- So TikTok is a pretty strange place, what do you think about the app? In this episode I review some of the climbing fails I posted there that they banned. I really can't figure out what is considered band worth and what is not...
Have anymore info on these fails, let us know below, see ya in the next one.

When instructing beginner climbers I always try and emphasize that climbing shirtless is more important than wearing a helmet.
First steps should always be: Ditch the shirt, put on a beanie so you don't get cold and then tape up some fingers. Doesn't matter if they're injured because a) it looks badass b) they should be injured anyway, you're a climber now
😂😂😂😂
@@nurzumspass 😂😂😂👍
God damn right
100%
That last clip... One of my climbing friends a few years ago had that happen as well. It was a low angle easy slab. Not knowing the full height, the friend lead up there belayed by his wife. I watched as he was lowering, probably around half way down, the end of the rope slipped through the belay device. Fortunately, he was able to catch himself and down climbed. We all always paid super close attention to tying stopper knots after that, even if we think the rope is more than long enough. That habit carried over to rappelling as well, even if it results in a bit more work, we just tie those knots without exception.
Steve Zissou vibes today. Love it!
That Potash Road lowering off the end of rope is crazy. The school room slabs are like 50ft high. Had to have been using a super small gym rope?!
Yeah, super short rope and didn't tie a stopper at the end. It's as much the climbers fault as the belayers.
I really love that song, you should make an extended version and put it on Spotify. I repeat the song part like five times. 😂
5:17 check out his baseball cap just effing flying of the end off the screen to the bottom left
Dude! Loving your videos! New to lead climbing. It would be great if you made an intro to lead belaying with tips and tricks on how to get better with multiple steps
Fun video Josh! What the hell is a tik tok? (jokes, don't actually answer that)
🙄Tick-tock is Trippin, that’s your whole channel. And you’re giving injury and life-saving advice! 🙃Thanks beta, i’m always down to learn the easy way😉
Petzle states in thier user manuals that " it's impossible to account for every situation a piece of equipment or climber might fail" well ladies and gentlemen, I don't think they met Joshua Perry. Amazing channel brother love the work you do for the climbing community
6:55 I don't get. A: It's a super short route. Who uses ropes this short?! B: Why wouldn't you know how long your rope and the route is?! C: End knot is mandatory if A and B are given. What a complete fail.
practicing fundamentals on a less serious route. Get all your beginner mistakes out of the way so you dont hurt yourself on a more serious route.
End knot is mandatory. Period.
@@chaosengine4597 definitely! it’s a pretty dumb thing to be lazy about
I don’t get it if I had a rope that short I would have a laser focus on how much rope was left. Also I would never have a rope that short😂
@@DJ-kg6zq usually only once...
6:18 I think the belayer is still holding the rope in the hand with which he is trying to protect himself from the leg kick, which is pretty cool if that's the case!
Stopper knots are so important, luckily he was 1meter above the ground, and not in some multi-pitch situation 50meters above ground.. :)
I never untie the braking end of the rope from my rope bag
That intro cracked me up lol
Can't stand when people do any sport or activity with someone inexperienced and get mad at them for not doing something correctly. As the experienced climber, it's your responsibility to put a stopper at the end of the rope. That's your fuckup, not the belayer
In Germany we teach that both partners are responsible for checking that there is a stopper knot as part of the partner check. The first thing you teach a newbie is how to do a proper partner check. Don't you learn it like that in the US?
"Man, I'm obnoxious." I'm dying here...LMAO.
The intro song reminds me the Adventure Time song. Love it! :D
Ouch! That headbang… :o everybody join the helmet gang!
p.s. Digging your moustache, Josh!
😅I think you’re funny! I appreciate that you’re not trying to be too cool to have fun. It would be nice if everyone didn’t take themselves so serious lol 😛
today is my birthday and ive been thinking about climbing fails with joshua perry and today this came out... ill take it as my birthday wish or smthng
I‘m for longer videos, there‘s more to those than these short ones. It always feels like it’s only a hunt for klicks rather than sth substantial. Ticktock may have it‘s own sense, but I don‘t find some value in it…
Where did you get the video of the giant rock falling in the intro? I would love to see the whole footage.
Climbing fails are like crack to me. I always want more.
😂😂 and everybody knows there’s no such thing as leftover crack
I’m going to find the camera you are watching me through. not sure how you have followed me everywhere I watch the channel, but I do appreciate the welcome back.
That last clip looks like Wall Street in Moab Ut.
I wish I never knew about joshes tic toks. Cringe. But I love his content on yt
😂😂😂
@@BetaClimbers you got the algo beta we don’t know about tho 👀
Thank god the guy who smacked his head was shirtless, otherwise he would not have survived that… jokes to the side, I still don’t get why you wouldn’t wear a helmet, although indoors I don’t do that either but outdoors I’m always protected by my good old friend.
only people with brain need to protect it, is what I'm always saying.
such a good song
75% of people I see climbing trad outside scare the shit out of me and REALLY need to at least try and learn some general sport climbing first.. With the popularity of the sport nowadays I see many people climbing trad with bad decision making and placements. It's not something you want to learn on your own when you just start climbing.
People use to start with trad all the time before sport climbing was invented. Some people just aren't interested in sport climbing and that's okay.
I don't think there's anything wrong with starting as a Trad climber as long as you're taught professionally or by someone who really knows what they're doing.
If only there were more sport crags
Ya, the problem is they learn from youtube and inexperienced friends with bad habits. A general knowledge of physics and common sense helps lol...
Big hugs from bohemian forest
I’m pretty sure it’s okay to not wear a helmet if you have a man bun. Skull saved.
A double overhand isn't very hard to tie compared to recovering from a "rappel off end of rope" situation.
Garenntee that core his holding her climbing back
He knows my name!
What the hell, how did he know that?…
😂
So what should have been done for belayer to avoid getting kicked? harder catch is my guess since it's so low?
Theoretically they could have seen where that the climber was in line with the last piece they placed and moved to a safer spot before the fall occurred.
The algorithm did its job and I got an ad for tiktok right after this.
I think tiktok is the dark side and UA-cam is the really dark grey side.
that last clip the climbers were using a rope the same length as a shoelace....they must have known when he tied in that the rope length was suspect.
That last clip is the Potash Rd outside of Moab Utah. What rope are they using? That climb is SO SHORT. Some good news......its pretty soft and sandy at the bottom in a lot of places. I'm guessing he was like....hey babe, you can totally do this. There's nothing to it. And she didn't want to, and then when he blamed her she was like "dude....I told you I didn't know what i was doing." As far as TikTok I don't know why they would ban those. doesn't make any sense to me.
Jesus, who coiled your ropes in the background ? :D
When exactly did that guy stand up?!
In the first clip I wonder if they were using a static rope?
or the rope anchored at the bottom? I was thinking that. Plus bad posture.
I think your first 2 pieces blowing on that small of a fall means you need to re-learn placing trad gear.
Being made of gumby material lmao. 😂
As a gumbe i noticed that the last one, it isn't a long rope and looks like it's too short even if she didn't drop the belt n shit on the deck he'd have been short roped.
Shirtless head banger shit happens that's why you wear protection .... and cloths.
I'm good josh, thanks
TikTok sucks for anyone who still has got an attention span exceeding 3 seconds.
I didn't read your comment past the first 4 words
True story… i banned tik tok
1st clip look like a static rope.
Noo, this is Patrick
favorite line: if you havent downloaded tiktok yet, you probably shouldnt.
Where can i send my video?
Instagram, discord, email. I make myself very accessible. 🤙🏻
The only people who don’t put knots in the ends of their rope are canyoners, and they know what they’re doing.
I'm John and I feel special!
Hello John!
Don't disgrace this channel with tiktok energies dudeeeeee
So tick tok is just Vine 2.0?
1:13 video starts
Learning from mistakes is good. Tik Tok leaves inappropriate videos with young kids dancing barely-dressed.
I feel seen
On the one where the rope runs through the belay device is the fault of whoever decided to lower off a 23m climb with a 45m rope. Really guys read the f**king guide book.
HEY HELMETS PEOPLE
tiktok youtube pipeline is not a thing, apparently tiktok doesnt show videos as often when people quit the app after watching it. some more educational stuff on tiktok would be nice though :)
#HelmetGang
I am older than 16 years. So no titok for me. Longer videos please.
How do you know I was watching?
You violated TikTok’s policies on contributing to the education of their cattle.
Yeah really poor gear placement on second video, always put an extra sling on your cams otherwise they WILL walk. Wth? Why were these banned? They are literally safety videos
How are they top roping with less than double length on the rope?
They must have started in different places. I can see running out on lead but not top rope!
Getting banned from TikTok is a badge of honor.
Where it proudly.
who tells you this was top-rope? He could have cleared the 1.5 pieces of gear on his way down.
@@chaosengine4597 What do you mean, "Who tells...?" The rope is going from the climber....to the top...and to the belayer. You don't need slide ruler here. Yes, maybe he was descending after leading and pulling gear but totally miscalculated the rope length. I do not know. Neither do you.
@@ananda_miaoyin you basically support my case. As you write, we don't know what they were doing. Therefore we cannot assume some weird toproping with a rope too short (I could think about reasons how such a case could happen, but it seems highly unlikely in that setup as you would need to lower your belay point after you have set up your top rope station).
@@chaosengine4597 Right. We don't know. Either way, shame on the belayer!
Short roping is scary at best. We got busted one time on a four pitch climb. We used my partner's 30M and I had to climb to the second piece just to get him to the next belay station!
@@ananda_miaoyin Shame on her _only_ if she was not completely new to the Job. It might as well be that her climbing partner just said something on the line of "don't be scared, it's easy and I will not fall anyway" and put the stuff into her hands.
how did you know i was watching?
Great videos. Please purchase a higher quality microphone your audio is mediocre.
🤙🏻
YT is much more useful for informative videos. TT is just sound bite attention grabbing BS 😁
Tic tok is the anti christ dude lol!
I started climbing in 1975 and climbed all over for over thirty years, including a long career as a guide. Using these videos to make money and "entertain" people, in my opinion, and it's just an opinion, is disgusting. You are exploiting the inabilities and misfortunes of others. Do they have your permission to use their images? Climbing has become a lot less classy and intelligent. This is also about how cool and knowledgeable you are...are you? People dressing up as climbers and posing in front of their gear to display the pain and misfortune of others to the cruel eyes of self-appointed experts and car crash gawkers? They should just turn off the camera and go climbing.
I appreciate the opinion. I started climbing in the early 90s when I was maybe 3ish. My father mentored me in the sport, before I can walk I was climbing. Before that I was in a haul bag being hauled up the cliff. Lol I became the youngest to climb El Cap in 2001. Then I became or rope access tech at an early age, now I own a rope access company. So I’m a little knowledgeable.
The laws of climbing are written in blood. Many climbers have dead by not obeying the rules. These videos are meant as a reality check to climbers or new climbers. The most dangerous mind set when climbing is complacency. So to be able to analyze the mistakes of others is a powerful tool as to not repeat the same mistakes. The clips are sent to me to be analyzed by the climbers and I receive many emails daily thanking me for helping them through these videos. Many people go out and buy helmets, bring extra safety gear or just practice rescue techniques now. I don’t enjoy watching anyone get hurt or make mistakes but I appreciate these climbers sending these clips to me so others can learn from them.
TikTok is for 15-yr-olds. YT or better yet, your own website with videos (much less traffic and profit, usually).
