    ADM has been good but I can’t help but remember him losing in straights to an unseeded Berrettini last year. I still think Hurkacz has the slight edge.
    I generally agree that physicality shouldn’t be a big issue on grass but the fact remains that Djokovic is 37, coming from an injury, and having one of his worst seasons. I think Sinner is the one to beat and he’s my pick to win Wimbledon

      There’s an emerging crop of decent grass court contenders on paper, led by Hurkacz, Demon, Struff, Draper, FAA, Shapo, but then they’ve all had incredibly disappointing losses that make Wimbledon impossible to predict. Hurkacz’s ADF loss in 2022, FAA’s Cressy loss in 2022, Struff is the poster child of playing great all grass season then losing early at Wimbledon, etc.
      Berrettini isn’t necessarily a bad loss, but you’d expect a grass court true contender to beat him when he was coming off injuries and played a total of one tuneup match (1-6 2-6 loss to Sonego in which he was clearly injured) that season.
      Agreed though; I’d lean Sinner to win Wimbledon right now. His movement looks godly, mixed with all of the other things he does well. I wouldn’t be surprised if Novak is there to meet him in the final, but I’d be surprised if Djokovic could pull the win here. Also think Hurkacz is a big threat to Novak if he can get that far (even though Djokovic on paper matches up well with him), and Rune will be difficult if he’s in-form. He gave a great fight to Zverev at RG as well, so we know Rune tends to show up at a decent level for the big tournaments.

      The big thing though is that I can totally see Novak in the final, but can i see him beating Sinner? No. Maybe Alcaraz if he dominates serve and return and Alcaraz has a nervous start, but Sinner is arguably a better server right now, on the same level in returning, a better mover, and brings crazy baseline power. I think he’s been pretty reasonable about picking Djokovic at tournaments where he’s historically done very well, but at the end of the day, Djokovic hasn’t done much of anything this season relative to his expectations, and so it would’ve been reasonable to go with Sinner or Alcaraz instead for Wimbledon.

    I do think there are reasonable criticisms of Medvedev’s chances on grass this year, even if some fans are definitely taking it too far. And I also think it’s fair to say Hurkacz is a bigger contender than him (I’ll get to that later):
    1. Across the board, Medvedev’s service stats have taken a dip. This is a huge issue with his game in general right now because his serve is one of his primary sources of offense, but on grass it’s even more dire due to the surface being very serve reliant. In fact, it’s a miracle he’s won so many matches with a lower hold and break rate than previous years; he’s accomplished this through very clutch play as shown by his 81% tiebreak win percentage this year, which is staggering. Props to him for pulling this off, but is it sustainable?
    2. His grass results are dubious. I can’t really think of a single big, top player he’s upset on grass or even really gave a good fight to. His SF run last year was his only great run at Wimbledon, but it was with a very soft draw and Alcaraz killed him in the SF.
    As for why Hurkacz may be a better contender:
    1. Hurkacz has been a pretty consistent threat to the elite on grass with some notable big wins and close losses to top players. Every top player knows they’re in for a fight against him. On the other hand, Medvedev has a lot of scar tissue against Alcaraz/Sinner, and maybe some lasting scar tissue vs Novak even though that matchup hasn’t happened much recently. If Hurkacz makes the Wimbledon SF or F, you expect him to be more threatening to a top player.
    2. Hurkacz’s game is great for grass in many ways with that huge serve, great hands, and if his forehand is on he pretty much can beat anyone.
    As for the case for Medvedev over Hurkacz:
    1. Medvedev is a more stable best of 5 player throughout his career than Hurkacz.
    2. Hurkacz has a lot of “tiebreak variance,” in that he goes to tiebreaks with everyone whether they’re ranked #79 or #2 in the world, and that leads to some losses to lesser players due to the nature of his play style of playing the tight margins.

    I'm only focusing on the possible and probable semi-final between Sinner and Alcaraz.
    Alcaraz and Sinner in their differences are two undisputed talents, their matches are always unpredictable, it is no coincidence that over time their H2H has always fluctuated with the maximum advantage of one, in turns of one or the other, and with always consecutive series of two victories.
    The last two were by Alcaraz and they had several things in common, the slow surface (Indian Wells is the slowest hard court on the tour, let's not talk about the RG clay) in which Alcaraz raised and slowed down the trajectories with greater spin alternating them with fast shots, responding from further away, surfaces where Alcaraz had time to prepare his shots, unlike the fast surfaces where Sinner's aggression and power took away time for his game.
    Both matches then had the same pattern, a first set clearly won by Sinner which was then followed by Alcaraz's comeback, it must also be said that, in addition to Alcaraz's change in tactics, in both there was a Sinner's physical decline, which shouldn't happen this time at Wimbledon.
    So I believe that if they both reach the semi-finals, Jannik will win this time.

    If the winner from the top half get through in a 3-seter then I do think the winner will have an advantage in the final. We will wait and see, will be an interesting couple of weeks.

    Predicted Alcaraz would lose USO, AO, thought he was a good bet for French, but now feel like he has a good draw, but has some form and other issues, and hasn't been serving the best which you need on grass.
    Hurkacz dark horse, thought he had a great shot, but might run into Novak again, who he has I believe lost always to, while has some wins with the other favorites.

    Thank you for the analysis, I agree with the predictions. Novak is just looking stronger and stronger by the day.
    Regarding Meddy, he’s been struggling with a serious shoulder injury therefore his serve has gone down. BUT in a way that makes his achievements this year even more amazing. He’s been incredibly clutch. At the same time his serve has dipped, I think it is actually promising that he is experimenting with his game as well, adding some more agression which may or may not always work. Trying to change return position, drop shots, etc which might also be the reason he’s been looking shaky at times.

If the knee really is incredibly healing - just incredible - I will take Yannik over Carlos in 4 & Novak over Sasha in 4 - then Nole over Yannik in 4. Think the Djoker’s Serve/Volley power placement & precision will carry the day if the mental focus is @ that Super-Djoker level. Thanx Gill. Cheers, Milan.

    Great preview! Great that you made the case for Meddy: needs more love for what he has done in fast conditions and at slams for that matter.
    One thing I slightly disagree on is the Alcaraz-Sinner forehand to forehand dynamic on grass. It might for all I know favor Alcaraz just as well as Sinner. Remember what Djokovic last year and others on numerous occasions in faster courts have done to Sinner. They’ve hit hard and central to his forehand. This tactic can despite his recent fast court dominance still work well against him, simply because he needs a little time to fire hard back and, also, because his technique does not to any degree lend itself to that Federeresque quasi-block forehand. He almost prefers to be pulled out wide than to counter a good-paced central ball. Last year, if my memory serves me right, Djokovic was not only able to draw errors from the Sinner forehand but weaker balls too. This is to say nothing more besides that it does not appear at all clear to me how the forehand to forehand dynamic will play out.
    Thx for great content.

    Good job, Gill. My only quibbles:
    * You rightly gave Medvedev attention for being overlooked, but you said nothing about his potential 3rd round match-up against Zhang, who just beat him on grass at Halle.
    * I think people are giving Djoker-your pick to win-too much of a lift from his grass court mystique, given his sub-par year this year (still hasn't made a tournament final), his recent knee surgery, and his loss to Alcaraz at Wimbledon last year.

  • @SJ-di5zu
    @SJ-di5zu 3 дні тому +1

    The Djokovic pick definitely caught me off guard but I understand it. However I do think it’s fair to say there are physical concerns as well as just concerns about his level that weren’t there in previous years. He was supposed to win AO this year since the conditions are perfect for him, yet he barely even put up a fight against Sinner. Indian Wells loss was ugly, clay season was ugly with a lot of physical issues.
    His draw is favorable and the desire is still there, so I think he makes a deep run. But I don’t think his level is high enough to beat Sinner or Alcaraz in the final, especially the former. It’s just so difficult to take that jump to beating the best of the best late in a slam. I really think Sinner’s level is gonna be staggering at Wimbledon. He’s set up well for a dangerous display at Wimbledon.

However, I think it was mostly good for the entertainment value considering that it is almost impossible to even come remotely close to getting even 45% of the matches right as previous experience has shown us time and time again. I was suprised that you picked Djokovic who is obviously already in decline. I am certainly ruling Djokovic out as well as Alcaraz who I do not believe can make the quick surface transition to win the double. This leaves the tournament wide open.

    Oh and then as for Zverev’s quarter:
    I looked at this and thought it was a great opportunity for Rublev to pull an SF appearance. Rublev is a pretty consistent performer at slams especially the last few years, and while he’s had some disappointing losses lately, he did win Madrid which is only his second M1000. Can’t be too low on his level, plus the Arnaldi loss wasn’t terrible. This seems like a draw Rublev can take advantage of and pull a QF appearance from considering he is good on grass. Plus I’m just not really seeing it with Musetti; I think he’s been very clutch this grass season but it seems like the textbook “great at tune-up events, upset early at Wimbledon” type of season for him. At the end of the day, he prefers slower surfaces.
    I don’t hate the Zverev pick. I think he can servebot his way through this soft draw, and he’s a very consistently good grand slam performer as well. Plus matches up very well with Rublev if they meet in the QF.

  • @user-wh9gu5xq6g
    @user-wh9gu5xq6g 3 дні тому +1

    I’m confused.. you have Korda as the upset alert but also that Musetti defeats him in R4? Because by your choice, Korda loses early and then who do you have? Tsitsipas? Against musetti.. match up wise you have to favor Tsitsipas there. If Musetti is the favorite to go through to the QF, realistically doesn’t make sense to have Korda as the upset. It seems you don’t want to put Rublev or Tsitsipas as the upset because you rate them below Korda despite both winning big titles this year and having better overall slam success.

    Novak would normally always be my favorite, but not a few weeks after a meniscus tear. He might be playing again now and able to move pain-free - that alone is already an incredible achievement. But multiple 4-5 set matches on (partially) slippery grass are something completely different than training for 1-2 hours. I just can't imagine Novak managing that. He was physically at 100% last year and didn't win. This year, it is completely impossible for him to be at 100%, and the young opponents are getting better and more experienced step by step and have now realized that Novak is beatable.

  • @andrewhimes1923
    @andrewhimes1923 День тому

    This is a fascinating draw this year with Sinner and the defending champion Alcaraz in the top half and the 7 time champion Djokovic in the bottom half
    On paper, I lean towards Sinner. I think he’s the obvious choice but there are questions.
    How is Novak physically? More importantly, how is Novak mentally?
    Novak still hasn’t answered the mental question and there is nothing to suggest he can raise his game to compete beyond the quarterfinals.
    So while Sinner has the power, length and movement to be a multiple champion at SW 19, Alcaraz beat arguably the greatest grass court player in history last year who was in form and was the 4 time defending champion.
    And there is lies the X factor with Carlos Alcaraz. This guy does not flinch. Period full stop.
    When the pressure is on no matter the opponent, the stage or the moment, he is able to raise his game and deliver.
    I lean towards Alcaraz but Sinner can absolutely take this title

    Djokovic winning another would would be insane; if Sinner and Alcaraz go on to have amazing careers but end up with negative h2h vs. Novak, and getting beaten in some key finals when they are in ther primes and he's 38, that would in a way cast a shadow on the quality of the next "era". I also think Djokovic already had to activate all reserves, play perfect tactics and percentage tennis to win basic matches this year, including RG, so I just can't imagine him making it to the final and then beating Sinner or Alcaraz who both now should truly have the belief that they can beat Novak. Anyway, I just got my new TV and will surely watch and enjoy his maybe last ride!

    - I dont agree that Alcaraz will lose to Sinner, as he will have the confidence and probably the crowd on his side as they are never against him AND he won here before against the great Djokovic in the final. Sinner's hip injury will probably flare up as he has such a physical game and will play many matches before he faces Alcaraz who has a lot more variety to his game. Sinner will not win in 3 and maybe he gets nervous and gets these cramps that he got at RG.
    - The problem for Sinner and Alcaraz is that they have to face each other first before they can even play the potential match against Djokovic, and from what I saw from RG Djokovic struggled very hard indeed to win his 2 last matches and it was a bit of a luck that he came through against these 2 much lower ranked players, and then he had the injury. He does not even have a great team around him and no coach, so he must be very hard to work with as we have heard and witnessed in matches of course.
    - He is 37 years, Alcaraz and Sinner is around 20 years, and the final will be physical my friend. Alcaraz will definitively feel he can beat him having done it before and be well aware that he comes from surgery and plays Wimbledon too soon after the surgery which probably will be a bit difficult, and I just do not thrust that he can pull it off this year having had so few matches and little success, and he is older and slower, so if Sinner or Alcaraz comes to the final, they have at least 50 % chance of taking the title and I imagine Sinner has more confidence this year and really wants to win in the final.
    - I fear Djokovic will cause himself another injury at Wimbledon as I imagine he will have to struggle very hard against Sinner or Alcaraz, but he has the advantage of having to play only one match against a top guy.
