Im currently going through depression, fucking sucks but this song is just...makes me ecstatic, gets me smiling and happy, hopeful....I cant describe it properly, but thanks. This performance has saved my life a few times, literally.
This song is like the most important in the world to me. It's electrifying and hopeful, I dare say one of the best compositions in musical history. I save it for important moments.
Keep pushing through for on the other side of depression awaits its polar opposite so use the depression as the fuel to get you there with an assist from the Pat Metheny Group
One of the Greatest Bands ever!!..... &...... Without doubt The Greatest Guitarist of my 70 years lifetime Live Long Pat Metheny ....ps R I P Lyle Mays , your contribution will be your legacy you will never be forgotten nor will your music !
What a testament to how great this band was that the live version is even better than the studio version. The song masterfully builds in intensity from the first note to the end of the song.
This is what happens when an American studious virtuoso combines emotions and genres from all corners of the planet. The result is as always pure , unadulterated orgasmic music. RIP Lyle!
I agree.Saw him by accident in Denver 1985 .Thats why Ive been to PMG concerts 5 more times over the years. There is no Jazz Fusion band any better!!! Its a total Experience!!!!!!!!!!!
His last few years he wasn't even in music anymore...just couldn't take the business end of it. Software development. Even a Supreme talent like he was reaches a point. He layed out every ounce of his immense creative juice that he had ...he left it on the field
I love Pat Methany! His music is so tranquil, I just like to relax when I'm listening to his music! This li a jazz concert is so nice! I had a chance to see him live around 1995. Great concert I've ever seen! 👍
This song is driving along the coastline at sunset, in a convertible, with the top down. With your significant other and your best friends. Wind in your hair, smiles, sunglasses.
You're so right. It has a traveling vibe to it. My parents used to play this on the long car rides to and from camping trips or visiting family upstate. I associate it with the rolling hills just south of the San Francisco Bay Area as you leave the central valley, going from the San Luis Resevoir to Casa de Fruta and Gilroy on State Route 152. It's a welcome relief from all that flat land -- and a bit of a thrilling drive.
The Depth and Bredth of Pat and Lyle as a team, and amplified as a whole in the entirety of the Pat Metheny Group, is both a sublime and beautiful thing. This song exemplifies that with stark clarity! It is "As It Is" ...PERFECTION! Thanks for posting feedbackbro!
GLORIOUS TUNE!!! Pat's music can help save this often stupid world!!!! For me it's HEAVEN to imagine say driving on a beautiful summer day in a convertible - with the top down - your girlfriend (whom u are absolutely NUTS about) is holding your hand, it's your first day of a 2-week vacation, & u are driving say along the gorgeous Columbia River in Oregon when 5:10 (& following) of this number hits (on your fab new car sound system) & you better just try to bottle up the tears!! (For u ARE driving after all !!) To top it off, we are now headed towards a world with MORE wisdom among many average people! MUCH less vegging in front of our "glass-teats" & "idiot-boxes"! MUCH less fear & panic & drinking the "Kool-Aid" that the mass-media puts out daily!! MORE belief that we can even be headed for a GLORIOUS & FABULOUS future - as humanity - IF we work together on some ACTUAL solutions to our problems! GO PAT!! HAVE to THANK-YOU for your AMAZING & INSPIRING music!!!
The rhythmic grooves they and Lyle lay down here are so flawlessly solid...unique swing feel at 3:18 under the first solo just one example...all rhythm section players should study THIS video for how it’s done!
When you feel really inspired and you get in the studio tryin to catch the vibe you have in mind. And then, after couple measure magic disapear !! This song feel so sponteanus, real definition or an artist !!!
Now THAT is how u play the drums for PMG. Though i love Danny. But my goodness. The best drummer for THIS band. Hands down. Just enhances the true soundscape of everything.
Sad because it’s over, glad because it happened. How fortunate are we to have lived and seen them in their time? The most fulfilling concerts I’ve ever seen.
Seeing Lyle Mays at the piano and keyboards. Im overwhelmed with a sense of satisfaction , and everything's ok just seeing him sitting there the master pianist that he is! Its had 2 have had a great impact on Pat everytime looking over at the piano and not seeing Lyle his friend, fellow musician, and composer missing ! His heart must ache as my heart aches 4 him. Years from now they'll still be talking about Pat Matheny Lyle May's and every musician that played with them, and they'll still be playing their music!
I’m buddhist and i practice Soka Gakkai Buddhism. August and September have been though for me, and only with Faith, practice, Study and Pat Metheny I could be happy in the middle of the storm. Im eternally gratefull
I took my boyfriend at the time to see Pat at the Pageant in St. Louis for his birthday. When he performed this song, everything seemed to be right with the world! I looked at my boyfriend, he was ecstatic and I was on cloud 9! I will never forget how this song made me feel! It continues to be one of my favorite songs!

Valeu Patrick Metheny
Ummm. Okay. That outtro solo 6:22 on was a mood changer in a very good way. Hard to feel down or angry when a band pours their heart out like they do here.
It gives me a feeling of winning. Accomplishment in life. I visualize myself already there and being who I want to be in life The track is 07:42 long on the album and it captures my heart first time playing it today. Plus its the opening song of the album. Played the whole album in the morning. Now I'm playing "As it is" on repeat I Am a Winner
IMHO one of the finest charts from this tremendous Album...that ushers in new band member Antonio Sanchez on the kit...plus Cuong Vu and monster Richard Bona....wholeheartedly disagree about it being elevator-ish....are you in any a composer of music?
Where can I get on that elevator to musical bliss mate? I remember hearing Across the Sky as the background music on a Qantas flight and was smiling ear to ear that a programmer PMG fan popped that in.
I'm trying to transcribe Rodby's line. Does somebody knows of an existing transcription? In some part is very hard to distinguish the bass... Thanks :)
Don’t know of one, but his lines and feel here are amazing! They really drive the entire thing overall, but he’s a such a master bass player, he supports perfectly as a core rather than trying at any point to front. His rhythmic incidentals are utterly unique. Something all bass players should study.
@@jjsc4396 totally agree! The rythmic originality is another problem, because very often what he plays is not intuibile. Once you figure it out, of course, you are amazed by the way he conceives comping :). Now I'm transcribing the part leading to pat's solo, but I can't figure out more than a few notes each day...
