Great info! Really excited as I’m heading to Egypt for the first time in December! This is perfect timing! I see there are 12 main galleries opened now, is this the main museum then? The other future openings, will those be smaller in size? Thanks Gus your videos have helped so much!
The Tut galleries will be massive, and the solar boat museum will also be big, so I’d guess at this point, we have about 60% of the museum 👍🏼. And who knows-maybe the other places will be open by December? We really have no idea, unfortunately 🤓

Great work Gus. I am arriving in Egypt on October 16th (been planned for 3 months). How long will it take to view all that is open as of October 17? I assume that it will take more than 1 day. Will a single ticket purchase get you access to multiple days?
I’m guessing you’ll be able to see all that is on display at the moment in a 2 hour visit, and then you’ll want another hour to see the other areas the museum, have a lunch/coffee break, etc. About 60% of the museum is open at this point. The walkthrough I did shows everything that is on display, and I did the walkthrough in about 20 mins. Maximum for someone who wants to read every label, I’d say you’d want to plan a day. But personally, I’d do a half day and then see either Giza or Saqqara as well. Hope that helps!
Many thanks for this review, by far the best I've seen. Would it be possible to show or describe an object label ? I'd like to know if they give inventory numbers and if yes, in which format (a new like GEM333) or an old like JE333 or CG333 (Egyptian Museum Tahrir).

I would not know what you were talking about with just the name of food mentioned. Lastly, thank you for giving us this overview of the GEM! I think it has more to do with getting scammed, not metered, or other known issues with non-app drivers. On my next trip in December, I have 2 options: to visit the Grand Egyptian Museum or to visit Saqqara and Memphis. Which one would you choose from those two visits, the museum or Saqqara + Memphis?
It depends! If you’re more interested in visiting ancient monumental sites, than I think Saqqara and Memphis (or Saqqara and Dahshur) are better, but if you like visiting artifacts laid out and explained in a museum, then the GEM. Hope this helps!
Hello, really great video-thanks a lot for posting it! I just have a couple of questions, if you don't mind (I’m trying to work out whether an early trip from Geneva to visit is worth it, or if I should wait for the full opening). From what I saw in the video, I got the impression there were fewer artifacts on display (or maybe they're just more spread out?) compared to the old museum. What was your impression? Also, in the old museum, there was a room full of sarcophagi, as well as a mummy hall. Did you see anything like that when you were walking around, but just didn't include it in the video? Thanks again!
Great questions! At this point, I feel like there is a similar amount of objects displayed, just way more room to see them and more spread out. This museum doesn’t have any human remains on display-for that, you’ll want to go to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, where there are 22 royal mummies on display (moved from the old Egyptian Museum). There are several sarcophagi on the Grand Staircase and spread throughout the 12 main galleries-everything isn’t in one small room together like at the old museum. I think making a special, separate trip to see the GEM will be more worth it when it’s fully open. However, if you’re already planning on coming to Egypt, seeing the GEM is a good option while you’re already here, but I wouldn’t make a special trip just for the GEM until we see its full opening.
Great job! Loved watching your video! Have been to Egypt several times and am waiting to visit again when the GEM is done. After the King Tut and boat galleries open will there be more galleries opening in the future or will it be completed? Thanks.
Thank you! It's my understanding that the Tut Galleries and the Solar Boat are all that's left to open, but I'll update my viewers if we learn of any other galleries/spaces that will be opening as well.

Hey gus.. I'm visiting Egypt in 3 wks time... Can you provide an update as to what's still left in the old cairo museum and if i can only visit one, which one should i visit.. gem or the old museum
An excellent introduction. I’m too infirm to go now but am delighted that something we discussed back in the 80s has at last materialised. You didn’t explain the entry prices. I have always preferred to spend about 45minutes in any museum before suffering from cultural indigestion. It looks as if one can go out in the fresh air but can one get in again without paying a second or third entry? Sitting in eating places does not appeal, and I doubt if I am unique! I hope there’s a suitable place for Nefertiti when she returns to Egypt.
Entry prices are on their website that I talk about in the section where I show how to buy tickets 👍🏼. You can go outside and re enter as many times as you wish, at this point, as long as you don’t exit the museum campus. There are several outdoor areas you can go to that are still inside the GEM complex.
@@EgyptAdventuresTravel thanks Gus we love watching your videos and we were so excited here in Australia to see your new video today. Our family of 5 will be there in 1 month! We can’t wait
Yes, that’s my understanding, but I haven’t tried this yet. I never saw any process where they checked the entry time for a ticket, just when it’s time for the guided tour to start.
Hi Gus, it seems, in GEM, only mobile photography is permitted. On the same note, can you tell me in which all Egyptian attractions is it prohibited to use my camera? And where all do I need to pay extra? Thanks!
Hi there! Unfortunately I don’t know the answer to this-can anyone else help? My recommendation is to bring the camera along and then if you’re asked not to use it, put it away and use your phone, or if there’s an extra fee you can pay it on the spot if you think it’s worth it. Sorry I can’t be more help!
Gus, based on the galleries that are now open, plus the ones that will be open in the future, how many hours does one need to see the whole museum on their own? Would it be closer to a half-day or a full day? I literally was supposed to arrive in Cairo from Los Angeles yesterday but I had to cancel my entire Egypt trip due to a shoulder injury. I am going to reschedule a year from now when the entire museum will be open.
For that question, let’s wait until the other galleries are fully open, because we don’t know how extensive they’ll be yet - hopefully we’ll know soon!
It depends-if the Tut mask is still at the old Egyptian Museum, I recommend going to that one. If the Tut mask is at the GEM, I’d recommend seeing the GEM. Hope this helps!
I didn’t see anyone there with a camera (just smartphones), but I’m guessing if you’re using it for tourism purposes only (not shooting photos or videos to make money), it should be fine. Does anyone have a definitive answer on this?
Yes bec each will have a focus. The GEM is around King Tut and his family. NMEC about the different civiliations in Egypt from ancient Egy onwords and has mummies of our worrier hero kings and queens who liberated part of Egy invaded by Hiksos. It has also an amazing fabrics museum
I’d recommend if they only have time to visit one museum, to visit the original Egyptian Museum to see the Tut mask. That’s the most important artifact to ancient Egypt, and it’s currently at the old museum (but will move to the GEM soon). My next recommendation would be the NMEC if they want to see mummies or the GEM if they’re more interested in beautiful statuary.
@@EgyptAdventuresTravel Thanks! Only have a day so I was wondering. Might be a good idea to go to the old Egyptian Museum. I went to GEM before and it was quite bare. Glad to know it's opening fully!
@@hraslan I've been to the museums a couple of times. GEM was quite empty the last time I went. I guess the OG Egyptian Museum would still be a good start for new visitors!
At the time I’m writing this comment, yes, it’s still at the Old Museum. We unfortunately don’t know when it will be moved, but I’ll be sure to post a video when I have any updates 🙂
We will visit from the US in March 2025. Viking Nile cruise. I we can arrive in Cairo earlier to see the GEM. If I read every description available, can you complete that in 5-6 hours? Also curious if currently reside in Egypt, and do you speak the language? Arabic?
If you read every single display, you’ll probably want a full day at the GEM. I split time between Egypt and the U.S., and yes I speak Egyptian Arabic fluently 🤓
Yes. The 12 galleries were opened for the first time on Oct 16. If you were there two weeks ago, they wouldn’t have been opened yet. Sorry you missed them on that visit!
The most mummified remains are actually at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) - where there are 22 royal mummies. So far at the GEM, I didn't notice any mummified remains on display.
Thank you. We live in Giza, so would want to go without being on a tour. Would I be able to just go there with my husband and rent a wheelchair without being with a tour? I have shared your video with others in U.S. (my original home). Thank you for this beautiful and very informative video!
Are there any mummified remains of people on display - any of the kings or queens? (I teach Museum Studies and couldn't quite tell from your video if there are any - y students would love to know :)
Not that I remember seeing, no! Mummified remains are in the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, where 22 royal mummies are displayed. No photos and videos are allowed in those galleries. There are also a few mummified remains on display at the Egyptian Museum (old museum) in Tahrir Sqaure. Hope this helps!
At this point, it's not a good idea to walk - it's a snarl of streets and highways, and would take a long time because there's no "straight shot" to walk. Eventually they'll be building a bridge to connect Giza to the GEM and will have bus services shuttling guests back and forth. For now, use a private driver for the day to get you around the Giza Plateau and the GEM.
In the 12 galleries there was AC, and inside the restaurants. As far as I could tell, the Great Hall (the big atrium) doesn’t have AC, but it was still cool. The original Egyptian Museum has no AC at all.
All the love to Egypt for the largest museum in the world 🇪🇬

You can go outside and re enter as many times as you wish, at this point, as long as you don’t exit the museum campus. There are several outdoor areas you can go to that are still inside the GEM complex.
Thanks Gus! Once you buy your tickets can you leave to go to zoomba, Starbucks etc, and then enter the gallerys again?
Exactly! It’s nice to take a break and then head back in for more ancient history 👍🏼
@@EgyptAdventuresTravel thanks Gus we love watching your videos and we were so excited here in Australia to see your new video today. Our family of 5 will be there in 1 month! We can’t wait
Have a great trip!
Great work Gus.
My pleasure!
I hope when it fully finished it will have more audio visual/inteeactive multimedia
I’ll provide any updates as I have them 👍🏼
Thanks Gus, fantastic updates✌
Thanks for watching! Feel free to share with anyone else who might be interested.
Great video. Where will the King Tut and boat galleries be located in the GEM?
I'm not sure, but I know King Tut's galleries will be onsite, and the boat museum will be just outside the Great Hall (not opened yet).
Do you know if you book a guided tour on the website if you can enter the museum with the ticket anytime before the tour starts?
Yes, that’s my understanding, but I haven’t tried this yet. I never saw any process where they checked the entry time for a ticket, just when it’s time for the guided tour to start.
Thank you for the great tour
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Feel free to share with anyone who wants to see what the GEM’s new galleries are like 🙂
Hi Gus, it seems, in GEM, only mobile photography is permitted.
Great review tbh great job
Thank you! Feel free to share with anyone who might be interested!
Hey there! We're visiting Egypt next month, November 27th, if we can visit just one museum, should we go to the old museum or the gem
It depends-if the Tut mask is still at the old Egyptian Museum, I recommend going to that one.
If the Tut mask is at the GEM, I’d recommend seeing the GEM.
Hope this helps!
Hello, can I use a camera at GEM or just a cell phone?
I didn’t see anyone there with a camera (just smartphones), but I’m guessing if you’re using it for tourism purposes only (not shooting photos or videos to make money), it should be fine.
Does anyone have a definitive answer on this?
Is it possible to make a video review of bashtyl train station (upper Egypt train station)?
It’s on my list-not sure when I’ll be able to make it, but hopefully in the next two months! 👍🏼💪🏼
Is this an accessible venue?..are there wheel chairs or ev wheel chairs available for visitors to the museum?
It is accessible and the museum says they offer manual wheelchairs, although I haven’t tried this yet.
Would it still be worth my time to visit the old Egyptian Museum and NMEC? I've been there but taking some new colleagues to them next month.
I agree that the old museum at this point in time would be the best option, because of the Tut mask 😎
11:35 that's Yousef Awyan an Egyptian gem
I saw a few notable folks there on the first day!
Magnificent museum ❤️🇪🇬❤️ and the video is really awesome ❤️💯 , thank you so much for sharing this amazing video 👍🏻🌹🌹
Thanks for watching! 🙏
Is it only Visa & Mastercard for tickets, or can you use debit cards ?
Any visa or Mastercard, whether a debit card, or a credit card, will work.
Great Video. Thank you
You're welcome!
is the mask of Tutankhamon still available in the old museun in Cairo?
At the time I’m writing this comment, yes, it’s still at the Old Museum. We unfortunately don’t know when it will be moved, but I’ll be sure to post a video when I have any updates 🙂
Is there a guidebook to the Grand Egyptian Museum that explains the galleries?
No guidebook at this point, but everything is well labeled and each gallery has a large column explaining the theme and contents.
Thank you for your video 👏👏😊
You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Nice video ❤
Glad you liked it!
I was there 2 weeks ago, are you saying the open 12 galaxies since then??
Yes. The 12 galleries were opened for the first time on Oct 16. If you were there two weeks ago, they wouldn’t have been opened yet. Sorry you missed them on that visit!
thank you i am an egyptian girl studying tour giuding and i loved this video very much❤
I'm glad you liked it! ❤️
Looks fantastic! I bet they have mummies there. Tell me, do they have lots of mummies???
The most mummified remains are actually at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) - where there are 22 royal mummies. So far at the GEM, I didn't notice any mummified remains on display.
@@EgyptAdventuresTravel thank you.
Man! Thanks a lot for the great efforts you've done so far to showcase our great gem.
You are most welcome! It was a pleasure to share these great new galleries.
Thanks so much for this hot off the press video. It looks amazing. Now I don't need to visit Egypt. You're the best!
My pleasure ❤️
Will it eventually be possible to rent a wheelchair at the GEM? My husband walks with a cane but could not walk through all the large museum.
Yes-I’ve been arranging this for my guests 👍🏼
Thank you. We live in Giza, so would want to go without being on a tour. Would I be able to just go there with my husband and rent a wheelchair without being with a tour? I have shared your video with others in U.S. (my original home). Thank you for this beautiful and very informative video!
@@brendacruise4679 my pleasure! For that, I’m not sure, but you can contact the GEM to ask them-they’ve been responsive 👍🏼
Yay! Excellent work. 👏
Thank you!
Planning to visit with my son in 2025 🤩
Have a great visit!
@@EgyptAdventuresTravel Many thanks!
I've heard the GEM is in two km away from Giza pyeamids. Is it safe to walk from pyramids to there?
At this point, it's not a good idea to walk - it's a snarl of streets and highways, and would take a long time because there's no "straight shot" to walk.
Eventually they'll be building a bridge to connect Giza to the GEM and will have bus services shuttling guests back and forth.
For now, use a private driver for the day to get you around the Giza Plateau and the GEM.
@@EgyptAdventuresTravel Thank you for the prompt response
@@saruultumen749 my pleasure!
❤ Gus.
❤️❤️❤️
I was waiting for your video about the museum 😂
And here it is 😂
How long it will take for a viewer who is a bit more into details? Do I need to keep the whole day for this?
I think a half day is fine at this point, combined with either Giza or Saqqara.
You move the camera in such a way that the frames blur, so we miss a lot of detail.
Thanks for that feedback! I'll try to improve this for my next video on the GEM :)
Thanks Gus! Some great motivation to keep saving for my trip.
I’m glad you’re inspired!
Does it have AC?
In the 12 galleries there was AC, and inside the restaurants. As far as I could tell, the Great Hall (the big atrium) doesn’t have AC, but it was still cool.
The original Egyptian Museum has no AC at all.
❤❤
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing! It looks amazing and I can't wait to visit it!
