What an amazing defense mechanism! “I am very high up hanging off a ledge, better just knock the brain out.”
Well it got him down didn't it?
Fake as fuck
Not a defense mechanism obviously (since those are meant to keep you alive). More like stress/trauma overload resulting in vasovagal syncope.
First lead climb I did I had such bad sewing machine leg that I got nicknamed Elvis.
Hey BetaMan! at 7:02 his piece actually popped!. I think you missed the cam he placed 20 centimeters to the right from his right foot. Awesome video
Yep, one piece popped right by his foot. Thankfully the next one held or he would have decked.
they who never WHIMPed, throw the first piece of gear.
Lol thats a good one
6:30 ish, he has a piece just above the little ridge his right foot is on but it pops right out. Scary fall!
Good eye thanks! Yeah that was scary close. Could have used a few more pieces for sure
@@BetaClimbers it's a double fail with that piece, he didn't extend it properly and the rope is rubbing on the ridge !
@@MartyCoony Yeah, looks like it's moving around a lot before he even falls on it
The intro has been around awhile, but I still absolutely freaking love it 😂
The clip at 8:28 is Sonic Youth in Colorado. It's an overhung route right next to a river, so lowering off the anchor drops you right into the middle of the water
Mad episode. Climbing fails is my favourite series of the ones that you do.
You just kept replaying that tendon pop... never stopped cringing 😖
Best climbing show out there.
Ouch to the last guy
That was the most brutal pop I have ever seen!
These gear pops aren't THAT bad.
*Hears the pop*
AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!
The jingle gets me every time! 😍👍🏻
Right on. I am in love with her voice too. Hugs
Gut wrenching to hear that dudes pulleys pop, maybe cause he tried to dyno off a full crimp, NEVER FULL CRIMP!
Full Crimp is fine if you do it right
Never, never full crimp ;)
The amount of force through his pulley dynoing off of the full or closed crimp is likely less than the force which would’ve been through should he have stuck the next hold reasonably open handed. This is unlikely to be an acute injury.
A full and closed crimp is fine and often essential, but needs to be trained and employed appropriately.
@@Route_2_V11 need more proof?
ua-cam.com/video/-vfIAJbgwgQ/v-deo.html
Full crimping is safe when done correctly. Use full crimp, just know what you’re doing.
What clip is that
7 minutes there was a piece on the sandstone ledge he was standing on, it popped, the next one was the slightly more visible one that caught him right before impacting the ground.
That Pulley Pop is a horrific sound
Funny story, I hiked the Grand Canyon. Zero issues going down but developed vertigo on a day hike on the second day. The hike out of there was torture. My body kept wanting to stop. Hands and feet were totally soaked in sweat. I was able to overcome it but at certain points I was worried I was going to get stuck on the trail. I had never had this issue on any other trails I have hiked. Very weird.
The sewing machine leg is not always connected to the hysteria ;) I sometimes have it due to some muscle thing... While belaying in a group of three (obviously securely tied into the anchor wit my daisy chain), my left leg started to have weird spasms. Probably I have just been tiring out some of the deeper muscles around the knee. Interestingly enough, the third person in the group with medical training, just pushed some pressure point and stopped that leg being a sewing machine. Anatomy is a weird and interesting thing...
Yeah that’s true it can just be muscle fatigue as well 🤙🏻
I get the sewing machine leg from caffeine before climbing and sometimes its pretty bad and sometimes not.
Great content as always. A great mix of humor and teaching. You have such a wealth of knowledge and experience.
I climbed on conglomerate for the first time recently and have never had sewing machine leg so bad, I spent a ridiculous amount of time route searching in that maze of pebbles lol
You're videos are getting better. Keep up the hard work and it will pay off!
That merch looks sick!
3:50 you can't flash a route on your second attempt xd
So hype you're back 🙌🙌🙌🔥🔥🔥
Thank you, man! 👍
The guy in the crocs passing out was one of the more foreseeable developments one could expect from this video...
And here I was thinking I was about to learn more about Weakly Interacting Massive Particles
I’ve had shakes a few times but 9/10 times I reposition which ever limb is shaking to release pressure off the nerve and then I’m able to stop the shake. Most times it’s because I’m on my toe with my foot at a certain angle.
Welcom back :)
The climber at 6:50 had a peice to the right of their foot, which did pop. So they were not running it out, just had a bad placement or the stone gave way.
I had the same during a hike on the snow
Watching this after I safely completed a very nice Via Ferrata in Switzerland 🧗🏻♂️
My hands started hurting I knew I was pushing my self to hard. On a week break.
The guy at 6:40 DID have a piece of gear pop out. It was right beneath him on the flat ledge he was right above. I have had errors like this happen with flat edges, as I think it can be hard to really test where the force of impact is.
I didn't know about pulley injuries. Good to know how to avoid them. Just read about it.
Sound advice 🤣
they are scary. better not read, don't know about, can never happen ;)
Oh man, feels like its been ages since the last climbing fail video, nice to see a new one!
Opinion: the climber at 7:14 did a poor job falling by pushing off the wall so much. She still would've slammed the wall even with less slack (although the slack wasn't good).
Looks like she's falling on purpose, doesn't it? She jumps off, does this weird contortion at the end and then she's smiling... Maybe training the fear of falling?
Nice climbing shoes @ 4:20 😂
Do a collab with hoopers beta! I bet he would have some good comments on some fails like that last one
I’ve had that sewing machine leg a few times. I think it’s partly physiological. If you weight that shaky leg it will usually stop.
Yeah it could also be from muscle fatigue as well I think. Would be interesting to find the science behind it actually.
"Yeah, okay. You might feel cool, but to everyone else, you look kinda silly."
I dunno man that was pretty slick 🤷♂️ haha
Depends if he had a back up lol 😂
4:10 No chance dude actually passed out. I was a paramedic for years, and that is not what a limp body looks like.
As he falls you can see his lead lift up slightly. Fake
Man the intro is Legendary
The song cracks me up every time.
Pulley strains and ruptures can just happen. Pro climbers get them, experienced amateurs get them; I've gotten two injuries in my hands/fingers (one pulley strain, one lumbrical muscle strain) and both times have been climbing below my limit after years of conditioning on harder climbing. The pulley injury I didn't even notice until a rest day when I started experiencing pain. Of course you can do exercises for injury prevention (and I had done) and climbing with technique that reduces risk, but bodies rebel sometimes.
I’m pretty sure this happens when there is too much force on your fingers when crimping. Very common injury with climbing unfortunately. Resistance training of the forearms may help, but those tendons can be very sensitive lol.
Yeah at 6:56 you can see a piece that did pop but it's right by his right foot so he didn't run it out.
ha, I predicted a "pop" on your way out, I deserve a prize. ;)
That pulley popping was awful. This is why, and why i tell my friends to go gradually. Do all of the routes of a grade, or at least a good many before moving on. I would do all v1s before attempting v2, 2s before 3s, and so on. Ouch.
@4:34 those are some amazing climbing shoes, need to get me some
Josh there is a piece that pops on that sandstone.
I had a double pulley (partial) rupture on my pinky. My hand dry fired, but my pinky stayed on. Heard the pop and immediately came down. 6 months out, no climbing...it sucked
100% best intro song ever
I didn't know you could scorpion like that climbing..
The back-bending whipper looks heinous. Doesn’t look like the rope stretches at all once it catches. Could they have been using a static rope??
My friends call it Elvis leg.
Oooooooo man, that finger popping 😅 made my skin crawl 😖
“On his *next* attempt he *flashes* it”
Said no one ever 😉
4:04 Climbing with Crocs (or cheap versions of Crocs) seems like a bad idea that can give you W.H.I.M.P.
Crocs on the climb @4:29, hahahaha...
The shakyness doesnt need to be Psychological. I can get weird shaky legs in unfavorable positions. Super annoying
Thanks for this awesome episode !
@ 7:07 there absolutely! 100% popped a piece. he wasnt far out at all.
Thanks for more great content.
Best cure to whimp is a big whipper
awesome video!
6:44 the top piece by his foot popped... took me forever to see it.
Popped my A2 pulley on a mono pocket, and yeah it makes that sound :(
2:08 i just think his muscle woke up wierd that day
At 7:11 the dude didn’t run it out, barely above the piece , looked to be places on the horizontal crack. The piece did blow though
damn that opening song
5:13 this is camp5 1utama Kuala Lumpur. Nice gym this is also the pro wall.
Doesn't a piece of gear pop on the ledge in the sandstone clip?
yes the piece by his right foot
7:00 it actually does look like there is a piece near the ledge that pops though? at least on my half screen potato here
Yeah I did miss that good eye lol luckily the next one held
for me, the "sowing machine leg" happens when I'm really pumped or a load of adrenaline has hit me
Indeed, number 2 to me looks like the guy overexerted himself. I had virtually the same leg response when I was cycling last weekend and completed a hard section of road, so it certainly wasn’t because I was scared of being too high ;)
I like to call it " Elvis Leg"
Love the intro song 🤩
The guy on the sandstone had a piece right by his feet that popped
Me and my mates call a shaking leg elvis feet
"This is what happens when you take someone that's new to climbing, and you put them up multiple pitches"
Dude, I thought you were supposed to be one of the good guys 😂😂😂
Lol the definition of being in a “over your head” situation 😂
OH MY GOD HER NECK
When I was in jusha tree i led a nice 5.7 Mike’s books . 30 feet up got a crappy placement in the crack 3 feet up it drops out my partner did not have the hart to tell me till we were up to the top 😂😂
That was Wall Street Moab I let the one next to that 👍
(Led)
Great Episode!
I'm very guilty of being a grit WHIMP.
FYI, Pop sound vid, he dislocated his wrist when he pulled to reach up.
how i missed this.. i was just like: hey where's perry
Good job man
The clip at 4:10 is a joke made by bobreesecookiemonster and in Ninja boy, it's just acting
I’m the first guy except I never would have gone that far to begin with
That first case of w.h.i.m.p where is that i have seen that place in another video it looks crazy....anyone know where it is?
Hey was that pockets or resistance at the New???
When I was at Uni there was a friend of a friend who fell off while climbing and left his thumb behind on the rock face. That's what they told me anyway. (He had no thumb). Super urgh!
6:50 Looks like he had a piece right under his feet that did pop.
7:09 the guy wasn't running it out. He had piece just under his knee, which popped
You should make a W.H.I.M.P. sticker.
7:02, no his piece popped like a foot or two to the right of his foot.
I'm not ashamed to say it's happened to me. Sometimes fear and knowing when to turn back and save your life.
Right on!
Ha, @4:00 this is totally them just joking around. Bob Reese and JB, both freerunning athletes.
"on his next attempt he flashed it" 🤨
I get whimp all the time when I’m doing scrambles haha but never happens on a rope
Used to get it before rappells haha
Put some Elvis on when you see someone shaking calves
Cool gear wall behind you
Thanks 🤙🏻
da sooner da beta
Nice
We call that an Elvis. 1:50
