I used to hang out at the goodwill clearance store around 1999 to 2002. They used to take out computer towers for 8.99. Before they got greedy and opened their computer stores and tagged everything . I found a slot a athlon 900mhz tower with 20 and 10gb harddrive with burner for 8.99 in 2001.

I still own my old similar builld. Chipset is VIA, but i paid extra to have RAM compatible with Virtual Chanelling technology (an unknown thing which was available at the end of SD RAM era). To boost the performance I used 3 512mb sticks, while i had 256-512mb RAMdrive with pagefile on it.
Depending on AGP port Compatibility you can pair it with ATI x850xt. It will be compatible wih Windows 98SE, but having enough power to play games which were made in 2006 such as Prey or Oblivion, and the whole system was ahead in terms of performance compared to any Pentium 4. With windows 2000 you can use even AMD HD 3870 as there were few models still with AGP.

But me, being a cheap ass take my flat ones, separate the ribbon cable into 8, 10 (or 5 for 40 conductor cables) wire strips and stack those strips, bind them with electrical tape, and basically make a cheap round (more like square-ish) cable that is far more cable management friendly.

It would be nice, I tested the same OS with two 1.4GHZ PII-S (board was a Tyan S2507T), it was really fast but more oriented to be a retro workstation. Also I did try to browse on the internet with it. It was clearly better than a similar cpu on a single socket board but I didn't found a big interest in building an entire machine around it so it's now in an antistatic bag and well protected to be kept for a long time, retro history :)

Doom 3, Most Wanted, FEAR, Resident Evil 4, The Chronicles of Riddick.

    • @Zankuho

Resident Evil 4 -

Computers at that time were sold with roughly 128mb of 100 mhz ram and Windows 2000 pro was rarely seen outside of pro users. Windows 'M.E' was the O.S you'd get with a consumer computer in 2000 and i recall getting hold of 2000 and it just blowing away 98 and M.E. Unlike 'N.T 4.0' it could play games. If N.T 4.0 could of played games, i'd of gotten that lol! Anything to avoid 98 or M.E.

Nice rig :) I had nearly the same parts (PIII-S 1.4, Asus TUSL2-C, 512MB ram, SB Live, Geforce3 ti 500 but with 128MB of vram) one a year ago for one of my Win98SE rigs but I dismantled it to have something less modern and more "year 1999": Abit BE6-II, PIII 800MHz fsb 133 256MB of ram, Geforce256 DDR, a pair of Voodoo 2 (I don't have a V3 PCI) SB Live too, really nice for later DOS games and exceptional for Win9X era games. The most modern game I tried for fun was TES III Morrowind and it played like... crap (~15-20 fps outside) at 800x600... but it played ! :p

@@karel88l That's not true. This computer was higher midrange, as it is late 2001 build, and Pentium 3 Coppermine/ Tualatin was moved into midrange, while Pentium 4 Willamete/ Northwood was moved to highend. But Tualatin 1.4 Ghz, particulary after overclock, was completly enough even next year, and completly enough for any graphic card, even from next series.
I remember it, because in august 2002, I've bought Thunderbird 1.33 Ghz, and this Pentium 1.4 Ghz is basicaly about the same speed. And it was enough like up to 2004, so 2 years. In no way would call it Scrap. Maybe it was average after a year. But not Scrap.
And Geforce 3 Ti? Dude, this card was better, than Geforce 4 MX440, which most people bought in mid 2002, as mid range card. Up to late 2004, it was enough. Famous combo from end of 2004, killed these cards, Doom3, Farcry, Half-life 2. But still, at the end of 2002, Tualatin slightly overclocked to 1.5 Ghz, with Geforce 3 Ti, was completly decent computer. After another year, in end of 2003, it started to age, for sure, but still capable as midrange. So, it holded about 3 years. Then particulary that Geforce 3 Ti started to be too slow. For Doom3, and similiar games, heavy pixel shader series cards was needed, that meant simply at least Geforce 6600/6600 GT. Even FX5900 started to fall in these games, barely catching 6600 Vanilla. So it holded Late2001 - Late2004, almost 3 years, before turning into scrap. After changing graphic card to 6600GT, and overclock Tualatin a little bit, it could still hold as midrange during 2005. Then CPU/memory became really bottleneck, and this platform could be called scrap. So no... it was not scrap after year. With little upgrade to midrange 6600GT, you could go with it 3.5 years. :)
