Just as how the Grey Knights are the best daemonologists in the imperium, I like that deathwatch marines are selected based on veterancy and expertise on various xenos and how to combat them. "Let's talk about the real reason Deathwatch was formed" and I responded in my head with "to retake Mandalore from Duchess Satine's pacifist government" 😂
Let's hope you mention my favorite fact of the Deathwatch in the video. As an Unforgiven, I love how basically all Deathwatch brothers from Unforgiven chapters are cover/sleeper agents that use the Deathwatch's influence to track down Fallen. This is possible thanks to the fact that the Dark Angels are one of the if not the best chapter with most presence in Deathwatch and one of its founding chapters.
Favourite Deathwatch moment is when Talon squad/Kill Team Karras are rushing through some underground tunnels as the GSC/‘Nids try to cut them off. (Spoilers) They get back to the Dread, a Lamenter by the name of Chyron… who is buried beneath a mountain of dead genestealers and cultists… just chillin’, waiting to ambush the next group. The idea of a dread playing “hide and seek” but also the fact that Chyron still had not accepted death. He didn’t stand and wait to be killed. He was pro-active and fully meant to complete the mission so the boys could get out.
I don't think the expectation of one Deathwatch squad winning against an Attack Moon is that ridiculous, considering my boy Cyrus could solo half the DoW2 campaign on his own with just some c4 and tripmines
Think about it: A R6 style 40k game where you play as deathwatch. Also another cool idea: A space marine, A sister of battle, a loudmouth Kasrkin, and a kreigsman grenadier as a suicide squad type game?
My favorite thing about the death watches that they are basically the king of the kit bash in terms of chapters. Doesn’t matter if you’re a space wolves kind of guy, or maybe you’re the one good night Lord left Post heresy. You always have the option to upgrade your guys to the death watch. It has something for everyone.
Love the deathwatch because they are literally a weird cryptic place that turns out to be a fucking daycare "Elite warriors" "Great honor to do your long vigil" "WATCH COMMANDER, BROTHER MALLUS STOLE MY GRUEL AGAIN" * Raven guard and their successors getting pissed off when their quiet corners of the tower get "discovered" by any other astartes * They literally act like children then get slapped in the pain chamber to have a really immersive full body experience through the eyes of another
I made an Alpha Legion Killteam out of the Deathwatch box and a Phobos unit, and then found out that they aren’t in the current edition. I even magnetized the arms for quick swapping weapons.
I recall when Deathwatch was first made a thing in the FFG ttrpgs, or at least first made into a *real* thing, where they were a fairly novel idea, and a way for a party to play marines from a variety of backgrounds and go into virtually any circumstance so that you could do what you wanted with your campaign. You would work with work with humans, fight chaos, learn things to better approach situations, work with xenos as much as fight them, etc.. Small varied teams meant players could be the marine they wanted, you were able to use virtually nay wargear, not even locked to imperial, and there was a big plot hook of semi-sentient xeno vaults at the centers of their watch fortresses (or at least the one that the system focused on you being from) that helped contain things, command the team, and provide gear as needed (though, it deemed that itself, so what you had to do with it you had to work out). Then GW got their hands on them. Variety of approach? Vastly diminished. Named characters? More focused, and way dumber. Just they hyper xeno-haters but to a level far beyond stupidity, and basically only appear in writing when GW needs to randomly slap down xenos from actually doing anything, even (or especially) if that thing would involve hindering chaos in *any* way. They've destroyed entirely safe anti-chaos tech caches because xenos may have made em, they gave a crone sword to slaanesh, etc. They went from one of my favourite things; a thing that expands the setting, makes sense, and lets you set up a ton of situations with a lore basis for... well, whatever, into just a GW tool to push marine-centrism, xenos never doing anything, and a way for marines to get the more options they were clearly lacking and let them do things that they have no right doing in the first place. Like be better at making projectile toxins than drukhari.
