  • Finally finished my review of the X100 Pro, and while this is an amazing device overall, it's just not the one for me (thanks in part to Vivo's sad response to issues).
Leave a comment below letting me know, am I too petty? Do you like the X100 Pro? Do you think Xiaomi is better? Thanks for watching!

    Cons:
#1. Design is not ergonomic to hold
#2. Front and back glass protection is very weak, even you drop from 3-4 feet , its gone
#3. Even battery is 5400mAh, it run almost a day, expecting more (even I am not gamer)
#4. Funtouch OS is not mature or polished OS yet. Few basic functionality still missing
#5. Video quality is like 30-40k phone even at 4k.

Another thing I didn't mention in the video, is that sometimes 100mm is weird for me. It's either too close or not enough reach. I like that the Xiaomi has 75 and 120. It matches a little better how I tend to shoot with real glass

Absolutely love your review. No pandering, no nonsense just giving honest thoughts and clarifying about the reasoning behind them, which is justified.
    A few points :
1.) The display, I might be wrong but afaik, (I got this from GSMarena), Sony's 4k screen is 4k only during photo viewing or watching videos. When texting, scrolling, etc. The screen is actually in FHD+ mode. So even though there are more pixels, the software is displaying an FHD+ output.
2.) Gaming, well, I've gotta say, you play more games/ a more diverse range of games than 90% of mobile phone reviewers who just spam benchmarks. I respect you for that.
3.) Battery and charging. I COMPLETELY agree with the charging, everyone has THE CHOICE to go slower when there's fast charging but can't go fast if the phone has slow charging. Like why NOT have the choice? I agree on that but the battery? Woahhh something's definitely up because in every test I've seen the Vivo is CONSISTENTLY at the very least on par with other flagships. Would love to see more clarification on what your use case is like, like use cases determine the battery for the most part. So someone using insta on iPhone would see a different battery usage compared to someone on android because it's so poorly optimized for example.
4.) Variable aperture, this is where I have a problem. I mean it's not the phone's fault yk? Like, the phone was made with the sole purpose being the fact that it has to have everything on it, and that's what I like, for example unlike Google, Vivo doesn't rely on AI or processing to fix EVERYTHING, they use hardware to get as far as possible so you get as much as possible while you shoot and that's the type of thing I like. Like, there's no online AI service, AI stuff is completely on device.
Anyways sorry for the weird tangent but the main point is that the first priority is to make the phone as good as possible by itself. And android manufacturers have historically been far behind Apple in terms of third party support. Vivo is backwards yes but their support team is incompetent about this just like most companies. It's third party, so it's understandable why they said what they did. I'm not saying they're great but they're not horrible either. They just didn't want to waste time and money on third party stuff I mean honestly you're the first reviewer I saw who uses these so yeah it's rare. The reason why I support them is because of the price, it's not as expensive as Xiaomi, Samsung or Sony's top flagships. In my country the X100 Pro is as expensive as the S24+. And at that point, how can I complain about something so minor, yk? Like, variable aperture is something I TRULY wish they had but this is their MIDDLE flagship, like the iPhone 15 Pro is to the 15 Pro Max, so some features are cut/ not the cutting edge and YET the X100 Pro is probably in the top 3 of cameraphones. Them not including variable aperture is justified for me at this price.
If the X100 Ultra doesn't have it then by all means criticize them and you SHOULD criticize them for what they don't provide but I hope you understand the reasoning behind their actions.
Also, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, at least in the global model, has 300 mah less battery and is notoriously poor in terms of battery life so I'm curious as to see how you feel about it lol, their charging is fast and their speakers are the best on a non-gaming phone for me so there's that. And for the price, it HAS variable aperture so that's great. What I'm curious to see are the portrait mode shots of human subjects, everywhere I see samples of it I'm disappointed, would love to see someone of your caliber take those shots.
Finally, I wish you made more reviews man. Love your videos, honest, in-depth and fun to watch. Especially your photography, my goodness is it good. Like it's just fun to look at the photos you take, regardless of phones. I'm done with big youtubers, all talk and no soul/skill. UA-camrs like you are the heart of this platform, you have the skills and are real enough to post your thoughts about the phone even if you don't like it/don't wanna use it. I respect that a lot. If you had the budget of big youtubers and the time to take shots with a lot more phones trust me man, you'd have been the next gold standard for phone photography on youtube.
Anyways, sorry for the long essay lol, hope you have a nice day man!

    • @ShibiChan
      @ShibiChan  27 днів тому +1

Thanks so much for the comment! I don't mind long write ups at all, I appreciate the more in-depth conversation.
I agree with basically all of your points, especially the choice to charge quickly. You're also correct about the Xperia 1V screen. It rarely if ever actually renders content at the full resolution. Even still, text appears super crisp. Likely moreso the combo of smaller overall screen with more pixels and less the rendering part. Just as an aside, I don't actually care for the 4k screen and look forward to it being changed to something more practical.
As for the lack of variable aperture, I do get where you're coming from. It's easy for me to forget this isn't the absolute top of this device line, because it already is so good. And like you said, it tends to be cheaper than a lot of the competition. I'll definitely keep an eye on the ultra release for Vivo.
I also agree about their support and devs. I responded in the video probably a little more emotionally than I should have, since I felt like paying over 1000 for a device should mean you're at least getting some sort of quality in terms of communication. Vivo also is far from the only one with this problem, like you mentioned as well. Sony is HORRIBLE in terms of it also. Which is really the only reason I'm switching to Xiaomi. Super niche, but important to me and maybe one viewer of the video lol.
I appreciate the compliment a lot. I've been making less videos lately just because life is hectic and creating and editing is basically a job in itself, on top of the chaos of work and life in a different country. My ultimate goal is to be able to review important devices moreso through the eyes of someone focused on photo and video, and less so on the usual kind of tech atmosphere on the platform. So given the opportunity, I'll likely try and travel to a new location of Japan for each review, giving some history on the location and showing it off while going over each device. So until then, when companies are cool with sending me review devices, I'll just keep doing the sporadic kind of content I'm doing now, and hopefully the channel will keep growing at a decent enough rate.
Thanks again for the comment and for watching and engaging so much!

@@ShibiChan omg I thought I had sent the reply but it got removed by youtube or something ig
Oh my, the screen still being sharp mayyybe has to do with the fact that even though the internal resolution is low, the screen itself is 4k. I can't think of any other reasons lol.
Btw what are your thoughts on the aspect ratio of a phone? I think 20:9 is the perfect spot for phones. I tried the Oneplus 8 which a cousin of mine owned and it was utter perfection in terms of design for me, I prefer centered cameras as they looks more "different", cus it's not like Apple and it also feels comfortable to hold as your fingers aren't touching the cameras all the time from the side but you instead rest your fingers.
Yeah I mean even the Xperia hasn't had variable aperture and omg if you get the Vivo Ultra that'd be bonkersss, like your photography skills along with the phone's imaging prowess mmmmm, best crossover since Endgame lmao
Yess communication with consumers is a huge problem for nearly all manufacturers unfortunately unless you're someone super small and niche like Nothing, or something. And yeah your reasoning for switching is completely justified but if you have a problem with Xiaomi I doubt you're gonna have a better experience than you've had before lol
Wow your aims are quite ambitious! Your channel is one of the most underrated ones on youtube and I'd say it's because you're niche. I wish you had more people watching your stuff but that'd just mean you'd have to make stuff for mainstream audiences and you'd have lost your charm. If you're ever in doubt dw my friend I'll try my best to keep supporting you throughout your videos.
I hope you don't burn yourself out or anything, just keep trying to upload or something if you feel like it and if you don't, it's fine because you at least tried :D. Make sure to take care of yourself my friend, you looked kind of exhausted in this vid, you doin ok now? Best of luck with your channel btw!
I have a final question, do you think the Xperia 1 V is worth the price in this landscape? Like as you said, the X100 Pro itself is so good you forgot it wasn't a top tier flagship. Yet the Xperia 1 V has camera sensors that are similar in size to those in the Oneplus 12. I was thinking of getting a Sony phone at one point but I was hesitant because of their lackluster processing which just feels like I can get by using the Pro Mode in other phones and their mediocre sensor size. Only the 1 II was good for me and if it had an efficient chip/one that didn't overheat in the phone and if it had the 5k mah battery I'd have gotten it. The same goes for the 5 V, it's way too overpriced for me, like I know RAM isn't all that important after 8 gigs but still, 1000 euros for an 8/128 gb phone is absurd to me, especially considering it has no telephoto cams. I think you would understand as well that a telephoto camera is just simply amazing the way it captures photos in a different angle.
Like, Sony themselves make the 1 inch sensors and the LYT-900 sensors, why don't they use it on their phones? I had an argument with someone online and call me petty but I think for the amount of money someone pays for these phones, they should only get the best that the brand has to offer. Like why should this even be a debate? It's weird, like making the best engine for a motorcycle and then not using it in your own but pricing your bike like a superbike. The 1 VI seems to be a not so major uplift over the 1 V and that just saddens me, these phones would do great with a 1 inch sensor with variable aperture and 1/2 inch+ sensors for the UW cam and the telephoto. That'd make the 1 VI super competitive I think. Then for the 5 VI they could add a 1/2" telephoto that's 2-3x and a 1/2" UW cam, that'd be brilliant. That way Sony's minimalist processing would still look good as the sensors don't require as much processing.
And another argument some people make is that Sony doesn't want a huge camera bump on their phones. What's wrong with that though? As demonstrated by Apple, Google, Xiaomi, Vivo and others, people are willing to live with larger camera bumps if they get the proper quality. The iPhone 13 Pro and even the 11 Pro's camera bumps were considered a bit comical by some people. I feel like if someone wants the best they have to sacrifice some ergonomics. Sony could make the 5 VI as thin as the 1 V with the changes I mentioned most likely and that phone could be the option for people who want thin devices. Idk, it feels like a weird thing to hear nowadays, considering we're long past the thing phone days of the S6 and the iPhone 6s or something.
Yeah anyways thanks for reading and replying my friend and have a nice day!

@@kaiserfakinaway5909 As mediocre as I think the 1V cameras are (considering the price of the device), I still think it's the best Xperia yet by far. I said since the Pro-I came out, if they made a version 2 that ironed out all of the problems of that generation, I'd love it. A current gen Pro-I with their newest tech, glass elements, etc, it'd be amazing.
It's Sony themselves that are chasing the thinness. And you're completely right, you can't have the best cameras while also having the thinnest phone, you have to choose. So my biggest issue is that Sony likes to market themselves as a phone for photographers, but they don't prioritize the right things. If they said something like "the world's thinnest flagship with a unique shooting experience" or something like that, fine, whatever. But don't tell me you've made a phone for photography then spit in my face while your competitors better utilize your own tech. Rant over lol.
I'm interested to try the 1VI in hand when it releases. From rumors alone, I doubt I'll want to get it.
I'm also not expecting Xiaomi to be any better in terms of support. But, I do know third party app compatibility and general hackability is better, which is what I'm looking for more and more lately. I also like how all rear cameras use large and matching sensors, and I also want to try the photography kit. Still chasing that "real" camera experience in a phone lol.
As for me, working in Japan just sucks lmao. It's as bad as you've probably ever heard it is. So, taking some steps to try and make things better. Anyway, feel free to join the discord if you want. It's not large, but it's easier to answer questions in bursts than in longer form here.
      Thanks as well!

It's part of the hardware, but requires software as well. Vivo doesn't make this software portion actively available for devs. Which means they can't integrate it into apps.
Vivo isn't the only manufacturer to do this by the way. Sony, for example, does the same with Xperia.
It's an annoying thing that I hope by pointing out, will make more people complain about
