyes…horrifying, yet you can’t keep your eyes off it…😅 Last I checked, it was available for free on UA-cam and whilst I wouldn’t recommend it for the weak, for the extremely die-hard fan it can be seen as an interesting example of a moment where the show just really didn’t get it right on any account…a moment which can be looked back on, learned from and ultimately smiled upon since the desire for more Doctor Who wasn’t killed off completely by it…a fact which the 1996 TV movie, Big Finish and now both NuWho eras are a testament to. True, Dimensions In Time IS awful…but I had fun watching it just to see how extremely bad it was. We can be thankful that this wasn’t the last we would ever see of Doctor Who and even admire what good things it DID bring about in its wake as well…to this day, the Doctor Who Children In Need sketch is a much-beloved event, with both of David Tennant’s Doctors being introduced using such skits. Dimensions In Time was the very first time Doctor Who was included in the fundraiser, so just sit on that one for a bit…something which is now a cherished tradition starting off with a such a horrific flop, obviously someone learned something from that. And I will also state that the special does, at the very least, deliver some fun moments. One of my all-time favorite Fifth Doctor lines comes from it…”and the companions came in, two by two…” 😅 All in all, yeah…it’s a very bad special…however, it’s still managed to find itself a special place within Doctor Who’s history, even if that happens to be a place of infamy. I personally recommend watching it with extreme care yet backing that with watch it anyway…it is a fun, if rather poorly done, part of series history and an interesting example of how the flame somehow managed to be kept alive during the “wilderness years” of Doctor Who…😅😁
Actually, The Five Doctors was also part of Children in Need, and was delayed 2 days from the actual anniversary to be broadcast on the night of the appeal.

I did enjoy Jon Pertwee's appearance on Noel Edmonds' show, even if the costume looks terrible on him. The Doctor's gag about seeing Noel in the year 2015 is probably the best moment of the special. 😋 But it did allow the Sixth Doctor to at last meet the Brigadier, allowing the Brig to encounter ALL of the classic Doctors. And I have to admit there are some fun moments, even if none of them follow any logic (or sense) whatsoever. If they had extended the special a little, like maybe two half hour episodes rather than twenty minutes total, and had time for a couple of rewrites, it might have worked. In the end, it really didn't. It was clear that they just went with whomever agreed to appear and THEN wrote the script to incorporate them. That failed. I'm convinced that's also how The Five Doctors was written, but at least Terrence Dicks knew how to write a Doctor Who episode. Brigadier: "Splended fellow. All of them." Aide: "Them, sir?"
Somehow you've managed to make it sound better than it was! Needless to say, it wasn't meant to be taken seriously (which is the root of the problem). I wouldn't say it's as bad as the Star Wars Holiday Special, as this is only 13 minutes and actually keeps things moving, if just in a completely senseless way -- The Star Wars Holiday Special was almost 100 minutes of nothing happening. -- Having said that, however, I'd kill to hear commentaries or interviews of people who worked behind the scenes of both, as both are amazing train-wrecks, and the stories of how they got made, likely by aspiring Film/Video graduates who were disillusioned by the world of entertainment (at least slightly) simply by working in it. If anything, I'd compare this to the awfulness of something like We Wish You A Turtle Christmas.
You end this with a warning - but I've seen about 3 different Who fans doing a reaction to this one now, and it's been a good time! I don't think it's something I'd choose to watch, but you doing a bit where blood comes out of your ears because of the remixed 90s dance style theme makes it all fun.

There must be something wrong!"
Hey, in 1993 we had The Paradise of Death on the radio and Thirty Years in the TARDIS - AND a Radio 2 documentary presented by Nicholas Courtney. AND The Power of the Daleks was released on audio tape. And the novelisations of Evil and Power came out. AND loads of old TV repeats, including Planet of the Daleks in the run-up to Christmas (with six specially-filmed shorts to go with them). It really wasn't that bad. Yes, Dimensions in Time was atrocious... but as anniversary years go, 30 was arguably better than 40...
The story of DARK DIMENSION's cancellation is even worse than you might think, since it was never actually officially commissioned...and nobody knew who would actually produce it. That being said, there's an animated version here on UA-cam, and it's...slightly better. I look forward to your video on it!
Also glad the BEEB were continuing the tradition of throwing out priceless Doctor Who props and memorabilia even a good two decades after they stopped erasing/trashing every existing copy of the black and white era episodes, that, likewise, needed to literally be picked up from junkyards and saved by fans. Some things never change.

i was thinking... can anything be worse than the absorbalov episode. then you said it was part of noel's house party. and i realised it would be likely to be worse than anything i can imagine.
When I read “Worst Ever Doctor Who episode” I immediately thought of “Dimensions in Time”. It could have been interesting with all the Doctors and companions, but it was too ambitious for the budget and length of the special and ended up feeling like a bunch of randomness. I’d still say this is better than the Star Wars Christmas Special, by far. This is at least pretty short and doesn’t drag on forever.
This script was written by a lunatic, a barely literate lunatic, over the course of 30 minutes. That's the only explanation for the steaming pile of crap we were given as a "celebration" of 30 years. It was by FAR the worst thing ever put out under the Doctor Who name. The Timeless Children was a masterpiece of story telling, a compelling thrill ride by comparison. That's how terrible it was. I remember watching it on TV, I was gutted.
This is click bait (and a terrible video). I thought you were discussing the NEW Dr. Who show, the 60th anniversary show. You know, the show with the "message" and a trans Rose.
You guys waste so much energy on complaining about "wokeness" that you miss the real problems with episodes like the star beast. It's so frustrating because I don't really want to voice my opinion about the latest episode because I might get thrown in the same pot as you people. People might think I'm weird and have a feud with every single trans person in existence. Like, get a life, go outside, enjoy yourself.
Good review of Dimensions in Time! Thank goodness this was not broadcasted in the states! The story does not make any sense and when did the story get so complicated? It is so complicated like Thomas and the Magic Railroad. I would have gone with the original 30th Anniversary special Lost in the Dark Dimension and someone adapted into an animation on UA-cam.
LOL HS2 is good value compared to motorways of the same length - and is mostly money on building stations, which no other countries include in the calculation of cost per mile
I remember watching this, and being so disappointed :p Made all the weirder years later when Eastenders showed up as a tv show within the world of Doctor Who :p Not to mention Leela and Mel turning up in Albert Square themselves :p
“Worst piece of Doctor Who media ever” Idk, at least it’s only 15 minutes with both parts combined. ‘Torchwood: Miracle Day’ is a 10 hour top to bottom disaster 🤮
The 3D effect worked by having a dark lens on one eye which made the brain see that image later. Which means things moving the right appeared to be in front of things moving to the left. Which explains the camera constantly moving to the left and the constant spinning. It did work quite well though.
It's such a shame that this was my first glimpse of Doctor Who too! I was 8 and excitedly waited with my 3D specs for it! this was before we got Sky and UK gold reruns! 😂
This is so cringe. OMG, it's like JNT taking something I love and doing everything he could to make sure it would never come back to TV. I have never been able to sit through this whole story, even watching a review of it now is hard for me not to click away from. I live and breathe Doctor WHO, I've seen all the worst it could be before... Nightmare of Eden or The Web Planet, comes to mind... but yeah, nothing compares to just how bad this was. Why couldn't THIS be in the lost episodes? Ughh...

All the other Doctors gave their technobabble lines to Sylvester McCoy because they couldn't be bothered to learn them, and McCoy was drunk while filming the final scene
Tom Baker had a question mark scar for some reason
Sylvester McCoy went on a rant on the Eastenders set saying "I don't understand why those BBC Enterprises people can't get us all together for nor money, but when JNT makes a few calls, we're all here with our boots blacked - doing it for nothing! There must be something wrong!"
"The cast hated working on it"
You don't speak for everyone.
Yes, Dimensions in Time was atrocious... but as anniversary years go, 30 was arguably better than 40...
omg, too funny you mentioned Time Lash. I knew the guy who wrote that! He also wrote a couple of episodes of EastEnders, too. 😀
Dimensions in Time is brilliant.
Dimensions in Time is canon.
THANK YOU!
The story of DARK DIMENSION's cancellation is even worse than you might think, since it was never actually officially commissioned...and nobody knew who would actually produce it. That being said, there's an animated version here on UA-cam, and it's...slightly better. I look forward to your video on it!
Dimensions in Time wasn't an anniversary special, it's not even canon. It was just an overlong charity skit.
12:23 "BANG and the Dimension's gone!" 😄
LOVED some of the live action bits in this! You should do more in line of the theme song sketch
The only way this is salvageable is if you imagine it as a nightmare the 7th Doctor had mid-regeneration
Sad this is Victoria's only return and the Rani's last.BTW SJS's costume is one she wore in last story of her time on show (plus a Beret)🎩
You had to BE there. For a 14 year old, this was brilliant viewing
The 3d craze started in the 1950's originally. Television was new and movie companies were threatened so created a gimic, 3D!
Sorry, I meant that it was Children in Need's gimmick in 1993
@@HarboWholmes In 2005 I did an investigation into the progress of 3-D tech and was assured that the Chinese were almost ready to release a glasses-free version, as well as flat screen TVs you could roll up or paste on your wall like a poster. At that rate, by now we should've been watching the 2023 Children In Need special as a Whologram!
@03:06 "A warning from the year 2010. You;'re still on TV'. The year Noel presented 'Are You Smarter than a 10 Year Old?', only two years after 'Noel's HQ'. Anyone remember that stinker featured on Charlie Brooker's show?
As a low-budget charity special… it’s acceptable.
As THE 30th anniversary special… yeah it’s bad…
Hahaha, the dancing, the kneeling, the torturing ,the ears bleeding, the finale of death!! That's the theme music for this monster lol!!
3rd-when they said he was thick,I thought they were referring to his waist line!! Prolly the BEST damn line outta the whole damn thing!!🤣🤦♂️✌️🍻🤘
yep, it was cack, and i do have it on tape, as i recorded both parts at the time,, well at least we did get all the surviving doctors together (well almost, Tom not doing it properly, again!)
Tom Baker holding the distinction of seemingly being the only Classic Doctor to not reappear in character in any specials (outside of this… thing), with even Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy appearing in The Power of the Doctor, and… I suppose you could count The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.
0:50 "I suffered Dimensions in Time so you don't have to."
Too late. I saw it when it was first shown....
i was thinking... can anything be worse than the absorbalov episode. then you said it was part of noel's house party. and i realised it would be likely to be worse than anything i can imagine.
We need to someone get Big Ron into the tardis because he is nice
Baker continues his role of being the only one to not participate in crossovers like everyone else.
I mean at least he filmed something.
Oh I don't agree. "Star Wars Holiday Special" is a masterpiece next to this.
That Dr Who theme as bad as it was, is better than Sylvester McCoys one.
Is there a reason why the lady at 1.18 is wearing a sticker showing Tintin's faithful friend Snowy?
Good review of Dimensions in Time! Thank goodness this was not broadcasted in the states! The story does not make any sense and when did the story get so complicated? It is so complicated like Thomas and the Magic Railroad. I would have gone with the original 30th Anniversary special Lost in the Dark Dimension and someone adapted into an animation on UA-cam.
Is it bad you've made me want a Doctor Who and Thomas the Tank Engine crossover now?
@@mattevans4377 That is a crossover I would like to see that. I wonder which Doctor you would have to do this crossover?
Is this some kind of sick joke comment? 😆
Love the retcon from First Frontier that this was the Doctor’s nightmare
Well, that makes me glad I never saw the Star Wars special, or rewatched my off air VHS copy of Dimentions in Time!!!
Very well received "Star Beast".
Someone's been sticking their fingers in their ears and saying "Lalalalalala!"
It’s good. People missing the entire point of the episode.
LOL HS2 is good value compared to motorways of the same length - and is mostly money on building stations, which no other countries include in the calculation of cost per mile
Your reference to Timelash made me laugh...
Dimensions in time is hated by many but it's ironic that NuWho is more Eastenders now than Dr Who - it was predicted 😂
I remember watching this, and being so disappointed :p
Made all the weirder years later when Eastenders showed up as a tv show within the world of Doctor Who :p
Not to mention Leela and Mel turning up in Albert Square themselves :p
This was the final nail in the coffin for classic who in my opinion if only we got the dark dimension as the 30th anniversary special
“Worst piece of Doctor Who media ever”
Idk, at least it’s only 15 minutes with both parts combined. ‘Torchwood: Miracle Day’ is a 10 hour top to bottom disaster 🤮
11:40 That’s almost an insult to the Holiday Special. At least it gave us Boba Fett and a few other blink-and-you’ll miss it gems.
Soooo next week is Zagreus right?
The 3D effect worked by having a dark lens on one eye which made the brain see that image later. Which means things moving the right appeared to be in front of things moving to the left. Which explains the camera constantly moving to the left and the constant spinning. It did work quite well though.
yep bad until Jodie arrived then every one of the episodes was just as bad as the last hehehehe
Dimensions in time, has a narrative of a Racka Racka video, on drugs and actually makes Xavier: Renegade Angel, seem like it's easy to follow.
Succotash succotash call us up and win some cash
Based on that title, if it isn't "The moon is an egg, I won't be able to trust..."
Oh, worst holiday special.... Never mind..
Ughh...
God I can’t believe the title sequence melted harbos brain maybe that’s what the 456 used to kill clem McDonald
omg I remember this from when I was a kid lol. I had forgotten it and I think that may have been mental self preservation
