If you for some reason buy this, even used, its worth taking a look at other overclocking tools then amd's own drivers & msi afterburner, like say ati tray tools & for nvidia cards give it a try with nvidia inspector, i maxed out the sliders on a nvidia 8500 gt in msi afterburner at like 640 mhz core & 400 mhz memory, while nvidia inspector gave me more headroom too 730 mhz & 430 mhz memory clock before it started too show graphical glitches, once i tested it in a new testrig with a better powersupply i got 760 mhz core & 450 mhz memory stable.
This was a ddr2 version btw.
Points wise in 3dmark 2001se it went from 17k too 22k which is a decent jump.

i remember having r7 240 still in 2018 before upgrading to a gtx 1060 6gb later that year, I dont remember if I had the 2gb ddr3 or the 1gb gddr5 version, but back then i ran fortnite in season 4 and up to like season 6 or 7 and i got avg 60 fps on 720p competetive settings, it just shows how fortnite got alot more demanding since then

  • @themetalprincess

what people dont seem to get is that the Radeon R7 240 is a "Lightweight" gaming card. It was NOT created to match a GTX's performance. It was created as a cheap, lightweight alternative to play very light gaming on games from 2012-2017 or so. Trying to play graphically intensive games like RDD 2 on this card is just a setup to make it look bad. Whereas if you want to do the opposite You could play the worlds most popular PC game GTA 5 at around 40 FPS, which is better than or equal to a playstation expierence all on a card you can buy for $25-30 or so on ebay. I like Timmy Joe and his videos, but why sh*t on an old budget card that is 7+ years old and cost under $100 when it was new, because it cant play a game that came out yesterday? It doesnt make any sense. The selling points for this card is it will go into any PC reguardless of the power supply and also it is Direct x12 and has decent driver support. If you have a small low profile PC and cant put in a powerful graphics card because of your budget etc this card is a good choice to allow for some light gaming. It will play GTA V and Fortnite pretty well and these are the 2 most popular games overall right now. I have the Asus 2GB version of this card in my old Dell Optiplex and I only play 3 games (GTA V, NFS 2015, and Fortnite) and it plays all 3 pretty well and I paid like $25 for the card!

ofc this real comment has only five likes and probably down voted by fanboys because they can't take valid criticism. and to add on that, why every condescending tech vlogger use cs go as game reference for low end cheap gpu? heck it can run smoothly on low settings on my old laptop using intel hd 4000 integrated graphics.

  • @TheIssiz1
    @TheIssiz1 3 роки тому +3

I believe something is wrong with that r7 240 i ve been using r7 240 2gb msi model for 3-4 and i honestly never got that low fps on anything i played crisis 3 with playable fps and i am playing cs go everyday with over 60 fps on high settings with 720p(i have a 720p monitor) but maybe my cpu might be carrying it (xeon e5450 the lga775 beast). But nice video over all thanks for giving attention to this card in 2020 i really love it and played most of the games on it. Many people still use this card in 2020 and its nice seeing someone actually take a look at it again.

I have an XFX version of this card in my old AMD Athlon II X4 295 @ 2.9Ghz with 8GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM, 120GB SSD, 1TB HDD rig at work I use on a daily basis(I work for a nonprofit where sometimes you have to make it happen yourself if you want it done) running Manjaro Linux W/MATE DE, and with a basic 24in 1080p 60hz monitor it handles UA-cam, Hulu, office work with Libreoffice/Google Docs just fine, and even some light gaming when I have downtime in games like Horizon Chase Turbo, Streets of Rage 4, Pac Man 256, etc... So I think it's still a good card if you still have a computer of that vintage kicking around that can't take anything faster, you can find it at a good price, you run a lightweight Linux distro like Manjaro MATE so it's not so resource heavy like Windows 10, and keep your expectations in check. lastly a bonus to running this card on Linux is with the latest Linux kernel updates, the AMD coded open source drivers are better than in Windows if you don't care about using 3rd party tools to overclock the card, and let it run stock, and with a temp gun even after gaming, or a long session of Hulu, I've never seen my card hit over 105F/40C.

on MSI afterburner you should be able to extend the OC limits on these cards I think, in some of the settings menu, if the voltage is not too low it should do 1GHz+, but sadly your card is the DDR3 64bits, if it was 128bits it would be a beast (HA not really, but clearly better than this), still fun stuff, I think low end hardware is what many people are using and also watching youtube videos about, no surprise.

I use a gt710 in my server. It's only job is displaying the bios and unraid gui, it has no fan and uses almost no power, I only have it there so the other cards can be allocated tasks more easily (for vm passthrough and plex)
I do allow the gt710 to decode video for Emby (a plex alternative) and it works but it almost never gets asked to do that.
Unfortunately unraid doesn't go well with AMD gpu's (unless they are just for vm passthrough) or i might pick this for future builds.

i got an R7250 2gb by powercolor from 2014 and just been replaced for and rx 580 4 months ago. it is decent and a good upgrade to the integrated gpu of kaveri series A10-7700k which does have a r7-240 igpu cut down.this processor is still running and i think its time to replace this with 5600x if i get the availability.

I have a R7 290X that I use as a place holder GPU, but this is fun to watch old GPUs. let me know if you want to do any testing on it :)

lol I had one of these in a old Lenovo prebuilt a few years ago which I swapped out for a 1050ti, at the time the difference was so vast I felt like I'd upgraded to a 1080ti.

Its interesting because my first pc had a gt740 and a fx 8800p. I had +400mhz on core and im suprised the card didnt just die.

I'm not sure if I'm surprised that it's worse than my fx4100+r9 270x. I did turn off tessellation in the control panel, so I can run some newer games at 15~30 fps. Heck, I've been playing horizon zero dawn and it's not that bad.

The older AMD/NVIDIA Low End GPUS I use in Windows XP 32 Bit Gaming setups. I play stuff from Late DOS - Win XP games and they run them smoothly (depending on the card.) The AMD ones seem to have better compatibility and overall performance for me. Otherwise yes you are right these cards are not for gaming but for other uses and should not be held to the gaming card standards.

🙂 checkout the HD 7570 dell oem 1gb ddr5, they come in short or long bracket, u can play older gog games just fine with them, i use them to gift old dell & hp sff computers, throw on Windows 7 and ur golden, linux distros shud work too, the 7570 is very affordable, theres other variants under the Firewire name, they work similar, try to get the ddr5 versions because it will affect the FPS speed, theres also the gt730 ddr5 similar but it costs a bit more usually

I have a r7 240 paired with a i5 6500 and they get like 75-90 fps in fortnite BR and in creative fortnite like 100-120

I have a weird R7 250 4GB model that doesn’t even show in tech power up. It’s about the same performance as this. 40~50 FPS on 720p.
