    On paper the LG HU810 is great and out of the box the image quality is wonderful. The problem is that it is unreliable and dealing with LG is a nightmare. I don't feel lucky right now but maybe I am a bit lucky that LG is offering me my money back after shipping it back to them for repair a 3rd time. If anyone wants to roll the dice on this I would recommend paying for the extra warranty time. I'll be finding something else, no idea what yet.

    Really nice rich picture, however, projector has a tough time with with bright white objects (random yellow artifacts appear). Turning down contrast (to 60 or below from 100) seemed to fix the issue.

      im in market for a projecteor - my top favorites out now are epson 5040 (bang for your buck!), epson 5050, and this LG HU810 in the video
      From reading and watching youtube the info i get is:
      Epson 5050 advantages are better blacks (in a well light controlled room), lower latency in gaming mode, lens memory, 3d capable
      LG hu810 has better HDR, much longer bulb life (3500 vs 20,000 hours), and (subjectively by one youtuber) sharper 4k image

    Rob, I mounted my LG AU810PB a few weeks ago. Fantastic projector as you indicated. I have a few observations. I'm using the soundsend transmitter and I have the Klipsch RW 5.1 system. I'm connected without issue through hdmi/earc. I assume that's why the WISA menu is not available to me in the studio settings. Is that due to it being a USB feature with the Axim transmitter? Am I missing any cool features by not having this connection? Also the light bleed on the ceiling is a little annoying. Do you suggest any thing besides a piece of paper to give it a cleaner look. Thanks.

    • @ProjectorCentralUSA
      @ProjectorCentralUSA  3 роки тому +1

      I gather your HDMI connection is seen as any other wired audio component by the projector, Shanaya; the projector would need to recognize a WISA transmitter at its USB port to engage its internal WISA setup menus. But you may have the same or more options in your Soundsend app for controlling the sound, and as long as the projector's remote is able to control the volume I can't see any difference at all in the setup.

    Sad to see no 3d support. Ever since I bought the Epson 6050 I absolutely love watching 3d movies. Now that tv's and projectors are finally able to deliver bright, quality 3d, the industry is moving away from it. hopefully it makes a comeback

      James, we've got a lot in our Home Theater Buyer's Guide at ProjectorCentral that talks about this ( www.projectorcentral.com/home-theater.htm ) but the one thing direct view TVs have going for them vs projectors is the ability to hit much higher peak brightness, which is particularly important for HDR. But the large, immersive image you get with a projector at 100 inches or greater easily trumps that, and there's something organic about the reflected light coming off a screen vs. the direct image beamed into your eyes with a TV that makes the experience comfortable and engaging in a way TVs are not. You really have to see it in your space to understand it and appreciate it. And although projectors always look best in a light-controlled room, these benefits hold true in ambient light if you have the right projector and ambient-light-rejecting screen. The new Ultra Short Throw (UST) laser projectors and UST ALR screens have proven this. ( www.projectorcentral.com/ultra-short-throw-projectors.cfm )

    Thanks for the video review. I impulse ordered it based on the website review. It's been 8 years since I had a projector (moved homes) and I'm sure the LG is infinitely better than the Epson 720 I had in that home. I'm building a dual display set up with a TV also in the same space and a drop down screen for projector use. I already expect a huge black level difference with the TV but as long as it's acceptable, I'm not too concerned. The image size is the big show stopper and equally sharp 4k image for the projector.

    • @ProjectorCentralUSA
      @ProjectorCentralUSA  3 роки тому +2

      Scot, that's an interesting proposal. Offhand, I'd say native black level for dark scenes is probably superior on your JVC, but you may find the extra brightness and dynamic HDR on the LG is attractive for most other content, and the LG is capable of a highly accurate image if fully calibrated. The lens on your JVC is superior, but the full 4K resolution counters that to some degree on the LG vs the JVC's 1080p pixel shifting. Then there's that no-lamp-replacement thing. I think you'd really have to take a look at the LG and see what you think. - R.S.

      that is one of the most hilarious ,,upgrde'' i have ever heard in my life, going from a projector that is capable of giving almost 150 time more native contrast that this LG :)))))
      Yes, you read this corectly, this LG barely gets 300:1 on off which is garbage. Your JVC if calibrated properly can go easily over 50 000:1.
      Don't even bother with reviews for LG and Samsung, 99% of the so called reviewers don't have the guts to call out these companies for selling overpriced projectors or TV, with crap image. They know that the moment they do this, those corporations will eat them like nothing.
      If you have money to burn, go buy a lumangen pro. That will make your JVC very HDR capable, don't waste your money on shitty projector with garbage image that are very agressively pushed by marketing and paid youtubers.

    The calculator on your site says this projector has a native vertical offset of center of lens is same height as bottom of image. LGs specs say this projector has a 110% offset, which with their definition means center of lens is below the bottom of the image by 10% of the image height. Early units seem to have a native vertical offset of center of lens at center of picture. Can you comment on what you experienced with your unit?

    • @ProjectorCentralUSA
      @ProjectorCentralUSA  3 роки тому

      For most of our eval our unit was on a shelf that put it at approximately mid-height of a 92-inch diagonal screen, so there was plenty of range to move the image up or down from that position. When I eventually inverted it and put it on a higher shelf that placed the lens about even with the top of the screen, I noticed it had limited downward range. Worked fine for my purpose, but users in the field have complained that they can't get the image low enough in some cases when using their existing ceiling mount from a prior projector. I have no reason to believe that the offset has changed from the early production through now.

      I've done an in house test of the JVC Nx7 vs the LG and the difference is not worth the $8000 price. Even though it's the bulb version it has all the exact same display and guts. With most projectors costing $2,000 to $10,000 we are talking nominal gains, like a less than 15% difference. The LG has a sharper 4k image in my opinion and the color is a bit more vibrant on the LG. So for the $6,000 savings you can use that money so many other places other than throwing it away. Again this is my opinion and this LG is my 4th projector I've owned in 25 years. For the price this thing rocks!

    Thanks for the review. Do the more expensive screens reduce or get rid of laser speckle? Like the Screen Innovations Black Diamond? Is a 1.3 gain screen too much with the 2700 lumens this projector puts out. Would mounting it at the furthest distance for screen size help with laser speckle as well?

    • @ProjectorCentralUSA
      @ProjectorCentralUSA  3 роки тому +3

      The projector's iris has enough range to accommodate a 1.3 gain screen even in the dark. If you have to take the brightness down you can. I did my viewing on two 1.3 gain matte white screens and a 1.2 gain gray ALR. Regarding laser speckle, it's got something to do with the smoothness of the screen surface AND the projector design, and I wouldn't say cost is the determining factor though better screens may have smoother texture. It's a tough call. If you don't already own a screen, one option might be to get the projector first and then acquire some sample screen swatches. Tape the swatches flat to the wall, fire up a red test pattern from a generator, computer, or disc, focus the lens, and see what you get with the different materials from your expected throw distance and image size.

      This has a pure color laser source no bulbs and has 2700 lumens of pure color vs the n7 low non color lumens.

So even though the JVC boast more lumens it falls way short on color lumens. There have been reviews for the JVC that show its limitations due to the high amount of blue laser and not singular control of each like the LG.

    Which would you recommend, the Epson 5050 or this LG?

    • @ProjectorCentralUSA
      @ProjectorCentralUSA  3 роки тому

      We have addressed this question in the comments section of the review at ProjectorCentral. It's a trade-off of the Epson's better blacks and contrast on dark material vs. better HDR and a solid-state laser engine on the LG.

      I have tried the Epson 6050 and 5050 and black level is all epson has. The LG has a true 4k image instead of the fuax k on the epson. Contrast is very excellent with the LG and color is on point. Just reaserch the Epson screen door effect and you will probably make your decision.

    Excellent review.
    Does this projector have a anamorphic lens skew function (vertical shift) so that a 16:9 picture can be shifted vertically on a 2.35:1 screen. Before a anamorphic lens is placed in front of the projector lens to give a 2.35:1 image (cinemascope).

    • @kman9387
      @kman9387 3 роки тому

      Not that I am aware of. Since this is native 16x9 and no lens memory I would venture to say no.
      I just use simple masking that I made for the 2.35 that way when I watch imax movies i don't have to worry about expensive tricks to get rid of the bars.

    I just got this projector yesterday and I have to be honest I’m not very impressed with it. I don’t know what you guys are seeing. The picture is dull and dark when I watch Blu-ray movies. It’s weird because when I turn on the projector the logo pictures look better than the movies you play. Looking at the pictures that come up when you first turn on the projector makes you think it’s going to be really good. Once I start playing the movies the picture and content looks bad. Now to be fair I just got it yesterday and still playing with it. But so far I’m not that impressed. And I’ve been messing with projectors for over 25-years; I know when I see a good one or not. This projector doesn’t even come close to my Sony VPL-PH 50 LCD projector. I’m going to do a side by side showing how this LG can’t even compare to the Sony. LCD is way better than DLP in my opinion. And I had a NEC DLP projector I just sold I had for over 5 years that look better than this LG.

Do you think i would get better image quality and light with this LG? Does the change worth? My Epson and all Epson unlesss tw9400 is not possible to obtain 4k 60fps and HDR at the same time, what about the Lg?

      Your lumens rating is close to the LG but with the True color lumens and Great HDR handling of this projector it might be a great improvement.
      Go to projector central and use the projector calculator to verify what your FL will be in comparison.
      One thing to consider is laser light speckle and high gain screens. You would need to go with 0.9 or 0.8 for perfect performance.
