@@derekofbaltimore They don't want you to spend money on home theater equipment or anything else really. Especially if you have equipment already. Getting rid of, as they might say "perfectly good equipment" and replacing it with new equipment is not a well understood concept by female spouses. Plus they don't understand the nuances between say a $300 subwoofer and a $1000 subwoofer. It helps I get a yearly bonus so at least I've been able to argue that its "extra" money. Just upgraded to an 85" Sony with some of my bonus money but it still took some convincing.

Welcome not bad time to get into home cinema. I started in 1996 in 2013 spent £8000 on my perfect set up i could afford and added on on ever since slowly slowly and i think I'm in the perfect place with my set up for now. Theres so much that in 2013 when i was looking around for my set up.i thought is try it with the assistant at sony center, i asked him.so many question he was not aware about that he said i should apply for a job at there branch in westfields shopping centre but i finally settled with Denon for my audio and picture quality 😂😂😂
Personal tip- if your room calls for it, a horizontal setup is not nearly as bad as many think. it present an extremely wide sound stage. For me I had a window that I wanted access to on one wall and extra seating without a second row so horizontal was the best option for me. Not half bad
Another mistake is decorating the room with movie posters etc.. People don’t realize that things like posters and popcorn machines in commercial cinemas are in the lobby or hallways not the screening room. I want to to watch the movie on my screen not reflected on a movie poster. I remember seeing one home theater that had a popcorn machine to the side of the projection screen.
You mean you don't want to see the reflection of the poster on the TV screen? My movie posters are dark so I don't have that problem. But if I wear a white t-shirt I can see it on the screen.
my 8th add on would be seating. Avoid high backed cushioned recliner chairs, because they block out the room acoustics from the rear. if you want surround sound, get chairs without the head cushions, but be comfortable enough to stay in for 3 hours straight.
Another mistake is having your room designed by the wrong people. One of the worst I ever encountered is a friend who built a new house and had the builder design the home theatre. All speakers were in the ceiling, with the left, center, and right speakers all next to each other, just inches apart, directly above the screen, and rear speakers only about a foot in front of them.
@@robertklacza1160 Plenty of GCs will agree to not only pre-wire for a home theater, but install speakers. The funniest was when a contractor ran one single speaker cable to 5 in-ceiling speakers, just leaving a loop hanging out of the ceiling for each speaker hole. Home owners spent a lot more money having us snake new wires through that finished ceiling.
Spending too much on video, too small a screen, and not enough power, are the 3 issues I expect to observe when entering someone's home theater. They are so common, they are the norm rather than the exception. Great video.
Just pulled the trigger on building a home today. What would you recommend for the dimensions of the room for the interior? Double drywall for sound dampening, plus sound dampening insulation? I’m good on speaker placement, screen size, audio placement, just want to make sure I frame the room correctly. I’m going to start with a 65” that I have, to save cost, but plan to later add a projector, maybe laser or something.
I have been doing a/v for 23 years. Sometimes you have to go with clients wishes as opposed to what would work best. I do always try to tell them what i think and feel is better for the area but oftentimes find it is what looks better, or what is smaller,etc.
Wow, great video for someone who is thinking about adding a media room. I do have a question. My media room room will be 16ftx16ft. The TV and seating area will be off-center by one foot. Meaning the center of the TV will be 7ft from one wall and 9ft from the another wall. Will this cause a problem for sound and/or will it look lousy
Aesthetically it may not look as perfect as it being centered. However, we've seen many rooms that are slightly off center to have room for an aisle or other reasons. For sound, you can correct for that if you have room correction in your AVR. Do you have a recommendation whether to still use rear speakers when your couch is directly up against the wall? Should I not use rears then, and just use a great soundbar?

RE: Angled Speakers - seems most availbale are angles at 15 degrees - is THAT enough to compensate for ceiling ATMOS speakers that are angled ~45 degrees from Main listening position? Thanks.
#1. Screen width x 1.2 = minimum viewing distance. Screen width x 1.6 = optimal viewing distance. #2. Use flat or eggshell sheen with dark colors. TIP: Eggshell is best overall, because flat shows fingerprints. #3. Minimum riser height for multi-row seating = 12" #4. Audio/Video performance. This is mostly subjective and is why you should have a pro help design the system. #5. You should have dedicated circuit(s) for theater equipment. #6. DO NOT use the auto calibration with cheap receivers like Sony, Onkyo/Integra, Denon, etc. Most use Audyssey which sucks and will often make the system sound worse. Unless you have a higher end product like Anthem which has it's own room correction software, learn how to manually setup the receiver. It's really not hard. #7. Plan for acoustic treatments. You can put a world class audio system in an untreated room and it will sound like garbage. This is probably the single biggest mistake I see with entry-level theaters. This also directly impacts how well a room correction software will work. Software cannot turn a terrible room into a good room. Get the room at least 80% of the way there by treating first reflections and let the software do the rest.

Looking for some help here. I have a steep slope room, and planning to turn it to a home theatre. Dimensions are, 14.5 feet wide, 19.5 feet long, only 8.5 feet of ceiling is 9 feet tall and then slope down to 4 feet tall (about 11 feet long). Will this room treatable for a home theater room? I'm currently running a 5.1 , 1 subwoofer, 1 center speaker and 2 ceiling speakers. I want to add 2 rear speakers or 2 floor speakers on stands, redirect the two front ceiling speakers to floor speakers standing next to my tv. Do I need a 7.1 or a 9.1 receiver to make it all come together?
If you currently have 5 speakers and a sub and want to add 2 more, you only need a 7.1 receiver, but it might make sense to get one that has processing for 9.1 in case you do more down the road, thanks for watching
I have Klipsch 50W RMS speakers Right/Left and Surround, but 100W RMS speaker in the center. Is that a good setup for a home theater? I sometimes feel only center channel is working as lot of sound comes from center only. Could you please advise. TIA
That is a lot of subs, there are also only one or two home theater processors on the market that can handle beyond 4 subs. 4 is typically plenty for most rooms. Thanks for watching

the sound engineer, sitting at his mixing console, mixed the sound at 85 dB and at peaks up to 115 dB studios are usually much larger in area than a room in any house and there is such a parameter it is called reverberation time as a rule in large rooms the reverberation time is less than in small ones and in order for us to be able to enjoy the content in the form in which the sound engineer recorded it, we need to reduce this reverberation time to the level it is in the studio

Another question is Is it better to have a screen for a projector or would Theater Screen Paint (6' X 10') work as well? I didn't even know they made Theater Screen Paint until I visited a high-end home theater store in Salt Lake about 22 years ago.
There is a reason 99% of movie theaters use Stewart screens. The picture is much better. If you compare the paint to some of the ultra cheap screens, they are about the same, but the good screens are in a totally different class.

I've been to Imax theaters and the audio has always been weak and not loud enough for me. It was especially bad while watching The new Top Gun Maverick. If you think movie theaters play volume loud, you have ears that don't usually hear loud music in the 120+DB range all the time.

Hey there, I have a Yamaha A-3080 AVR and was curious if it made any sense to bi-amp my front Polk Audio LSI9 bookshelf speakers to my Pioneer M-72 amp? The 4 channel amp has not been used in years because my old Denon had no pre-outs. My current system in a 5.1.2. Thanks Ron
Bi-amp wont make any noticably difference in sound quality. However it is a smart idea to use the 4-channel amp with the pre-outs on the 3080 to drive the ceiling or surround speakers. Anything that will relieve some pressure from the main reciever is smart (otherwise current restrictions might impaire the main recievers output when listening at loud levels).
Yes, that is very important and we tell everyone if they are building from scratch and can change the dimensions to work with us to get them right, however only about 1% of our customers have the ability to change dimensions so we left that out. We have seen some rooms that are almost a cube that are almost hopeless to get good sound in. That is why we feel acoustic treatment is super important.
Room Dimensions/ Ratio is the Tall order in any stereo listening/ home theater room. At least it can b predicted what the expectations can b .( in a typical shoe box kind rooms )

That depends on the room. You will not be able to put speakers behind an acoustic transparent screen, but it will be super bright. However, they are not cheap. We just priced one out this week a little bigger than that from Samsung for a client and it was $300K
The one thing that surprised me more than anything is how little power my theater uses. I've got 6 subs, 400ish rms watts each. 15 chanels , averages out to 200ish watts per channel and a projector. 15 amp circuit, full blast, no problem. I guess I have good power.
You should just play the test tones in your Denon receiver, see what happens, you may have a wiring issue or the YT test is faulty. If you mean part of the image looks out of focus and other parts do not, if the front is parallel to the screen, you could have a problem. Your projector may have some keystone adjustments in it that got out of whack, you would be best to restore all factory settings and start over.

Good advice! I definitely made the color mistake on my old theater, the red and blue I picked just didn't look the way I expected, it looked pretty nasty so I repainted in grey and dark blue. I won't make that mistake on the one I'm building now! As for power, all amplifier stacks get their own dedicated 20 amp circuit and the front end gets its own. That's L/R subs, L/R mains, center and surround so five dedicated 20 amp circuits from a dedicated breaker box... plus the one for the front end. I figure that should do it! I'll have to learn about video calibration but audio will be handled with multiple miniDSP modules. For my 2-ch system I use the nanoDigi with external DACs but for the theater I'll probably go with the 2x4 HD just because there's going to be a lot of them. It would require a lot of external DAC's to handle it.
@@scottnewnam6976 Maybe but I like overkill:-) Each left, right and center speaker get two Emotiva BasX A700 7-ch amplifiers to power the CBT arrays. The left right could be done with fewer amplifier channels but it's just easier to use separate channels for each shading bank. The center speaker is partially physically straight, acoustically curved with DSP delays so it needs all fourteen channels of the two 7-ch amplifiers. Left and right also each get an Emotiva BasX A5175 5-ch amp for surrounds and Atmos. For the woofers I'm looking at the 1000 watt ICE modules from Parts Express. There will be multiple woofer locations with independent DSP and thus amplifier channels. So, it might be a little tight for just one 20 amp circuit, if only for inrush current at power up. I suppose I could stage the 12 volt triggers to avoid this but given I was putting in all these dedicated circuits myself to a dedicated breaker box mounted on the same wall, it was just easier to give each group of amps their own breaker.
@@mfkhometheater7742 If you do more than one circuit, be sure that the circuits are on the same phase of the circuit breaker box. Otherwise, you can end up with a ground loop and have some slight buzz in the system that you don't want. In general, I think the better solution is your suggested staging of the 12v triggers and using one dedicated 20 amp circuit. By the way, you want to use this same circuit if possible for your projector as well to avoid the ground loop possibility coming through the projector to the audio as well--this is what used to also cause hum bars on tvs when connected to a different circuit than the audio system. Sounds like you love this stuff and are going to have a rocking theater. Good luck with it.
@@scottnewnam6976 Definitely, all the breakers will be on the same phase and each ground comes back to a common point. If I use just one breaker, it's all got to split out somewhere to each amplifier. A single outlet would have about a dozen multi-ch amplifiers plugged into it and the front end through a 30+ ft extension cord. Whether it's through amplifier power cord or through romex, it all just needs to tie to power and ground at the same point... star point ground. You can think of it as all the amplifier power cords all being plugged directly into the main feed in the breaker box where it has a lot more than 20 amps. I should probably still sequence the power up, it will be an easy matter to build a circuit to sequence them with a few hundred millisecond increments and even on separate breakers it's probably a good idea. I'm looking forward to getting the theater up and running but I suspect it will be June or July before the house is even completed. With my 100% travel job it may take a year to build out the theater after I move in. It's going to be a serious task to build the CBT arrays plus I'm planning to build the screen, the equipment rack for the front end equipment etc etc etc... I built everything in my old theater, don't want to change that now so it will take time but I think worth it in the end.
@Baz The speakers will all be DIY. Ground plane CBT line arrays for the mains and a horizontal full CBT array for the center. The center speaker will be physically curved in the middle but the ends will be physically straight and acoustically curved by DSP just so the speaker will not be too deep to put behind the screen. Because the straight portion requires incremental delays and shading each increment requires its own DSP and amplifier channel. Also, it's just easier to use individual amplifier channels for each shading group so the current plan is to use two Emotiva BasX A700 amplifiers for each LCR speaker.
I have built several home cinemas for personal use. I have come to conclusion that the sound is almost as important as the picture to get an immersive experience. Atmos is fantastic if implemented properly. However, when prioritizing audio components - spend as much as you can on the front, center and left and subwoofers (at least two subs). You can always upgrade the remaining speakers later on. Also, go for the accoustically transparent (at) screen and place l,c,r behind the screen. Even a 77” oled is no match for a 10 year old good 1080p projector with a big screen when it comes to cinema experience. Use the oled for gaming etc.
I'm hesitant to spring for a projector because, to me, dolby vision content is so beautiful. Do you really think it's no match even though it cant display blacks as deep or colors as bright?
True, Atmos properly choosing the speaker and its positioning w.r.t the seatings works great ! At least 2subs for 2reasons, 1 for the placement and 2nd for the different kinds of sub. Large screen with less clarity is anytime better for the visual treat than the other way round, I agree with u.
Good video. If I set MV as per video so for achieving 75 DB I have to move speaker DB level in minus or more than minus 10. But in AVR level can move max up to minus 10 and not beyond minus 10 as there are max level is minus 10. I m using Yamaha HTR 3072 AVR with Yamaha high end Bookshelf speakers with Yamaha SW 300 sub woofer. My Flat area is 130 sq feet so I think in my case I can not set MV 0 so I have to set MV in minus than only I can set 75 DB level for each speakers. It's a 5.1 system. Thank you. What matters is getting the levels matched. It does not matter where the individual speaker levels fall as long as when you measure them with an SPL app they are the same. If you need to move up to 80 for this to happen that is ok too.
is there ANY real/perceived/usable audio difference between a regular speaker you simply lay on its side, or at a slight angle, vs the "angled" Atmos speakers, that i see at insane prices

LPCM can sound good, but the problem is the format is normally just done with two channels and not surround. It can suppport 7.1 but we have not seen many instances where it does, especially in concert videos. Thanks for watching.

These days you can buy older model, ex-demo or second hand equipment for a fraction of the cost of the newer model. The difference in quality of sound and/or performance will not be huge. If you aren't fussed about all the fancy seats, fancy lights and you have an honest sales person, you'll save a fortune. For example, I tested three of the native Sony 4k Projectors against the Epson EHTW9400 pixel shifter and the Epson was the winner for me in terms of performance. The bottom two Sony models (at over twice the price) were dark and disappointing. Increasing the brightness harshly affected contrast with the only positive being a slightly sharper picture. Dolby Atmos, more than one Sub & rear Centre speakers are unnecessary for most rooms due to the size. Anything bigger than 16ft by 16ft will be fine with a 5.1 set up. With the correct choices, you could install your own Cinema quality experience for around about $7-8K, after which, you'll never need to go to the Cinema again. IMO, compared to a decent set-up, it's overrated anyway. The picture is dark, the sound is muddy, the bass is over baring, the prices are a rip off and you mostly have to deal with 'the usual people'.
Thanks for sharing, you must be in Europe as that Epson is the same as the US 6050, which is an outstanding projector for the cost. Yes, you can save some $$ with used equipment, especially speakers, we do a brisk trade in business in our retail stores and always have some good deals floating around on speakers. @@AudioAdvice Yeah. I'm in Europe and did the meters to feet and pounds to dollars for my American chums. I should have added that my opinion on the Sub would be dependent on choice of FL & FR Speaker. I've always chosen floor standing speakers with dual bass drivers on each. Along with my trusty old Velodyne CHT-12q, I've found the bass to be more than enough in my 22x22 foot room. Yeah, if you're going with smaller speakers then twin subs would be needed.
The reason you do dual subs isn't as much to blow you out of the seat, but to have better seat to seat consistency and better EQ curve out of the box. You might position that one sub perfectly so it sounds good to you, BUT your friend sitting next or behind you will have a totally different experience with nulls and weirdness. Duals help a lot to solve that.
@@justinbeamon6624 Untrue. As I said, unless you're in a huge room, multiple subs is pointless. I'm in a 36 meter square room with one 12 inch sub in the corner of the room. The sound from the sub is non directional. The low frequency (not counting my floor standing Rubicon 8's) is perfectly adequate, and the sound to the left, right, back or front of me would not be improved with an additional sub. Most people have smaller rooms, and 99.9% of the time, one decent sized sub is perfectly fine. Amps coming with additional support for 2 subs are mostly pointless, let alone sounds field for .3 or .4. It's simply a cash grab.
Number 8. Expecting to have a quality sound with false economy cables. It's not just about quality conductors within a cable, which btw as well as medium to high they will also help the audio to sound better at low volumes too. But it's actually the quality of the shielding that will help the ROOM to sound better at no volumes (noise floor) The more cables I shield the quieter my room becomes! In fact the last group of cables I shielded just happened to be my HDMI's and low & behold the room became quieter yet again. 🥳
@@Totalplonker Gotcha, there is an iPhone app called Decibel X that is pretty accurate, it will not pick up any subsonic bass from nearby traffic, but its pretty effective at finding the noise floor.

I would say buy trailing edge equipment, you dont need the latest and greatest tuner, a model 3-5 years old can be purchased for 30-50 percent of what a new one costs, leaving you more money for upgrades elsewhere.
When i turn off the lights my busy room disappears except for the screen that's because 90% of everything in there is black including my walls. Only thing you can see is my screen which looks like its floating in the air. Another pain in the ass is trying to de couple and isolate everything. lol
on number 5 "may need a dedicated circuit" umm no how about absolutely need multiple dedidicated circuits. 1 circuit for subs. 1 circuits for lights. 1 circuit for remaining outlets. 1 circuit and if you are really cool a 240V circuit to really keep your amplifiers drawing low current from a 240v outlet
Cables do matter, as a retired audio engineer I’ve achieved better clarity in both sound and picture by swapping out cheap cables for a higher quality brand.
While I agree with your sentiment, there are exceptions. In a home theater, there is typically one long HDMI run to the projector, and cable quality matters tremendously when HDMI cables exceed 10ft/ 3M. Its not magic, just basic issues of capacitance and resistance. I've also seen numerous contractors install 18 awg spkr wire in the walls.
Cables matter to a point. There no reason to spend $200 on a 6ft HDMI cable, but going to the dollar store is equally as stupid. Put aside a reasonable amount of money for cabling. Thick speaker wire, high quality HDMI and sub cables ARE important.
Guys they were talking about speaker wire. Obviously you need a reliable HDMI cable that won't drop your signal. Beyond that, it's not worth agonizing over miniscule speaker cable differences when the changes you can get from speakers and EQ are many orders of magnitude greater and easier to control.

I thought I always wanted a home theater room. I watched a video where this guy built a great dedicated room and one of his comments was that he was the only one that used it! Unless your wife really wants it, you will be the only one using it. You are better off having a nice system without all of the speakers that you can share in an environment that others will use on a regular basis.
It really depend, most people tell us it becomes their favorite room in the home and they use it all together every night. But there does need to be a family interest in movies, TV series, and concerts. We have also found if the room feels like a cave (all black everywhere) it is more likely to be a one person room, adding a tiny bit of interest to the space makes a big difference in how it feels. You don't really need much. Get some cheap surround speakers on stands for the 5 channels and a small sub. Get a basic 5 channel receiver. Best to get a home theater in a box to start with. They are good enough.
I’ve found when I want the best audio mixes is to go back to my laserdisc collection for movies in 5.1 ac-3 or dts not compressed and now a days with those stupid nearfeild mixes are bloody awful and should be thrown away

Which I have made a video on.. I do visit it on and off to make edits on it.. I Digress. At the time of working for Sega world Sydney back in 1997.. The Good Ol days.. Remember the Good Ol days when the world was a different place.. Ohhhh I do remember. Back then.. Music wise.. Well to play music.. When I was in my old room at my parents place.. I had my ghetto blaster from the 90's.. I eventually bought.. To go with it a compact disc player.. Which cost me about $70 at the time.. Which I would have thought was expensive. Also.. I remember at one point buying some headphones.. Similar to apple ear buds which weren't heard of back then. This is how I would listen to music. By the mid to late 90's I didn't really listen to anything on open speaker.. I remember listening to my Led Zeppelin cd's with headphones in. Now.. At some point in 1997.. I decided for some reason to.. I contemplated getting some speakers.. I don't know why. I went to Big W.. The equivalent of Walmart.. Pretty much.. And I would have seen what they had to offer but probably dismissed it. I have a friend.. Who I haven't spoken to in years.. But at the time in the late 90's I spoke with him every second day. A buisness man... Very successful. Knew a lot about music and speakers. We loved Heavy Metal.. Which is my main love. I am very eclectic though. My friend worked for a company at the time. What happened was I mentioned to him that I was Possibly interested in getting some better speakers.. I was contemplating it. This was a mistake to mention to him.. Which I half realized at the time. All I wanted was the option of some new speakers.. But he went into full sales man aggressive mode and said.. Ohhh Nahhh.. Dude..You need the whole thing. He ended up getting me to go out to go out to a shop complex where his friend worked who dealt in speaker home theater setup systems.. Way more than I was even interested in at the time. So.. I went out there.. I'm listening to the Whitesnake album as I typ this.. Stimulating actually. I went out to this warehouse shop. Met my friends work friend. Semi aggressive business sales guy. When I turned up.. He thought I was ready to purchase on the spot.. My friend must have said I was ready to buy.. I Was not. Anyway.. I was shown the JBL set up they had.. And I wasn't buying into it.. Wasn't going for this guys sales pitch.. Not initially anyway. I said.. I just want a couple of speakers.. Maybe. In retrospect.. The whole thing was madness.. But we have to remember that the late 90's.. I was in my mid 20's.. And it was an open speaker era.. Not that many people used headphones like they do today. Anyway.. This sales guy said.. Do you want good sound.. Quality sound. That's right.. My friend had two JBL speakers at the time.. And I thought I possibly wanted something similar. Anyway.. This sales guy says.. Look at this system.. It's home theater.. It's 5.1.. It's loud.. You'll love it. I'm like.. It's just for my bedroom.. I don't need all this. Somehow.. Over the course of 40 minutes this sales guy managed to talk me into buying a JBL.. 5.1 Home theater system.. Which I completely didn't need. It wouldn't be until 15 years later that I would look back on it and realize.. I never needed it. Anyway.. I got suckered into a deal.. For $899.. Interest free.. And I got to pay it off.. Big Mistake. I remember the words of the salesman at the end of the transaction.. He said.. Have a Loud Christmas.. I was like.. Yeah.. Ok.. I was half hearted about it. My friend.. Was over the moon about it.. And my other friend was like.. Ohhh new system huh.. My ghetto blaster gets me by just fine. I took it home.. And at first did not open it.. I was completely reluctant to open the box. In fact I think my friend called and said.. How does it sound dude.. I'm like.. I haven't open the box.. He was like.. Huh? What? He is the type of person to rip all the plastic off frustratedly as quickly as he can like 5 minutes after purchase.. Where as I will look at the product I have purchased and will eventually reluctantly disturb the lovely packaging. I've got cd's I purchased mid 90's.. Still in their plastic. It's part of my ocd. Anyway.. About 2 days later.. I decided to in the afternoon.. Reluctantly open the box. As I was going to return the whole lot.. But my friend said.. Please don't do that.. My friend will lose the commission.. I was like.. Ohhhhhhh Ok. He also said.. Don't you want a state of the art system. So.. I unboxed it. It involved/contained.. A JBL amplifier.. A subwoofer and 5 speakers and a remote. I set it up reluctantly.. In my average size bedroom.. And I'm thinking.. This system is too big for my bedroom. I got it setup.. And put a cd in.. The sound was terrific I will admit.. Beautiful sound.. But too much for anything I needed.. Yet a great sound.. But too much for the house. Never needed to put it above volume 3. I did end up keeping it and got used to it. Much of the time having it on volume 2. Down the track on the last day the money was due.. Which I went through a lot of stress with.. Because at the last 3 month mark before the final payment was due.. Which was about a year later.. The company started to send me harassment letters.. You owe us money.. Pay now. I ended up sending them a check which cost me $7.. To shut them up and get them off my back. So.. I have recieved return error.. My post is continued as a reply..
Cont'd.. For years I blasted my music at home through the JBL's.. my parents never complained too much.. I broke 2 of the tweekers on two of the speakers. The system was very good.. Very loud.. Too loud for a bedroom.. Ridiculous for a bedroom actually.. Even too loud for a lounge room in all honesty. When I moved out of home in 2010.. I left the JBL's there.. By that point 2 of the speakers worked. Two years ago I reflected back on it.. Actually it was about 2014 and I reflected back on that purchase.. A total waste.. A complete waste of money. I should have been much stronger at the time and just put my foot down assertively and said.. I don't need all this.. I'm just looking for a simple sound.. All this is Too much and my ghetto blaster is just fine.. Which I still have under my old bed at my parents house. In fact in retrospect and looking back to 1997.. All I needed was a good pair of headphones.. In fact back then I wish I knew about Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro.. Which is what I'm wearing at the moment listening to Whitesnake. A beautiful headphone which I have been using since 2019. I have my Audio Technica M50x for the bedroom... And to sleep I have my apple ear buds. Ohhhh and when I would visit other people's homes.. Houses.. Units.. They would have a very basic ghetto blaster.. Or very basic stereo system setup.. And I would never say.. Ohhhhh I have JBL.. I'd just keep quiet. JBL Home theater system.. I don't think they are meant for a regular house.. Certainly not.. As the neighbours would probably hear it. They are probably better for nightclub situations. I have regret that I bought that system in 1997.. My friend was so proud of it.. And I would say.. Your not the one who has to live with it.. Then he would become confused.. And say.. Are you ungrateful.. And I would say.. But I don't need all this.. It's over the top. Ohh.. In 2018.. My partner and myself we picked up a Yamaha 5.1 small speaker sound system from the Salvation army in Goulburn.. $100.. Got it home. Once again.. I was reluctant to buy it.. Then my partner said.. If you don't buy it.. I will. Got it home.. Got it setup.. Beautiful sound.. Don't use it often though as we live in a unit.. As we are considerate of our neighbours.. Even though our neighbours blast their their tv as loud as they want whenever they feel like it.. The Irony.. Though it's been better the last 6 months.. Fortunately we have good thick walls here. That's a different subject though.. And my Beyerdynamic's cut out about half of the background noise. Previous to this.. A week before the Yamaha system.. We purchased a Samsung sound bar to go with our new tv.. Got the sound bar home.. Reluctant to take it out of it's box.. But after two days.. Conceded.. Set it up.. Underwhelmed in every way possible.. Don't buy sound bars.. They are awful.. Total waste of time and money. Then bought the Yamaha from Salvation army.. When I got the Yamaha setup it sounded phenomenally better than the sound bar. Then we took the sound bar back to Harvey Norman.. Told/explained to the guy there what happened.. What we thought.. He said.. Apples and oranges mate. Then he contemplated for about 10 seconds.. Then gave us a refund. Point being.. Is that I never needed the JBL home theater system.. They are not a gimick.. But you'd never need one for your lounge room or your bedroom.. A basic ghetto blaster with headphones is sufficient.. I don't even use that anymore as I have a Fiio Dac plugged into my usb on windows ten and my Beryerdynamic DT 770 Pro plugged into that.. Simple.. And for the bedroom I have my Ipod.. Plug my Audio Technica's into that. I do regret buying the JBL system back then.. It was excessive and over the top. Next step.. Copy and paste this to my documents.. Open office writer.. Before I even post it. Beautiful.. Done.. As sometimes.. The host of a channel doesn't like what I have to say and deletes my comment.. Which is enormously frustrating.. Considering it took 45 minutes to typ this. Also.. As soon as I post I will take a photo of it. JBL Home theater systems are very un necessary for a home. I have proof read this twice and am satisfied.

Depending. They Just didn't suit me at that time. In regard of the Yamaha 5.1 system.. It's a great amplifier.. HTR 5950 and the speakers are small and heavy and I have it setup with our Samsung tv.. Works great.. Terrific sound. When I watch a movie in the evening sometimes.. I plug my Beyerdynamic headphones into the amp.. Wonderful.
you had me until you said the cables are not good enough if you buy the right gauge copper cable it doesnt matter what they cost might as well be cheap you save some money and invest in something more important than fancy looking expensive cables that do jack for your audio and just make the people selling them rich
I'm about to buy a €600 projector and point it at my light grey wallpaper, hook it up to a €70 2.1 pc speaker system and have that playing in a room with empty walls. I feel like a villian watching these type of videos, but in reality I have low standards and I just want a bigger screen.

@@derekofbaltimore They don't want you to spend money on home theater equipment or anything else really. Especially if you have equipment already. Getting rid of, as they might say "perfectly good equipment" and replacing it with new equipment is not a well understood concept by female spouses. Plus they don't understand the nuances between say a $300 subwoofer and a $1000 subwoofer. It helps I get a yearly bonus so at least I've been able to argue that its "extra" money. Just upgraded to an 85" Sony with some of my bonus money but it still took some convincing.

Welcome not bad time to get into home cinema. I started in 1996 in 2013 spent £8000 on my perfect set up i could afford and added on on ever since slowly slowly and i think I'm in the perfect place with my set up for now. Theres so much that in 2013 when i was looking around for my set up.i thought is try it with the assistant at sony center, i asked him.so many question he was not aware about that he said i should apply for a job at there branch in westfields shopping centre but i finally settled with Denon for my audio and picture quality 😂😂😂
Personal tip- if your room calls for it, a horizontal setup is not nearly as bad as many think. it present an extremely wide sound stage. For me I had a window that I wanted access to on one wall and extra seating without a second row so horizontal was the best option for me. Not half bad
Mine is 24’ x 14’ set up the long way, tried it the traditional way, sounds way better the way you have yours.
Another mistake is decorating the room with movie posters etc.. People don’t realize that things like posters and popcorn machines in commercial cinemas are in the lobby or hallways not the screening room. I want to to watch the movie on my screen not reflected on a movie poster. I remember seeing one home theater that had a popcorn machine to the side of the projection screen.

You mean you don't want to see the reflection of the poster on the TV screen? My movie posters are dark so I don't have that problem. But if I wear a white t-shirt I can see it on the screen.
my 8th add on would be seating. Avoid high backed cushioned recliner chairs, because they block out the room acoustics from the rear. if you want surround sound, get chairs without the head cushions, but be comfortable enough to stay in for 3 hours straight.

Best decision I made was going with a super comfy elegant couch instead of theater chairs.
Another mistake is having your room designed by the wrong people. One of the worst I ever encountered is a friend who built a new house and had the builder design the home theatre. All speakers were in the ceiling, with the left, center, and right speakers all next to each other, just inches apart, directly above the screen, and rear speakers only about a foot in front of them.

It is extremely rare that a that a home builder is a home theater designer !!!!!
@@robertklacza1160 Plenty of GCs will agree to not only pre-wire for a home theater, but install speakers. The funniest was when a contractor ran one single speaker cable to 5 in-ceiling speakers, just leaving a loop hanging out of the ceiling for each speaker hole. Home owners spent a lot more money having us snake new wires through that finished ceiling.
Spending too much on video, too small a screen, and not enough power, are the 3 issues I expect to observe when entering someone's home theater. They are so common, they are the norm rather than the exception. Great video.

Just pulled the trigger on building a home today. What would you recommend for the dimensions of the room for the interior? Double drywall for sound dampening, plus sound dampening insulation? I’m good on speaker placement, screen size, audio placement, just want to make sure I frame the room correctly. I’m going to start with a 65” that I have, to save cost, but plan to later add a projector, maybe laser or something.

I have been doing a/v for 23 years. Sometimes you have to go with clients wishes as opposed to what would work best. I do always try to tell them what i think and feel is better for the area but oftentimes find it is what looks better, or what is smaller,etc.

Wow, great video for someone who is thinking about adding a media room. I do have a question. My media room room will be 16ftx16ft. The TV and seating area will be off-center by one foot. Meaning the center of the TV will be 7ft from one wall and 9ft from the another wall. Will this cause a problem for sound and/or will it look lousy
Aesthetically it may not look as perfect as it being centered. However, we've seen many rooms that are slightly off center to have room for an aisle or other reasons. For sound, you can correct for that if you have room correction in your AVR. Many brands now have all of the drivers in the ceiling speakers angled. Angled tweeters is better than nothing.
Do you have a recommendation whether to still use rear speakers when your couch is directly up against the wall? Should I not use rears then, and just use a great soundbar?
If you can you would want to position the surrounds to the sides. Separate speakers are almost always better than a soundbar unless it is a pretty high end bar. Thanks for watching

RE: Angled Speakers - seems most availbale are angles at 15 degrees - is THAT enough to compensate for ceiling ATMOS speakers that are angled ~45 degrees from Main listening position? Thanks.
That is true for some, but there are others with a much steeper angle. 15 is better than zero.
#1. Screen width x 1.2 = minimum viewing distance. Screen width x 1.6 = optimal viewing distance.
#2. Use flat or eggshell sheen with dark colors. TIP: Eggshell is best overall, because flat shows fingerprints.
#3. Minimum riser height for multi-row seating = 12"
#4. Audio/Video performance. This is mostly subjective and is why you should have a pro help design the system.
#5. You should have dedicated circuit(s) for theater equipment.
#6. DO NOT use the auto calibration with cheap receivers like Sony, Onkyo/Integra, Denon, etc. Most use Audyssey which sucks and will often make the system sound worse. Unless you have a higher end product like Anthem which has it's own room correction software, learn how to manually setup the receiver. It's really not hard.
#7. Plan for acoustic treatments. You can put a world class audio system in an untreated room and it will sound like garbage. This is probably the single biggest mistake I see with entry-level theaters. This also directly impacts how well a room correction software will work. Software cannot turn a terrible room into a good room. Get the room at least 80% of the way there by treating first reflections and let the software do the rest.

Looking for some help here.
I have a steep slope room, and planning to turn it to a home theatre. Dimensions are, 14.5 feet wide, 19.5 feet long, only 8.5 feet of ceiling is 9 feet tall and then slope down to 4 feet tall (about 11 feet long). Will this room treatable for a home theater room? If yes, which side should I use as a front, tall or low side? Thank you in advance!

I have issue with the tall ceiling side as well. Have a door on the right side and HAVC duck line run across the middle of the room, both are fixable but what if I don’t want to more those. Can I put a 2.4 screen ration at shorter side (4 feet tall ceiling) start from 6 feet tall ceiling which is about 3-4 from shorter side ceiling wall? My concern is will it mess out acoustic sound? I'm currently running a 5.1 , 1 subwoofer, 1 center speaker and 2 ceiling speakers. I want to add 2 rear speakers or 2 floor speakers on stands, redirect the two front ceiling speakers to floor speakers standing next to my tv. Do I need a 7.1 or a 9.1 receiver to make it all come together?
If you currently have 5 speakers and a sub and want to add 2 more, you only need a 7.1 receiver, but it might make sense to get one that has processing for 9.1 in case you do more down the road, thanks for watching

I have Klipsch 50W RMS speakers Right/Left and Surround, but 100W RMS speaker in the center. Is that a good setup for a home theater? I sometimes feel only center channel is working as lot of sound comes from center only. Could you please advise. TIA

the sound engineer, sitting at his mixing console, mixed the sound at 85 dB and at peaks up to 115 dB studios are usually much larger in area than a room in any house and there is such a parameter it is called reverberation time as a rule in large rooms the reverberation time is less than in small ones and in order for us to be able to enjoy the content in the form in which the sound engineer recorded it, we need to reduce this reverberation time to the level it is in the studio

Another question is Is it better to have a screen for a projector or would Theater Screen Paint (6' X 10') work as well?
I didn't even know they made Theater Screen Paint until I visited a high-end home theater store in Salt Lake about 22 years ago.
There is a reason 99% of movie theaters use Stewart screens. The picture is much better. If you compare the paint to some of the ultra cheap screens, they are about the same, but the good screens are in a totally different class.

I've been to Imax theaters and the audio has always been weak and not loud enough for me. It was especially bad while watching The new Top Gun Maverick. If you think movie theaters play volume loud, you have ears that don't usually hear loud music in the 120+DB range all the time.
We would suggest you read this article. Exposure to 120 db levels for even a short time can cause permanent hearing loss.

Bi-amp wont make any noticably difference in sound quality. However it is a smart idea to use the 4-channel amp with the pre-outs on the 3080 to drive the ceiling or surround speakers. Anything that will relieve some pressure from the main reciever is smart (otherwise current restrictions might impaire the main recievers output when listening at loud levels).

number 7 "the room" should be number 1. I think that will make more of a difference than all the other things combined.
Yes, that is very important and we tell everyone if they are building from scratch and can change the dimensions to work with us to get them right, however only about 1% of our customers have the ability to change dimensions so we left that out. We have seen some rooms that are almost a cube that are almost hopeless to get good sound in. That is why we feel acoustic treatment is super important.
Room Dimensions/ Ratio is the Tall order in any stereo listening/ home theater room. At least it can b predicted what the expectations can b .( in a typical shoe box kind rooms )

Which is best in a really nice theater room: A really nice projector or a regular TV that is 130 " like one of those state-of-the-art Samsung 4K or 8K UHD Smart babies that they showed at the Technology Fair in Vegas?
That depends on the room. You will not be able to put speakers behind an acoustic transparent screen, but it will be super bright. However, they are not cheap. We just priced one out this week a little bigger than that from Samsung for a client and it was $300K
The one thing that surprised me more than anything is how little power my theater uses. I've got 6 subs, 400ish rms watts each. 15 chanels , averages out to 200ish watts per channel and a projector. 15 amp circuit, full blast, no problem. I guess I have good power.

I did a 5.1 UA-cam test and the rear speakers you can hear out of the 2 front speakers. I've got a denon reciever. Any idea why this might be?
You should just play the test tones in your Denon receiver, see what happens, you may have a wiring issue or the YT test is faulty. Do you know of a way to fix a projector being unevenly focused?
If you mean part of the image looks out of focus and other parts do not, if the front is parallel to the screen, you could have a problem. Your projector may have some keystone adjustments in it that got out of whack, you would be best to restore all factory settings and start over.

Good advice! I definitely made the color mistake on my old theater, the red and blue I picked just didn't look the way I expected, it looked pretty nasty so I repainted in grey and dark blue. I won't make that mistake on the one I'm building now!
As for power, all amplifier stacks get their own dedicated 20 amp circuit and the front end gets its own. That's L/R subs, L/R mains, center and surround so five dedicated 20 amp circuits from a dedicated breaker box... plus the one for the front end. I figure that should do it!
I'll have to learn about video calibration but audio will be handled with multiple miniDSP modules. For my 2-ch system I use the nanoDigi with external DACs but for the theater I'll probably go with the 2x4 HD just because there's going to be a lot of them. It would require a lot of external DAC's to handle it.
You are going to have more than enough power with a 20 amp dedicated. Good luck with your theater--hope it turns out great!
@@scottnewnam6976 Maybe but I like overkill:-) Each left, right and center speaker get two Emotiva BasX A700 7-ch amplifiers to power the CBT arrays. The left right could be done with fewer amplifier channels but it's just easier to use separate channels for each shading bank.
The center speaker is partially physically straight, acoustically curved with DSP delays so it needs all fourteen channels of the two 7-ch amplifiers. Left and right also each get an Emotiva BasX A5175 5-ch amp for surrounds and Atmos.
For the woofers I'm looking at the 1000 watt ICE modules from Parts Express. There will be multiple woofer locations with independent DSP and thus amplifier channels. So, it might be a little tight for just one 20 amp circuit, if only for inrush current at power up. I suppose I could stage the 12 volt triggers to avoid this but given I was putting in all these dedicated circuits myself to a dedicated breaker box mounted on the same wall, it was just easier to give each group of amps their own breaker.
@@mfkhometheater7742 If you do more than one circuit, be sure that the circuits are on the same phase of the circuit breaker box. Otherwise, you can end up with a ground loop and have some slight buzz in the system that you don't want. In general, I think the better solution is your suggested staging of the 12v triggers and using one dedicated 20 amp circuit. By the way, you want to use this same circuit if possible for your projector as well to avoid the ground loop possibility coming through the projector to the audio as well--this is what used to also cause hum bars on tvs when connected to a different circuit than the audio system. Sounds like you love this stuff and are going to have a rocking theater. Good luck with it.
@@scottnewnam6976 Definitely, all the breakers will be on the same phase and each ground comes back to a common point. If I use just one breaker, it's all got to split out somewhere to each amplifier. A single outlet would have about a dozen multi-ch amplifiers plugged into it and the front end through a 30+ ft extension cord. Whether it's through amplifier power cord or through romex, it all just needs to tie to power and ground at the same point... star point ground. You can think of it as all the amplifier power cords all being plugged directly into the main feed in the breaker box where it has a lot more than 20 amps.
I should probably still sequence the power up, it will be an easy matter to build a circuit to sequence them with a few hundred millisecond increments and even on separate breakers it's probably a good idea.
I'm looking forward to getting the theater up and running but I suspect it will be June or July before the house is even completed. With my 100% travel job it may take a year to build out the theater after I move in. It's going to be a serious task to build the CBT arrays plus I'm planning to build the screen, the equipment rack for the front end equipment etc etc etc... I built everything in my old theater, don't want to change that now so it will take time but I think worth it in the end.
@Baz The speakers will all be DIY. Ground plane CBT line arrays for the mains and a horizontal full CBT array for the center. The center speaker will be physically curved in the middle but the ends will be physically straight and acoustically curved by DSP just so the speaker will not be too deep to put behind the screen.
Because the straight portion requires incremental delays and shading each increment requires its own DSP and amplifier channel. Also, it's just easier to use individual amplifier channels for each shading group so the current plan is to use two Emotiva BasX A700 amplifiers for each LCR speaker.

I have built several home cinemas for personal use. I have come to conclusion that the sound is almost as important as the picture to get an immersive experience. Atmos is fantastic if implemented properly. However, when prioritizing audio components - spend as much as you can on the front, center and left and subwoofers (at least two subs). You can always upgrade the remaining speakers later on. Also, go for the accoustically transparent (at) screen and place l,c,r behind the screen. Even a 77” oled is no match for a 10 year old good 1080p projector with a big screen when it comes to cinema experience. Use the oled for gaming etc.
I'm hesitant to spring for a projector because, to me, dolby vision content is so beautiful. Do you really think it's no match even though it cant display blacks as deep or colors as bright?
yeah.. best option would be OLED TV + Projector.
No way any projector can come close to the picture quality of OLED.

Good video. If I set MV as per video so for achieving 75 DB I have to move speaker DB level in minus or more than minus 10. But in AVR level can move max up to minus 10 and not beyond minus 10 as there are max level is minus 10. I m using Yamaha HTR 3072 AVR with Yamaha high end Bookshelf speakers with Yamaha SW 300 sub woofer. My Flat area is 130 sq feet so I think in my case I can not set MV 0 so I have to set MV in minus than only I can set 75 DB level for each speakers. It's a 5.1 system. Thank you. What matters is getting the levels matched. It does not matter where the individual speaker levels fall as long as when you measure them with an SPL app they are the same. If you need to move up to 80 for this to happen that is ok too.

LPCM can sound good, but the problem is the format is normally just done with two channels and not surround. It can suppport 7.1 but we have not seen many instances where it does, especially in concert videos. Thanks for watching.

These days you can buy older model, ex-demo or second hand equipment for a fraction of the cost of the newer model. The difference in quality of sound and/or performance will not be huge. If you aren't fussed about all the fancy seats, fancy lights and you have an honest sales person, you'll save a fortune. For example, I tested three of the native Sony 4k Projectors against the Epson EHTW9400 pixel shifter and the Epson was the winner for me in terms of performance. The bottom two Sony models (at over twice the price) were dark and disappointing. Increasing the brightness harshly affected contrast with the only positive being a slightly sharper picture. Dolby Atmos, more than one Sub & rear Centre speakers are unnecessary for most rooms due to the size. Anything bigger than 16ft by 16ft will be fine with a 5.1 set up. With the correct choices, you could install your own Cinema quality experience for around about $7-8K, after which, you'll never need to go to the Cinema again. IMO, compared to a decent set-up, it's overrated anyway. The picture is dark, the sound is muddy, the bass is over baring, the prices are a rip off and you mostly have to deal with 'the usual people'.
Thanks for sharing, you must be in Europe as that Epson is the same as the US 6050, which is an outstanding projector for the cost. Yes, you can save some $$ with used equipment, especially speakers, we do a brisk trade in business in our retail stores and always have some good deals floating around on speakers. We of course disagree on the need for only one sub in any room as we have heard the difference it can make, especially for more than a single seat listener. Thanks for watching!

I should have added that my opinion on the Sub would be dependent on choice of FL & FR Speaker. I've always chosen floor standing speakers with dual bass drivers on each. Along with my trusty old Velodyne CHT-12q, I've found the bass to be more than enough in my 22x22 foot room. Yeah, if you're going with smaller speakers then twin subs would be needed.
The reason you do dual subs isn't as much to blow you out of the seat, but to have better seat to seat consistency and better EQ curve out of the box. You might position that one sub perfectly so it sounds good to you, BUT your friend sitting next or behind you will have a totally different experience with nulls and weirdness. Duals help a lot to solve that.
@@justinbeamon6624 Untrue. As I said, unless you're in a huge room, multiple subs is pointless. I'm in a 36 meter square room with one 12 inch sub in the corner of the room. The sound from the sub is non directional. The low frequency (not counting my floor standing Rubicon 8's) is perfectly adequate, and the sound to the left, right, back or front of me would not be improved with an additional sub. Most people have smaller rooms, and 99.9% of the time, one decent sized sub is perfectly fine. Amps coming with additional support for 2 subs are mostly pointless, let alone sounds field for .3 or .4. It's simply a cash grab.
Expecting all disc production to be great… theres a lot of badly mixed movies out there; a very many great pictures have poor audio 😮
Yes, the content needs to be good to get the full benefit of a great home theater.
Number 8. Expecting to have a quality sound with false economy cables.
It's not just about quality conductors within a cable, which btw as well as medium to high they will also help the audio to sound better at low volumes too. But it's actually the quality of the shielding that will help the ROOM to sound better at no volumes (noise floor)
The more cables I shield the quieter my room becomes! In fact the last group of cables I shielded just happened to be my HDMI's and low & behold the room became quieter yet again. 🥳

@@Totalplonker Gotcha, there is an iPhone app called Decibel X that is pretty accurate, it will not pick up any subsonic bass from nearby traffic, but its pretty effective at finding the noise floor.

I would say buy trailing edge equipment, you dont need the latest and greatest tuner, a model 3-5 years old can be purchased for 30-50 percent of what a new one costs, leaving you more money for upgrades elsewhere.

When i turn off the lights my busy room disappears except for the screen that's because 90% of everything in there is black including my walls. Only thing you can see is my screen which looks like its floating in the air. Another pain in the ass is trying to de couple and isolate everything. lol

on number 5 "may need a dedicated circuit" umm no how about absolutely need multiple dedidicated circuits. 1 circuit for subs. 1 circuits for lights. 1 circuit for remaining outlets. 1 circuit and if you are really cool a 240V circuit to really keep your amplifiers drawing low current from a 240v outlet
"cables aren't good"? The cables don't matter. Get cables that work and save money for better speakers and subwoofers.
Cables do matter, as a retired audio engineer I’ve achieved better clarity in both sound and picture by swapping out cheap cables for a higher quality brand.
While I agree with your sentiment, there are exceptions. In a home theater, there is typically one long HDMI run to the projector, and cable quality matters tremendously when HDMI cables exceed 10ft/ 3M. Its not magic, just basic issues of capacitance and resistance. I've also seen numerous contractors install 18 awg spkr wire in the walls.
Cables matter to a point. There no reason to spend $200 on a 6ft HDMI cable, but going to the dollar store is equally as stupid. Put aside a reasonable amount of money for cabling. Thick speaker wire, high quality HDMI and sub cables ARE important.

Guys they were talking about speaker wire. Obviously you need a reliable HDMI cable that won't drop your signal. Beyond that, it's not worth agonizing over miniscule speaker cable differences when the changes you can get from speakers and EQ are many orders of magnitude greater and easier to control.

I thought I always wanted a home theater room. I watched a video where this guy built a great dedicated room and one of his comments was that he was the only one that used it! Unless your wife really wants it, you will be the only one using it. You are better off having a nice system without all of the speakers that you can share in an environment that others will use on a regular basis.
It really depend, most people tell us it becomes their favorite room in the home and they use it all together every night. But there does need to be a family interest in movies, TV series, and concerts. We have also found if the room feels like a cave (all black everywhere) it is more likely to be a one person room, adding a tiny bit of interest to the space makes a big difference in how it feels. You don't really need much. Get some cheap surround speakers on stands for the 5 channels and a small sub. Get a basic 5 channel receiver. Best to get a home theater in a box to start with. They are good enough.

I’ve found when I want the best audio mixes is to go back to my laserdisc collection for movies in 5.1 ac-3 or dts not compressed and now a days with those stupid nearfeild mixes are bloody awful and should be thrown away

So.. This video will do me to put down what I need to say. This was on my mind about 6 months ago and I simply forgot to write it down at the time. Also.. I need a break.. A distraction away from the trial and inbetween editing my videos. I've just been sitting here writing most of this in my head. This is going to be a big huge one. I'm listening to Whitesnake.. 1977 album as I write this.. Actually about 3 am this morning.. I decided to listen to this album.. As it was on recommended on UA-cam. I had been listening to Dio Master of the moon and Lock up the wolves. Actually.. I am listening to Whitesnake 1977 album now .. 20 minutes ago.. And all of a sudden my thought got triggered.. As I suddenly thought of listening to this album on open speaker in a 70's lounge room. So.. I have chosen this video to start with. Back in 1997.. When I worked at Sega world Sydney.. Which I have made a video on.. I do visit it on and off to make edits on it.. I Digress. At the time of working for Sega world Sydney back in 1997.. The Good Ol days.. Remember the Good Ol days when the world was a different place.. Ohhhh I do remember. Back then.. Music wise.. Well to play music.. When I was in my old room at my parents place.. I had my ghetto blaster from the 90's.. I eventually bought.. To go with it a compact disc player.. Which cost me about $70 at the time.. Which I would have thought was expensive. Also.. I remember at one point buying some headphones.. Similar to apple ear buds which weren't heard of back then. This is how I would listen to music. By the mid to late 90's I didn't really listen to anything on open speaker.. I remember listening to my Led Zeppelin cd's with headphones in. Now.. At some point in 1997.. I decided for some reason to.. I contemplated getting some speakers.. I don't know why. I went to Big W.. The equivalent of Walmart.. Pretty much.. And I would have seen what they had to offer but probably dismissed it. I have a friend.. Who I haven't spoken to in years.. But at the time in the late 90's I spoke with him every second day. A buisness man... Very successful. Knew a lot about music and speakers. We loved Heavy Metal.. Which is my main love. I am very eclectic though. My friend worked for a company at the time. What happened was I mentioned to him that I was Possibly interested in getting some better speakers.. I was contemplating it. This was a mistake to mention to him.. Which I half realized at the time. All I wanted was the option of some new speakers.. But he went into full sales man aggressive mode and said.. Ohhh Nahhh.. Dude..You need the whole thing. He ended up getting me to go out to go out to a shop complex where his friend worked who dealt in speaker home theater setup systems.. Way more than I was even interested in at the time.
So.. I went out there.. I'm listening to the Whitesnake album as I typ this.. Stimulating actually. I went out to this warehouse shop. Met my friends work friend. Semi aggressive business sales guy. When I turned up.. He thought I was ready to purchase on the spot.. My friend must have said I was ready to buy.. I Was not. Anyway.. I was shown the JBL set up they had.. And I wasn't buying into it.. Wasn't going for this guys sales pitch.. Not initially anyway. I said.. I just want a couple of speakers.. Maybe. In retrospect.. The whole thing was madness.. But we have to remember that the late 90's.. I was in my mid 20's.. And it was an open speaker era.. Not that many people used headphones like they do today. Anyway.. This sales guy said.. Do you want good sound.. Quality sound. That's right.. My friend had two JBL speakers at the time.. And I thought I possibly wanted something similar. Anyway.. This sales guy says.. Look at this system.. It's home theater.. It's 5.1.. It's loud.. You'll love it. I'm like.. It's just for my bedroom.. I don't need all this. Somehow.. Over the course of 40 minutes this sales guy managed to talk me into buying a JBL.. 5.1 Home theater system.. Which I completely didn't need. It wouldn't be until 15 years later that I would look back on it and realize.. I never needed it. Anyway.. I got suckered into a deal.. For $899.. Interest free.. And I got to pay it off.. Big Mistake. I remember the words of the salesman at the end of the transaction.. He said.. Have a Loud Christmas.. I was like.. Yeah.. Ok.. I was half hearted about it. My friend.. Was over the moon about it.. And my other friend was like.. Ohhh new system huh.. My ghetto blaster gets me by just fine. I took it home.. And at first did not open it.. I was completely reluctant to open the box. In fact I think my friend called and said.. How does it sound dude.. I'm like.. I haven't open the box.. He was like.. Huh? What? He is the type of person to rip all the plastic off frustratedly as quickly as he can like 5 minutes after purchase.. Where as I will look at the product I have purchased and will eventually reluctantly disturb the lovely packaging. I've got cd's I purchased mid 90's.. Still in their plastic. It's part of my ocd. Anyway.. About 2 days later.. I decided to in the afternoon.. Reluctantly open the box. As I was going to return the whole lot.. But my friend said.. Please don't do that.. My friend will lose the commission.. I was like.. Ohhhhhhh Ok. He also said.. Don't you want a state of the art system. So.. I unboxed it.
It involved/contained.. A JBL amplifier.. A subwoofer and 5 speakers and a remote. I set it up reluctantly.. In my average size bedroom.. And I'm thinking.. This system is too big for my bedroom. I got it setup.. And put a cd in.. The sound was terrific I will admit.. Beautiful sound.. But too much for anything I needed.. Yet a great sound.. But too much for the house. Never needed to put it above volume 3. I did end up keeping it and got used to it. Much of the time having it on volume 2. Down the track on the last day the money was due.. Which I went through a lot of stress with.. Because at the last 3 month mark before the final payment was due.. Which was about a year later.. The company started to send me harassment letters.. You owe us money.. Pay now. I ended up sending them a check which cost me $7.. To shut them up and get them off my back. So.. I have recieved return error.. My post is continued as a reply..
Cont'd.. For years I blasted my music at home through the JBL's.. my parents never complained too much.. I broke 2 of the tweekers on two of the speakers. The system was very good.. Very loud.. Too loud for a bedroom.. Ridiculous for a bedroom actually.. Even too loud for a lounge room in all honesty. When I moved out of home in 2010.. I left the JBL's there.. By that point 2 of the speakers worked. Two years ago I reflected back on it.. Actually it was about 2014 and I reflected back on that purchase.. A total waste.. A complete waste of money. I should have been much stronger at the time and just put my foot down assertively and said.. I don't need all this.. I'm just looking for a simple sound.. All this is Too much and my ghetto blaster is just fine.. Which I still have under my old bed at my parents house. In fact in retrospect and looking back to 1997.. All I needed was a good pair of headphones.. In fact back then I wish I knew about Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro.. Which is what I'm wearing at the moment listening to Whitesnake. A beautiful headphone which I have been using since 2019. I have my Audio Technica M50x for the bedroom... And to sleep I have my apple ear buds. Ohhhh and when I would visit other people's homes.. Houses.. Units.. They would have a very basic ghetto blaster.. Or very basic stereo system setup.. And I would never say.. Ohhhhh I have JBL.. I'd just keep quiet. JBL Home theater system.. I don't think they are meant for a regular house.. Certainly not.. As the neighbours would probably hear it. They are probably better for nightclub situations. I have regret that I bought that system in 1997.. My friend was so proud of it.. And I would say.. Your not the one who has to live with it.. Then he would become confused.. And say.. Are you ungrateful.. And I would say.. But I don't need all this.. It's over the top. Ohh.. In 2018.. My partner and myself we picked up a Yamaha 5.1 small speaker sound system from the Salvation army in Goulburn.. $100.. Got it home. Once again.. I was reluctant to buy it.. Then my partner said.. If you don't buy it.. I will. Got it home.. Got it setup.. Beautiful sound.. Don't use it often though as we live in a unit.. As we are considerate of our neighbours.. Even though our neighbours blast their their tv as loud as they want whenever they feel like it.. The Irony.. Though it's been better the last 6 months.. Fortunately we have good thick walls here. That's a different subject though.. And my Beyerdynamic's cut out about half of the background noise.
Previous to this.. A week before the Yamaha system.. We purchased a Samsung sound bar to go with our new tv.. Got the sound bar home.. Reluctant to take it out of it's box.. But after two days.. Conceded.. Set it up.. Underwhelmed in every way possible.. Don't buy sound bars.. They are awful.. Total waste of time and money. Then bought the Yamaha from Salvation army.. When I got the Yamaha setup it sounded phenomenally better than the sound bar. Then we took the sound bar back to Harvey Norman.. Told/explained to the guy there what happened.. What we thought.. But you'd never need one for your lounge room or your bedroom.. A basic ghetto blaster with headphones is sufficient.. I don't even use that anymore as I have a Fiio Dac plugged into my usb on windows ten and my Beryerdynamic DT 770 Pro plugged into that.. Simple.. And for the bedroom I have my Ipod.. Plug my Audio Technica's into that. I do regret buying the JBL system back then.. It was excessive and over the top.

The host of a channel doesn't like what I have to say and deletes my comment.. Which is enormously frustrating.. Considering it took 45 minutes to typ this. Also.. As soon as I post I will take a photo of it. JBL Home theater systems are very un necessary for a home. I have proof read this twice and am satisfied.

@@AudioAdvice Yeah.. That was a lot.. Needed to vent it.. Thanks for reading. I want to clarify.. That even though the JBL's were Over excessive for me.. I think that they may suit some people.. Depending. They Just didn't suit me at that time. In regard of the Yamaha 5.1 system.. It's a great amplifier.. HTR 5950 and the speakers are small and heavy and I have it setup with our Samsung tv.. Works great.. Terrific sound. When I watch a movie in the evening sometimes.. I plug my Beyerdynamic headphones into the amp.. Wonderful.

if you buy the right gauge copper cable it doesnt matter what they cost might as well be cheap
you save some money and invest in something more important than fancy looking expensive cables
that do jack for your audio and just make the people selling them rich
I'm about to buy a €600 projector and point it at my light grey wallpaper, hook it up to a €70 2.1 pc speaker system and have that playing in a room with empty walls. I feel like a villian watching these type of videos, but in reality I have low standards and I just want a bigger screen.
It is all relative, what you are putting together is a million times better than a 42" TV with its internal speakers! Thanks for watching
