    In this video I walk through the process of replacing VANOS solenoids on an N55 engine step by step. Start to finish this job will take approximately 1.5 hours for a beginner, less if you're familiar with the N55 engine or general auto mechanics.
    VANOS, short for "VAriable NOckenwellenSteuerung" (German), is BMW's variable valve timing system. VANOS is a variator system that varies the timing of the valves by moving the position of the camshafts in relation to the drive gear. The VANOS solenoids on N55 engines are more prone to failure at high mileage than in previous models, and may require replacement after 100K miles. In my case, I was starting to notice a rough idle when stopped (no codes, new spark plugs/coils) and sluggish/jerky acceleration at low speeds. I had already replaced the LPFP and HPFP, so those were both eliminated. Since the process is the same for cleaning, I opted to replace with new units.

    You should prime your engine before start it.
    Bmw says when you change the OFHG or Oil pan or Solenoid Vanos you should do it to avoid oil starvation.

      @@SingleMaltMotors you don't have to prime it. The oil settles at the bottom of the engine anyways so the circuit isn't really being disrupted.

      My friend works for Bmw and they do not prime anything…not even after doing the oil filter housing gasket.
      I’ve personally done 3 ofhg changes and did the prime process. We jus let the car idle for a good 7-10mins and done. They jus add that procedure to the labor time, well atleast in the shop he works at

    I've been looking to buy replacement Vanos solenoids, I've seen ones with the large holes at the long tubular body of the Solenoid, and others without these large holes. But the websites say either fit my vehicle (2011 BMW 535i). Not sure what is up with that.

      Which site are you shopping on? I'd recommend FCP Euro, also ECS Tuning

      @@SingleMaltMotors I've seen the ones with large holes on Europarts, but I've placed an order on PartsGeek, for ones that look more like what you've pulled out of your car.

      @@SingleMaltMotors Parts Geek had both the ones with or without those large holes, but their page says either fits my vehicle, yea its safer to go with ones without the large holes.

    Great video. My BMW 2014 f10 e55 cranks but doesn't start. Can this be the culprit?? Appreciate your response. Are the "exhaust and intake camshaft sensors" synonyms with the "Vanos" solenoids?? please excuse my ignorance.

    • @SingleMaltMotors
      @SingleMaltMotors  Місяць тому

      Hi friend, sorry to hear about the crank no start. Not likely VANOS, and no--the camshaft sensors are not the same as the VANOS. Hope that helps.

    Those old Solenoids are tough to get out.

      Indeed. If you're not reusing them, you can gently pry the connection with a long flat head

      For the 6 cylinder models. The V8 has 2 per bank.

      Hi friend, no problem. Make sure you lube the o-ring with a little motor oil. Ensure the solenoids are oriented correctly. Use a long screwdriver or the like to gently but firmly apply pressure from solenoid to press into block.
