Why are there Christians in India?

- India is often thought of as a predominantly Hindu country. When the British Raj gained its independence in 1947, it was divided into two countries: majority Muslim Pakistan, and majority Hindu India. However, India is not as religiously homogeneous as you might think. Centuries before Islam was first introduced to the subcontinent, Christianity had already established its presence. Today, India is the home of nearly 30 million Christians, forming a small but influential community in India. The fact that Christianity has continued to survive for so long in a country predominantly adhering to Hinduism sparks the question: Why are there Christians in India?

As a Christian from Kerala,i am refuting against your argument of Indian christinans following Karma principle, considering Ganga as holy river etc. These are essentially against the christian view and in my lifetime haven't seen any christian, major denomination ever accepting them as such.Any resemblance with the hindu religion, i feel are minorily in wedding ceremony, church architecture etc and majorly in festival celebration followed in some churches.
Yea I agree as well as a Christian from goa

@@AtharvPandey-kj1tq yes brother, you are one hundred percent right.
St.Thomas came to India after the death of Jesus Christ,so it is just after 33AD.

Bruh what nonsense are u spewing....no Christians in india belive in karma , re incarnation or power of ganges, we dont chant ohm...please dont talk about things u know nothing off without proper research 😂
Yeah real only culture is similar to hinduism
The Indian Hindus are OBLIGATED to defend Thomasine Christianity (which is as authentic as, if not MORE authentic than, even Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox, and even Oriental Orthodox) - indeed we boldly assert the Liturgy of St Addai and Mari and Qurbana and the anaphora and Peshitta from Church of Babylon/Church of the East are at least as old as the Church of Antioch! - In fact, my fellow Indian Hindu brothers and sisters are called upon to boldly defend the peaceful and blessed Thomasene/Nazarene Christianity at least as much as Sankara Advaita, or Vishsitadwaita, or Narayana/Krishna worship, or any other Bhakti school all of which developed in India during the 7th and 8th Centuries (almost 700 years after 52 AD when St Thomas preached and established his 7 (or 10) churches in Malabar/Muziris area (Kerala). And even a few hundred years after another Thomas (of Knanya) arrived in Kerala from Syria. - This is all simply undeniable FACT and HISTORY.
Established Hinduism that is Brahmanism came to Kerala only after 8th century. Vazhappalli inscription mentions the establishment of Shiva temple in Vazhappalli a Budhist Church (Palli in Malayalam means religious worship temples except Hindu temple) and renamed the Budhist temple to Thiruvattuvayi Shiva temple in 830 ce with the help of Chera king of kerala. His name in the Document is mentioned as "Raja Shekara Devar" using Grantha letters. His real name is still unknown maybe Chera Thevar or something. Knai thomman Document of 345 mentions Chera king Co Quarangon (French)
@@sankarie3687 cheras were Buddhists.
@@willisfernandes2366 They may have adopted Hinduism in 700AD. Since Vazhappalli (Thirivattuvayi) was a Buddhist temple.

I am ex-Hindu but converted to Christianity but I'm not from India. My family is part of the Indian diaspora from Trinidad.
Why 😮I was connected to your culture for so long then why did you leave it, maybe there will be no Hindu facilities there
@@Sahgajbkumar-x1k I left Hinduism because I saw Christianity as different from other religions. The God of Christianity wants relationship and already loves us but in other religions you need to do rituals and works to go to Heaven. Also Jesus died on the cross for our sins so we can make into Heaven. No amount of good works lets us into heaven because we all committed sin against God at one point. God's standard for us to enter heaven is perfection but no one achieved it, except for Jesus. Jesus was sent to pay for our sins since he was the perfect sacrifice and he is the Son of God. And all we need to do is believe in Jesus that he died for our sins and resurrected three days into Heaven defeating sin for us to enter Heaven.
@@charles.2001 You know one thing, after seeing your arguments I can confirm 100% that you have never read any book on Hinduism in your life, you only know the stories that you have heard. If you had read Bhagwat Geeta even once, you wouldn't have said such things
Do you know, all the old religions of the world have ended except Hinduism. Muslims ruled India for 1000 years and Christians for 200 years, yet Hindus were there, are there and will remain there. Because we believe in karma, there is no heaven or hell, you will get the result as per your deeds 🕉️ this is the beauty of Hinduism
II doubt that Christian's in India chant the om or have incorporated hindu concepts.... at least not main stream Christian's.
It's hard to generalize Christians in India because of how diverse the different Christian groups there are. However surveys conducted by the Pew Research Center have shone that Indian Christians often incorporate beliefs of Hinduism in their own faith. Thus, while certainly not all Indian Christians have incorporated chanting om, I am certain that there are communities were Christians do incorporate these Vedic traditions.
@@GeographyLore The thing is the moment Christian's adopt Hindu vedic systems, they no longer are Christians. Hinduism is the complete opposite of Christianity.
The Hindus who converted to Christianity may continue with idol worship, or keeping multiple gods in their house, but the church itself does not teach it. If they do they cannot be categorized as Christians.
I am christian by birth and there is no om chanti
@@GeographyLore in India traditional India who follows christ teaching are from kerala and goa
@Philip Mathew iIts not about feeling threatened, but following scriptures. We cannot knowingly eat food offered to idols. If we eat unknowingly, that's okay.
This is the primary reason in local language we address jesus as isho or yeshu as it is real name in Hebrew and aramaic and study says jesus is not real name isho is the most locally called name in Malayalam language..i believe it must have taught by st thomas otherwise nobody we will be able thinking to whwn everybody is calling jesus later by convertion in most countries

I was with you until you said we had beliefs like Karma, reincarnation and considering the ganga river holy. This isnt true for any Christians in India. There were certain oddities like wearing the brahmin sacred thread or being considered pollution neutralizers (upper caste) but there are no evidence for having explicit Hindu beliefs such as those u mentioned. You got some infos terribly wrong. Christians in India doesn’t believe in Karma, reincarnation or purifying power of Ganges river. But in forgiveness of sins, afterlife and power of the Holy spirit. Go get your facts correct before posting or don’t dare to do it at all.
I need some body to correct him when he said kerala
Some information are not correct. Christian’s in India are not following any Hindu believes. Christian’s never used ohm or any other ritual from Hinduism or any other religion. But we all have a common culture. Culture is not something related to religion.
Ur culture include only dress, food, language, the rest u people avoid like artforms such as music, literature, dance becoz all of them is covered in indian spirituality.
But when it comes to cultural elements like music, dance u'll look into western culture.
So it's not accurate that u follow indian culture as whole.
The Syrian Christians in India, the oldest christian community, has a lot of Hindu rituals and beliefs.
Also, the values we keep in our heart, the culture we follow, the dress we wear are all similar to Hindu traditions. We may be christians in belief but we are hindus by culture and tradition.
Some of them are :-
1) Lamps(nilavilakku) and short Umbrella( muthu kudagal) are used in temples as well as in syrian churches.
2) The procession around the temples and the churches are same.
3) The flag hoisting(Kodiyetam). Except the cross, the pillar for bearing the flag is exactly similar to the ones used in temples.
3) Using the black stone stand which is filled with oil and then lighted. Its the same in temples.
4) The bishops were called "Thirumeni" and his residence is called "Aramana". These words also refer to brahmins in temples and their palaces respectively.
5) Thali, the sacred thread used for marriage in church is also used in temples.
6) Manthrakodi, the saree is also taken from Hindu rituals.
7) Sinthooram, the red saffron powder on the forehead of bride, put by groom.
8) The tradition of lighting the lamp before any occasion because we share the common belief as Hindus.
9) Before Synod of Diamper(portugese trying to conquer us), Syrian christians used to check astrology for fixing dates for occasions.
10) Vidyarambham ritual of blessing the child by making him write the first letter in malayalam or Isho(jesus) in malayalam. The same is done in temples too.
11) Thulabharam, gifting the church anything that upto a quantity such that its weight is equal to yours.
12) Ezhunnullath, Procession with Photos over elephant is a imitation of ezhunnallathu in hindu festival in temple.
13) Chorut - In the sixth month, the infants are given rice for first time in temple . Similarly, christians have this in church done by priest.
14) Using chenda, mrithangam, Kombu and etc..., though it is considered as Kerala tradition, not as Hindu, I'm still mentioning it.
There are more and more....
@@rossilydevassykutty9996those can be called indian culture rather than religion, even buddhists do the same.
