So many people believe that the Nobel Prize is the highest archievement one can get. That's because hollywood and media made it out to be that way. I saw Pat Metheny with Gary Burton Quintet in the mid 70’s and again with his band at Vermont Jazz in ‘77. Not sure if Lyle Mays was there. I’d have to go back & find my slides. (35mm, K64 and Ektachrome) Who knew how far this formerly young man would go. You knew the cat was a bad dude on the axe but still…..it’s like Tony Williams @ 17 playing with Miles. You knew he was one of the best but the extent of his legacy was unknown. Now, in 2022, Lyle Mays has passed on and Pat Metheny is considered an old tiger. Funny how our perspective changes as the shadows stretch out behind us in our youth and then start to stretch out in front of us as we age. Shalom Aleichem to anyone who sees this

I love all genres of music but still jazz is foremost on my list . Always love Herbie but Pat Metheny is really killing the guitar love the sound of the bass and of course the drums. Can somebody resurrect this kind of music please. Bring back the golden age of jazz. I am old but not dead yet I still love to listen to this. Thank you premium UA-cam.

Sallie Mar, I don’t listen to music anymore like I used to but watching Hiromi with the trio is more than enough to assure me that creative music will never die, it will evolve and change. I can still recall seeing the CTI Jazz All Stars at Central Park. Grover playing Mr. Magic and really doing it right. These cats were all playing their best live. Creed Taylor had made jazz music commercially viable and the blending of R&B with pop elements had really permeated the music. Herbie did his Headhunters fusion of soul/r&b/electronic and then there was Pat in the late 70’s bringing it back to REAL.

As Frank Zappa once said, “Jazz is not dead. It just smells funny.”
But seriously folks, there is a lot of variety in what can be called Jazz. This kind of Fusion was something I remember well and I still love it. In certain circles, Swing is very much alive with young folks dancing up a storm. So, don’t knock it and try out new (to you) stuff!

Yes. I was really cerebral in listening for what and how they were playing and I found Herbs held the spotlight for me. His diverse, dynamic and percussive elements tickled me. I think if there were actually a 'best guitarist in the world' it would have to be a keys player and not an actual guitar player.

For me, Hancock defined “in the pocket” for keyboard players. Man, does he swing. I’d call him an athletic keyboard player, too-really quick, accurate, big hands, complex, Barry Sanders-caliber improvisation. Or just HerbieH, a one-of-a-kind. 🇺🇸
