I'm currently 20 hours into playthrough number two. I didn't even realize on my first playthrough that I never found Gale and I was like 70 hours in by the time I even knew he existed.
I am in act 3 of 2nd play through. I cannot believe how much stuff, is different this time around. Special, special game.
Dang yeah i like clearing the map, at least in the beginning of these games to avoid missing stuff like that
I watched someone play that missed 4 characters in act 1 (Astarion, Wyll, Karlach, and Lae'zel). They went into act 2 with a 3 character party...his created character, Shadowheart, and Gale.
lol this happened to me with Lae’ zel. I never went up the little hill to free her thinking she died on the Nautiloid😂
@ShadowProject01 i almost missed her too because shes in like a little alley trail that doesnt look like itd have anything there
Here is what makes this game incredible. So many reviewers played this game and they all had different experiences that still equaled to Game of the year. That just shows the kind of quality work that larian put into the game.
Nah, its just people discovering crpgs for the first time lol, we already had disco elysium but not many people played it, this game with the cutscenes just appealed to more
Well said.
@@teodorcaraba979 I've played tons of cRPGs in my time, including OGs like BG1 and BG2. This is, by far, the most impressive cRPG I've ever played, with a massive amount of dialogue that is all voiced. The production value is insane. It's more accessible than games like Pillars of Eternity, which has a ton of written dialogue, but can be flat out boring because you feel like you're reading a college essay instead of actual character interaction. Just because the game went for a more relatable story and accessible characters don't make these other cRPGs better. They're not better. BG3 is the best cRPG ever made, hands down. The attention to detail combined with the production value sets it apart by a country mile.
BG3 is the best CRPG ever made *for you* . I respect your opinion - but it’s just that: an opinion. As someone who’s also played a crap ton of CRPGs (OG Fallout, Planescape: Torment, Tides of Numenera, Avernum, Shadowrun Returns, Wasteland 2 & 3, Disco Elysium, Pillars of Eternity, Encased, Pathfinder WotR, etc.) I tried BG3 *three times* with very different builds/styles and bounced off it each time before finishing Act 1. While I do find the world’s reactivity impressive, the story, setting, companions and game flow just don’t do it for me, or keep me hooked for the long-haul. By contrast, I’m currently playing through Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader - a game with objectively weaker ‘production value’, and crunchier combat mechanics - and yet I’m completely engrossed in every moment, excitedly looking forward to each play session.
BG3 has obviously clicked with many outlets and players - but I believe it’s also been the recipient of outsized hype and sensationalism. Sure, it has polished production values, which make for a very cinematic CRPG. But I’d argue that mechanically, it’s just D&D 5E with a rather boring, clichéd set of companions.
@@awakenedtarot7306 Factual.
Look... There are things I don't like about BG3. There things that, for example, DOS2 does better than BG3. *However...* the total package blows everything else out of the water. Would I like to see a deeper crafting system in BG3? Hell yeah. Do I even remember that desire 99.95% of the time I'm playing BG3? Nope.
I heavily recommend following through with Astarion on a different playthru, he became my favorite companion and I never take him out of my party. His VA won awards for his role as Astarion for good reason. I absolutely love this game
Astarion is quite possibly one of my favorite characters in all of gaming, right up there with Varric from dragon age and Akechi from persona 5. He's honestly just such a special character, and Neil absolutely brought him to life in a way I don't think any other voice actor could have. (It also makes me laugh that Neil apparently picked up Astarion's giggle and started doing that in his everyday life)
Asolutely agree! All of the companions are phenomenal, but Astarion is something special. I have a friend who instantly despised him and refused to ever speak to him in camp or put him in her party, but then she started hearing about the rest of us in our group of friends talking about where his story went, how we were able to influence his arc, how he affected our own characters' journeys, and how emotional the climax of his story was. Our minds were blown, and she had no idea what we were talking about, realizing she'd missed a massive chunk of story because she hadn't given Astarion the chance to tell his story. That's the thing about not just Astarion but all the companions -- you can't ever take them at face value or think they don't have the capacity to change, good or bad. There are depths you'd never imagine were there until you take the plunge, and it's crazy how much your character can help influence their journeys. It's so, so worth it to break past Astarion's protective walls, whether you go the "redemption" or "corruption" path with him. It's incredibly meaningful and it's easy to understand why his VA is getting so much love and recognition.
And some of us just DON'T like him. Maybe accept it?
@@SelineSnapeok relax dude, lol
@@SelineSnape That is okay, but when you don't like a character and never are willing to get to know them, then the opinion of not liking hem is a bit weak. If you play through Astarion's story and then realize "Nah" then it is fine. Most people judge a book just by the cover tho.
55 hours in and I’m blown away with how great it is. I haven’t felt this way about a game in a good long while. Probably not since Red Dead 2.
I’m planning on getting a PS5 in a few months and want to try it out! I love Red Dead II and it’s probably one of my favorite games. How does it compare?
@@blitzball4lyfe823It's nothing like RDR2 at all. BG3 is peak though
Elden ring tho. But yea otherwise I agree 😅
I’ve had this problem recently I can not get into a game after red dead 2 and re playing the Witcher 3. I might have to give this a go. I’m brand new to BG so il be going in blind but I think il give it a go
Same! I've been waiting for a game that dethrones RDR2.
It's kinda ironic dragon age origins was called the spiritual successor to baldur's gate and now baldur's gate 3 is called the spiritual successor to dragon age origins.
It really isn't, it's just the sequel to BG 1&2. A spiritual successor is when you want to make a sequel to something but don't have the IP.
DAO was called a spiritual successor to BG because Bioware didn't have the rights to BG anymore and had to make their own IP.
It's not a spiritual successor to Dragon Age: Origins.
It's a sequel to Baldur's Gate 2 and a spiritual successor of DOS:II.
BG3 shares no design similarities to DA:O, other than the fact that both games are fantasy RPGs.
@@Spr1ggan87BG3 is a sequel in name only imo. It doesn’t play or feel anything like BG1&2
@@Childofbhaal Outside of the combat being turn based and the world/map design being closer to NWN. it feels very much like what i expect of a modern BG game. Not that I'm happy with the story and choices in Act 3. If it had RTWP combat it would play just like Pillars of Eternity and Pathfinder both of which play exactly the same as BG 1&2.
@@ChildofbhaalPlay. Sure. Feel. That's nothing but your opinion. Which you're entitled to, but in no way is that a fact.
As a poor gamer dad i buy a lot of games for my kids... that being said I think i found a game that can keep me happy for a few years... a forever game where i dont feel the need to get the next big thing... nothing compares to this for now.
The animations look so good because it was all mocap in the dialogue scenes. I think it was something like 240+ actors to voice and mocap every npc. Larian really put the effort in and I love that it paid off and they’re getting the recognition they deserve.
My first Larian game was DOS 2 a few years ago.
Yeah its nothing tricky really, they just put in a ton of effort and knew exactly wanted to make. Helps when you're independent and not hamstrung by deadlines.
Im still playing baldurs gate. Mostly because i am too busy to devote long spurts. Im 60 hours in. And i love it. Amazing immersion, decision trees. Characters. No quests feel like busy work. Very engaging. I would gladly pay double for this quality of a game
Yeah great point there is literally no busywork!
Not too mention all of the different ways to approach a situation. You’re almost just limited by your imagination lol.
Why don't you gift it to a friend or something. Show your support that way!
@@nickohhhthe only busywork is inventory management, but it's a small problem compared to the awesomeness of the game
Oh yah well there is that! 😅 But yeah you forgive it don't you coz the game's so good. I would LOVE to try help them declutter their inventory system tho!@@alexwtf80
I didn't know the game existed until a few days before launch. I've now logged over 500 hours into it and it's become my favorite game of all time. The characters in this game alone have resonated more with me than anything I've ever played, and I was glued to their stories from start to finish. That's not even mentioning the soundtrack, the world design, the choices mattering, and the reactivity of it all. I've since gifted the game to two of my friends and one of them now has more hours than I do, and the other is not far behind.
Welcome, I'm glad you made it!
Curious, have you ever played D&D? Because I'm even more impressed you fell in love so fast if you haven't!
@user-jt1js5mr3f Nope. I've never played DnD. I'd definitely be willing to give it a shot now though.
@@patrioticbat it is amazing how well they adapted it for bg3. You’ll find some differences, of course, but you’ll find the character creation incredibly similar, along with all of the abilities.
Larian’s last game, Divinity original sin 2, was my entrance to D&D, so it’s really cool they’ve done it again
Same. Trying to figure out how I missed this. Having a great time tho. Just started act 3.
I could be your friend. Gift it to me 😂. Haha jk I can’t wait to get this game eventually when it’s on sale, and I hope my friends like it too. Have you tried the multiplayer together?
Non turned based player here. Never touched 'em. But I got this for xbox series x because of all the reviews, and it was overwhelming. I was getting frustrated and lost. I just didn't know what the hell I was doing. Now I am starting to get into a groove and I am really liking it. I have so much more to learn.
Larian are wizards and BG3 is a masterpiece. I'll be playing it for years to come. Dark Urge here I come baby!
I keep finding new ways to do things.
I'm going solo. No companions. The options are amazing. I love this game.
One of the best ever. Easily.
Solo and controlling only one character? No party to bring along?
Funny, when Matt released a video talking about BG3 days before release or on release day, can't remember, I was curious but what sold me on it was a simple sentence:
"If you're a fan of Dragon Age Origins, this is a must play for you"
And I thought to myself "Say no more" I finished watching the video and immediately got the game and you weren't wrong, the only reason this game became my #1 game ever is because it feels like a spiritual successor, dare I say that both DAO and BG3 share #1 in my eyes, mainly due to the sheer amount of content in DAO that expands the story and beyond.
So thanks Matty, I had a wonderful time playing this game thanks to your input, glad to hear you also finished your journey as well, can't wait to see what Larian has in store for the future.
Play Pathfinder series too is a great game too
the funny thing is that DAO was designed as a spiritual successor to Baldurs Gate 2
@@guilhermemiranda4998 I am currently playing Kingmaker and having a hard time, not used to full RPGs but very enjoayble despite the learning curve!
I'm noticing you comment on the smooth, natural movement of the characters... They look natural because they are! The cast did EXTENSIVE motion capture work for everything from walk animations to combat to cutscenes - to the point where they had a team of intimacy coaches for the romance scenes. Neil Newbon comments on it extensively in interviews because mocap is kind of his Thing. I'm so glad so many people love it as much as I do!
It really shows in the end product. Just looking at games where they did minor mocapping for the facial textures but nothing past its jarring.
Finished my first campaign finally last night after 140 hours. Immediately went back to continue a 2nd character I made during the first campaign. This game is once in a lifetime amazing.
Indeed, Baldur's Gate 3 is a cultural phenomenon.
It scratched that Dragon Age: Origins itch and i love it for that!
BG3...has become my favorite game of all time! Took over the spot from Skyrim.
I could watch a review from you 10 years after release and still like the video! This game is definitely my goty. It’s been too long since a game has made me feel this way, the timing for me is a blessing as well
When it hits, it hits.
Astarian is definitely the "I can make him better" or "I can make him worse" character lol.
idk how my first playthrough was around 450 hours and I missed ENTIRE AREAS of act 1, 2 and 3. i dont care what anyone says, every act is MASSIVE!
scratched the tabletop d&d itch for me, since my college group all moved away a decade ago. Also, the fact that your choices actually effect the story made it so good. I can't wait to see what Larian makes next.
I’m currently 300 hours in on multiple characters and still only in act 2. I cannot be decisive and kept wanting to start again hahaha
i know how you feel! i've started probably 10 characters
Just do what I do and play multiple at the same time. Helps give you insight while playing each save but it can feel repetitive.
I finally just got to Act 3 on my first character and got totally overwhelmed! I have no idea where to go or what to do! A lotta pressure because I’ve got 3 characters to follow! Plus, I’m playing Honour mode with a friend. We’re still in Act 1 , though-and I’ve played that so often I’m like an expert on Act 1 now! 😂
@@JosieJOK Wait till you get hit by some of those legendary actions almost ended my run a couple times already make sure you read boss stat sheets before you act
Man I just got to act 3 after 90+ hours and got immediately overwhelmed when I entered the city of Baldurs Gate just past Rivington. I had to take a break but I will go back to it because I gotta finish it. I'm sad though because I screwed up Karlachs quest and forgot to talk to the teifling blacksmith and found out he died in act 3. Couldn't reload because I deleted a bunch of older saves. Guess I will have to do her quest in a second playthrough. Thanks Matty for the video
I hope there is a surge of DND like games similar to this one. Larian is the best, but other studios should take note and try to develop stuff more like this.
I mean technically there are the Pathfinder games too.
There is the Solasta game which adapts the DnD 5e ruleset exactly (BG3 made tweaks and changes) but oh boy if you play Solasta AFTER BG3 it can be a real struggle (presentation and gameplay wise) I only recommend it if you want a true 5e ruleset experience
@@Tamaki742 yes i hope that their next games would invest to cutscenes. I think that extra effort is what makes BG3 different from their previous titles. I hope Owlcat games are gonna take some cues from it.
Not just DnD like games, some IPs with pen and paper roots (i'm looking at you, Vampire the Masquerade) to take a shot on making cRPG rather on conventional video game genres.
@@Xanshi Man, what's going on with the sequel now, though? Last time I heard it got handed over to The Chinese Room.
By not giving Astarian a chance people are legit missing the performance of the year. The fact the actor is sweeping should be enough to give the character a go. 😢
Same
All the actors delivered amazing work, there's no reason to put him on a pedestal. Not everyone will like every character.
@@SelineSnapeIt’s true that all of the actors are fantastic. It’s also true that Niel Newbon delivered an incredible performance as Astarion and won two awards for it, and that he deserves the recognition.
Probably because he disapproves of anything that isn't evil. They should have made him more morally grey like shadowheart or lae'zel.
Best VA I've ever experienced in Vidya. And just a bad ass character to have in the party
One of the greatest video games ever created, among Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2.
There are sooooo many great games bro.
@AP90x very few reach the epicness and perfection of W3 and RDR2
You can't knock gollum over like that bro ! That was a yearly contender
Don't forget Cyberpunk 2077
@@AD3SPG Rise of Kong is a bit better, def GOTY material. Got sidestepped hard at the game awards.
For anyone reading this comment who loved baldurs gate 3 and want more, Larian made to more similar games they are regarded as masterpieces, divinity original sin 1 and 2. Play them, you will love them entirely.
Play Pathfinder séries of Owlcat Masterpieces
@@guilhermemiranda4998 played them 🎉. Got wrath of the righteous last Xmas. Kingmaker i played when it released 😀.
Currently playing battle brothers (second play through), but this year also played wartales, thronebreaker, path of exile 2, and a bit different but I also played and loved elden ring through the summer. Apparently the lead creator of path of exile wants to make a turn based game on the scale of bg3, hoping Microsoft give the go ahead
Probably the best game I've ever played.
I've had so much fun, trying out different builds for me & my characters.
I'm almost finished with my 1st run, can't wait to start the 2nd.
This game is so jam packed with content and things to do. And it's not filler. It doesn't feel like busywork. It is just a joy to explore. I'm almost 60 hours in and haven't even left act 1
I'm 50...I've played a lot of games during that time. This is far and away the best game I've ever played. This is my first play through and I can't wait to restart it and do it again. I'm sad that I've almost finished it!
I’m about 45 hours in (getting close to the end of Act 1, I think)… Loving it so far. Just kinda mind-blowing how good it is.
Liking and commenting for the algorithm, and also for Baldur's Gate 3. What a phenomenal achievement.
About your comment of the animations looking lifelike: it’s because they actually motion captured everything. All those conversations. Not only should we be wowed by everything being voiced… it’s all mo-capped too 🤯
I did a regular play through and loved it. Started looking at the mods the community has added and whoa the game is even more amazing. I now have a Gnome artificer/bard that has been one of the best DnD chars I have ever played. And each time I go through I keep finding areas I never noticed before or different ways of solving a situation.
I am currently 300 hour one regular playthrough one co-op playthrough and my third honor mode try and I still just look forward to every day to playing it. I usually get bored of everything easy rarely finish a movie almost never finish a games i player for about 20-30 hours most games and then move on to something else so they definitely did something right I love this game it might be the best of all time.
I lost a good 9 hours of gameplay due to my save getting deleted. Happened to me twice with a new character as well.
170 hours play through 1, 30 so far into #2 and I have ran into so much of Act 1 missed in my original 50-60 hours there. I am fully sold on the notion you must replay this many times over because race and class alongside the character sex even impacts things (like how strongly Astarion comes onto you in dialogue). The agency and role playing here is what I always wanted in Cyberpunk and I love that game a lot too. This has challenged my longstanding #1 for Mass Effect for years.
Yeah, I played Cyberpunk for the first time AFTER Baldur's Gate 3 and it definitely didn't help Cyberpunk's first impression... Compared to BG3 Cyberpunk feels like it has almost no choices/reactivity at all!
I smile inside seeing that you named your character Rufus Albarea. Nice to see the Trails love going so strong
Bg3 is easily one the best RPG's in existence.
A masterpiece.
Maybe if you haven't played the first two games, Larian took a dump on the story and characters from those games so it drops points for me.
Also imho the plot and choices in Act 3 are awful.
Thanks for this "late" review. Always wonder how people can review a new game within days of launch (even if you get an early copy). I trust late reviews much more than early reviews, because you have had time to think more deeply about the game. But I bought this game years ago on early access because I have LOVED Larian since Divine Divinity (2002). The success of Baldur's Gate 3 and Larian Studios have made the world feel like a happier place. The good guys WON!
You already answered ur own question...those reviewers put in the same hrs, if not more...lol
I plan on picking this game up in the next few days. Can't wait to give it a go!
7:26 I was wondering why a Kiseki character was in baldurs gate 3 lol, love that you named your character after rufus
I see that Kevin Graham shoutout there Matty, Trails/Kiseki truly has taken up residence in your head rent-free hasn't it? (as a fan of the series I couldn't be happier)
speaking of which, did you see the Kai no Kiseki reveal?
on my third play through. still discovering new things. the story keeps changing every time. still absolutely loving the game. what a masterpiece.
Been playing since August. Currently sitting around 600+ hours, on 8th campaign. still finding new stuff. No social life. No regrets.
It’s so fun. When I defeated the Hag in the bog and saved the woman and she turned out to be pissed I was blown away. I love how the game weaves its stories and the acting is amazing
@@LeonJohnson-yi3hg If you managed to tell her that Auntie Ethel killed her brothers before she gets sent to the cage, she won't be mad at you... yeah the writing is superb and soooo many branches
It's funny because the ancestor of Dragon Age is Baldur's Gate 1&2 (those were the first really big BioWare games that set the course for those that followed)
So we could say "back to basics"
It's funny actually, I preferred BG2 to KotOR, but it was overtaken by BG3 this year in my heart
If you haven't done it, when you come back to this game you will have to do a Dark Urge it's a truly incredible story, much more linked to BG1&2 and more connected to the events of this opus
I fucking lover Lae Zel she has such a good character growth and she is so funny despite being serious.
I loved DOS 1 and 2, but this game is at a different level. It is an awesome achievement. I started playing this game when it first came out in early access. When it finally released I purposely took a direct route to the finish(with Lae'zel, Gale and Shadowheart), so that my next playthrough would have new areas to explore with a totally new crew. I will be bummed when I have finally seen/experienced it all, but then I'll play co-op! Wow! Can't wait.
Baldur’s Gate reignited my love for gaming and brought me back to my days as a kid spending many sleepless hours playing Skyrim. I was so invested in my character and the story. Though one thing I wish they had was a merchant that appears in your base/camp. Said merchant should sell gear you missed from previous acts or gear from other merchants you might have killed. I needed an essential piece of gear from a goblin trader for example but since I killed him my build basically fell apart. Had to find a substitute but my build wasn’t as “perfect”.
perfect timing for this. I got a steam deck oled and i've been debating picking it up
Do so promptly lol
its a game of the year winner and a good single player RPG at that, if that fills your taste in games its a pretty easy choise.
The deck can run it?
@@mycelia_ow act 3 gets a little sketch, but yes
This is actually perfect timing Matty as I just got this on Xbox. Appreciate the patience and full review. Enjoy the holidays and Merry Christmas!
Im just glad it was able to come to xbox this year waiting would suck
If larian made an old republic game it would be amazing the original KOTOR games were based on D&D for its combat and class systems
@@wakeup3843 I'd trust InXile too.
Just jumped in on Xbox. Found myself very in over my head, with very little dnd knowledge or strategy experience. Just finishing up the goblin camp and I feel like I'm getting the hang of a few things. Very fun if you are willing to keep pushing and learn
Yeah the only knowledge of DnD that I have is watching the kids play on Stranger Things 😂 Took me a while to get used to it.
Watch some guides. There's no shame in that and having a good grasp of the mechanics will just make the experience more enjoyable.
And, like, D&D knowledge isn't essential to grok BG3. I only vaguely know about D&D 5e and I picked this game up quickly. However, I have played a fair number of crpg's, that's why it was easier for me.
Same. But I found once my team reached level 4, the fights became a lot easier.
I'm now in the underdark area and loving the game now.
This game is so amazing I'm 25 hours in just got to act 2 haven't been to moonrise yet. My favorite thing is the companions always have something to say or imput on what your doing or have done
I remember you mentioned something about not liking Lae’zel at first in your impressions video and I was eager to see if your opinion of her would end up changing like mine did.
I like a gal with some sass ans grit to her. She was ok in my book off the rip
I’ve never really played a game like this, but it sounds just like playing a game of some of my favorite books, but you’re actually the main character. Sounds great. I hope to get this soon
Excellent content man! I wish you tube creators didn't have to worry so much about algorithms and timing. Have a great Holidays!
Been sitting on the fence about this game for a while now, and I'm sold bro. Gonna have to check this out.
I'm at the beginning of act 3 in my main playthrough and in the middle of act 1 in my Dark Urge playthrough, and man, the vibe is drastically different. Companions and people around you have much different dialogue and even scenes you could never have without the Dark Urge.
Can’t wait to play! Currently loving octopath 2, playing Daggerfall next (random, I know), and THEN BG3 for the Xbox. Eating well over here!!
Played BG3 and I am still playing it. I love it. I enjoy your channel; I am glad I subscribed.
I waited for the Xbox drop. I’m 18 hours in and I’m really enjoying it. 1st time playing a D&D type RPG so I’m constantly looking up UA-cam videos for tips and tricks.
I still have trouble getting into turn-based combat, even after playing thru and absolutely loving both P5 and P5R. Both Starfield and Phantom Liberty coming out just 1-2 months after BG3 didn’t help either lol.
Nevertheless, I’m planning on finally giving this game a real shot this weekend and during my holiday break after owning it since they announced early access. This video has got me stoked!
have fun bro
It honestly feels more like a strategy game than typical turn based, and I say that as someone who has played a *ton* of turn based games haha. It relies a lot on things like your environment (high ground, wet floor you can electrocute, alcohol you can blow up with a fire spell, etc etc) and the magic feels so much different from most turn based games
You mean Trashfield lol.
@@stephanmarcouxdrums4877 good one Stephan 😐
Bro, MATTY: Astarion's storyline will have you crying like a baby by the end. He has an amaaaaazing arc. Super well written by Adam Smith AND acted by Neil Newbon. Sublime.
I made it all the way to baulder's gate before stopping for bug fixes/new content then as time passed I got distracted enough to leave it behind and now I've completed another CRPG(Colony Ship) which was amazing 1/1000 the budget of BG3 but the setting and writing were great. Now I'm taking my first dive into the Warhammer universe with Rogue Trader another CRPG. I feel like I'll probably come back to BG3 whenever they release the definitive edition it seems safe to assume that will come when you look at their past games.
I am and did the same hahaha, and agreed.
They might even have a dlc coming with how much support and sales they got.
This is beyond anything they imagined
2nd favorite game all time right behind Fallout NV. Absolutely one of the best games to come out at least in the past decade 300+ hours in about to start an Honor play through to get my final achievement
I think you did the best verdict of them all. Without getting emotional or taking too much time, you are saying exactly the right things. Using those precise words like ''spectacular'', ''triumph from top to bottom'' and ''work of art'' to point out the over delivery is absolutely spot on. I'm at 400 hours into the game and I'm at the very beginning of Act 3 with only 1 character. I did create and delete a lot of character. And now with the Honour mode, I really belief it does put the game on another level in terms of decisions making and we can't load back, 1 save. It is intense, the chance of dying, losing our entire journey and character change everything. I do care more about my Honour character, but you have to face the hard truth if everything is falling apart.
I’m with you where I’m a huge Dragon Age Origins fan and while I like 2&Inquistion, Origins is just the best.
The only game I bought this year at full price, larian deserves all of the praise they are getting.
MrMatty, love your content, thank you! According to Steam, I have 582.3 hours into BG3, with 2 complete playthroughs and 75 hours in EA. I literally have 4 other custom playthroughs I want to do, plus all the Origin characters (to see their stories). I am 60 y/o, so I am not sure I will live long enough to finish this game 🤣 So amazing. Love it. GOTY x 10.

Larian is basically CD Projeckt Red right now with BG3 being their Witcher 3
After about a dozen different starts, I think I am finally gonna get into Act 2.
Youve already made a new character to play a new build
I'm an old gamer who has a horrible time with any games that require combat. Because of that, I have avoided games like BG3. Last year, I stumbled upon Dragon Age: Origins. I had no idea what I was doing but stumbled through to the end, completely engrossed in the story. I had never played turned-based combat and really got to like it in DA:O. I heard about BG3 and a number of people I know were playing it right out of the shoot. I held off for a while. Partially due to my limited income (retired and all) and partially due to intimidation. But I finally made the leap after having to purchase a new SSD to upgrade my already good computer. And boy am I glad I did. You nailed the review and how I feel about it. The story is amazing. I'm 64 hours in and feel like I've barely scratched the surface. I'm still in act 1 and will likely be so for quite a while. I'm taking my time, staying away from Discord and Google to figure things out. I feel like the next playthrough, I'll have a totally different experience. This game is deserving of the kudos it's getting.
I bought it a few days ago on xbox... i kinda regret it. I used to have a life before playing this game hehehe
Ive never played anything like this. It is truly special
I was originally turned off by the turned based combat and janky looking camera I’m more of a first-third person camera, high action run and gun less strategic guy but this game surprised me with how in depth turn based can really be, the only other turn based games I’ve had fun with is mf pokemon. Anyways, hitting combining spells, environment, weapons, buffs, movement all makes this super satisfying. In regards to the camera and the out of combat movement I still am not fully used to it only being 10-15 hours in but honestly it’s so much smoother than I could have imagined. But the best part about this game and the reason I gave it a chance was the world, storytelling and characters(including character build / role playing potential) it’s nothing short of a perfect world to me. It already has that DnD groundwork which I have admittedly not experienced really at all, always been more invested in the world of elder scrolls and Tamriel (skyrim is my favourite game of all time) but this world I think blows that one out of the water in terms of a living breathing free world. I love the opportunity for essentially any thing. You wanna make a ninja monk guy you can, you wanna make a pin point accurate ranger, spell slinging wizard, hulking warrior or raging barbarian you can, and the best part is all of these can be turned from a general build to a hyper specific build down to the finest details. I’ve seen tutorials on how to make Goku or Batman in this game. It’s genuinely amazing. Let’s just say i bought this game 2 days ago and while I have the time over the last end of this Christmas break I’m gonna play the crap out of this game 10-15 hours in 2 days Is probably going to turn into 25-30 hours in 4 days
Here we go, started my playthrough 2 days ago
I’m surprised Matty, nor anyone really is talking about the major issues the Xbox version has been having. Save files get deleted and people have lost their entire campaigns. I myself got to act 2, only to wake up the next day to find my save had been deleted. So had to start over again… just for it to happen a second time. The game has dropped from 5 to 4 star on the Xbox store.
You are *SERIOUSLY* missing out, by not giving Astarion a chance.... He is one of the best-written characters I have ever met in a game. I say this, btw, as somebody who almost exclusively plays good protagonists.
Thing is you can have Astarion on a 'good' playthrough. He might disapprove of some things, but his dialogue at camp makes up for it (plus the whole semi-redemption thing with his quest).
As the story goes on he literally only gets better, he's sooooo good
@@chocopuddingcup83 Oh, absolutely. I just mentioned it, though, because this might not be immediately apparent to a 'good-aligned' player.
@@kermut unless he ascends of course, then he only gets worse
I finally finished my first playthrough, clocking in at 150ish hours, last week. I initially started with Bard/Warlock, but transitioned into Bard/Rogue/Fighter with dual hand crossbows. Being a Baldur's Gate fan, I went with The Dark Urge, choosing to resist it. This was easily my game of the year (also dethroned Lies of P for me). The way the story not only honoured my choices but constantly rewarded them in such satisfying ways was just unbelievable. The Dark Urge was, for me, an almost perfect answer to the problem of custom characters in Larian games feeling like they're disconnected from the world/narrative at large. It brought me back to that Dragon Age: Origins/Baldur's Gate II era, where my character felt like not only my own, but a fixture within the world. And the hero's journey that The Dark Urge allows? I'll remember that forever.
I'm so glad I finished the game after the epilogues were introduced, as that felt like a love letter and a thank you to all of us that have been supporting the game since Early Access (not just us, though. For everyone).
A genuine masterpiece in every respect. One I can't wait to revisit (though I've been working on a co-op campaign with a friend, and that's been a blast).
After over 300h without reaching act 2, I LOVE honor mode. Finally, a mode I can play without the constant urge the save scum. Sure I'll fail hard in acts 2 and 3, but don't mind a failed heroic run if I can finally get through it - and gives me a long term goal.
After 600 hours in Starfield i never thought another game would give me such joy to play this year but i got Balder's gate 3 on Xbox and boom my mind has been blown, choice, story, companions, environment weapons, spells, combat , even the settings and difficulty were a surprise. Balder's gate 3 was and is worthy of that game of the year title.
There will be no definitive-edition.
It will be called the Absolute-Edition.
You're exactly right, the whole time I've been playing this I've been thinking to myself that this game was basically what I've wanted from every single dragon age games since origins and never gotten.
Buying my copy this week.
It's the GOTY, there's no need for final verdicts lol
Can't say i agree. Some games in the past have been named goty and they were trash. Like Dragon Age inquisition.
I don't like this game so it's GOTY for me
Tldr: yes. It won game of the year by a land slide and 2nd place wasn't even close
This video came at the perfect time I just recently got the game and was looking for some content around it to open youtube and see this video first
For video game design it may seem weird that you barely see the ultimate enemies in Act 1… but it TOTALLY makes sense in Tabletop D&D, particularly for 5E. Act 1 you are level 1-5 (maybe 6 if you do absolutely everything). This tier is meant to be local/regional heroes. Level 6-10 is where you get into kingdom/realm heroes. Past 10, you get into world saving heroes. So it does make sense if you think about the design in terms of being based on D&D 5E.
In 1965 I was 14 years old, in 2005 I was 54 Years old and played Oblivion, which was my first "video" game, so I'm an old guy playing games. I'm a gamer but I'm not skilled like my much younger player associates and I appreciate the draw of the complex detail of a well made game. Just speaking for myself I can't play something so intricate, though I marvel at what has been accomplished technically. I've watched your videos for the last few years, especially Bethesda games because I they allow me time to escape to my own place away from the shit that besets us daily. I give you respect for your insights so don't delay your vacation. See you next year.
I'm in act 3 and it's still amazing. So much depth and content
After 700 hours I started a modded playthrough on the new honor mode with my homie. I’m almost at 800 hours and we aren’t even through act 1 because of how punishing honor mode is, and yet I’m having more fun than ever in this game. How after 700 hours a game can get more fun is beyond me but this one is special.
I have over 500 hours in the game (a bit misleading as I have been playing since beta launch) and this game is a easy 10/10. If you like RPG's then like Matty just said, this is a must play.
Started my 3rd run and already know what I'll play the 4th time around lol.
I normally dont replay games but BG3 is just... different.
Xbox player so first run of the game, as a Forgotten Realms megafan I simply love the story and lore. As someone who didn't love DOS1 or 2 I was worried but they toned the goofiness way down and the combat is actually fun and enjoyable for me. DOS combat felt gimmicky and janky, like you had to use the environmental effects to win encounters.
I'm 350hrs into Baldur's Gate 3
Can see myself having at least 1000hrs+ eventually
Its...THAT....good
Let’s gooo!!! Just as I was looking up BG3 videos Marty finally decides to drop this 🙌🏻
I just finished my first playthrough and i gotta say its definitely in my top 5 list of the greatest games I've ever played. I've always wanted to play DnD and this was the best simulation of it. Well done Larian, I'll be looking forward to what comes next!
Damn, gonna try it. Never played it came to get motivation to buy it
Funny you called BG3 the Spiritual Successor to Dragon Age when Dragon Age was actually the spiritual successor to the original BG games.
I fucking love the modding community for this game. Currently on my 2nd playthrough with a army of 12 just killing everything
I put 460+ hours into it on my PS5 and I'm still not even close to done. There are still so many things I want to do, and I genuinely can't remember ever feeling this invested in a game before. It's truly magical
Dam that's a lot what number play threws that?
@@samuelstevens3438 Two completed play throughs, and I'm currently bouncing between four more. One is multiplayer, one is in act 3, the other two are in act 2. I also had two others that I gave up on. So eight characters total lol
I have this problem where I already I have an idea for a build/playthrough before I finish the one im on
How is it on console?
how do you ppl find so much time to play games???
